I'm trying to use the useEffect hook inside a controlled form component to inform the parent component whenever the form content is changed by user and return the DTO of the form content. Here is my current attempt

However, now the effect is ran on the first render, when the initial values are set during mount. How do I avoid that?
Here are the current logs of loading the page and subsequently editing both fields. I also wonder why I get that warning of missing dependency.

You can see this answer for an approach of how to ignore the initial render. This approach uses useRef to keep track of the first render.

As for the warning you were getting:
React Hook useEffect has a missing dependency: 'onChange'
The trailing array in a hook invocation (useEffect(() => {}, [foo]) list the dependencies of the hook. This means if you are using a variable within the scope of the hook that can change based on changes to the component (say a property of the component) it needs to be listed there.

If you are looking for something like componentDidUpdate() without going through componentDidMount(), you can write a hook like:

The first effect is the main one as if you were using it in your component. It will run, discover that isMounted isn't true and will just skip doing anything.
Then after the bottom useEffect is run, it will change the isMounted to true - thus when the component is forced into a re-render. It will allow the first useEffect to render normally.
It just makes a nice self-encapsulated re-usable hook. Obviously you can change the name, it's up to you.

You can use custom hook to run use effect after mount.

I don't understand why you need a useEffect here in the first place. Your form inputs should almost certainly be controlled input components where the current value of the form is provided as a prop and the form simply provides an onChange handler. The current values of the form should be stored in <App>, otherwise how ever will you get access to the value of the form from somewhere else in your application?

UseEffect runs on first render without being called using Context [duplicate]

According to the docs:
componentDidUpdate() is invoked immediately after updating occurs. This method is not called for the initial render.
We can use the new useEffect() hook to simulate componentDidUpdate(), but it seems like useEffect() is being ran after every render, even the first time. How do I get it to not run on initial render?
As you can see in the example below, componentDidUpdateFunction is printed during the initial render but componentDidUpdateClass was not printed during the initial render.

We can use the useRef hook to store any mutable value we like, so we could use that to keep track of if it's the first time the useEffect function is being run.
If we want the effect to run in the same phase that componentDidUpdate does, we can use useLayoutEffect instead.

I made a simple useFirstRender hook to handle cases like focussing a form input:

It starts out as true, then switches to false in the useEffect, which only runs once, and never again.

While this also works, it involves updating state which will cause your component to re-render. If all your component's useEffect calls (and also all of its children's) have a dependency array, this doesn't matter. But keep in mind that any useEffect without a dependency array (useEffect(() => {...}) will be run again.
Using and updating useRef will not cause any re-renders.

We need to return what comes back from effect(), because it might be a cleanup function. But we don't need to determine if it is or not. Just pass it on and let useEffect figure it out.
In an earlier version of this post I said resetting the ref (isMounted.current = false) wasn't necessary. But in React 18 it is, because components can remount with their previous state (thanks #Whatabrain).
I thought creating a custom hook would be overkill and I didn't want to muddle my component's readability by using the useLayoutEffect hook for something unrelated to layouts, so, in my case, I simply checked to see if the value of my stateful variable selectedItem that triggers the useEffect callback is its original value in order to determine if it's the initial render:

If you want to skip the first render, you can create a state "firstRenderDone" and set it to true in the useEffect with empty dependecy list (that works like a didMount). Then, in your other useEffect, you can check if the first render was already done before doing something.

All previous are good, but this can be achieved in a simplier way considering that the action in useEffect can be "skipped" placing an if condition(or any other ) that is basically not run first time, and still with the dependency.
For example I had the case of :
Load data from an API but my title has to be "Loading" till the date were not there, so I have an array, tours that is empty at beginning and show the text "Showing"
Have a component rendered with different information from those API.
The user can delete one by one those info, even all making the tour array empty again as the beginning but this time the API fetch is been already done
Once the tour list is empty by deleting then show another title.
so my "solution" was to create another useState to create a boolean value that change only after the data fetch making another condition in useEffect true in order to run another function that also depend on the tour length.

Wait for change of prop from parent component after changing it from a child in React

I have rewritten a Child class component in React to a functional component. Here is the simplified code example.
For sure, as so often, this is a simplified code and more things are done with the value in the parent component. That's why we have and need it there.

What I want to do is to log a properties value, but only if it got changed by clicking the button. So just using a useEffect does not work for me.
Before changing the child component to a functional component, the property had its new value before I was calling logValueFromProp(). Afterwards it doesn't. I guess that's cause of some timing, and I was just lucky that the property was updated before the function was called.
So the question is: How would you solve this situation? One solution I thought of was a state in the child component which I set when the button is clicked and in the useEffect I only call the function when the state is set and then reset the state. But that doesn't feel like the optimal solution to me...
Three possible solutions for you
Pass logValueFromProp the value directly — but in a comment you've explained that the value might be modified slightly by the parent component before being set on the child, which would make this not applicable.
Use a flag in a ref. But if the parent doesn't always change the prop, that would be unreliable.
Have the parent accept a callback in its handleChange.

If possible, I'd pass the value directly to logValueFromProp when you want to log it. That's the simple, direct solution:

You could use a ref to remember whether you want to log it when the component function is next called (which will presumably be after it changes):

Using a ref instead of a state member means that when you clear the flag, it doesn't cause a re-render. (Your component function is only called after handleClick because the parent changes the value prop.)
Beware that if the parent component doesn't change the value when you call prop.onChange, the ref flag will remain set and then your component will mistakenly log the next changed value even if it isn't from the button. For that reason, it might make sense to try to move the logging to the parent, which knows how it responds to onChange.

This answer is based upon the answer of T.J. Crowder (#2).
You can create a custom hook that accepts a callback and dependencies. And returns a function that will trigger a re-render (by using useState instead of useContext) calling the callback in the process.
I've enhanced his answer by allowing you to pass a dependency array which will be used to determine if the callback is called. If the dependency array is omitted, the callback is always called. When passed, the callback is only called if there was a change in the dependency array.
I went for the name useTrigger in the example below, but depending on preference you might like another name better. For example useChange.

Use custom hook inside a callback in React JS

I have this custom hook:

Now the problem is eslint warning that says:
React Hook useCallback has a missing dependency: 'navigateHandler'. Either include it or remove the dependency array
And when I include navigateHandler as a dependency into useCallback dependency array, eslint says:
e 'navigateHandler' function makes the dependencies of useCallback Hook (at line XXX) change on every render. To fix this, wrap the 'navigateHandler' definition into its own useCallback() Hook
I cant change navigateHandler function.
I'm not sure if another callback can solve my problem with best performance or not.

Update your custom hooks with useCallback:

React hooks: How to read & update state in hooks without infinite loops with react-hooks/exhaustive-deps rule

When state is in a hook it can become stale and leak memory:

The problem with that is that we will run into infinite loops in a typical scenario to fetch some data if we follow Facebook's advice to list all dependencies always, as well as ensure we don't have stale data or memory leaks (as the example showed above):

Since Facebook say we should list fetchRandomNumber as a dependency (react-hooks/exhaustive-deps ESLint rule) we have to use useCallback to maintain a reference, but it regenerates on every call since it both depends on state.number and also updates it.
This is a contrived example but I've run into this many times when fetching data. Is there a workaround for this or is Facebook wrong in this situation?
Use the functional form of the state setter:

Now you don't need data and page as your deps
You can also use a ref to run the effect only on mount :

fetchSomething is not a dependency here. You don't want to retrigger the effect, you only cause it once when the component mounts. Thats what useEffect(() => ..., []) is for.

Using React useEffect hook with rxjs mergeMap operator

I'm trying to implement a data stream that has to use inner observables, where I use one from mergeMap, concatMap etc.
e.g.:

it starts acting weird/unpredictable (e.g.: sometimes the text is updated in the middle of typing, sometimes it doesn't update at all).
Things I have noticed:
If the inner observable completes immediately/is a promise that
resolves immediately, it works fine.
If we print to console instead of useEffect, it works fine.
I believe this has to do something with the inner workings of useEffect and how it captures and notices outside changes, but cannot get it working.
Any help is much appreciated.

I had a similar task but the goal was to pipe and debounce the input test and execute ajax call.
The simple answer that you should init RxJS subject with arrow function in the react hook 'useState' in order to init subject once per init.
Then you should useEffect with empty array [] in order to create a pipe once on component init.
