Basically, my application needs to do at least the following things:
drag & drop
zooming & panning
image rotation
ability to manipulate canvas objects with code
svg import (if possible, not important though)
My requirements are quite basic but is it me or do these canvas libraries seem so limited in functionality? I know the canvas spec isn't final, but I've seen some stunning canvas projects out there.
I've had good experiences with kinetic js (http://kineticjs.com/).
it seems to cover all your requirements.
see also: Zoom and Pan in KineticJS
I think Konva will be suitable for you. It is based on KineticJs which is no longer maintained by its author. But Konva is maintained and it has very nice documentation. It seems to cover all your requirements.

I recently decided to use google maps with overlays to display some custom maps in the entire body of my web-page but I'm afraid google maps is a bit too much than what I need. I basically just need to place objects on a canvas, then zoom and pan that canvas. I tried patching something together myself but realized that things became complicated quite fast. So I'm wondering if there is some sort of library to help me out with my problem?
I have heard of kinetic.js but it seems to be a bit outdated.
You could try jquery.panzoom
I've personally used the angular variant of this, but it was using the source as this.

I've been playing with this rather spiffing online embeddable image editor from Aviary, and it does exactly what I need it to, namely:
embeddable in my site as HTML/JS
reasonably priced
only basic, fun features
completely idiot proof so even the most ham-fisted can thrash their way to something passable; or to put it another way, I don't want/need a traditional image editing interface like Photoshop - the way that Aviary have done it is pretty much spot on for my needs
However, in the documentation, they indicate that this is only suitable for web-resolution images, while I need to allow users to edit hi-res images as they will eventually be sent to a printer.
Does anyone know of anything comparable to this Aviary editor that can work with hi-res images?
Have you tried pixlr? As far as I'm aware, that editor is hi-res-capable.
In answer to my own question, it turns out that if you pay for the Enterprise version of the software, then full resolution is supported.

I know these types of "questions" are discouraged but since I have quite specific needs I believe this question does have a definitive answer.
I need an image carousel that meets the following requirements:
I can make my own transitions (basically I want to apply a class and have a CSS transition)
Mobile support with swipe
My own markup if possible
Manual switching as well as automatic switching
Is there any library like this out there?
I've tried Flexslider but it doesn't allow me to have my own transitions.
Maybe I'm better off just using Swipe JS and writing my own transitions, though there are many edge cases to be aware of so I'd rather not do this myself.
jQuery Cycle is a very good plug in that mostly does what you want.
http://jquery.malsup.com/cycle/
You can use any of the default transitions or create your own named ones in the options.
http://jquery.malsup.com/cycle/adv2.html
I ended up using a custom built version for desktop and SwipeJS for touch devices.

Which 3d surface chart library out there do you recommand? It is ok if it is flash or silverlight, as long as it supports dynamic data update thru json.. Thank you!
Gil.
How about javascript-surface-plot?
As for javascript not being fast enough, what do you think this is, 2009?
I am not entirely sure what you are after but one option for 3D charting with Javascript would be Canvas 3D Graph
Edit
Surface plotting is quite CPU-intensive and requires a good graphics API, so Javascript doesn't cut it.
Unfortunately there aren't any ready-made 3D charting libraries for Flash or Silverlight that support surface plotting, only a couple of 3D engines, for example Away3D.
If you are willing to go with applets then JFreeChart might help you (JFreeChart in an Applet). You can control the applet with Javascript and feed it whatever data necessary.
Jmol is used in SAGE for 3D graph plotting. It runs as an applet. It is quite heavy-weight, and it even has a console. Check out the SAGE sources for usage.

Does any one know of any good javascript 3d graphing utility? I know that every site ever recommends Canvas 3d Graph but it is actually quite limiting. For one it only allows graphing with datasets that are within the 1000. Though it does have some capability (with a bit of code modifying) to graph data that are a bit out of its range, nothing out of a complete revamp will allow graphing of data based on time or with values hugely larger than 1000. (I have data values that range into the billions.)
Or should I abandon all hope and either write one myself or look to other technology?
Google O3D is a library for producing 3d-graphics using Javascript. It also has a deprecated plugin, but the newest version uses WebGL.
Check it out here: http://code.google.com/p/o3d/
You'll definitely need to build a small graphing-shell around it, but it shouldn't be hard, especially not if you look closely to the examples provided on the Google-code website.
It uses OpenGL as a backend-technology: rendering lots of polygons, on reasonable hardware, is not a problem at all.
