I'm working on an assignment in which we need to use dom 2 in order to validate some user input, however I'm having a hard time just getting the basics. Between my professors accent and horrible writing its hard to make things out but this code I wrote up
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>Form checking</title>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
<style type="text/css">
span{
visibility: hidden;
color: red;
}
</style>
<script>
function invalid(event){
var val = event.target.value;
var regex = /^\d{3}-\d{3}-\d{4}$/;
if(val.match(regex))
document.getElementById("error").style.visibility = hidden;
else
document.getElementById("error").style.visibility = visible;
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
<span id="error">Should be in form xxx-xxx-xxxx</span><br>
Phone Number: <input type="text" id="phoneNumber">
<script>
var pn = document.getElementById("phoneNumber");
pn.addEventListener("blur", invalid, false);
</script>
</body>
</html>
follows his notes exactly, or as close as I've been able to decipher, yet I can't even slightly get it to work let alone trying to do the assignment. Can someone please point out what is wrong with it? And please keep it simple I've only been taking the class for 2 weeks so I know next to nothing.
How's this: http://jsfiddle.net/6D2cJ/
You forgot to put quotes on the style visibility. It was expecting a variable but instead received nothing. Putting quotes around it makes a string.
Also, you forgot to add curly brackets for the if and else statement.
function invalid(event){
var val = event.target.value;
var regex = /^\d{3}-\d{3}-\d{4}$/;
if(val.match(regex)) {
document.getElementById("error").style.visibility = "hidden";
}
else {
document.getElementById("error").style.visibility = "visible";
}
}
Here you go.. fixed some syntax errors and other stuff:
function invalid(event){
var val = event.target.value;
var regex = /^\d{3}-\d{3}-\d{4}$/;
if(!val.match(regex)){
document.getElementById("error").style.visibility = 'visible';
} else {
document.getElementById("error").style.visibility = 'hidden';
}
}
var pn = document.getElementById("phoneNumber");
pn.addEventListener("blur", invalid, false);

I have written this code which I thought was correct, but although it runs without error, nothing is replaced.
Also I am not sure what event I should use to execute the code.
The test a simple template for a landing page. The tokens passed in on the url will be used to replace tags or tokens in the template.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>TODO supply a title</title>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
<script>
// gets passed variables frm the url
function getQueryVar(str) {
return 'Newtext'; // JUST SCAFFOLD FOR TESTING
}
function searchReplace() {
/**/
var t = 0;
var tags = Array('keyword', 'locale', 'advert_ID');
if (document.readyState === 'complete') {
var str = document.body.innerText;
for (t = 0; t < tags.length; t++) {
//replace in str every instance of the tag with the correct value
if (tags[t].length > 0) {
var sToken = '{ltoken=' + tags[t] + '}';
var sReplace = getQueryVar(tags[t]);
str.replace(sToken, sReplace);
} else {
var sToken = '{ltoken=' + tags[t] + '}'
var sReplace = '';
str.replace(sToken, sReplace);
//str.replace(/sToken/g,sReplace); //all instances
}
}
document.body.innerText = str;
}
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
<H1> THE HEADING ONE {ltoken=keyword}</H1>
<H2> THE HEADING TWO</H2>
<H3> THE HEADING THREE</H3>
<P>I AM A PARAGRAPH {ltoken=keyword}</P>
<div>TODO write content</div>
<input type="button" onclick="searchReplace('keyword')">
</body>
</html>
So when the documment has finished loading I want to execute this code and it will replace {ltoken=keyword} withe value for keyword returned by getQueryVar.
Currently it replaces nothing, but raises no errors
Your problem is the fact you don't reassign the replacement of the string back to it's parent.
str.replace(sToken,sReplace);
should be
str = str.replace(sToken,sReplace);
The .replace method returns the modified string, it does not perform action on the variable itself.
Use innerHTML instead innerText and instead your for-loop try
tags.forEach(t=> str=str.replace(new RegExp('{ltoken='+ t+'}','g'), getQueryVar(t)))
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>TODO supply a title</title>

// gets passed variables frm the url
function getQueryVar(str)
{
return'Newtext';// JUST SCAFFOLD FOR TESTING
}
function searchReplace() {
/**/
var t=0;
var tags =Array('keyword','locale','advert_ID');
if (document.readyState==='complete'){
var str = document.body.innerHTML;
tags.forEach(t=> str=str.replace(new RegExp('{ltoken='+ t+'}','g'), getQueryVar(t)));
//tags.forEach(t=> str=str.replace(new RegExp('{ltoken='+ tags[t]+'}', 'g'), getQueryVar(tags[t])));
document.body.innerHTML=str;
}
}
</script>
</head>

<H3> THE HEADING THREE</H3>

I've a web page which include a JavaScript function to convert the multiple lines to a comma separated data. Here is the code:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>Add case</title>
<script type="text/javascript">
function replaceSeperator() {
var incident_box = document.getElementById("TextBoxIncidentID")
var content = incident_box.value;
//incident_box.innerHTML = content.replace(/\n/g, ",");
var ctt = content.replace(/\n/g, ",");
var lastchar = ctt.substr(ctt.length - 1);
if (lastchar != ",") {
incident_box.innerHTML = ctt;
} else {
incident_box.innerHTML = ctt.substr(0,ctt.length - 1);
}
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
<textarea name="TextBoxIncidentID" rows="2" cols="20" id="TextBoxIncidentID" textwrapping="Wrap" acceptreturn="true" onmouseout="replaceSeperator()" style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:Medium;height:60px;width:430px;margin-top: 5px;"></textarea>
</body>
</html>
It works fine in IE:
The line break replaced to comma
But it doesn't working as expected in Chrome and Firefox:
Line break replaced to comma at Dev Tool but it doesn't present on Chrome
Does any one know how to fix it?
Thanks
Use value property. innerHTML is for another purposes. Even textarea has the closing tag, the inner content is the textarea value:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>Add case</title>
<script type="text/javascript">
function replaceSeperator() {
var incident_box = document.getElementById("TextBoxIncidentID")
var content = incident_box.value;
//incident_box.innerHTML = content.replace(/\n/g, ",");
var ctt = content.replace(/\n/g, ",");
var lastchar = ctt.substr(ctt.length - 1);
if (lastchar != ",") {
incident_box.value = ctt;
} else {
incident_box.value = ctt.substr(0,ctt.length - 1);
}
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
<textarea name="TextBoxIncidentID" rows="2" cols="20" id="TextBoxIncidentID" textwrapping="Wrap" acceptreturn="true" onmouseout="replaceSeperator()" style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:Medium;height:60px;width:430px;margin-top: 5px;"></textarea>
</body>
</html>
You are missing a ; at the end of
var incident_box = document.getElementById("TextBoxIncidentID")
Some browsers are more forgiving to this than others.
Please note that I am not using classes. I haven't found an answer for this SPECIFIC question.
Using javascript, how can I program a button to change the stylesheet each time the button is clicked?
I've tried different if, else if and else, but when I try them, it breaks the code (ie, it will change the color to blue if red, but not back again).
It works with 2 buttons, but getting it to change each time a single button is clicked seems to be eluding me. I got feed up and programmed a second button to change it back.
This works for 2 buttons:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<title>"Your Title Here"</title>
<link id="um" rel="stylesheet" href="stylesheet1.css">
<style>
</style>
</head>
<body>
<p>booga</p>
<button id="x" onclick="myFunction()">blue</button>
<button id="x1" onclick="myFunction1()">red</button>
<script>
function myFunction() {
if (document.getElementById("um").href = "stylesheet1.css"){
document.getElementById("um").href = "stylesheet2.css"}
}
function myFunction1() {
if (document.getElementById("um").href = "stylesheet2.css"){
document.getElementById("um").href = "stylesheet1.css"}
}
</script>
</body>
I would like to be able to get rid of the second button and second function and have it all with one button.
EDIT...
I tried this, and it failed.
function myFunction() {
if (document.getElementById("um").href == "stylesheet1.css")
{document.getElementById("um").href = "stylesheet2.css"};
else {document.getElementById("um").href = "stylesheet1.css"}
}
Make sure you're using == instead of = for your comparisons!
if (document.getElementById("um").href == "stylesheet1.css")
etc
Try this:
<button id="x" onclick="myFunction()">Change</button>
<script>
function myFunction() {
var link = document.getElementById("um");
var segments = link.href.split('/');
var currentStyle = segments[segments.length - 1];
var style = (currentStyle == 'stylesheet1.css') ? 'stylesheet2'
: 'stylesheet1';
document.getElementById("um").href = style + ".css"
}
</script>
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<title>"Your Title Here"</title>
<link id="um" rel="stylesheet" href="stylesheet1.css">
</head>
<body>
<p>booga</p>
<button onclick="myFunction('um','stylesheet1.css', 'stylesheet2.css')">swap</button>
<script>
function myFunction(id,a,b) {
var el = document.getElementById(id);
var hrefStr;
if(~el.href.indexOf(a)) {
hrefStr = el.href.replace(a, b);
el.href = hrefStr;
} else {
hrefStr = el.href.replace(b, a);
el.href = hrefStr;
}
}
</script>
</body>
</html>
My task for my Javascript class is to create a script for this page that changes the image every 3 seconds. I think my code is correct, however Firebug tells me "document.getElementByID is not a function." Can someone show me what I am doing incorrectly?
This is my JS script.
<script type="text/javascript">
var i = 0
var lightArray = ["pumpkinOff.gif", "pumpkinOn.gif"]
var currentLight = document.getElementByID('light')
// ChangeLight Method Prototype
function changeLight() {
currentLight.src = lightArray[i++];
if (i == lightArray.length) {
i = 0;
}
}
setInterval(changeLight, 3000)
</script>
Here is my edited HTML code:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>JavaScript for Programmers</title>
</head>
<body>
<h2>Happy Halloween!</h2>
<img id="pumpkin" src="pumpkinoff.gif" alt="pumpkin">
<script src="../Script/spooky.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
Incorrect capitalisation on
var currentLight = document.getElementByID('light')
Should be:
var currentLight = document.getElementById('pumpkin')
I have attached a working fiddle:
http://jsfiddle.net/11csf4k2/
It's a typo it should be:
var currentLight = document.getElementById('light'); //Not ID
It should be Id not ID:
document.getElementById('light');
Also note that you don't have element with id light on your page. It probably should be
document.getElementById('pumpkin');
Below is my html page:
<html>
<head>
<title>My Cat website</title>
</head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="script12.js"></script>
<body>
<h1>
My_first_cat_website
</h1>
</body>
</html>
Below is my JavaScript:
window.onload=initall;
function initall()
{
var ans=document.getElementsByTagName('a')[0].firstChild.data;
alert(ans);
if(ans<10)
{
alert(ans);
}
var newans=ans.subString(0,9)+"...";
}
Here my code is not going into if block. My requirement is if var "ans" length is above 10 then append it with ... else throw an alert directly. Can anyone help me?
Here is Solution using data property
window.onload=initall;
function initall()
{
var ans=document.getElementsByTagName('a')[0].firstChild.data;
if(ans.length<10)
{
alert("hmmm.. its less then 10!");
}
var newans= ans.substring(0,9)+"...";
document.getElementsByTagName('a')[0].firstChild.data = newans;
}
Here is it live view you wise to check example: http://jsbin.com/obeleh
I have never heard of the data property on a DOM element. Thanks to you, I learned it's a property on textNode elements (the same as nodeValue).
Also, using getElementsByTagName when the ID is available is unperformant.
subString doesn't work, it is substring. The case is important for methods as javascript is case sensitive (like most programming languages).
The other thing you're missing is an else. In your code, the var newans... will always be ran.
Here is something working:
window.onload = function() {
var ans = document.getElementById( 'message' ).textContent;
if ( ans.length < 10 ) {
alert( ans );
}
else {
var newans = ans.substring( 0, 9 ) + '...';
}
}
