How do I display a javascript variable in a webpage via HTML? - javascript

I'm new to coding so sorry if I'm doing it all wrong, and I know this is very basic.
I'm trying to get a string of text to appear in a webpage using a variable defined in JavaScript in HTML. I've done this so far but the content area is still empty, I don't know where I'm going wrong. I need the var biography to display in the content div when the page is first requested and whenever the button is clicked. Thanks in advance for any help.
HTML code:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title> Katie Jeynes </title>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">
</head>
<body onload="displayBiography();">
<div id="leftBar">
<button class="button" onclick="displayBiography();"> Biography
</button>
</div>
<div id="content" >
<script src="myJS.js"> </script>
<script> displayBiography();</script>
</div>
</body>
</html>
JS code:
var content = document.getElementByID("content");
var biography = "<p> Katie Jeynes is currently in her 3rd year of
study"+
"undergraduate study etc </p>"
;
function displayBiography() {
"use strict";
content.innerHTML = biography;
}

You can set the text by typing:
document.getElementById("content").innerHTML = biography;

If you run the code on a browser and use its console you'll see that you have a sintax error "unterminated string literal" (More info about it can be found here) when defining biography.
You should use either this approach:
var biography = "<p> Katie Jeynes is currently in her 3rd year of study"+
"undergraduate study etc </p>";
or this one:
var biography = "<p> Katie Jeynes is currently in her 3rd year of study \
undergraduate study etc </p>";
If you'd like to add a breakline you can use the HTML tag <br> after the word study to show it to the user.
Also, as j08691 mentioned, getElementById is the correct sintax, not getElementByID.
RaphaMex suggests you to remove the script call from content. You should this and I'd like to explain you why.
Because you are already calling displayBiography() (either by clicking or loading the page for the first time), content.innerHTML will already change the HTML node content and will put inside it the value of your biography.

How I can show a Variable Valor in to a h1 in html and js

I'm new to coding things, and I want to learn a lot, so I found Stackoverflow, to solve my question...
The code I have is:
<h1 class="Result" id="result">0</h1>
Now, I do a basic JS File:
const number = 0;
var elem = document.getElementById('result');
And, now I don't know what to do, to display it in the h1, if someone can help me I would really appreciate it.
These are some of the ways you can dynamically add the value.
document.getElementById('result').innerHTML = number;
document.getElementById('result').innerText = number;
document.getElementById('result').textContent = number;
You have an h1 with an id of 'result', side note always have different id and class name so you dont confuse yourself.
<h1 class="Result" id="result">0</h1>
For your javascript:
var elem = document.getElementById('result')
So now that you have placed the content of the h1 inside a variable you can display it using:
console.log(elem)
The reason your code didn't work was that you didn't use the console.log of a variable to display the content inside the variable.
First you need to grab the h1 tag using the document.getElementById() method like you did.
Than you use the innerHTML property to display text.
Here is the full code:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>
javaScript example
</title>
</head>
<body>
<button onclick="myFunction()">
click to see message
</button>
<h1 Id="message" class="message">
</h1>
<script>
function myFuntion(){
var message = "hello, how are you\?";
document.getElementById("message").innerHTML = message;
}
</script>
</body>
</html>
First we created a button that has a function attach to it, than we create an function that will store the message. When the button is clicked, the message will show in the h1 tag.
Good luck!

Wordpress: how to use javascript variables into html body

I'm really new in Wordpress, Javascript and HTML so I know this question is really basic, but I wasn't able to find it solved anywhere.
I want to create some variables in javascript and then display them in my page which is created in Wordpress.
Reading other posts I've found I need to insert a javascript code that at the end stores my variable this way (dummy version):
<script type="javascript">
document.getElementById('test').innerHTML = 'hello';
</script>
And then on the text block I want to display my variable to be displayed I should add this code:
<body>
<p id="test"></p>
</body>
However I've tried adding the javascript in the header (Tatsu header) and also tried adding it in the text block (HTML version) in different combinations and it never worked. Tried adding the script block before and after the body block, and also tried having it inside, before and after the display line.
If I try the following it works:
<body>
<p>hello</p>
</body>
So I guess my problem is that I'm not setting the variable properly.
Can anyone help? Apologies if this is already solved somewhere, spent some hours and wasn't able to find it.
Thank you in advance.
Your problem is the type of which you're using here:
<script type="javascript">
I noticed this whilst constructing an example of this problem.
javascript is not a correct mime type.
It should be text/javascript as per https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Basics_of_HTTP/MIME_types/Common_types
Please note this is not a complete list. Such as application/javascript also being valid. Please also see https://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/media-types.xhtml
Working example:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width">
</head>
<body>
<p id="test">
This shouldn't show up
</p>
<script type="text/javascript">
console.log("####### JAVASCRIPT IS RUNNING ######")
document.getElementById('test').innerHTML = 'hello';
</script>
</body>
</html>

6 javascript tasks assigned to me by my lecturer

I am a complete beginner to javascript. I am also new to this website. I am asking for help to complete an assignment. I have been trying for more than 4 hours by looking at lecture material and online for a solution. It is causing me a lot of unnecessary stress. Before javascript we only used CSS and Html. I was given 6 javascript tasks to manipulate the html file (taskc.html) already given to me.
The tasks are as follows
Make a statement to change contents of h1 from "Welcome" to "Text"
2nd statement should make an new alert window when the page loads that delivers a message explaining what the page is about
3rd statement should change the title to "text"
4th statement should log the contents (innerHTML) of the first paragraph element in the console.
5th statement should hide the contents of the second paragraph when the page loads
6th statement should change the contents of the header to have a new colour of your choice
Here is that html.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>Task C - The Document Object Mode</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1 id="header">Welcome</h1>
<p id="first">This site uses JavaScript</p>
<p id="second">Javascript is very useful</p>
</body>
</html>
Because the actual coding im meant to add is meant to be in the .js file I was given. so I figured I had to link the js file in the html file so I added
<script type="text/javascript" src="taskc.js"></script>
With that out of the way I went to the lecture notes and I thought I would simply need to modify some of the code given to me there like
document.getElementById('demo').innerHTML = 'Hello World!';
When I put this code in brackets I got the error (document is not defined)
I modified it to match the requirements for task 1
here it is
document.getElementById('header').innerHTML = 'text';
I was confused because I didn't know what this error meant and of course Errors and how to fix them are never explained so I had to lookup how to resolve the error.
I found that to fix it I have to declare it as a variable so I ended up doing this.
var document = 'taskc.html';
When I did this for document, alert and console all the errors went away, but when I did a live preview only statement 1 was working
If anyone could help me fix this I would really appreciate because I don't understand enough javascript to be able to complete this in a reasonable amount of time.
So first: Please use Javascript functions to keep your code tidy and clean.
Example:
HTML:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>Task C - The Document Object Mode</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1 id="header">Welcome</h1>
<p id="first">This site uses JavaScript</p>
<p id="second">Javascript is very useful</p>
<script type="text/javascript" src="taskc.js">test();</script>
</body>
</html>
function test(){
alert("This is a test!");
}
Always implement scripts that are document referenced at the bottom of your html.
If you use JQuery you can use following code to check document is loaded:
$(document).ready(function(){
//foo bar
});

Create HTML doc like Bootstrap with Prism

I am facing a problem about how to create HTML code examples with Prism, either with pure JS or VueJS.
I need to get something like Bootstrap documentation, with several lines of HTML code displayed, indented, and highlighted.
It works when I put the HTML code directly between the pre/code tags, replacing the < with <.
But I want something more automatic, in which you write a line of code, for example to create a button, and under it, you have the code displayed.
So I am looking for a way to copy this line of code between the pre/code tags.
The problem is that either through the data objects of Vuejs (putting it as a string), or with the appendChild or innerHTML DOM methods, it doesn't works.
With VueJS I get a highlighted line of code but I can't have a multi-line example.
With appendChild and innerHTML, is displayed only the content of the element, for example the text between the button or div tags.
What I need is a way to display all the code, from < of the first tag to > of the last one.
How can I achieve this? Is it possible or is HTML impossible to easily display in the browser?
Here is the easy JS example I am working on.
If you uncomment the line between code tags, you will have the working example, the result I want to get from a more automatic way, just writing once the line of code, and then copying it.
Thanks
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head lang="en">
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<title>About</title>
</head>
<body>
<div id="gg" class="div" data-modifiers='["div--small", "div--big"]'>About</div>
<pre>
<code id="hh">
<!-- <div class="div" data-modifiers='["div--small", "div--big"]'>About</div>-->
</code>
</pre>
<script>
const example = document.getElementById('gg');
const toDisplay = document.getElementById('hh');
// toDisplay.appendChild(example);
hh.innerHTML = gg.innerHTML;
</script>
</body>
</html>
I finally found the solution using only pure JS (no framework).
I share the solution if one day someone needs it.
You can add Prism to get a highlighted displayed code.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head lang="en">
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<title>About</title>
</head>
<body>
<div id="gg" class="div" data-modifiers='["div--small", "div--big"]'>
<p>fff</p>
About
</div>
<pre>
<code id="hh" class="language-html">
</code>
</pre>
<script>
const example = document.getElementById('gg').outerHTML;
const toDisplay = document.getElementById('hh');
const regex = /</gi;
renamed = example.replace(regex , '<');
hh.innerHTML = renamed;
</script>
</body>
</html>

Jquery with dynamic paragraphs

im doing a school work with Jquery and I just want to know if its possible and how to do the following:
Page A has the following : external JS file that has the function to allow a user to enter some text and then when they press the submit button that text is automatically put as the paragraph text as ive use JS to get the element and replace the text using innerhtml.
External JS file:
function grabText() {
var grabThePara = document.getElementById("firstP").value;
var intoParagraph = document.getElementById("pOne").innerHTML = grabThePara;
}
HTML FILE :
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title></title>
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery-1.10.2"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="ts.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<input type="text" id="firstP" name="firstP">
<br />
<p id="pOne">Static works fine -- > this is the static</p>
<input type="button" onclick="grabText()" value="Submit">
GO to JD Panel
</body>
</html>
Page B has the Jquery part, this has the code that will grab the text from the Page A's first paragrpah called ID pOne, it gets the text without an issue if its STATIC input but the moment you use as described previous by using the textbox and dynamically changing the text of the paragraph the page A does the change but Page B still shows the static text input, not the new dynamic changes that occurred after input-ed into the textbox and submitted. I will show code.
Page B code :
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title></title>
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery-1.10.2.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="ts.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
Change the text again
<script type="text/javascript">
jQuery.ajax({
url: "adminPanel.html",
success: function (printIt) {
var html = jQuery('<p>').html(printIt);
var grabIt = html.find("p#pOne").html();
var sendItToParaOne = document.getElementById("paraOne").innerHTML = grabIt;
}
});
</script>
<p id="paraOne"></p>
</body>
</html>
Sorry for my English i know its not the best. thanks for taking the time in reading my issue and any helps is appreciated
Thanks again!

You need to save your data somewhere. If you don't want to work with a database, you can use HTML 5 web storage: http://www.w3schools.com/html/html5_webstorage.asp
Furthermore, looking at your external JS file, you might want to have a look at jQuery selectors: http://www.w3schools.com/jquery/jquery_selectors.asp
I hope this helps you.
You're confusing yourself by thinking that pages are able to talk to each other. Your page A has to send the changes to the server, but the server also has to be programmed to listen to those changes in server code like PHP or ASP.NET. Only then can page B get the changes made by page A.
