I would like the left and right arrow keys to rotate my canvas shape clockwise and anticlockwise, respectively. Currently the shape moves only linearly.
In the long run, I am trying to replicate the movement of my ROS (Robot Operating System) TurtleSim using this javascript code, and the left & right keys rotate the turtlesim in this way. (I am fairly new to javascript.)
<script>
function Parent(){
//diffColor = false;
mainCanvas.load();
tracker = new track(30, 50, "white", 30, 120); //create object that will move with keys;
click();
//touch();
//animate();
//mapCanvas.load();
}
function click(){
window.addEventListener("click", getClickPosition, false);
function getClickPosition(e){
tracker.distanceX = e.clientX - (tracker.width / 2); //move tracker to near center of tracker; clientX gets horizontal coordinate of cursor
tracker.distanceY = e.clientY - (tracker.height / 2);
}
}
var mainCanvas = {
canvas : document.createElement("canvas"),
load: function(){
this.canvas.width = (window.innerWidth)/2;
this.canvas.height = window.innerHeight;
this.ctx1 = this.canvas.getContext("2d");
document.body.insertBefore(this.canvas, document.body.childNodes[0]);
this.interval = setInterval(moveTracker, 20);
window.addEventListener ("keydown", function(e){
console.log(e.keyCode);
mainCanvas.key = e.keyCode; //execute movement when key pressed
});
window.addEventListener ("keyup", function(e){
mainCanvas.key = false; //stop movement once key is released
});
},

this.ctx1.clearRect(0, 0, this.canvas.width, this.canvas.height);

ctx.rotate(45*Math.PI/180);

this.newPosition = function(){

this.distanceX += this.speed * Math.cos(this.rotation);
this.distanceY += this.speed * Math.sin(this.rotation);
}

tracker.speedX = 0;
tracker.speedY = 0;
tracker.rotationSpeedRight = 0;

if (mainCanvas.key && mainCanvas.key == 37) //left key; should move anticlockwise
tracker.rotationSpeedLeft = -1;
if (mainCanvas.key && mainCanvas.key == 38) //down key
tracker.speedY = -1;
if (mainCanvas.key && mainCanvas.key == 39) //right key; should move clockwise;
tracker.rotationSpeedRight = 1;
if (mainCanvas.key && mainCanvas.key == 40) //up key
tracker.speedY=1;
tracker.newPosition();
tracker.update();
}
There is no such thing as a "left rotation" and a "right rotation", they both refer to the same thing. You only need one rotation value, it is the current angle of your drawing.
I also assume you want your up key to go in whichever direction you are facing rather than always up, so you can switch the speed values to only one value as well, the speed in the current direction. This basically changes your coordinate system from cartesian (x, y) to polar (angle and distance).
To know the final change on the X-Y plane of a move based on rotation and speed, you have to use speed * cos(angle) for X and speed * sin(angle) for Y (based on trigonometry).
rotate needs to be called before you draw your rectangle (it's basically saying "everything that I will do next will need to be rotated by that amount") and save and restore need to be called around all that, to cancel the rotation once you are done drawing your rotated shape.
Another note: rotate rotates the canvas around the origin (0, 0). To rotate around the center of your element, which is probably what you want to do, you will need to first translate to the position, then not forget to offset the position at which you draw the rectangle to take into account that initial translation.
A potential update of the bottom part of your code would be:
function track(width, height, color, distanceX, distanceY, rotation){
this.width = width;
this.height = height;
this.distanceX = distanceX || 0;
this.distanceY = distanceY || 0;
this.speed = 0;
this.rotation = rotation || 0;
this.rotationSpeed = 0;
this.update = function(){
ctx = mainCanvas.ctx1;
ctx.fillStyle = color;
ctx.save();
ctx.translate(this.distanceX, this.distanceY);
ctx.rotate(this.rotation);
ctx.fillRect(-this.width / 2, -this.height / 2, this.width, this.height);
ctx.restore();
}
this.newPosition = function(){
this.rotation += this.rotationSpeed;
this.distanceX += this.speed * Math.cos(this.rotation);
this.distanceY += this.speed * Math.sin(this.rotation);
}
}
function moveTracker(){ //recognize keys from keyboard
mainCanvas.clear();
tracker.speed = 0;
tracker.rotationSpeed = 0;
// Adjust the values as you need here
if (mainCanvas.key == 37) //left key
tracker.rotationSpeed = -0.5 / Math.PI;
if (mainCanvas.key == 38) //up key
tracker.speed = 3;
if (mainCanvas.key == 39) //right key
tracker.rotationSpeed = 0.5 / Math.PI;
if (mainCanvas.key == 40) //down key
tracker.speed = -3;
tracker.newPosition();
tracker.update();
}

I'm making a small sidescroller website. I want to use a png as 3 clickable elements on the map that each trigger a modal, but before that I'm trying to get them to scroll along with the background object and I guess I don't understand how to calculate their boundaries and what to pass into the function.
My rough idea for the right arrow boundary logic
And my shot in the dark (trying to follow the method I used to scroll the background):
class ClickSign {
constructor(Background, gameWidth, position, modalId) {
this.image = document.getElementById('clickImage');
this.bgWidth = Background.width;
// Canvas width
this.gameWidth = gameWidth;
this.position = position;
this.modal = document.getElementById(modalId);
this.xi = this.position.x;
this.width = 43;
this.height = 39;
this.speed = 5;
}
// Draw sprite on canvas
draw(context) {
context.drawImage(this.image, this.position.x, this.position.y, this.width, this.height);
}
update(input) {
clickSign1.draw(ctx);
// === MOVEMENT ===
// If left key && x is less than ???
if (input.keys.indexOf('ArrowLeft') != -1 && this.position.x < this.bgWidth - (this.gameWidth - this.xi)) {
this.position.x += this.speed;
}
if (input.keys.indexOf('ArrowRight') != -1 && this.position.x > this.xi - this.gameWidth) {
this.position.x -= this.speed;
}
}
const clickSign1 = new ClickSign(background, canvas.width, {x: 958, y: 364}, "WelcomeModal");
I'm relatively new to canvas and I'm trying to make a space ship type game. I have everything else I'd like down, except for the ship turning itself. I want to make the image of the ship rotate when the arrow keys are clicked.
So if the left arrow key is clicked, it will turn to face the left, and the right arrow key is clicked it will turn to face the right, and so on. I really can't figure this out, if anyone can show me how to do this I would really appreciate it.

I think in this regard you have two options.
You could have a sprite for every direction that you want the ship to face, then when you draw the image, you could choose the sprite that matches.
if(left == true) {baseImage.src='xwing3left.png';}
You could use the canvas rotate() method. This would make things more complicated, but it actually rotates the canvas and could give more opportunity to experiment.
It actually applies a transformation matrix to the canvas before it draws so you could do things like:
context.rotate(45);
context.fillRect(x,y,width,height);
Just be careful, because rotate always occurs around the origin, so you might need to use translate() as well to make it work the way you expect.
Hope this helps! :)
I want my "GamePiece" to rotate on its center point when I press either left or right button on my keyboard. I am a learner and am learning about javascript in school. I have looked at similar articles, but I found them really confusing. I am probably not going to respond in the next 18 hours, since I am writing this at night.
JavaScript:
var myGamePiece;
var myBackground;
function startGame() {
myGameArea.start();
myGamePiece = new component(30, 30, "GamePiece.png", 10, 500, "image");
myBackground = new component(656, 270, "PLACE IMAGE HERE", 0, 0, "image");
var button = document.getElementById("Play");
button.style.display = "none";
}
var myGameArea = {
canvas : document.getElementById("myCanvas"),
start : function() {
this.canvas.width = 1300;
this.canvas.height = 600;
this.canvas.style.position = "absolute";
this.canvas.style.top = "267px";
this.canvas.style.left = "303px";
this.context = this.canvas.getContext("2d");
document.body.insertBefore(this.canvas, document.body.childNodes[0]);
this.interval = setInterval(updateGameArea, 20);
window.addEventListener('keydown', function (e) {
myGameArea.keys = (myGameArea.keys || []);
myGameArea.keys[e.keyCode] = (e.type === "keydown");
});
window.addEventListener('keyup', function (e) {
myGameArea.keys[e.keyCode] = (e.type === "keydown");
});
},
clear : function(){
this.context.clearRect(0, 0, this.canvas.width, this.canvas.height);
}
};
function component(width, height, color, x, y, type) {
this.type = type;
if (type === "image") {
this.image = new Image();
this.image.src = color;
}
this.width = width;
this.height = height;
this.speedX = 0;
this.speedY = 0;
this.x = x;
this.y = y;
this.update = function() {
context = myGameArea.context;
if (type === "image") {
context.drawImage(this.image,
this.x,
this.y,
this.width, this.height);
} else {
context.fillStyle = color;
context.fillRect(this.x, this.y, this.width, this.height);
}
};
this.newPos = function() {
this.x += this.speedX;
this.y += this.speedY;
};
}
function updateGameArea() {
myGameArea.clear();
myGamePiece.speedX = 0;
myGamePiece.speedY = 0;
if (myGameArea.keys && myGameArea.keys[37]) {myGamePiece.speedX = -1; }
if (myGameArea.keys && myGameArea.keys[39]) {myGamePiece.speedX = 1; }
if (myGameArea.keys && myGameArea.keys[38]) {myGamePiece.speedY = -1; }
if (myGameArea.keys && myGameArea.keys[40]) {myGamePiece.speedY = 1; }
myGamePiece.newPos();
myGamePiece.update();

I want a circular image("GamePiece") to rotate from its center when key pressed.
Sorry I wasn't being clear
I want the ball to rotate like it is rolling on the ground. It is a 2d platform.
Like This one I want the ball to be rolling as long as i hold the button
If you think of the canvas as a piece of paper that can move around but your pen is stationary, it makes it easier to visualize how rotating an image might work. You move the whole canvas to the point where you would like to rotate (the coordinates of your image), you turn the canvas by the amount you would like to rotate, pull your pen back and up by half of your image's size (so the center is on the point you rotated) and then draw the image normally. Now when you reset your canvas/paper to its original place, the image is still drawn on the canvas in the position and rotation you wanted.
var c = document.getElementById("myCanvas");
var ctx = c.getContext("2d");
var square1 = {
x: 50,
y: 50,
w: 50,
h: 25,
rotation: -25
};
var square2 = {
x: 150,
y: 50,
w: 50,
h: 50,
rotation: 45
};
drawSquare(square1);
drawSquare(square2);
function drawSquare(square) {
ctx.save(); //saves the original state of the canvas
ctx.translate(square.x, square.y); //moves the canvas to the object's point of origin
ctx.rotate(square.rotation * Math.PI / 180); //rotates the canvas the desired amount
ctx.fillRect(-(square.w / 2), -(square.h / 2), square.w, square.h); //draws the object
ctx.restore(); //restores the canvas to its original position
}
<canvas id="myCanvas" width="200" height="100" style="border:1px solid #d3d3d3;">
Your browser does not support the HTML5 canvas tag.</canvas>
As for rotating on keypress, it would work the same way as your movement. Store a value per object for rotation, and then increment that value based on your desired rotation speed.
You really just need to use addEventListener to listen for keydown events on the document. If a keydown event fires, your event handler should check if the key that was pressed was the right arrow button - you can achieve this by accessing e.keyCode and checking that it's equal to 39 - if it is, set the images style.transform property to make it rotate.
e is an argument that is passed to your event handler (the browser takes care of passing e for you) - it contains loads of metadata about the event you're listening for.
Below is an example of what I've described above:
const imgEl = document.querySelector('#imgEl');
let offset = 0;
document.addEventListener('keydown', function(e) {
if (e.keyCode === 39) {
offset += 90;
if (offset === 360) {
offset = 0;
}
rotate(imgEl, offset);
} else if (e.keyCode === 37) {
offset -= 90;
if (offset === -360) {
offset = 0;
}
rotate(imgEl, offset);
}
});
function rotate(el, degrees) {
// Code for Safari
el.style.WebkitTransform = `rotate(${degrees}deg)`;
// Code for IE9
el.style.msTransform = `rotate(${degrees}deg)`;
// Standard syntax
el.style.transform = `rotate(${degrees}deg)`;
}
<img id="imgEl" src="https://static-s.aa-cdn.net/img/ios/1037581527/890273ca9f97b338cd84ab01f7549bc2?v=1">
hi i am trying to gat an arc to resize as it moves across the screen.
I cant seem to asign the value of increment to the radius of the arc for it to get bigger and then smaller.
please see below for the code block in question and then the entire code.
resize(){
this.up = true;
this.r = 0;
this.increment = 10;
this.ceiling = 100;
function PerformCalc() {
if (this.up == true && this.r <= this.ceiling) {
this.r += increment
if (this.r == ceiling) {
this.up = false;
}
} else {
this.up = false
this.r -= increment;
if (this.r == 0) {
this.up = true;
}
}
console.log(this.r);
}
setInterval(PerformCalc, 1000);
}
When i log out the radius to the console it gives nan for some reason.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a reference error for increment, e.g. you didn't use this.increment, same for ceiling, should be this.ceiling.
this is used by the setInterval so you save this as that so you can use them. this removes the NaN.

I've found a cool bit of code online that I'm looking to adapt into a game, but firstly I want to get multiplayer working on it using sockets like socket.io, express or eureca.io, but I'm not sure how to adapt the code I have to multiplayer, could anyone lend me a hand and show me how to do it?
Regards
A confused individual

You create a canvas in Map.prototype.generate, and you select your existing canava in html at the end in Game Script (prepaire our game canvas)
It's normaly not worked ....
