I just got a project that someone else has been working on. When I copied it I have to copy the node_modules folder or it doesn't work. Is there a way to have the package.json be updated based on whats in the node_modules directory?
These two steps are backwards. node_modules/ should not be checked into Git or shared from one computer to another. It's just a representation of what's in package.json. That file, not the directory, is the source of truth for your JavaScript dependencies. If that's not the case on your project, you'll have to fix that first to do any work on it.
First, remove node_modules:
$ rm -rf node_modules
Or, per rcdmk's answer, rename it so you have a reference of what was there:
$ mv node_modules node_modules_backup
Then, recreate it from package.json with your CLI tool of choice:
$ npm install # npm
$ yarn install # yarn
Finally, work through any issues in the code caused by the new dependencies. These will show as errors up in your server log, browser console, or build output. If you created a node_modules_backup, compare the subdirectories there to your new node_modules to see what's missing.
As others pointed out, the issue is already there and one way of dealing with it is to rename the node_modules folder, run npm install or yarn install and then try executing the application and figuring out the missing dependencies.
You can have an easier picture of what is missing if you run a tree command in the old node_modules and compare to a tree command output from the new one. You wouldn't need to add all differences, just the top level ones.
Instead of tree you can ls -1 (or dir /d /b if on Windows).
In npm it's package.json that generates node_modules, not the other way around. You should get the package.json with all the dependencies and run npm install

Steps I have done:
Cloned project from github.
Ran command 'yarn' to start project.
After running command 'yarn start' then this error comes.
after doing steps given in error, shows same error again

"babel-loader": "8.1.0"
Don't try to install it manually: your package manager does it automatically.
However, a different version of babel-loader was detected higher up in the tree:
C:\Users\Prathmesh Pawar\node_modules\babel-loader (version: 8.2.5)
Manually installing incompatible versions is known to cause hard-to-debug issues.
If you would prefer to ignore this check, add SKIP_PREFLIGHT_CHECK=true to an .env file in your project.
That will permanently disable this message but you might encounter other issues.
To fix the dependency tree, try following the steps below in the exact order:
1. Delete package-lock.json (not package.json!) and/or yarn.lock in your project folder.
2. Delete node_modules in your project folder.
3. Remove "babel-loader" from dependencies and/or devDependencies in the package.json file in your project folder.
4. Run npm install or yarn, depending on the package manager you use.
In most cases, this should be enough to fix the problem.
If this has not helped, there are a few other things you can try:
5. If you used npm, install yarn (http://yarnpkg.com/) and repeat the above steps with it instead.
This may help because npm has known issues with package hoisting which may get resolved in future versions.
6. Check if C:\Users\Prathmesh Pawar\node_modules\babel-loader is outside your project directory.
For example, you might have accidentally installed something in your home folder.
7. Try running npm ls babel-loader in your project folder.
This will tell you which other package (apart from the expected react-scripts) installed babel-loader.
If nothing else helps, add SKIP_PREFLIGHT_CHECK=true to an .env file in your project.
That would permanently disable this preflight check in case you want to proceed anyway.

I had some issues with a current iOS React Native project that i spent a long time working on. I've decided to start afresh. However i did spend a lot of time ensuring i got the correct versions of various react native modules and configuring these to work. These sit in my old 'node_modules' folder.
Can i copy these modules/folders (from the old 'node_modules') over to my new project? Do i need to update 'package.json' or link using 'react-native link xxxxx'? It it as simple as that in theory?
You don't need to copy over your node_modules directory. You can if you'd like, but it is not considered best practice. In any case, you shouldn't make any modifications to the files inside node_modules.
Preferably you need to only copy over your package.json file and optionally, your package-lock.json (or yarn.lock if you're using Yarn) file so that your project will be easily installable and upgradeable on other computers.
When you have a package.json or package-lock.json file, you can run npm install (or yarn install) to install the packages to your node_modules directory.
Copying your package-lock.json file over as well would ensure that the exact same versions of all of the packages that you have installed in your previous project will be installed in the new project as well. See this for more information on the package-lock.json file.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about react-native and linking react-native dependencies, but from this answer it seems that you would have to link any dependencies that contain native code again after you've run npm install.
No, I wouldn't recommend you to copy specific module from node_modules folder as once installed it has entries in .bin folder and files which you will miss while copying and it will be of no help in new project as they will be downloaded and installed again due to missing indexes.
Solutions :
You can use same package.json and package-lock in another project if you are sure that the dependencies version in it are exactly compatible or one you want, and install those dependencies in new project. The package-lock.json will ensure the version you choose.
Yes you can copy whole node_modules (have done it multiple times) from one project to another and use same package.json and package-lock (Will only save time in dependencies installation/download)
As you are starting fresh what i will recommend is create a new package.json and copy only those dependencies which are important for the project initialization, and as you progress add specific dependencies you need while developing. This will save you from huge garbage of unused dependencies which are hard to keep track of once the project inflates.
Maybe you can move it but you can't copy it, at least not with a naive cp -r! The node_modules/.bin directory ought to be full of symlinks to scripts in their respective directories in node_moudles, but after a cp -r these will be copies, which will now resolve relative module paths incorrectly.
For example, npm install typescript installs a executable script with the contents
#!/usr/bin/env node
require('../lib/tsc.js')
in two locations. Before a copy, that looks like this:
$ ls -l node_modules/.bin/tsc node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc
-rwxr-xr-x 45 node_modules/.bin/tsc
-rwxr-xr-x 45 node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc
and after a cp -r copy, like this:
$ ls -l node_modules/.bin/tsc node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc
lrwxr-xr-x 21 node_modules/.bin/tsc -> ../typescript/bin/tsc
-rwxr-xr-x 45 node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc
which makes the ../typescript/bin/tsc no longer exist, resulting in
$ tsc -b
...
Error: Cannot find module '../lib/tsc.js'
...
I am new to node.js and Github. I was trying to save some work by using command git add -A and the then I saw these lines below and some many of the lines are just running non-stop. I typed ctrl+c to stop it, but anyone knows what are just happened or what did I do wrong??

Thanks #bcorbella for the answer. Just a small precision to be sure you won't do this as a beginner but never add the node_modules into your git project. Create a .gitignore file with at least:
node_modules
Use npm init, npm install <module> --save to create a package.json... then do simply a npm install when you are checking your project.

try setting the config core.eol to native and see if you will get the same error, i see no reason why you should be tracking the node_modules/ folder.

I have a package (package-a) that depends on another package (package-b) which is not published to npm but is on my file system. When I run npm install from package-a, package-b's dependencies are not installed. I have to navigate to package-b's directory and run npm install manually. Is there a way to install both packages' dependencies with a single npm command?
Here's my directory structure:
/
...
shared/
...
javascript/
...
package-b/
package.json
package-a/
package.json
Per the docs, I placed the following in package-a/package.json. (I'm using npm 5+)
dependencies: {
package-b: "file:../shared/javascript/package-b",
}
When I navigate to /package-a and run npm install, it installs all of package-a's dependencies like normal and also copies the package-b directory to package-a/node_modules. This is presumably what lets me type require('package-b') instead of require('../shared/javascript/package-b') .
However, as I stated before, package-bs dependencies are not installed, so if I try to use package-a, I get an error when package-b is required because it is trying to use dependencies that do not exist locally.
Once again, to solve this, I can navigate to package-b and run npm-install, but I'm hoping there's a better solution as I may have many such sub packages and I'd like to avoid having to write a shell script to go install all my dependencies if I can do this with an npm command. (perhaps I just did something wrong and npm install should be working?)
Follow up question: when I run npm install from package-b's directory, the packages are installed there, but not in the version of package-b that got copied to /package-a/node_modules during the first npm install, yet everything still works. So now it seems like when I require('package-b') it is actually resolving to /shared/javascript/package-b and NOT /package-a/node_modules/package-b. So what's the point of copying the file in the first place?

It turns out this is a bug in npm 5. It only occurrs when installing from a package-lock.json file. (Github Issue)
The files are (probably) not being copied, they're being symbolically linked (symlink). This essentially creates an alias/shortcut that looks like a real directory, but points to another path.
This is how the older npm link feature worked. The reason is the code stays "live"; Changes in the linked module are reflected whenever you run the module that's referencing them, meaning you don't have to npm update all the time.
