How to DRY http success and error functions? - javascript

Say I have more than 100 requests in my application. It would be cumbersome and time consuming to write as many success and error functions to handle response.
At the moment I do like this:

As you see, it is a lot of work to write so many callback functions for 100+ requests. I wonder if it is possible to avoid doing so.

In the NameController, I used ctrl.names = HttpService.getNames(). But ctrl.names is undefined. How to use the HttpService.getNames() in NameController?

A few people has commented to resolve the promise.

It works. However, I still write 100+ functions to resolve the promise.
How to avoid repeating the success and error functions or if possible the whole then() method?

I will try to sum up the discussion and some ways you can remove duplication:
First of all, your second approach is the right direction to re-using a function in your controllers.
A classical approach would be this:

Note that you can even extract this more if all your calls are following the same format, for example you could:

Alternatively, if you can use ES2017 in your project (e.g. your code is transpiled) you can simplify using some of the new features without the need of an additional function:

Finally, you might actually want to parameterize your request so that you have just one:

Cannot read property 'then' of undefined with nested function calls

The code below is contrived. I'm simplified things as best I could to ask the question.
I have a simple angular service that makes an API call and returns results:

As with most things, the problem was a coding error in my actual service code. The code I've presented in this question would work as expected. I appreciate the couple of folks who offered suggestions of ways to identify the issue. Here was my issue:
My actual "intermediate" function had this structure:

As you can see, the return is actually just exiting the forEach and never actually being returned from the mediumRequest function. Hence the error.

Chaining Multiple Optional Async Ajax Requests

I'm using Angular 1.5.8. The views in my app require different combinations of the same 3 ajax requests. Some views require data from all three, others require data from two, or even one single endpoint.
I'm working on a function that will manage the retrieval of this data, requiring the app to only call each endpoint once. I want the ajax requests to be called as needed, but only when needed. Currently I've created a function which works, but seems like it could use improvement.
The following function is contained within the $rootScope. It uses the fetchData() function to cycle through the get requests as requested. When data is retrieved, it is stored in the global variable $rootScope.appData and then fetchData() is called again. When all data is retrieved the deferred promise is resolved and the data is returned to the controller.

An object fetch is submitted as an attribute, this object shows which ajax requests to call. An example call to the $rootScope.loadAppData() where only user and pricing data would be requested would look like this:

I'm wondering:
Should the chaining of these functions be done differently? Is the fetchData() function sufficient, or is this an odd way to execute this functionality?
Is there a way to call all needed Ajax requests simultaneously, but wait for all required calls to complete before resolving the promise?
Is it unusual to store data like this in the $rootScope?
I'm aware that this function is not currently handling errors properly. This is functionality I will add before using this snippet, but isn't relevant to my question.
Instead of using the .success method, use the .then method and return data to its success handler:

The above example creates a promise for an empty object. It then chains three operations. Each operations checks to see if a fetch is necessary. If needed a fetch is executed and the result is attached to the appData object; if no fetch is needed the appData object is passed to the next operation in the chain.
USAGE:

If any of the fetch operations fail, subsequent operations in the chain will be skipped and the final reject handler will be called.
Because calling the .then method of a promise returns a new derived promise, it is easily possible to create a chain of promises. It is possible to create chains of any length and since a promise can be resolved with another promise (which will defer its resolution further), it is possible to pause/defer resolution of the promises at any point in the chain. Found a good way to answer question 2 in the original post. Using $q.all() allows the promises to execute simultaneously, resolving once they all complete, or failing as soon as one of them fails. I've added this logic into a service thanks to #georgeawg. Here's my re-write putting this code into a service, and running all calls at the same time:

How can I return data from `$http` with a $q resolve?

I have a javascript function which for this question I have simplified. It actually does some things to the data retrieved from the $http call and then I want that data to be made available along with a promise to the function that called it:

$http.get().then(...) is itself a promise that can be further used by the calling code.
Perhaps it's a matter of personal preference, but I use the $q.defer() technique to "promisify" a synchronous function. In case of something that's already asynchronous, i.e, already a promise, like $http and $timeout, I set a success handler using the then function, modify the result as necessary and return the object as a promise using $q.when()

I think it's because of the missing } in the code that's why data doesn't have any value in the getTopics function.

Implementing a fallback using promises

it is a common pattern that we cascade across a list of sources of data with the first success breaking the chain like this:

et cetera. if the getDataN() functions are asynchronous, however, it leads us to 'callback hell':

where the second .then actually refers to the return value of the first .fail, which is itself a promise, and which I understood was chained in as the input to the succeeding chain step.
clearly I'm wrong but what is the correct way to write this?
In most promise libs, you could chain .fail() or .catch() as in #mido22's answer, but jQuery's .fail() doesn't "handle" an error as such. It is guaranteed always to pass on the input promise (with unaltered state), which would not allow the required "break" of the cascade if/when success happens.
The only jQuery Promise method that can return a promise with a different state (or different value/reason) is .then().
Therefore you could write a chain which continues on error by specifying the next step as a then's error handler at each stage.

As a beginner, stumbling across the same problem, I just realized how much simpler this has become with async and await:
The synchronous pattern

can now easily be applied to asynchronous code:

Just remember to add an async to the function that this code is used in.

Managing promise dependencies

I'm using Node.js and Bluebird to create some fairly complicated logic involving uncompressing a structured file, parsing JSON, creating and making changes to several MongoDB documents, and writing related files in multiple locations. I also have fairly complicated error handling for all of this depending on the state of the system when an error occurs.
I am having difficulty thinking of a good way to manage dependencies through the flow of promises.
My existing code basically looks like this:

Note that dependency1 isn't needed until promise3, and that the error handler needs to know about the dependencies.
To me this seems like spaghetti code (and my actual code is far worse with a lot of parallel control flow). I've also read that returning another promise inside of a .then callback is an antipattern. Is there a better/cleaner way of accomplishing what I'm trying to do?
I find both answers currently provided nice but clumsy. They're both good but contain overhead I don't think you need to have. If you instead use promises as proxies you get a lot of things for free.

Please do not use successFunction and such it is an anti-pattern and loses information.
If you feel like you have to use successFunction you can write:

However, it is infinitely worse since it won't let the consumer handle errors they may be able to handle.

The use of allResolved is only because of your callback specifics, if you had a more general error handler, you could simply resolve using Promise.all directly, or even:

It is certainly not an antipattern to return promises within thens, flattening nested promises is a feature of the promise spec.
Here's a possible rewrite, though I'm not sure it's cleaner:

Really, I feel like there's not much you can do to clean this up. Event with vanilla try/catches, the best possible pattern is pretty similar to these.
