You haven't given much information regarding your server or what framework you are using. Those things will determine some of this.

Yes. A user can edit that field.But you should never expose rest API for deleting any sensitive or generic data to any guest user.Expose only for authenticated user. If you are exposing some APIS for the guest user as well it would be good to mask sensitive info before presenting it to the client.
If you give power to delete stuff in your database to an authenticated user
then it is easy.
All users authenticated will have session cookies (something unique that identifies them when they are authenticated.)
You collect that in the server then you will know that it is them.
In your backend you should construct an authentication system which decides which user can do something or don't. You can restrict them from somethings or allow.
If you give power to delete stuff to guest users or any user.
You can write an API on top of your database operations and you only expose the right part of it to guest users.

requests coming from my frontend application to be approved, but, since no user is signed in there is no token to send.

Same origin policy is going to give you some basic protection, but basically if an API endpoint is exposed publicly, it's exposed publicly. If you don't want that route to be publicly accessible you need to add access control.
If you use that route to check if a user is already registered, you could, for example, merge it with the user registration route and send a different error code if the user already exists (which is not a great idea because it leaks which emails are registered on your system).
You can verify that a request was originated by a user (by authenticating him) but you cannot verify that a request comes from a particular client because of these two reasons :
If you include some API key in your client (web page or other), it's easily retrievable by everyone (the best thing you could do is offuscate it which makes things slightly harder but still possible)
If you send an API key over the network it's easily retrievable as well
The only thing you could do is prevent other web pages from calling your backend on behalf of the user, by using CORS (which is actually active by default if you dont specify an Access-Control-Allow-Origin header)
I ended up creating a kind of working solution, so basically, I create a new base64 string on my frontend and attach that to the header while making a request to the backend. The base64 string is different every minute, so even if the header is copied, it differs every minute and is combined with your secret key.

I'm building an app and would like some feedback on my approach to building the data sync process and API that supports it. For context, these are the guiding principles for my app/API:
Free: I do not want to charge people at all to use the app/API.
Open source: the source code for both the app and API are available to the public to use as they wish.
Decentralised: the API service that supports the app can be run by anyone on any server, and made available for use to users of the app.
Anonymous: the user should not have to sign up for the service, or submit any personal identifying information that will be stored alongside their data.
Secure: the user's data should be encrypted before being sent to the server, anyone with access to the server should have no ability to read the user's data.
I will implement an instance of the API on a public server which will be selected in the app by default. That way initial users of the app can sync their data straight away without needing to find or set up an instance of the API service. Over time, if the app is popular then users will hopefully set up other instances of the API service either for themselves or to make available to other users of the app should they wish to use a different instance (or if the primary instance runs out of space, goes down, etc). They may even access the API in their own apps. Essentially, I want them to be able to have the choice to be self sufficient and not have to necessarily rely on other's providing an instance on the service for them, for reasons of privacy, resilience, cost-saving, etc. Note: the data in question is not sensitive (i.e. financial, etc), but it is personal.
The user's sync journey works like this:
User downloads the app, and creates their data in the process of using the app.
When the user is ready to initially sync, they enter a "password" in the password field, which is used to create a complex key with which to encrypt their data. Their password is stored locally in plain text but is never sent to the server.
User clicks the "Sync" button, their data is encrypted (using their password) and sent to the specified (or default) API instance and responds by giving them a unique ID which is saved by the app.
For future syncs, their data is encrypted locally using their saved password before being sent to the API along with their unique ID which updates their synced data on the server.
When retrieving synced data, their unique ID is sent to the API which responds with their encrypted data. Their locally stored password is then used to decrypt the data for use by the app.
I've implemented the app in javascript, and the API in Node.js (restify) with MongoDB as a backend, so in practice a sync requests to the server looks like this:

Encryption is currently implemented using CryptoJS's AES implementation. As the app provides the user's password as a passphrase to the AES "encrypt" function, it generates a 256-bit key which which to encrypt the user's data, before being sent to the API.
That about sums up the sync process, it's fairly simple but obviously it needs to be secure and reliable. My concerns are:
As the MongoDB ObjectID is fairly easy to guess, it is possible that a malicious user could request someone else's data (as per step 2. Get sync data) by guessing their ID. However, if they are successful they will only retrieve encrypted data and will not have the key with which to decrypt it. The same applies for anyone who has access to the database on the server.
Given the above, is the CryptoJS AES implementation secure enough so that in the real possibility that a user's encrypted data is retrieved by a malicious user, they will not realistically be able to decrypt the data?
Since the API is open to anyone and doesn't audit or check the submitted data, anyone could potentially submit any data they wish to be stored in the service, for example:

Is there anything practical I can do to guard against this whilst adhering to the guiding principles above?
General abuse of the service such as users spamming initial syncs (step 1 above) over and over to fill up the space on the server; or some user's using disproportionately large amounts of server space. I've implemented some features to guard against this, such as logging IPs for initial syncs for one day (not kept any longer than that) in order to limit a single IP to a set number of initial syncs per day. Also I'm limiting the post body size for syncs. These options are configurable in the API however, so if a user doesn't like these limitations on a public API instance, they can host their own instance and tweak the settings to their liking.
So that's it, I would appreciate anyone who has any thoughts or feedback regarding this approach given my guiding principles. I couldn't find any examples where other apps have attempted a similar approach, so if anyone knows of any and can link to them I'd be grateful.
I can't really comment on whether specific AES algorithms/keys are secure or not, but assuming they are (and the keys are generated properly), it should not be a problem if other users can access the encrypted data.
You can maybe protect against abuse, without requiring other accounts, by using captchas or similar guards against automatic usage. If you require a catcha on new accounts, and set limits to all accounts on data volume and call frequency, you should be ok.
To guard against accidental clear-text data, you might generate a secondary key for each account, and then check on the server with the public secondary key whether the messages can be decrypted. Something like this:
data = secondary_key(user_private_key(cleartext))
This way the data will always be encrypted, and in worst case the server will be able to read it, but others wouldn't.
A few comments to your API :) If you're already using HTTP and POST, you don't really need an id. The POST usually returns a URI that points to the created data. You can then GET that URI, or PUT it to change:

You don't have to do it this way, but it might be easier to implement on the client side, and maybe even help with caching and cache invalidation.
I am building a simple support chat for my website using Ajax. I would like to check if the user that I am currently chatting with left the browser.
At the moment I have build in that feature by setting interval function at customer side that creates the file with name: userId.txt
In the admin area I have created an interval function that checks if userId.txt exists. If it exists, it deletes it. If the file is not recreated by the custom interval function - next time the admin function will find out that file is not there it mark customer with this userId as inactive.
Abstract representation:
customer -> interval Ajax function -> php [if no file - create a new file]
admin -> interval Ajax function -> php [if file exists - delete the file] -> return state to Ajax function and do something
I was wondering if there is any better way to implement this feature that you can think of?
My solution is to use the jquery ready and beforeunload methods to trigger an ajax post request that will notify when the user arrives and leaves.
This solution is "light" because it only logs twice per user.

1 - Tested on Chrome, FF and Opera. I don't have a mac so I couldn't test it on Safari but it should work too.
2 - I've tried the unload method but it wasn't as reliable as beforeunload.
3 - Setting async to false on the ajax request means that the statement you are calling has to complete before the next statement, this ensures that you'll get notified before the window/tab is closed.
#Gonzalon makes a good point but using a normal DB table or the filesystem for constantly updating user movement would be exhaustive to most hard disks. This would be a good reason for using shared memory functions in PHP.
You have to differentiate a bit between the original question "How do i check in real-time, if a user is logged in?" and "How can i make sure, if a user is still on the other side (in my chat)?".
For a "login system" i would suggest to work with PHP sessions.
For the "is user still there" question, i would suggest to update one field of the active session named LAST_ACTIVITY. It is necessary to write a timestamp with the last contact with the client into a store (database) and test whether that is older than X seconds.
I'm suggesting sessions, because you have not mentioned them in your question and it looks like you are creating the userID.txt file manually on each Ajax request, right? Thats not needed, unless working cookie and session-less is a development requirement.
Now, for the PHP sessions i would simply change the session handler (backend) to whatever scales for you and what makes requesting information easy.
By default PHP uses the session temp folder to create session files,
but you might change it, so that the underlying session handler becomes a mariadb database or memcache or rediska.
When the users sessions are stored into a database you can query them: "How many users are now logged in?", "Who is where?".
The answer for "How can I check in real time if a user is logged in?" is, when the user session is created and the user is successfully authenticated.
For real-time chat application there are a lot of technologies out there, from "php comet", "html5 eventsource" + "websockets" / "long polling" to "message queues", like RabbitMq/ActiveMq with publish/subscribe to specific channels.
If this is a simple or restricted environment, maybe a VPS, then you can still stick to your solution of intervalic Ajax requests. Each request might then update $_SESSION['LAST_ACTIVITY'] with a server-side timestamp. Referencing: https://stackoverflow.com/a/1270960/1163786
A modification to this idea would be to stop doing Ajax requests, when the mouse movement stops. If the user doesn't move the mouse on your page for say 10 minutes, you would stop updating the LAST_ACTIVITY timestamp. This would fix the problem of showing users who are idle as being online.
Another modification is to reduce the size of the "iam still here" REQUEST to the server by using small GET or HEADER requests. A short HEADER "ping" is often enough, instead of sending long messages or JSON via POST.

You can do it this way, but it'll be slow, inefficient, and probably highly insecure. Using a database would be a noticeable improvement, but even that wouldn't be particularly scalable, depending on how "real-time" you want this to be and how many conversations you want it to be able to handle simultaneously.
You'd be much better off using a NoSQL solution such as Redis for any actions that you'll need to run frequently (ie: "is user online" checks, storing short-term conversation updates, and checking for conversation updates at short intervals).
Then you'd use the database for more long-term tasks like storing user information and saving active conversations at regular intervals (maybe once per minute, for example).
Why Ajax and not Websockets? Surely a websocket would give you a considerably faster chat system, wouldn't require generating and checking a text file, would not involve a database lookup and you can tell instantly if the connection is dropped.
I would install the https://github.com/nrk/predis library. So at the time the user authenticates, It publishes a message to Redis server.
Then you can set-up a little node server on the back-end - something simple like:

I would suggest using in built HTML5 session storage for this purpose. This is supported by all modern browsers so we will not face issues for the same.
This will help us to be efficient and quick to recognize if user is online. Whenever user moves mouse or presses keys update session storage with date and time. Check it periodically to see if it is empty or null and decide user left the site.
Depending on your resources you may opt for websockets or the previous method called long pool request. Both ensure a bidirectional communication between the server and the client. But they may be expensive on resources.

Send a message to user (like: "behave or I ban you").
Update user status/location. (for events to know when attendants is arriving)

You do not need to hit ajax request to create a file on server as cookies are accessible by javascript/jquery.
Cookies have an option to set the time interval so would automatically delete themselves after a time, so you will not need php script to delete that.
Cookies are accessible by php, so when ever you need to check if user is still active or not, you can simply check if the cookie exist
If it were aspnet I would say signalR... but for php perhaps you could look into Rachet it might help with a lot of what you are trying to accomplish as the messages could be pushed to the clients instead of client polling.
Imo, there is no need for setting up solutions with bidirectional communications. You only want to know if a user is still logged in or attached to the system. If I understand you right, you only need a communication from server to client. So you can try SSE (server sent events) for that. The link gives you an idea, how to implement this with PHP.
The idea is simple. The server knows if user is attached or not. He could send something like "hey, user xyz is still logged in" or "hey, user xzy seems not to be logged in any more" and the client only listens to that messages and can react to the messages (e.g. via JavaScript).
The advantage is: SSE is really good for realtime applications, because the server only has to send data and the client has only to listen, see also the specification for this.
If you really need bidirectional communications or can't go with the two dependencies mentioned in the specs, it's not the best decision to use SSE, of course.

Holy cow... I'd like to get some access token for you #facebook, but my app doesn't make use of your authentication tools/plugins.
ANYWAY, I tried with FB.getLoginStatus(); but doesn't work, because the only way it can return an access_token is if the user is actually connected to the application. My users may not even be logged to facebook!
So, ¿How can I get an access_token to be stored into a variable, and later be used to get /{my-page}/posts?
I've already payed a look to this SO question, but it doesn't solves my problem, simply because there are no such "generic tokens".
I've also read https://developers.facebook.com/docs/facebook-login/access-tokens/ and that also relies on tokens generated through facebook login methods... So, can't I display a list of fb page's posts in my website, without being connected into facebook, hence an application?

You could either use an page or an app access token, but as you'd be using them on the client-side, neither of them are an option.

Note that because this request uses your app secret, it must never be made in client-side code or in an app binary that could be decompiled. It is important that your app secret is never shared with anyone. Therefore, this API call should only be made using server-side code.
I'd strongly recommend to build a simple server-side script (PHP for example) to proxy the request to the Graph API. You could then call this via AJAX for example and load the posts asynchronously (and alse get rid of the FB JS SDK!). There is NO way to handle this in a secure manner if you don't want to use FB Login for all of your users (which also doesn't make much sense IMHO).

Since pages' posts are always public, it only needs a valid access token to retrieve page posts.

You only require an access token.
My suggestion would be;
- Generate an access token for yourself (no extra permission needed)
- request page-id/posts
This way you don't require other users to be connected to facebook, you can simply requests page-id/posts to retrieve posts with access token you generated for yourself.

TIP: As long as posts are public, you only require a valid access token, it doesn't need to be user or page specific.
If I have an XML database on my web server;

P.S.: Unless you have a really good reason, I really, really, really, don't want to use SQL. I prefer to be able to read my databases, and I like the tangibility and versatility of XML.
Edit: After a little more research, I learned that PHP supports a system for storing SESSION[] variables. This is perfect for me because I am, in fact, using sessions!
The W3C says:
"A PHP session variable is used to store information about, or change settings for a user session. Session variables hold information about one single user, and are available to all pages in one application."
Much better than exposing various data in the address bar. =)
As long as your DB file is inaccessable from HTTP (i.e. locked by a .htaccess or equivalent) and other protocols (i.e. not sitting in a directory accesable by anonymous FTP), the only risk is to (inadvertently) let the hash&salt be collected among a bunch of other user-related data and sent to your clients.
If you have requests equivalent to the SQL * selector, that might be somewhat of a problem. You might want to put the critical data into a different DB file and encapsulate the accesses in an interface dedicated to user registration and login, just to make sure no other piece of code will be able to grab them (even by mistake) from your main DB.
