Random misplacement of a div - javascript

I'm making a website for myself and it has a projects page and I made a js script to auto add each of the projects using a json file. I have 4 projects in the json file so far but one of them is acting up.
Circled in red is the div that is messed up.
Here is the css for those divs:
#img {
vertical-align: top;
display: inline-block;
border-radius: 10px 10px 0px 0px;
width: 340px;
}
#title {
margin-top: 40px;
vertical-align: top;
font-weight: bold;
font-size: 30px;
float: left;
margin-left: 5px;
display: inline-block;
}
#desc {
float: left;
margin-left: 5px;
display: inline-block;
}
Now here is the js script that is adding them:
$.getJSON('https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Pinball3D/andysthings/main/registy.json',
function(data){
console.log(data);
var i = 0;
console.log(data.length, i < data.length)
while (i < data.length) {
dat = data[i];
var a = document.createElement("a");
a.href=dat.url;
var li = document.createElement("li");
li.id="item";
var img = document.createElement("img");
img.src=dat.img;
img.id="img";
li.appendChild(img);
var title = document.createElement("div");
title.id="title";
title.textContent=dat.name;
li.appendChild(title);
var desc = document.createElement("div");
desc.id="desc";
desc.textContent=dat.desc;
li.appendChild(desc);
a.appendChild(li);
document.querySelector("#grid").appendChild(a);
i++;
}
});
I don't know what is causing that element to be out of place.

The reason for that is float: left; and display: inline-block; on the title and description.
The purpose of float is to make text float around an element if there is enough space (like an image or drop caps)
Based on the image it is not clear why you use display: inline-block; and float at all. As it seems that the description should always be below the title.
So remove float: left and change inline-block to block for both title and description.
Nowadays float should only be used if you really need to let float text around and element and not for other layout purposes. For layouts where float was used you should use flex or grid instead.
Additional having a as a child of ul is not valid. And a li as a child of a isn't either.
$.getJSON('https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Pinball3D/andysthings/main/registy.json',
function(data) {
//console.log(data);
var i = 0;
//console.log(data.length, i < data.length)
while (i < data.length) {
dat = data[i];
var li = document.createElement("li");
li.id = "item";
var a = document.createElement("a");
a.href = dat.url;
var img = document.createElement("img");
img.src = dat.img;
img.id = "img";
a.appendChild(img);
var title = document.createElement("div");
title.id = "title";
title.textContent = dat.name;
a.appendChild(title);
var desc = document.createElement("div");
desc.id = "desc";
desc.textContent = dat.desc;
a.appendChild(desc);
li.appendChild(a);
document.querySelector("#grid").appendChild(li);
i++;
}
});
body {
font-family: sans-serif;
}
#img {
vertical-align: top;
display: inline-block;
border-radius: 10px 10px 0px 0px;

}
#title {

Yet again, CSS being problematic again

So basically this is Day 3 (other days, I pretty much did nothing to complete the game) of making a game from HTML5. So I'm making a moves system right now, and I guess I'm doing well? (mainly because I'm not sure if I provided the user with too many moves...) But the thing about it is that, I'm kind of having ANOTHER styling issue.
As you can see in the image: I've CLEARLY set dimensions up for the headerDisplay class/id, but NO, it goes out of the div's dimensions and even goes on the grid. I'm also aiming for the time and moves text to be stuck right on top of the grid, similarly to how the word bank is stuck to the bottom of the grid.
I was also aiming for a button that says refresh right under the word bank, however no matter what I tried, the button would just be right the score text, which looks like this:
When I am aiming for this:
Code:
<div class="content" id="content">
<div class="headerDisplay" id="headerDisplay">
</div>
<div class="gameArea" id="gameArea">
</div>
<div class="wordBank" id="wordBank">
</div>
<div class="bottomMenu" id="bottomMenu">
</div>
</div>
::before,
::after {
box-sizing: border-box;
font-family: Arial, sans-serif;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
}
.content {
display: grid;
grid-template-rows: repeat(3, max-content);
margin-block: 1em;
margin-inline: auto;
width: 512px;
}
.bottomMenu {
font-size: 24px;
text-align: right;
}
.wordBank {
border: 2.5px solid #000;
border-radius: 5px;
display: flex;
font-size: 1.6em;
min-height: 3em;
justify-content: space-between;
padding: 0.25em;
}
.wordBank span:nth-child(even) {
align-self: end;
}
.gameArea {
font-size: 0;
justify-self: center;
max-width: 100%;
}
.cell {
border: 1px solid black;
width: 50px;
font-size: 1rem;
height: 50px;
display: inline-block;
}
.headerDisplay {
width: 100%;
height: 76.8px;
text-align: right;
font-size: 1.6em;
}
let score = 0;
const headerDisplay = document.getElementById("headerDisplay")
const bottomMenu = document.getElementById("bottomMenu");
const wordBank = document.getElementById("wordBank")
const gameArea = document.getElementById("gameArea")
const rows = document.getElementsByClassName("gridRow");
const cells = document.getElementsByClassName("cell");
const words = [ // snippet
"ability",
"able",
"about",
"above",
"abroad",
"absence",
"absent",
"absolute",
"accept",
"accident",
"accord",
"account",
"accuse",
"accustom",
"ache",
"across",
"act"
]
let selectedWords = [];
bottomMenu.innerHTML = "<p>Score: " + score;
bottomMenu.innerHTML += "<button>Refresh"
while (selectedWords.length < 5) {
const selectedWord = words[Math.floor(Math.random() * words.length)];
if (selectedWord.length <= 9) {
wordBank.innerHTML += "<span>" + selectedWord + "</span>"
selectedWords.push(selectedWord);
}
}
let longestWord = selectedWords.reduce((a, b) => a.length < b.length ? b : a, "")
let charCount = longestWord.length
var moves = charCount * 5
headerDisplay.innerHTML += "<p>Time: "
headerDisplay.innerHTML += "<p>Moves: " + moves
function makeRows(rowNum) {
for (let r = 0; r < rowNum; r++) {
let row = document.createElement("div");
gameArea.appendChild(row).className = "gridRow";
}
}
function makeColumns(cellNum) {
for (let i = 0; i < rows.length; i++) {
for (let j = 0; j < cellNum; j++) {
let newCell = document.createElement("div");
rows[j].appendChild(newCell).className = "cell";
}
}
}
function defaultGrid() {
makeRows(charCount);
makeColumns(charCount);
}
defaultGrid();
To fix header you need to set its height to fit content, so it will be over your grid even if you change it later:
.headerDisplay {
width: 100%;
height: content-fit; /* previous: 76.8px */
text-align: right;
font-size: 1.6em;
}
And to fix bottom menu you need to add flexbox:
.bottomMenu {
font-size: 24px;
text-align: right;
display: flex; /* new */
flex-direction: row-reverse; /* new */
justify-content: space-between; /* new */
align-items: center; /* new */
}
For the button, you could try this:
button {
position: relative;
right: 400px;
bottom: 50px;
transform: scale(2,2)
}

javascript on a webpage displaying text wrongly

I have JS code on a webpage that loads questions in from mysql db and displays the text . What happens is that it cuts off words at the end of the line and continues the word on the next line at the start. So all text across the screen starts/ends at the same point.
This seems to be the code where it displays the text.
For example the text will look like at the end of a line 'cont' and then on next line at the start 'inue'.
How do i fix this?
var questions = <?=$questions;?>;
// Initialize variables
//------------------------------------------------------------------
var tags;
var tagsClass = '';
var liTagsid = [];
var correctAns = 0;
var isscorrect = 0;
var quizPage = 1;
var currentIndex = 0;
var currentQuestion = questions[currentIndex];
var prevousQuestion;
var previousIndex = 0;
var ulTag = document.getElementsByClassName('ulclass')[0];
var button = document.getElementById('submit');
var questionTitle = document.getElementById('question');
//save class name so it can be reused easily
//if I want to change it, I have to change it one place
var classHighlight = 'selected';
// Display Answers and hightlight selected item
//------------------------------------------------------------------
function showQuestions (){
document.body.scrollTop = 0; // For Safari
document.documentElement.scrollTop = 0; // For Chrome, Firefox, IE and Opera
if (currentIndex != 0) {
// create again submit button only for next pages
ulTag.innerHTML ='';
button.innerHTML = 'Submit';
button.className = 'submit';
button.id = 'submit';
if(quizPage<=questions.length){
//update the number of questions displayed
document.getElementById('quizNumber').innerHTML = quizPage;
}
}
//Display Results in the final page
if (currentIndex == (questions.length)) {

document.getElementById('question').innerHTML = '';
if(button.id == 'submit'){

newAns .appendChild(img1);

}
var addNewAnsHere = document.getElementById('options');
addNewAnsHere.appendChild(newAns);
}
//.click() will return the result of $('.notSelected')
var $liTags = $('.notSelected').click(function(list) {
list.preventDefault();
//run removeClass on every element
//if the elements are not static, you might want to rerun $('.notSelected')
//instead of the saved $litTags
$liTags.removeClass(classHighlight);
//add the class to the currently clicked element (this)
$(this).addClass(classHighlight);
//get id name of clicked answer
for (var i = 0; i < currentQuestion.options.length ; i++) {
// console.log(liTagsid[i]);
if($liTags[i].className == "notSelected listyle selected"){
//store information to check answer
tags = $liTags[i].id;
// tagsClass = $LiTags.className;
tagsClassName = $liTags[i];
}
}
});
//check answer once it has been submitted
button.onclick = function (){
if(button.id == 'submit'){
button.className = 'buttonload';
button.innerHTML = '<i class="fa fa-spinner fa-spin"></i>Loading';
}
setTimeout(function() { checkAnswer(); }, 100);
};
}
//self calling function
showQuestions();
The website is on my local now but i can upload a screenimage if need be and the whole code of the webpage. Or is the issue in html?
edit: here is html/css code

I'm guessing that #question{ word-break: break-all; } is probably the culprit then? –
CB..yes that fixed it:)

passing an element id to a function called inside a onclick on javascript

I have a created <li> which I have added an onclick function to it. The problem is that I call a function inside <th> onclick function and I'm trying to pass the <li> id to it.
The checkboxHours function doesn't seem to get the id tho.
function changeHours() {
document.getElementById("courtTimes").replaceChildren();
//Change hours
var sports = $('input[name="sports"]:checked').val()
courtChecked = $('input[name="sportCourts"]:checked').val()
dayChecked = $('input[name="daysRowItem"]:checked').val()
var listID = "";
for (const i in courtTimes[sports][courtChecked][dayChecked]) {
var hour = courtTimes[sports][courtChecked][dayChecked][i]
var listItem = document.createElement("li");
listID = "courtTimesItem" + i;
listItem.setAttribute = ("id", listID);
listItem.className = "courtTimesItem"
listItem.onclick = function() {
checkBoxHours(this.id)
};
listItem.innerHTML = '<label><input type="checkbox" class="hoursCheckbox" name="courtTimesItem"><div style="margin-top: 0.75vh">' + hour + ':00</div></label>';
document.getElementById("courtTimes").appendChild(listItem);
}
}
function checkBoxHours(ab) {
document.getElementById("monthTxt").innerHTML += ab; //check if works
}
#courtTimes {
display: flex;
flex-flow: column;
position: fixed;
margin-top: 25vh;
height: 47vh;
width: 100%;
overflow-x: hidden;
overflow-y: scroll;
white-space: nowrap;
-webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch;
float: top;
}
.courtTimesItem {
margin-top: 8vw;
width: 50vw;
height: 5vh;
margin-left: 17vw;
border: 1px solid black;
box-shadow: 1px 1px 1px rgb(112, 112, 112);
text-align: center;
font-family: 'Heebo-Regular';
padding-bottom: 1vh;
border-radius: 1.5vw;
background-color: white;
}
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<ul id="courtTimes"></ul>
You could try this:
var listItem = document.createElement("li");
listID = "courtTimesItem" + i;
listItem.setAttribute("id", listID);
listItem.onclick = function () {checkBoxHours(this.id)};
I assume you used setAttribute as string variable, not as function.

localStorage does not save/show items

I do my ToDo list. (I learn vanilla JS). And I have some problem with saving some items to localStorage. When I use Google chrome(F12), I see undefiend. Maybe, I do not save correctly to localStorage. I tried to change var task to array, but it does not help. Pleas, show me my mistakes. I know, my code must be rewritten, it is my first code on JS. P.s. in console (in stackOverflow) I have that error

When you add an element to the page, at a certain point you do this
task = document.createTextNode(addField);
Since task is a global variable (you declared it at the top), you're overshadowing it with the TextNode you're creating, so that when you then call toLocal and you do
forTask = task.innerHTML;
task has no innerHTML attribute, so it returns undefined.
Also, for some reason, you call toLocal again at the end of newElement. It's not the problem but it's something you may want to think about. I'm not sure it's what you want.
#TakayashiHarano gave a couple of hints to solve this, but I'm not sure what you want is just to have the latest element in the local storage. So I would re-write toLocal so that it takes a string (the text of the item) as input, writes it at the end of a JSON array (already populated with what was in the local storage previously), and puts the array back in local storage.
function toLocal(toAdd) {
let storage = localStorage.getItem('forLocal');
if (storage === null) {
storage = [];
} else {
storage = JSON.parse(storage);
}
storage.push(toAdd);
localStorage.setItem('forLocal', JSON.stringify(storage));
}
Then you should modify the part of the code that reads the local storage (the one at the end) to basically simulate adding a new item as you would do when creating a new task, but for each item in the parsed JSON coming from local storage.
To be fair, your code needs a good dose of rewriting to achieve this, so I'll just leave you with this as an exercise.
The following changes are needed.
1 - Set up two variables separably for the following task variable.
var task = document.querySelector("ul");
task = document.createTextNode(addField);
For example, "ulElement" for the first one, and "task" for the second one.
This is to prevent to override the previously defined value.
2 - Move the timing for obtaining the ul element and load localStorage.
function onReady() {
ulElement = document.querySelector("ul");
if(localStorage.getItem("forLocal")){
ulElement.innerHTML = localStorage.getItem("forLocal");
}
}
window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', onReady, true);
To ensure the element existence, document.querySelector() should be called after the DOMContentLoaded event fired.
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Window/DOMContentLoaded_event
3 - Delete toLocal(); in the end of the newElement() function.
As far as my testing code, there is no need this statement.

Issue with ToDO list app and list item length

I'm working on a Q/A bare bones todolist app and notice that when a list item that is really long is added to the list, it pushes the button out.
Is there a way I can make the LI element larger when the textnode hits the button margin instead of pushing the button out of the LI element. Below is a screenshot. I'll post my source code below, but maybe this is a question that is a quick fix?
My source code can be found here - Issue with floating buttons right of my to do list
A) If I understood you well, you can easily fix it with CSS-Grid:
li {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: 3fr 100px;
grid-template-areas: 'text button';
}
li > span {
grid-area: text;
}
li > button {
grid-area: button;
height: 30px;
}
https://jsfiddle.net/axqwhj29/
Play with the example linked above resizing the result area to check if that's what you are looking for.
B) Also, but I don't recommend you, if you really don't wanna change your li hight and you have a maximum text width (ex: 25 characters), you can clip parts of your message in a phone vertical view and if the user flips to horizontal show the whole text automatically.

Hope this help :)
Okay I have wrapped the text inside the li with span element and and added I add grid display to li and give every element inside the li a width and then I have added word-break: break-word; so the line will break when the text of the span reach the width limit and don't affect the delete button and I've deleted height from li so the li will grow with the lines on it
var addItemButton = document.getElementById('addItem')
var onEnter = document.getElementById('newNote')
//below event listener adds an item to the list on click
addItemButton.addEventListener('click', function() {
let item = document.getElementById('newNote').value
let node = document.createElement("li")
let span = document.createElement("span")
let textnode = document.createTextNode(item)
span.appendChild(textnode)
node.appendChild(span)
if (item) {
document.getElementById('list-body').appendChild(node)
}
let node2 = document.createElement('BUTTON')
let textnode2 = document.createTextNode('Delete')
node2.appendChild(textnode2)
node.appendChild(node2)
node2.addEventListener('click', function() {
node2.parentNode.parentNode.removeChild(node)
});
document.getElementById('newNote').value = ''
});
onEnter.addEventListener('keyup', function(event) {
if (event.keyCode === 13) {
// Cancel the default action, if needed
event.preventDefault();
// Trigger the button element with a click
addItemButton.click();
}
})
function applyButton() { //onload for dummy data or data from db
let getListObjects = document.querySelectorAll("li")
for (let i = 0; i < getListObjects.length; i++) {
let node2 = document.createElement('BUTTON')
let textnode2 = document.createTextNode('Delete')
node2.appendChild(textnode2)
getListObjects[i].appendChild(node2)
let y = getListObjects[i].querySelector('button')
y.addEventListener('click', function() {
y.parentNode.parentNode.removeChild(getListObjects[i])
});
