How to get ride of undefined in single condition?

What can I use instead of typeof in JS

An alternative would be to just do this, which is quite typical in JS:
if (articlesParams[itemId] &&

if (item && item.properties && item.properties.loaded && ...) {

One point to note is that this will not work if you want the if statement to execute even if loaded is false. In that case, you would be better off checking if it is undefined using typeof.
Although verbose, the standard JavaScript idiom for checking whether a variable is undefined does use typeof and in fact looks much like what you wrote. There is no separate JavaScript equivalent to PHP's isset().
Only two minor improvements to offer:
Use !== rather than != with typeof.
Define new variables for expressions you'll be re-using.
Like this:
var item = articlesParams[itemId];
if (typeof item !== 'undefined') {

Of course, if loaded, props, etc aren't re-used much, there's little motivation for defining vars for them.
As everyone has said, you could just chain lots of typeof expressions. Alternatively....

But there's a risk that you might apply this to a method rather than a variable and hence it should throw a different kind of exception. Further, it can't simply be wrapped up as a function (since the exception will occur when you try to call the function, and not in the function body). And there's little savings in the amount of typing you need to do or the ease of understanding what the code does compared to chained typeof expressions.
It may be more appropriate to do simply do this:

How to check if a parameter has been passed

I'm passing parameters to a function in a JavaScript library I wrote:

In the function, I pick them up:

There may be more elegant approaches to this (such as jQuery extends() if you use that library), but at a very basic level you could just do
if(typeof config['size'] !== "undefined" && typeof config['size']['height'] !== "undefined")

Javascript: Best way to check value of variable which might be undefined

I need to check if thevar[2] === 'debug' however thevar[2] might be undefined so if I ran the following code with it being undefined javascript would throw an error:

Your first example will not throw an error. Undefined properties of objects evaluate to undefined, but they don't throw errors.
var foo = {};
var nothing = foo.bar; // foo.bar is undefined, so "nothing" is undefined.
// no errors.
foo = [];
nothing = foo[42]; // undefined again
// still no errors
So, your second example is not needed. The first is sufficient.
If you can run if (typeof thevar[2] !== 'undefined') ... then you can reference thevar and you can run anything else with it.
If your array exists then checking against a value works fine, even if that value is undefined.
> var x = [];
undefined
> if ( x[0] === "debug" ) console.log("yes");
undefined
> if ( x[100] === "debug" ) console.log("yes");
undefined
The issue arises only when the array doesn't already exist. So as long as you know thevar has value then no check needed. Otherwise just check if thevar has value or do a little var assignment trick like

I created an isset function to check if a variable is defined and not null.

You are trying to check property of an undefined object. It doesn't make any sense. You could write like this:
alert(isset(a['not']) && isset(a['not']['existent']));
that won't work, and you can't make it work.
what happens is this:
the js engine tries to evaluate a['not'] and get's "undefined", then it tries to evaluate the property 'existent' of the undefined and you get that error.
all of that happens before the call to your function...
what you can do is something like:
var isset = function(obj, props) {
if ((typeof (obj) === 'undefined') || (obj === null))
return false;
else if (props && props.length > 0)
return isset(obj[props.shift()], props);
else
return true;
};
then you call it like this:
var a = [];
// Test 1
alert(isset(a, ['not']);

Test 2 will not work because "a['not']['existent']" value resolution precedes "isset" function call, and results in a runtime error.

JavaScript isset() equivalent

In PHP you can do if(isset($array['foo'])) { ... }. In JavaScript you often use if(array.foo) { ... } to do the same, but this is not exactly the same statement. The condition will also evaluate to false if array.foo does exists but is false or 0 (and probably other values as well).
What is the perfect equivalent of PHP's isset in JavaScript?
In a broader sense, a general, complete guide on JavaScript's handling of variables that don't exist, variables without a value, etc. would be convenient.
Update: 11 years and 11 months ago I posted this question, and wow, it still gets a lot of activity. Now, I'm pretty sure that when I wrote this, I only wanted to know how to check for the presence of a property in an associative array (a.k.a. dictionary), and as such the correct (for me) answers involve hasOwnProperty or the in operator. I wasn't interested in checking local or global variables.
But while I remember that well, that intent is not quite clear in the question as written, or even directly contradicted by it! I never mentioned the associative array, and PHP's isset does also do those other things. Let this be a lesson to all of us about how important it is to properly state your requirements in a question, and also how global variables, local variables, object properties, dictionary keys and what-have-you aren't Huey, Dewey, and Louie.
In the meantime (heh), many many people have provided answers to that effect as well, so for those of you who found this question through Google, well, I'm glad my vagueness helped in a way I guess. Anyway, just wanted to clarify that.
I generally use the typeof operator:
if (typeof obj.foo !== 'undefined') {

It will return "undefined" either if the property doesn't exist or its value is undefined.

There are other ways to figure out if a property exists on an object, like the hasOwnProperty method:
if (obj.hasOwnProperty('foo')) {
// your code here
}
And the in operator:
if ('foo' in obj) {
// your code here
}
The difference between the last two is that the hasOwnProperty method will check if the property exist physically on the object (the property is not inherited).
The in operator will check on all the properties reachable up in the prototype chain, e.g.:
var obj = { foo: 'bar'};
obj.hasOwnProperty('foo'); // true
obj.hasOwnProperty('toString'); // false
'toString' in obj; // true
As you can see, hasOwnProperty returns false and the in operator returns true when checking the toString method, this method is defined up in the prototype chain, because obj inherits form Object.prototype.

Use eval() which works but I personally avoid

This is a pretty bulletproof solution for testing if a variable exists :

Unfortunately, you cannot simply encapsulate it in a function.
You might think of doing something like this :

It's too long to write when used. But we can't package the typeof keyword into a function, because an error will thrown before the function is called, like this:

PHP Manual say:
isset — Determine if a variable is set and is not NULL
And interface something like this:

The parameter $var is the variable to be checked. it can have any number of parameter though.
isset() returns TRUE if var exists and has value other than NULL. FALSE otherwise.
Some example:

As this in mind, Apparently, It's not possible to write exact equivalent of php isset() function.
For example when we call like this:

Javascript trigger Uncaught ReferenceError: some_var is not defined at (file_name):line_number.
The important and remarkable thing about this behavior is that when trying to pass non-existent variables to normal functions, an error is triggered.
But in PHP isset() are not actually regular functions but language constructs. That means they're part of the PHP language itself, do not play by the normal rules of functions and can hence get away with not triggering an error for non-existent variables. This is important when trying to figure out whether a variable exists or not. But in javscript, it triggers an error in the first place say function call with non-existent variables.
My point is that we can't write it as equivlent javscript function but we can do something like this
