I have the following code that uses a weather plugin (https://a12k.io/reallysimpleweather), my problem is that I am wondering how to use the data that is gathered from a user via the HTML form element like below,
<script>var input = document.getElementById('cityInput').value;</script>
<script>
reallySimpleWeather.weather({
//var city = "Bend, Or";
wunderkey: '', // leave blank for Yahoo API
location: input,
woeid: '', // "Where on Earth ID" optional alternative to location
unit: 'f', // 'c' also works
success: function(weather) {
html = '<h2>'+weather.temp+'°'+weather.units.temp+'</h2>';
html += '<ul><li>'+weather.city+', '+weather.region+'</li>';
html += '<li>'+weather.currently+'</li>';
html += '<li>'+weather.wind.direction+' '+weather.wind.speed+' '+weather.units.speed+'</li></ul>';
document.getElementById('weather').innerHTML = html;
},
error: function(error) {
document.getElementById('weather').innerHTML = '<p>'+error+'</p>';
}
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
<div class="container-fluid">
<div id="weather"></div>
<form>
City: <input type="text" name="city" id="cityInput">
<input type="submit" value="Submit">
</form>
</div>
</body>
</html>
I'm unsure as to if my issue is caused because of how the page and the API I am calling might be loading, but when I open it all up in a browser I am currently just getting an error from the plugin that says "There is a problem receiving the latest weather. Try again." Im not sure if this is caused because it is not able to update itself once it is initially loaded or if its because I am incorrectly storing the variable wrong in
location: input,
Whenever I hit "submit" nothing changes expect the URL itself changes to add city=%27Bend%2C+OR%27
at the end or whatever the city entered is.
Get the value using JavaScript and put where you want:
<form action="begin-create-done.html" method="get">
City: <input type="text" name="city" id="cityInput">
<input type="submit" value="Submit">
</form>
In JavaScript:
var value = document.getElementByName( "city" ).value;
// or
// var value = document.getElementById( "cityInput" ).value;
reallySimpleWeather.weather({
wunderkey: '',
location: value,
woeid: '',
unit: 'f',
success: function(weather) {
html = '<h2>'+weather.temp+'°'+weather.units.temp+'</h2>';
html += '<ul><li>'+weather.city+', '+weather.region+'</li>';
html += '<li>'+weather.currently+'</li>';
html += '<li>'+weather.wind.direction+' '+weather.wind.speed+' '+weather.units.speed+'</li></ul>';
document.getElementById('weather').innerHTML = html;
},
error: function(error) {
document.getElementById('weather').innerHTML = '<p>'+error+'</p>';
}
});
Please, note that you will need to use the "id" attribute of the input tag to be able to catch this input through JavaScript. Not that inside your code will already used the document.getElementById() function. You will need an div to insert the html generated by the success function and this div must have the id attribute set to "weather".
Also, note that reallySimpleWeather.weather is a function that receives an object with various attributes. You can't set an variable inside this object. It is a syntax error. You must declare it before the reallySimpleWeather.weather call. Take a look above.
I'd give the input an ID (e.g. <input type="text" name="city" id="city">)to make it easy to select say with:
var city = document.getElementById('city');
Then change the line in your plugin call to reference the value:
location: city.value,
Give your input city an id and than you use getElementById to put that city in place for your location variable

So I made this codepen here https://codepen.io/shodoro/pen/xxYqXqv?editors=1111
I am trying to get whatever I type into my input form to display in my console, but everytime I type something it just shows " "
Right now I understand that I set my data to be " ", but I don't know how to make what I type to display
heres the html
<form>
<input type="text" placeholder="Street" id="street" onchange="updateInfo()">
<input type="text" placeholder="City" id="city" onchange="updateInfo()">
<input type="text" placeholder="Zipcode" id="zipcode" onchange="updateInfo()">
</form>
Here's the javascript
function updateInfo() {
const url = ""
const data = {
Street: '',
City: '',
Zipcode: '',
}
document.getElementById('street').value = data.Street
console.log('hi', data.Street)
}
Note eventually I will want to integrate this with a backend API, so whatever I type will update into the API data, but for now I just want to confirm my inputs work first
You are not getting the data you are typing as you are not looking for it.
Forms are submitted on button clicks unless the type of the form button is specifically not submit type. You need to prevent your form from submitting using the preventDefault method.
Add to that, you are assigning the empty field of the Data object into the input field's value. I think what you are trying to achieve is
data.Street = document.getElementById('street').value;
Change this
document.getElementById('street').value = data.Street
to
data.Street = document.getElementById('street').value
So the problem is this:
I try to get the text that is inside a specific paragraph with a specific id name and pass it inside a contact form .
i tried this
var src = document.getElementById("ptext"),
dest = document.getElementById("inform");
src.addEventListener('input', function() {
dest.value = src.value;
}};
Where "ptext" is the id of the element with the text of the paragraph and the "inform" is the id of the field in contact form.
The above code will trigger when the user clicks a button.
I am new in Javascript so the code above is probably wrong or faulty.
UPDATE: The HTML Code is this :
<p id="pext">Hello this is the text that is to be imported inside the form field</p>
form field:
<input type="text" name="your-subject" value="" size="40" id="inform" aria-required="true" aria-invalid="false" placeholder="Subjext">
I'm not sure if this is what you were trying to do, but if you're trying to get the text of a paragraph into a form field on a button click (useful a lot of the time with hidden form fields), then here is a code snippet to help you:
var src = document.getElementById("ptext");
var dest = document.getElementById("inform");
var getText = function () {
dest.value = src.innerText;
event.preventDefault();
return false;
}
<p id="ptext">This is some fake text that we'll put into the form.</p>
<form onsubmit="getText()">
<label for="text">Info from paragraph:</label><br>
<input type="text" id="inform" name="text"><br><br>
<input type="submit" >
</form>
Hello and welcome to Stack Overflow :)
To get the text that is inside specific paragraph, use
var src = document.getElementById("ptext").innerText;
To assign the value to an input field (which is what I'm assuming you are trying to do), use
document.getElementById("inform").value = src;
If you supply us with HTML element we could be even more precise.
I have this JavaScript code that processes and displays the value onto the same page; the value is entered using a textbox. I want to pass this value onto another page. this my code:
index.html:
<form action="display.html" method="post" id="name-form">
<p>
<label>Your full Name</label>:<br />
<input type="text" name="fullName">
</p>
<p>
<input type="submit" value="Submit">
</p>
</form>
<!-- <p id="result"></p>-->
<script>
var form = document.getElementById('name-form');
form.onsubmit = function (e) {
e.preventDefault();
var result = document.getElementById('result');
result.innerHTML = 'Hi ' + form.fullName.value;
console.log(form.fullName.value);
this.reset();
};
</script>
display.html
<p id="result"></p>
<script>
var form = document.getElementById('name-form');
form.onsubmit = function (e) {
e.preventDefault();
var result = document.getElementById('result');
result.innerHTML = 'Hi ' + form.fullName.value;
console.log(form.fullName.value);
this.reset();
};
</script>
my question is how do I get the value that is entered into the textbox to display onto another page?
If you have a static website, you should consider storing that value in localStorage. So that value will be available all across your web pages.
And if you have a dynamic website you can store that value in db and then request db for that value when you're on some other page.
Choose anyone of the approaches that fits in your case and application.
Read here about localStorage
Use cookies.
Save the name: document.cookie = "name=" + name
Load the name: name = document.cookie.replace(/(?:(?:^|.*;\s*)name\s*\=\s*([^;]*).*$)|^.*$/, "$1");
See here for a simpler way to load cookies
I have used a function to capture the Query String value of "name" - i.e. imagine a party invite site;
https://cometomyparty.com?name=phil
The function used is;
script type="text/javascript">
function getQuerystring(){
var q=document.location.toString();
q=q.split("?");
q=q[1].split("&");
var str=""
for(i=0;i<q.length;i++){
tmp=q[i].split("=")
str+=" "+tmp[1]+"<br />"
}
document.getElementById("name").innerHTML=str
}
onload=function(){
getQuerystring()
}
</script>
Then I can call the value of 'name' using id="name" where I want to use this on my page, i.e. in the heading, I could say, Phil, looking forward to having you at the party...
That's working well. The problem I have is, I have a Form I'm using as well, and within that, it has a Placeholder field, like so;
<div class="form-section">
<input type="text" name="name" class="validate-required" placeholder="Names">
How can I insert my 'id' value of 'name' into my placeholder here? The end result would be, the invite mechanic would work on the same URL, across multiple invitees, but the URL would just change. The RSVP form would reflect what is in the URL as the placeholder, yet the user could still update it if it was incorrect.
Any advice appreciated.
This find placeholder and change using jquery
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.2.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script>
$(document).ready(function(){
$('#name').attr("placeholder", "your place holder here");
});
</script>
if it's a $var also don't need quotes would be like
$('#name').attr("placeholder", $str);
Or using javascript
<script type="text/javascript">
function getQuerystring(){
var q=document.location.toString();
q=q.split("?");
q=q[1].split("&");
var str=""
for(i=0;i<q.length;i++){
tmp=q[i].split("=");
str+=" "+tmp[1]+"<br />";
}
document.getElementById("name").innerHTML=str;
document.getElementById("name").placeholder=str;
}
onload=function(){
getQuerystring();
};
</script>
document.getElementById("name").placeholder="value here" if it's a var so don't need quotes
Also you need to insert an id to your html input field
<div class="form-section">
<input type="text" id="name" name="name" class="validate-required" placeholder="Names">
I created an instant search similar to google search using JQuery. The highlighted code doesn't work. It is weird since they work fine by its own and everything else works fine. Any idea why this is happening?
Q1.
searchq() works fine, but the createq() function doesn't work, and the variable txt could be posted to other files(search.php). However, the function createq() can't POST. It does get the global variable txt after testing, but the php file(create_object.php) can't get it no matter what POST method I used. Could anyone helps to write a bit POST code which can work in my code.
Q2
I want to create a function that,when the enter is pressed, the user will be redirected to the first search result(which is anchored with an url) . To achieve this, I create a function that variable redirectUrl got the anchored url as string, however, the redirect function window.location.href doesn't work, the page simply refreshed. I tested window.location.href function by its own in another file, it works though. It is so weird that my page simply refreshed, It even refreshed when I direct to google. window.location.href("www.google.com").
Note that I didn't include the connect to database function here. Coz I think the database username and password setting would be different to yours.So please create your own if you want to test it. The mysql is set with a table is called "objects", and it has one column named "name".
Thanks in advance!
<html>
<!-- google API reference -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.3/jquery.min.js"></script>
<!-- my own script for search function -->
<center>
<form method="POST">
<input type="text" name="search" style="width:400px " placeholder="Search box" onkeyup="searchq();">
<div id="output">
</div>
</form>
</center>
<!-- instant search function -->
<script type="text/javascript">
function searchq(){
// get the value
var txt = $("input").val();
// post the value
if(txt){
$.post("search.php", {searchVal: txt}, function(result){
$("#search_output").html(result+"<div id=\"create\" onclick=\"creatq()\"><br>Not found above? Create.</div>");
});
}
else{
$("#search_output").html("");
}
};
function createq(){
// allert for test purpose: test if the txt has got by the createq function
alert(txt);
**$.post( "create_object.php",{creatVal:txt} );**
}
// if enter key pressed, redirect page to the first search result
$("#search").keypress(function(evt){
if (evt.which == 13) {
// find the first search result in DOM and trigger a click event
var redirectUrl = $('#search_output').find('a').first().attr('href');
alert(redirectUrl);
**window.location.href = "www.google.com";
window.location.href = "www.google.com";**
}
})
</script>
</html>
PHP file (search.php)
<?php
if(isset($_POST["searchVal"])){
//get the search
$search=$_POST["searchVal"];
//sort the search
$search=preg_replace("#[^0-9a-z]#i","",$search);
//query the search
echo "<br/>SELECT * from objects WHERE name LIKE '%$search%'<br/>";
$query=mysqli_query($conn,"SELECT * from objects WHERE name LIKE '%$search%'") or die("could not search!");
$count=mysqli_num_rows($query);
//sort the result
if($count==0){
$output="there was no search result";
}
else{
while($row=mysqli_fetch_assoc($query)){
$object_name=$row["name"];
$output.="<div><a href='##'>".$object_name."</a></div>";
}
}
echo $output;
}
?>
php file (create_object.php)
<?php
if(isset($_POST["createVal"])){
$name=$_POST["createVal"];
var_dump($name);
}
?>
Try to bind the input with id
var txt = $("input").val();
<input type="text" name="search" style="width:400px " placeholder="Search box" onkeyup="searchq();">
Change above to this
var txt = $("#searchinput").val();
<input type="text" id="searchinput" name="search" style="width:400px " placeholder="Search box" onkeyup="searchq();">
and I think you are trying to show the search result here
<div id="output"></div>
and the jQuery binding is this in your code
$("#search_output").html("");
So change the HTML to this
<div id="search_output"></div>
also this in our code
$("#search").keypress(function(evt){
there is not HTML element bind with it and I think you are trying to bind it with search input so change above to this
$("#searchinput").keypress(function(evt){
The above change should also resolve the window.location.href not working problem
So the HTML will be;
<form method="POST">
<input type="text" id="searchinput" name="search" style="width:400px " placeholder="Search box" onkeyup="searchq();">
<div id="search_output"></div>
</form>
and Script will be
<script type="text/javascript">
function searchq(){
// get the value
var txt = $("#searchinput").val();
// post the value
if(txt){
$.post("search.php", {searchVal: txt}, function(result){
$("#search_output").html(result+"<div id=\"create\" onclick=\"creatq()\"><br>Not found above? Create.</div>");
});
}
else{
$("#search_output").html("");
}
}
function createq(){
// allert for test purpose: test if the txt has got by the createq function
alert(txt);
**$.post( "create_object.php",{creatVal:txt} );**
}
// if enter key pressed, redirect page to the first search result
$("#searchinput").keypress(function(evt){
if (evt.which == 13) {
// find the first search result in DOM and trigger a click event
var redirectUrl = $('#search_output').find('a').first().attr('href');
alert(redirectUrl);
**window.location.href = "www.google.com";
window.location.href = "www.google.com";**
}
});
</script>
Note: If you check browser console, you may see some errors, there are some typo mistakes like missing ; in your JS too.
In the PHP, here
if($count==0){
$output="there was no search result";
}
else{
while($row=mysqli_fetch_assoc($query)){
$object_name=$row["name"];
$output.="<div><a href='##'>".$object_name."</a></div>";
}
}
$output. is wrong with dot, so change it to following
if($count==0){
$output="there was no search result";
}
else{
while($row=mysqli_fetch_assoc($query)){
$object_name=$row["name"];
$output="<div><a href='#'>".$object_name."</a></div>";
}
}
Two things:
Input search id is not defined, $("#search").keypress won't work. Change to:
< input type="text" name="search" id="search" style="width:400px " placeholder="Search box" onkeyup="searchq();" >
Div id "output", should be "search_output", as required in $("#search_output"). Change to:
< div id="search_output" >
< /div >
