positioning elements right property based on other dynamic values with CSS JS - javascript

I have a primary menu with two sub-menus nested inside. the sub menus are revealed on a hover, and have a dynamically changing width based on the content inside. I need the sub menus position relative to the main menu to be: the left border of the sub menu is touching the right border of the main menu and they are not overlapping. Common functionality of a sub menu on hover reveal I suppose.
So I believe the math for the css right positioning is something like:
right: -elements current width in px
I don't believe theres a way in css to insert the elements current width value into the right position so I have tried with JS
let subMenuBounds = subMenuOne.getBoundingClientRect()
let subMenuTwoBounds = subMenuOne.getBoundingClientRect()
subMenuOne.style.right = `-${subMenuBounds}px`
subMenuTwo.style.right = `-${subMenuTwoBounds}px`
the problem with this is the subMenus have no bounds until I hover over the menu, because the display is set to: none.
any solution to this?
let subMenuBounds = subMenuOne.getBoundingClientRect()
let subMenuTwoBounds = subMenuOne.getBoundingClientRect()
subMenuOne.style.right = `-${subMenuBounds}px`;
subMenuTwo.style.right = `-${subMenuTwoBounds}px`;
.sub-menu-one,
.sub-menu-two {
height: auto;
width: auto;
min-width: 12rem;
position: absolute;
top: 0;
right: ??;
border-radius: 5px;
display: none;
opacity: 0;
transition: all 350ms;
border: 1px solid #e4e4e4;
background-color: #2e1a04;
box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.35) 0px 5px 15px;
z-index: 3;
}
.menu-row:nth-child(2):hover > .sub-menu-one,
.menu-row:nth-child(3):hover > .sub-menu-two {
opacity: 1;
transition-delay: 350ms;
display: block;
}
<div class="menu">
<div class="menu-container">
<div class="menu-row">
<i class="fa-solid fa-book"></i>
<h2>Syno • Checker</h2>
<span id="menu-close-btn">X</span>
</div>
<div class="menu-row">
<p>Definition</p>
<i class="fa-solid fa-caret-right"></i>
<div class='sub-menu-one'>
<div>
<blockquote>
<p id="selected-word"></p>
</blockquote>
</div>
<div class="definition"></div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="menu-row">
<p>Synonyms</p>
<i class="fa-solid fa-caret-right"></i>
<div class='sub-menu-two'>
<div>
<blockquote>
<p id="selected-word-two"></p>
</blockquote>
</div>
<div class="options"></div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>

You should be able to do this without JavaScript. Here I set the .menu-row to display: flex. The result is that all child nodes will be aligned in a row, one after the other. So, now the sub menu shows up right to the menu text.
p {
margin: 0;
}
.menu-row {
display: flex;
flex-direction: row;
align-items: flex-start;
}
.sub-menu-one,
.sub-menu-two {
min-width: 12rem;
border-radius: 5px;
display: none;
opacity: 0;
transition: all 350ms;
border: 1px solid #e4e4e4;
background-color: #2e1a04;
box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.35) 0px 5px 15px;
z-index: 3;
}
.menu-row:nth-child(2):hover>.sub-menu-one,
.menu-row:nth-child(3):hover>.sub-menu-two {
opacity: 1;
transition-delay: 350ms;
display: block;
}
<div class="menu">
<div class="menu-container">

How to align boxes right under each other with flexbox

The point is that I want to implement this layout with html, css and js.
When you click on the button, the container should alternately become taller/smaller.
picture 1
picture 2
However, no fixed height should be passed, as is currently implemented.
Without using max-height, scaleY.
Also, text5 should be right under text2 and text6 right under text3 (as you can see in the picture) without using width or something similar.
The flex items should only be as large as the content.
I've also searched for solutions, but the search results weren't what I was looking for.

How to push all lower elements down when expanding a div?

I have a video iframe that expands when clicking a button. This is contained inside of a header for the page which has 100vh height (full screen). When the video expands, it pushes the rest of the content in the header up in order to have everything vertically centred within the header. Instead, I would like to increase the height of the header div beyond 100vh to 100vh plus the video height. However, the code I have so far isn't working.
LINK TO PAGE
$(document).ready(function(){
$(".video" ).click(function() {
$(".header").height("+=315");
document.getElementById("video__player").style.maxHeight = "50vw";
document.getElementById("video-btn").style.display = "none";
});
});
.header {height: 100vh; width: 100vw;}
.header__content {height: calc(100vh); width: 100%; display: flex; display: -webkit-flex;}

.video__container {text-align: center;}

.play-btn {width: 20px; height: 20px; vertical-align: middle;}
.video__player {overflow: hidden; width: 300px; max-height: 0px; transition: max-height 0.5s ease-in-out; -webkit-transition: max-height 0.5s ease-in-out; margin: auto;}

The margin of .header__content--container is currently set to auto. Change the margin to some hard-coded value like, for example, 300px, and it works like you want it to.
EDIT: the requested function
function setMarginTop() {
const $header = $(".header__content--container");
const marginTop = $header.css("margin-top");
$header.css("margin-top", marginTop);
}

iPad and iPhone not scrolling to anchored div

I have tried to get both an iPad and iPhone to work with my current pen and it seems that I can't get it. I have tried to use and SomeContent as well as the normal . The will simply not scroll down to the div. I've tried to cut out the javascript, bootstrap, css, and even cut the page down to rudementary html for awhile but none of the tests seemed to fix it.
Included in the file are Bootstrap.js, Jquery.min.js, Bootstrap.min.css, and font-awesome.min.css
You can find the pen here: Gregory Buhler Portfolio

Trying to get equal height columns with expanding text whilst using overflow with CSS transitions

Ok, I have this code I have done up here on how I need this solution to function:
Codepen: http://codepen.io/anon/pen/MaOrGr?editors=110
HTML:
<div class="container">
<div class="wrapper row">
<div class="box col-sm-4">
<div class="cta-background">
</div>
<div class="rollover-wrap">
<div class="details">
some text
</div>
<div class="summary">
fhdhjofsdhohfsohfsouhofuhufhoufdsh
fskjoifhspofhdsohfdsohfohfsd
fsdujhofhofdshofhohfds
fdsolhfsdohfodshfohfdsohfosd
fsdljhfdsouhfdsohhfso
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="box col-sm-4">
<div class="cta-background">
</div>
<div class="rollover-wrap">
<div class="details">
some text
</div>
<div class="summary">
fhdhjofsdhohfsohfsouhofuhufhoufdsh
fskjoifhspofhdsohfdsohfohfsd
fsdujhofhofdshofhohfds
fdsolhfsdohfodshfohfdsohfosd
fsdljhfdsouhfdsohhfso
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="box col-sm-4">
<div class="cta-background">
</div>
<div class="rollover-wrap">
<div class="details">
some text
</div>
<div class="summary">
fhdhjofsdhohfsohfsouhofuhufhoufdsh
fskjoifhspofhdsohfdsohfohfsd
fsdujhofhofdshofhohfds
fdsolhfsdohfodshfohfdsohfosd
fsdljhfdsouhfdsohhfso
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
SCSS / CSS:
.wrapper {
.box {
position: relative;
height: 340px;
overflow: hidden;
margin-top: 10px;
&:hover > .rollover-wrap {
bottom: 260px;
}
.cta-background {
background-image: url('http://ideas.homelife.com.au/media/images/8/2/8/9/0/828947-1_ll.jpg');
background-size: cover;
height: 260px;
}
.rollover-wrap {
position: relative;
bottom: 0;
transition: 0.3s;
z-index: 2;
}
.details {
font-size: 24px;
font-weight: bold;
padding: 20px;
background-color: gray;
height: 80px;
}
.summary {
height: 260px;
font-size: 15px;
padding: 15px;
background-color: #E29222;
z-index: 2;
}
}
}
This is working fine and is the effect I am wanting; however, I need to support the gray area being able to have multiple lines of text, and if one does, then the other adjacent gray sections should expand to the same height.
At the moment it uses fixed heights to assist with hiding and bringing in the transition on hover, but this hinders the ability for the gray area to expand. Even if it could expand, the other boxes need to match the height.
I have tried using flexbox and changing the html layout to no avail.
I don't mind if the image & summary sections have a fixed height, but the gray area needs to be able to expand to it's content.
Is there anyway to do what I want to do without JavaScript? If not, is there a clean way to do it with JavaScript/jQuery that doesn't have too much of a messy fallback?
