Show/Hide a component in React using state - javascript

I'm trying to hide / show a component while checking a state value :

I don't know where's the bug / wrong code, but the render doesn't seems to refresh.

You are using it incorrectly. You have to init the state like this
constructor(props) {
super(props);
this.state = {show: true}
}
and render it like this

You can't declare this.state as a variable, that should return an error on compile. As Murat said.
State in react is a JS object and is declared as such:
this.state = { ... }
In order to mutate (change) the state, you can't do it directly in react or else react will not know it has changed. If you were to say declare your state as:
this.state = {show: true}
and then wanted to change the boolean to false, you couldn't do it by simply doing this.state.show = false. React wouldn't know that the change had happened, that is why you need to use a react method called setState(). As Murat said you will change the state by using the following onClick metod: onClick={() => this.setState({show:false})}.

In a a React component, this.state is expected to be an object representing the state of your component.
1) this.state must be initialized (either in the constructor or in the class body)
example in the constructor:

Note that you musn't set state directly but rather use the setState method, the signature of setState that I used is the updater form, look into react documentation for explaination on this.

react - state undefined when passing child state through parent

I'm trying to learn react and ran into a snag. I'm struggling to update the parent based on the child state. I've managed to pass the child state to the parent by binding the child's state to the same child's prop when invoked by the parent.

The console keeps rendering undefined, meaning newState doesn't contain the boolean value true / false. Would appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction.

this.updateState() doesn't return anything. So nothing is sent to this.props.changeState.
Probably the simplest approach is to remove this.props.changeState from the JSX markup and move it into updateState. Then within updateState define the new state object, update the component's state with it, and pass it to the prop function. Something like this:

Then in the JSX just call updateState (putting less logic inline in the JSX and more in the functions):

As an aside, while the example shown is clearly a contrived one, tracking the same state in two different places is probably the wrong design. If the parent just needs updates, pass it just the updates that it needs. But if the parent is tracking the state, the child doesn't need to duplicate that effort. You can remove state from the child entirely and just pass it the values it needs, simplifying the whole thing.

React - Ajax data not being passed into Child Component

I have two components, one parent one child. I am using the fetch method in componentDidMount() callback. Once I do this, I set the state with key items to that data that is pulled from the api. Once I do this it should be able to be console logged in the child component as a prop. However this is not working. What am I doing wrong here?

First, fetch is asynchronous. So, the fetch statement might be pending by the time you try to console.log the result inside the child constructor.
Putting the console.log inside the render method would work, because the component will be rerendered, if the state items changes.
The constructor for a component only runs one time during a lifecycle. When it does, props.items is undefined because your ajax request is in-flight, so console.log(props.items) doesn't show anything.
If you change your constructor to console.log("constructed");, you'll see one-time output (stack snippets may not show this--look in your browser console). Henceforth, componentDidUpdate() can be used to see the new props that were set when your ajax request finishes.
You could also log the props inside the render method, which will run once before the ajax request resolves and again afterwards when props.items changes.
As a side point, you have <Map list=... but the component tries to render this.props.name, which is undefined.
Also, if you aren't doing anything in the constructor (initializing state or binding functions) as here, you don't need it.

The only problem you have is that you are trying to use this.props.name and your Map component props are called list and items, so it will return undefined.
If you log your props in the constructor you will get the initial state of Main because the fetch hasn't returned anything yet. Remember that the constructor only runs once. So you are probably getting an empty array when you log props.items in the constructor because that's what you have in your initial state.

If you don't want to show the component until the data is fetched you can include a boolean property in your state that you set to true once you the fetch returns a response and pass it as a prop to your component. Your component can you use that variable to show, for example, a spinner while you are fetching the data. Here's an example:

Why your code is not working
SimpleTable has to be rendered, so you need to place it inside the render method. Anything that needs to be rendered inside your component has to be placed there
On Click can just contain SimpleTable, it should be used to change the value of the state variable that controls if or not your component will be shown. How do you expect this to work, you are not rendering the table.
Below is how your code should look like to accomplish what you want :

You can also add a hideUserList method for some other click.
Or even better a toggleUserList

If you're referring to the method userList then it appears that you're assuming there is an implicit return value. Because you're using curly braces you need to explicitly return from the function meaning:

The problem lies with how you are trying to display the SimpleTable component. You are using it inside the userList function, but this is incorrect. Only use React elements inside the render method.
What you can do instead is use a state, to toggle the display of the component. Like this:

The functionality you are looking for is called Conditional Rendering. The onClick prop function is an event handler and events in react may be used to change the state of a component. That state then may be used to render the components. In normal vanilla javascript or jQuery we call a function and modify the actual DOM to manipulate the UI. But React works with a virtual DOM. You can achieve the functionality you are looking for as follows:

Setting state in render by using this.state

I've recently seen this type of react pattern where the state is being set in a render by using this.state:

This seems like an anti-pattern. Can this cause bugs? It seems to work properly though.

render should always be pure without any side effects, so it's certainly a bad practice.
from the React docs :
The render() function should be pure, meaning that it does not modify component state, it returns the same result each time it’s invoked, and it does not directly interact with the browser. If you need to interact with the browser, perform your work in componentDidMount() or the other lifecycle methods instead. Keeping render() pure makes components easier to think about.

From the docs: getDerivedStateFromProps is invoked after a component is instantiated as well as when it receives new props. It should return an object to update state, or null to indicate that the new props do not require any state updates.

It is incorrect setting state in render method. You can set state in lifecyles method. But other thing is that your component can receive same props many times, so your component will be set state many times, and renderd. To solve this problem you need to compare your new with your current props for example compare json objects:

Initialize state with dynamic key based on props in reactJS

How to initialize state with dynamic key based on props? The props is a data fetched from external source (async). So the props will change when the data is succesfully downloaded. Consider a component like this.
edit: I want to make the state dynamic because I want to generate a dialog (pop up) based on the item that is clicked. the DialogContainer is basically that. visible prop will make that dialog visible, while onHide prop will hide that dialog. I use react-md library.

The data then is shared via Redux.
However, based on my understanding so far, state can be updated based on props with componentWillReceiveProps or the new getDerivedStateFromProps (not on the constructor as above). But, how to do that on either method?
The example here only explains when the state is initialized on the constructor, and call setState on either cWRP or gDSFP. But, I want the key value pair to be initialized dynamically.
Any help/hint will be greatly appreciated. Please do tell if my question is not clear enough.

If you do this, <div>{item}</div> will change as you change the data state. The idea is to just map the redux state to your class props - you don't have to map the props back to the state. The render() automatically listens to changes in props supplied by redux. However, if you do want to somehow know redux state change in events, you can add the following functions.
