Send AJAX request on each loop iteration after each AJAX success respond - javascript

I have an array of ids, and I need to send each id with separate AJAX request. But each next id in the array needs to be sent only after AJAX received a success response from the server for the previuse request.

Just make your ajax sychronous and check with a variable if the call has succeeded. EDIT: Forgot it was an .each so break wont work. Just use return.

To chain all the ajax request without locking the browser with synchronous requests you can use promises.
In the example below I use Array.reduce() to digest the list one by one and get the reference of the previous promise. $.when() is used to create the first resolved promise to kick things off. asyncAction() is used to mirror an async operation.

You can replace asyncAction() with your ajax call, just make sure to resolve the promise calling deferred.resolve() within your ajax success callback. Do note that any failing ajax request will break the chain.

Wait until three ajax calls have resolved to fire function (defer?)

I need to wait until three ajax calls have completed until another function should begin. I've tried using the jquery deferred promise https://api.jquery.com/deferred.promise/ but my jobs are returned before the deferred data is loaded. I need to force these three ajax calls to complete before firing the function. I'm not tied down to using deferred, that just seemed like the logical way to go.
I am using datatables and need the ajax calls to complete before data is loaded into them.

The .when eventually fires, that's not the problem, the problem is that the .when is returning nothing for the data because the Ajax calls haven't been completed. Essentially, we need the .when to stop executing all js until the promise has been resolved.
Sorry for the long code, I just want to be complete and wanted to note that I have three separate Ajax calls. Thanks for your thoughts.
You can use $.when and pass all the ajax calls that you need to wait.
Example:

You need to initialize your datatable using JavaScript-sourced data (see data option) AFTER your Ajax calls are complete instead of using Ajax-sourced data directly with ajax option.

Using JSON data retrieved via AJAX in separate function

Apologies if this is a duplicate question, I've followed some steps from another question which didn't seem to help me. I am trying to retrieve some JSON data, store part of the data into a variable and use that variable in a separate function outside of the AJAX request.
My expected response from the json data is http://localhost:8000/tutorials/retrieve/?page=2 (This response shows if I log the variable inside of the AJAX code) however the actual response I get when I try to log the variable from another function is as follows:

When I click .recentTutorials I expect the console to log the data from JSON however it doesn't. Can someone help clear up my error(s)?
The reason that it doesn't log the data from JSON s that the call is asynchronous. This means that the function will execute top to bottom without waiting for the call to finish.
One method that's used is to leverage deferred objects which return a promise on completion. You can accept an anonymous function to the invoker function so that it's call back is executed within the scope of the click.
Observe:

It seems to me that you are trying to log the data before the ajax is completed. It`s better to use deferreds . Try this:

The parameter in your click handler is the last and final nail in your coffin. It's always the jquery event and you shouldn't handle it at all.
You do need to call the retrieveTutorials() function within the handler and you need to pass it a callback function that will be executed on success. So your retrieveTutorials() function will look something like this:

Placing an ajax json object into a javascript variable

I've been trying to figure this one out since my earlier question.
I can receive the data, as I see it under resources using Develop > Show Web Inspector on safari. But I can't seem to assign it successfully to a variable to use later on.

I know that the issue lies with ajax calls being asynchronous, but I can't figure out how to write the callback such that I can get the json data into a variable to use later in via a different function.
Don't set async: false, as this will block the browser whilst your Ajax request is processed.
Instead, you can use promises, or call a further function from within your success callback.

I don't think $.ajax actually returns anything - but I could be wrong. Either way, that's not too important, because you shouldn't rely on the results of an ajax call being available immediately. Your alert statement is firing before the Ajax request is finished - it sounds like you know that already.
When leveraging asynchronous calls (ajax), its a best practice to have any logic that relies on the data returned from the call to be done in (or triggered by) a callback (or as #Jack Zelig mentions, promises). This is what success parameter of $.ajax is all about. It will get called once the request completes successfully. You can also define complete and error callbacks - which fire once the request is complete (regardless of status) and once the request fails respectively.
So to summarize, your best option is probably this:

How do I make a function wait until all jQuery Ajax requests are done inside another function?
In short, I need to wait for all Ajax requests to be done before I execute the next. But how?
jQuery now defines a when function for this purpose.
It accepts any number of Deferred objects as arguments, and executes a function when all of them resolve.
That means, if you want to initiate (for example) four ajax requests, then perform an action when they are done, you could do something like this:

In my opinion, it makes for a clean and clear syntax, and avoids involving any global variables such as ajaxStart and ajaxStop, which could have unwanted side effects as your page develops.
If you don't know in advance how many ajax arguments you need to wait for (i.e. you want to use a variable number of arguments), it can still be done but is just a little bit trickier. See Pass in an array of Deferreds to $.when() (and maybe jQuery .when troubleshooting with variable number of arguments).
If you need deeper control over the failure modes of the ajax scripts etc., you can save the object returned by .when() - it's a jQuery Promise object encompassing all of the original ajax queries. You can call .then() or .fail() on it to add detailed success/failure handlers.
If you want to know when all ajax requests are finished in your document, no matter how many of them exists, just use $.ajaxStop event this way:

In this case, neither you need to guess how many requests are happening in the application, that might finish in the future, nor dig into functions complex logic or find which functions are doing HTTP(S) requests.
$.ajaxStop here can also be bound to any HTML node that you

If you want to stick with ES syntax, then you can use Promise.all for known ajax methods:

For example, let's say you have a loading ... message while fetching 100 ajax requests and you want to hide that message once loaded.

jQuery allows you to specify if you want the ajax request to be asynchronous or not. You can simply make the ajax requests synchronous and then the rest of the code won't execute until they return.

Also you could use async.js.
I think its better than $.when because you can merge all kinds of asynchronous call that does not support promises out of the box like timeouts, SqlLite calls etc. and not just ajax requests.
On the basis of #BBonifield answer, I wrote a utility function so that semaphore logic is not spread in all the ajax calls.
untilAjax is the utility function which invokes a callback function when all the ajaxCalls are completed.

I highly recommend using $.when() if you're starting from scratch.
Even though this question has over million answers, I still didn't find anything useful for my case. Let's say you have to deal with an existing codebase, already making some ajax calls and don't want to introduce the complexity of promises and/or redo the whole thing.
We can easily take advantage of jQuery .data, .on and .trigger functions which have been a part of jQuery since forever.

Save response from jQuery ajax function

I've got a custom function, which calls ajax request and I'm able to save response data to variable and return it. 0 is always returned, but alert shows e.g. 3712.
Here is the function:

because ajax is asynchronous, when return $ret; is executed, the response is not ready yet, so its initial value 0 is returned.
you have to do what you want to do in the success callback function rather than return.
This will return ZERO because of the asynchronous call. Rather I would suggest you to pass a callback method to work with the response.

Because "A" in Ajax stands for Asynchronous, return $ret; is executed before the Ajax call finds it's way back to success function.
Rather than trying to return the value, try to call a function within the ajax success block.
