Assign child element to variable for click function - javascript

I have a WordPress generated menu that has this structure:
<li id="menu-item-407" class="smoothAboutScroll menu-item menu-item-type-custom menu-item-object-custom menu-item-407">
About Us
</li>
I want to target the <a> child and store it in a variable, so then I can create a onclick function that runs when the <a> element is clicked on.
This is what I have:
var aboutLink = $('#menu-item-407').children();
$('aboutLink').on('click', function() {
// run function
})

$('aboutLink') is looking for a <aboutLink></aboutLink> element that doesn't exist.
That selector string has nothing to do with the variable aboutLink which is now a jQuery object itself
Try
var aboutLink = $('#menu-item-407 > a');
aboutLink.on('click', function() {
// run function
})

Give the <a> element an id and then target it using jquery?
var myElement = $('#myLinkId');

Getting the whole content of a clicked <li> element

This is my HTML line:
<li onclick="return open_create_event_screen();">10</li>
I want to get the content of this < li > element (which is '10') through the JavaScript function (open_create_event_screen()) that opens once the < li > element is clicked.
Is it possible to do so?
Old way, where we put inline events into our HTML. The key is to pass this into the function, which is a reference to the element that was acted upon, you could also pass event, and determine the clicked element from the target property (two different approaches).
const open_create_event_screen = (obj) => {
console.log("opening create event screen");
console.log(obj.innerText);
}
<li onclick="open_create_event_screen(this);">10</li>
Here's a more modern approach, where our html is cleaner, and we do the work of assigning the event handlers in javascript.
const open_create_event_screen = (obj) => {
console.log("opening create event screen");
console.log(obj.innerText);
}
const lis = document.querySelectorAll(".eventThing>li");
lis.forEach(li =>
li.addEventListener("click", () => open_create_event_screen(li))
);
<ul class="eventThing">
<li>10</li>
<li>20</li>
</ul>

jquery custom function call not working

I'm new to jquery, ajax and jstree. I'm using jstree to have my <ul> elements look like a tree structure.
I have the <ul> under a div tag of id = "container". When I execute the html file, the div (id = "container") is passed to jstree function as follows:
$(function() {
$('#container').jstree();
});
My html snippet is as follows:
<div id="container">
<ul id = "treeNodes">
<li>Parent
<ul>
<li>Child1
<ul>
<li>child2-1</li>
<li>child2-2</li>
<li>child2-3</li>
<li>child2-4</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
The tree structure is being displayed fine.
I'm trying to write a jquery function that gets the li element's name as an argument.
For example: when I click Parent, the function should recieve "Parent" as an argument or when I click child2-3, the function should get "child2-3" as the argument.
I attempted to create that function, but it doesn't seem to work. Here's my attempt -
$("#treeNodes li").click(function() {
console.log("hello");
console.log(this.innerHTML);
});
The control seems to go to the function calling the jstree(), but the other function doesn't seem to work.
Any help or tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Making your structure into a JSTree causes new HTML to be created and those new elements have custom classes and new APIs. So, you have to read the documentation to understand how to use the new structure.
If you look at this documentation page, you'll see an example of what you are after, which hinges on a custom changed event. I've reproduced that example, customizing it for your HTML and console output.
$(function() {
$('#container')
// listen for the custom "changed" event on any jstree
.on('changed.jstree', function (e, data) {
// When you click on a JSTree the event appears to fire on the entire tree
// You'll have to iterate the tree nodes for the selected one.
var i, j, r = [];
for(i = 0, j = data.selected.length; i < j; i++) {
r.push(data.instance.get_node(data.selected[i]).text);
}
console.clear();
console.log('Selected: ' + r.join(', '));
})
// create the instance
.jstree();
});
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jstree/3.2.1/themes/default/style.min.css" />
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jstree/3.3.5/jstree.min.js"></script>
<div id="container">
<ul id = "treeNodes">
<li>Parent
<ul>
<li>Child1
<ul>
<li>child2-1</li>
<li>child2-2</li>
<li>child2-3</li>
<li>child2-4</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
I have read the documentation from the jstree page: https://www.jstree.com/
There is a class from the jstree called jstree-children, from that class you can obtain the value from the list, like this:
$(document).on('click', '.jstree-children ul li', function (e) {
console.log($(this).html());
});
Try this: https://jsfiddle.net/Mantixd/0jwpz2r1/

Get Values of sub elements of clicked class using jquery

I have a class amt and when that class is clicked I want to get the values of the clicked <h6>, <span> and <label> tags.
How do I do this in jquery? I have already seen a question here Get value of List Item with jQuery but it uses same under tag but i have to get different elemet value under same tag
<li class="amt" id="diecut_am1">
<h6>50</h6>
<span>$59.00</span>
<label>$51.30</label>
</li>
<li class="amt" id="diecut_am2">
<h6>100</h6>
<span>$68.00</span>
<label>$61.20</label>
</li>
Try this
$(".amt").click(function() {
var elem1 = $(this).find("h6").html();
var elem2 = $(this).find("span").html();
var elem3 = $(this).find("label").html();
alert(elem1);
alert(elem2);
alert(elem3);
});
https://jsfiddle.net/kLe5kLc3/1/
You could do something like this:
$( document ).ready(function() {
$('.amt').on("click", function() {
var h6 = $(this).find('h6').text();
var span = $(this).find('span').text();
var label = $(this).find('label').text();
});
});
Demo: https://jsfiddle.net/12q12k52/
here's the JS way :
var amt = document.querySelectorAll('.amt')
//add event listener to all .amt elements
var amtArr = [].slice.call(amt)
amtArr.forEach(function (x) {
x.addEventListener('click', listChilds, true)
});
//we retrive the target properties
function listChilds(e) {
console.log(e.path[1]) //all the children
//if you want one in particular it would be
console.log(e.target.childNodes[0])
}
<li class="amt" id="diecut_am1">
<h6>50</h6>
<span>$59.00</span>
<label>$51.30</label>
</li>
<li class="amt" id="diecut_am2">
<h6>100</h6>
<span>$68.00</span>
<label>$61.20</label>
</li>
You can iterate over the children of the clicked elements
$(this).children()

which <li> element was clicked?

I have 5 (maybe more) li elements.
<ul>
<li>One</li>
<li>Two</li>
<li>Three</li>
<li>Four</li>
<li>Five</li>
</ul>
I want to get which elements was clicked(which row??). If random user clicks Two I want to get $("li:eq(1)")(as typed).
How can I get this result?
You can use jQuery.index. Something like this:
$('ul > li').click(function() {
alert($(this).index($(this).parent('li'));
});
You can get the text node value of the clicked item with:
$('li').click(function(){
var clicked = $(this).text();
alert(clicked+" was clicked");
});
$("#ulId li").click(function() {
$(this).something(); //the clicked li is $(this), and you can invoke functions on it.
})
If you give your elements an id such as
<ul id="mylist">
<li id="el_1">One</li>
<li id="el_2">Two</li>
<li id="el_3">Three</li>
<li id="el_4">Four</li>
<li id="el_5">Five</li>
</ul>
Then you can use $(this).attr(id) in the click handler to determine the id of the clicked element. This will also allow to give non sequential ids to your elements, and will detach what's written in the <li> from the actual value you get.
Also, you can encode multiple value in the id (for instance el_5_3) which can be useful sometimes.
$("#mylist li").click(function()
{
var id = $(this).attr("id").split("_");
alert("You clicked the element with id="+id[1]);
});
Working example:
http://jsfiddle.net/jFrdp/
Working example: http://jsfiddle.net/tbugV/1/
$("#mylist li").each(function(index)
{
$(this).data("row", index);
}).
click(function()
{
alert($(this).data("row"));
});
$('html').click(function() {
var el = e.target;
alert(el);
});
As people just keep posting code, and no explanations, I will try the other way around...
The click event handler is called in the scope of the clicked element, so you can use the this keyword to access the element. You can use $(this) to get a jQuery object that contains the clicked element, so that you can use jQuery methods on it.
Example:
$(document).ready(function(){
$('ul li').click(function({
var text = $(this).text();
alert('You clicked on the item with the text "' + text + '"');
}));
});
$('li').click(function(){
alert($(this).html());
});
This code will alert one when user will click the one button.

Javascript show/hid div and change a css class based on which div is visible?

I have little piece of javascript to show/hide divs based on which link is clicked in a list. Its not very eligant, but it works fine. What I'd like to do is to assign an active state the a list item depending on which div is showing. Here is my JS and HTML:
var ids=new Array('section1','section2','section3','section4');
function switchid(id){
hideallids();
showdiv(id);
}
function hideallids(){
//loop through the array and hide each element by id
for (var i=0;i<ids.length;i++){
hidediv(ids[i]);
}
}
function hidediv(id) {
//safe function to hide an element with a specified id
document.getElementById(id).style.display = 'none';
}
function showdiv(id) {
//safe function to show an element with a specified id
document.getElementById(id).style.display = 'block';
}
html:
<ul>
<li class="activeItem">One</li>
<li>Two</li>
<li>Three</li>
<li>Four</li>
</ul>
<div id="section1" style="display:block;">1111111</div>
<div id="section2" style="display:none;">2222222</div>
<div id="section3" style="display:none;">3333333</div>
<div id="section4" style="display:none;">4444444</div>
When section 2 (or whichever) is clicked, I'd like the class "activeItem" to be removed from the li it is currently on and applied to the current li. Is this possible with javascript? I think it is, but I can't figure out how to implement it client side.
Thanks!
If you're able to use jQuery (or something similar) as it has this ability built in: http://docs.jquery.com/Attributes - addClass/removeClass
Change your anchors to use the onclick event instead of the href javascript code.
<a onclick="switchid('section1');return false;">One</a>
Then pass the argument this into your switchid function. this is a javascript keyword which in this scenario refers to the element (a).
<a onclick="switchid('section1', this);return false;">One</a>
Now to make the switchid function modify the list.
function switchid(id, el){
hideallids();
showdiv(id);
// rejiggered for text nodes
var li = el.parentNode.parentNode.childNodes[0];
while (li) {
if (!li.tagName || li.tagName.toLowerCase() != "li")
li = li.nextSibling; // skip the text node
if (li) {
li.className = "";
li = li.nextSibling;
}
}
el.parentNode.className = "activeItem";
}
