I'm implementing a design where a "fade to black" mask is expected to appear on the left side of the input once the text content reachs the maximum visible width of the input box.
The image bellow illustrates better what I'm trying to acomplish:
I already implemented part of it, with the code below:
var input = document.querySelector('#input');
var container = document.querySelector('.myInput');
input.addEventListener('keydown', function(e) {
if (input.value.length > 12) {
container.classList.add('faded');
} else {
container.classList.remove('faded');
}
});
body {
background: #000;
}
.myInput {
position: relative;
}
.myInput input {
font-family: "Trim", "NOW G", "Oscine";
font-style: normal;
font-weight: 500;
font-size: 28px;
background: #000;
padding: 12px;
color: #fff;
box-sizing: border-box;
margin: 0 0 0 10px;
border: 1px solid #ccc;
width: 200px;
}
.faded::before {
display: block;
background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(left, black, rgba(0, 0, 0, 0));
width: 20px;
position: absolute;
content: "";
left: 15px;
top: 1px;
bottom: 1px;
}
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<div class="myInput">
<input id="input" placeholder="Search" />
</div>
My problem now is how to add this mask conditionally (that is, removing the hardcoded 12 chars length and the input hardcoded width) and also, how to create a responsible solution that will work with all widths and all text sizes.
Any ideas?
You can find if the input is overflown as
(input.offsetWidth < input.scrollWidth)
Also I'd recommend listening to input event instead of keydown to catch paste as well.
See the snippet below:
document.addEventListener('input', function(e) {
if (e.target.nodeName.toLowerCase() === 'input') {
var input = e.target;
var container = input.parentNode;
if (input.offsetWidth < input.scrollWidth) {
if (!container.classList.contains('faded')) {
container.classList.add('faded');
var cs = getComputedStyle(input);
container.querySelector('.shadow').style.left = [
'border-left-width', 'margin-left', 'padding-left'
].reduce(function(a, e) {
return a += parseInt(cs[e])
}, 0) + 'px';
}
} else {
container.classList.remove('faded');
}
}
});
body {
background: #000;
}
.myInput {
position: relative;
margin:1rem;
}
.myInput input {
font: normal 500 28px "Trim", "NOW G", "Oscine";
background: #000;
padding: 12px;
color: #fff;
box-sizing: border-box;
margin: 0 0 0 10px;
border: 1px solid #ccc;
width: 200px;
}
.faded .shadow {
position: absolute;
top: 1px;
bottom: 1px;
width: 20px;
background-image: linear-gradient(90deg, #000, rgba(0, 0, 0, 0));
}
#input2 {
margin-left: 20%;
padding-left: 3em;
}
<div class="myInput">
<input id="input" placeholder="Search" />
<span class="shadow"></span>
</div>
<div class="myInput">
<input id="input2" placeholder="Search" />
<span class="shadow"></span>
</div>

I am creating a settings portion on a website. I want the features chosen to be "saved" and kept when the page refreshes. I attempted this but it seems to just reset the form when I refresh the page. Another issue is when I click on the cancel button, the toggle buttons reset but the dropdown comes back blank instead of going back to the placeholder "select timezone". The issue most likely lies in my javascript code below. It's also throwing an error in stack overflow but works properly on my website (minus the issues described above). Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

here a working example.
The problems with your code were that you were using emailBtn.value and publicBtn.value instead of emailBtn.checked and publicBtn.checked (they are checkbox so in order to get the correct value you have to read che checked property) and you were not loading the saved values on document load (the function inside window.addEventListener("load", ...) in my example.
Hope this helps you.
I'm new to Stack Overflow. I hope that I'm doing this correctly. ❤
I'm working on an old Etch-a-Sketch JavaScript project from months ago and decided to rework the 'mobile' form of the project because I hadn't bothered to do so at the time. At first, I tried just moving the buttons to the top horizontally, but I didn't like any of the variations I tried. So I decided I'd be better off with a dropdown menu instead that would appear when the screen is 500px or smaller, replacing the buttons.
The dropdown menu is supposed to do exactly what the buttons do - when a certain mode is selected, that's the mode that the program is supposed to switch to. For example, when the "Party mode" button is clicked, the program switches to "party mode". I want the dropdown menu to behave similarly - when the "party mode" option is selected, the program should switch to "party mode".
My logic was that I needed a function that grabbed the value of the dropdown menu, and then an "if" condition would run that pretty much says "If the value is x, x mode should run; else if the value is y, y mode should run", and so on. I added the function to the existing window.onload function so it would run upon the window loading. This didn't work.
Note that the dropdown menu will, in the future, only appear when the screen size is 500px or less. In addition, I still have the buttons on the screen for all sizes, just for testing/debugging purposes. When I'm done and have this figured out, the buttons will have "display = 'none'" and be hidden for the "mobile size".
Anyway, so yeah, the program is still just listening to the buttons, and not the dropdown menu. That leads me to believe that I need to somehow turn "off" the button mode? If that's the case, how do I do that? If that's not the case, what am I supposed to do here? Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Luckily, there's an easy way to do that. Add this piece of code into your javascript file and see the magic.
const dropdown = document.getElementById('dropdown-mode');
dropdown.addEventListener('change', (e) => {
setCurrentMode(e.target.value);
});

I have created a custom slider. I want to make the position of the marker change as I drag the slider handle. However the gap between the marker and the handle is getting wider as the value gets bigger.
I think the problem is to do with using margin-left/left or absolute/relative positioning.
Can anyone help me to figure out if the concept of the position of mine is wrong?

Compensate for the thumb width
You forgot to compenstate for the size of the range slider thumb. The slider thumb can only travel the width of the slider minus the size of the thumb (so 300px minus ~18px). Because the thumb can only travel 282px, so should the label, or they will be out of sync.
Therefore this:
$('.h-rs-indicator').css('left', portion * $('.h-rs-line').width());
... should become this:
$('.h-rs-indicator').css('left', portion * ($('.h-rs-line').width() - 18));
... where 18 is the width of the range slider thumb in pixels.
$(function() {
$('.h-rs-line').on('input', function() {
var val = $(this).val();
var min = $(this).attr('min');
var max = $(this).attr('max');
var portion = (val - min) / (max - min);
$('.h-rs-indicator').text(val);
$('.h-rs-indicator').css('left', portion * ($('.h-rs-line').width() - 18));
});

Cross-browser
Getting your range slider to look the same (and being the same size) in every browser involves a lot of CSS. This is explained very well in this article on CSS tricks: https://css-tricks.com/styling-cross-browser-compatible-range-inputs-css/
Non-jQuery
How about a rewrite from jQuery to non-jQuery? That could be much lighter... Something like this:
<input type="range" min="0" max="100" oninput="updateRangeSlider(this)" onchange="updateRangeSlider(this)" />
With this function in the footer:
function updateRangeSlider(el){
var val = el.value;
var min = el.getAttribute('min');
var max = el.getAttribute('max');
var portion = (val - min) / (max - min);
var iel = el.parentNode.querySelector('.h-rs-indicator');
iel.innerHTML = val + '<span></span>';
iel.style.left = (portion * (el.offsetWidth-18)) + 'px';
}
Note that this function is reusable.
I hope you can help.

I am trying to create a one page website with 7 navigation links. See my fiddle below.
The first navigation link is located in the top left corner, for now its text called "home". The other 6 links are located underneath my "middle" div.
I am trying to achieve the following effect:
the home page is always displayed upon landing
the 6 links underneath the "middle" div should appear from either the left side of the screen or right side simply depending on this logic: 1st transition enter screen from right side, 2nd transition enter screen from left side, all subsequent transitions to alternate sides.
Each transition should push the existing content off the screen instead of overlapping it.
If the navigation links are explored in sequence from page 1 to page 6, each time a link is clicked the transition should alternate sides. In my current fiddle (although not working correctly) the pages 1 through 6 will all enter the screen from right hand side and if you navigate backwards from 6 to 1 they all enter the screen from the left. This is not what I am looking for. I want alternating sides regardless of which link is clicked except home link in top left.
when the home link is clicked when viewing another links content the transition should appear from top of the screen and push the existing content off the bottom of the screen. This transition should happen behind all the other divs ie. header and footer.
If anyone is able to help me I would really appreciate it as this has taken me quite some time and research.

Thanks
I suggest using .animate() I had the same idea and when I tried it it worked perfectly also if you want to have the old ones pushed off use a <ul> inside a div with overflow: hidden; then on the li's use display: inline; and list-style-type: none;
Here is a working fiddle
http://jsfiddle.net/X4URc/3/
Here's an example of how to get this working page1-page6:
#middle.page2_inside #page2_content {
margin-left: 50%;
margin-top: -16px;
}
#middle.page3_inside #page3_content {
margin-left: 66.66%; // margin-left is [(pageNum-1)/pageNum]*100% = 100% * 2/3
margin-top: -64px;
}
#middle.page4_inside #page4_content {
margin-left: 75%; // 100% * 3/4
margin-top: -112px;
}
#middle.page5_inside #page5_content {
margin-left: 80%; // 100% * 4/5
margin-top: -160px;
}
#middle.page6_inside #page6_content {
margin-left: 83.33%; // 100% * 5/6
margin-top: -208px;
}
