Fill selectbox on current site using AJAX and JSON - javascript

I don't have a lot of experience with Javascript and Ajax or JSON for that matter but I'm currently building an HTML lookup tool for a simple PostgreSQL database and I'm a little stuck here.
I want to fill the selectbox on the right with corresponding form names from our database whenever the user selects the study in the left selectbox
However, I have problems to process the array that I get back from the PHP script.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<script src="https://ajax.aspnetcdn.com/ajax/jQuery/jquery/3.2.1.min.js"</script>
<script>
function getselect(value) {
$.ajax(
{
type: "GET",
url: 'getforms.php',
data: {value: value},
dataType: "json",
success: fillbox
});
}
function fillbox(data) {
var forms = $('#forms');
var arr = $.parseJSON(data);
for (var x = 0; x < arr.length; x++) {
forms.append(new Option(arr[x]));
}
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
[...]
<?php
$snames = $conn->prepare("SELECT DISTINCT studienname FROM public.fulldict");
$snames->execute();
$a=$snames->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_COLUMN, 0);
?>
<table border="0">
<tr>
<th>Studien:</th>
<th>Formulare:</th>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>
<select id="study" name="Studien" size="12" onchange="getselect(this.value);">
<?php foreach($a as $option) { ?>
<option value="<?php echo $option ?>"> <?php echo $option ?> </option>
<?php }?>
</select>
</td>
<td>
<select id="forms"></select>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
?>
</body>
</html>
The getforms.php is intended to handle the SQL-query and send an array of values from the database back to Javascript, where the 'fillbox' function is supposed to fill the select box with the values from the array.
<?php
$f = $_GET['value'];
// Connect to Database
require_once 'dbconfig.php';
$dsn = "pgsql:host=$host;port=5432;dbname=$db;user=$username;password=$password";
$conn = new PDO($dsn);
// Get array with form names
$form_arr=array();
$fnames = $conn->prepare("SELECT DISTINCT formular FROM public.fulldict WHERE studienname = '$f'");
$fnames->execute();
$form_arr=$fnames->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_COLUMN, 0);
echo json_encode($form_arr);
?>
When I run the code and select anything from the first selectbox nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong accessing the second selectbox?
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks guys, I got it to work. After addiing the JSON header in the PHP file. I had to change the fillbox function to
function fillbox(data) {
var options = '';
for (var x = 0; x < data.length; x++) {
options += '<option value="' + data[x] + '">' + data[x] + '</option>';
}
$('#forms').html(options);}
Still don't quite understand why the '.append(new Option())' stuff didn't work though?

How to fetch mutiple values on select option and display in input type using ajax?

I'm trying to fetch mutiple values from database using ajax php.
I've a select option(value is fetching from database), and if i select any option then i want to display the related data which is matching with the id
of the the current option.but currently i'm able to fetch only one data column from databse.
I'm writing my current code please have a look at it and let me know how can i modify it.
My select option:-
<select data-placeholder="Choose a Vehicle..." class="chosen-select form-control" tabindex="-1" name='vno' onChange="getCity(this.value);" id="vno" required='true' >
<option value="">Select</option>
<?php
foreach($results as $vd) { ?>
<option value='<?php echo $vd['id'];?>'><?php echo $vd['vno'];?></option>";
<?php } ?>
</select>
and the js file
// Fetch city from Database
function getCity(val) {
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "retrive_data.php",
data:'id='+val,
success: function(data){
$("#rate").html(data);
}
});
}
retrive_data.php
<?php
require_once ("dbController.php");
$db_handle = new DBController();
if (! empty($_POST["id"])) {
$query = "SELECT * FROM tbl_vehicle WHERE id = '" . $_POST["id"] . "' ";
$results = $db_handle->runQuery($query);
?>
<?php
foreach ($results as $city) {
?>
<option value="<?php echo $city["rate"]; ?>"><?php echo $city["rate"]; ?></option>
<?php
}
}
?>
Change your js code as below
// Fetch city from Database
function getCity(val) {
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "retrive_data.php?id=" + val,
success: function(data){
$("#rate").html(data);
}
});
}
I’m making some assumptions about the desired result, and I’m not sure what the connection is between vehicles and city rates... but there are multiple issues here. Let’s work through them:
<select data-placeholder="Choose a Vehicle..." class="chosen-select form-control" tabindex="-1" name='vno' id="vno" required='true' >
<option value="">Select</option>
<?php foreach($results as $vd): ?>
<option value="<?= $vd['id']?>" ><?= $vd['vno'] ?></option>";
<?php endforeach; ?>
</select>
<!-- add a landing spot for the data coming in -->
<select id="rate"></select>
Nothing major here, just took out the onChange (typical practice is to have a listener in the JavaScript. Separation of concerns)
In your JavaScript, I don’t think you were successfully passing the id. It should be a JavaScript object. Also, send data to a function that knows how to put the data in your form:
// Fetch city from Database
function getCity(val) {
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "retrive_data.php",
data:{id: val},
success: function(data){
showRate(data);
}
});
}
Monitor the select for a change. (JavaScript should be inside document ready block)
$('#vno').on('change', function (){
getCity($(this).val());
});
Function to display the results of your ajax call:
showRate(data) {
// this lets you see the data that was returned
console.log(data);
var rate = $('#rate');
// clear current content
rate.html('');
// create options, assuming this is a select
$.each(data, function() {
rate.append($("<option />").val(this.rate).text(this.rate));
});
}
retrieve.php
Need to use prepared statements, and sending data as json instead of html is recommended
<?php
// sending json (data), not html (presentation)
header('Content-Type: application/json');
require_once ("dbController.php");
$db_handle = new DBController();
if (! empty($_POST["id"])) {
// substituting variables in a query is a big no-no
// $query = "SELECT * FROM tbl_vehicle WHERE id = '" . $_POST["id"] . "' ";
// must use placeholders / prepared statement
$query = "SELECT * FROM tbl_vehicle WHERE id = ?'";
// check your database object for how to do prepared statements and row fetching. If it doesn’t do prepared statements, dump it!
$stmt = $db_handle->prepare ($query);
$stmt->execute($_POST["id"]);
$out = array();
while($row = $stmt->fetch() ) {
$rate = $row['rate'];
$out[] = array(
'rate'=>$rate
);
}
die(json_encode($out));
}

How to delete/edit sql entry using PHP and AJAX?

I'm learning PHP and SQL and as exercise I'm working on a page that is actually something like admin panel for a website that lists movies. I'm using lampp and phpmyadmin where I have created a simple database that contains two tables, movie list and users list.
Because I'm beginner and my code is probably messy, I'm describing what I tried to achieve. There's login.php page where the only functionality is typing username and password. If info matches info from SQL table, user proceeds to adminpanel.php.
This page should load a list of movies and create a table with that data. At the end of each row I want two buttons, edit and delete. What I'm trying to achieve is to delete current row where delete button is clicked, for delete button. Edit button should show hidden form just for the row where button was clicked. This form would contain button that actually updates data in SQL table after filling form and clicking the button. (I haven't added function that shows form yet, I care about buttons much more) Form for adding movies at the end of the file works.
Here's adminpanel.php

</html>
Here's my javascript file with ajax calls:
$(document).ready(function(e){
$('#submit_movie').click(function(e){
e.preventDefault();
var movie_name = $('#movie_name').val();
var movie_year = $('#movie_year').val();
var movie_genre = $('#movie_genre').val();
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
data: {movie_name:movie_name, movie_year:movie_year, movie_genre:movie_genre},
url: "insert.php",
success: function(result){
alert('Movie ' + movie_name + ' (' + movie_year + ')' +' added successfully.');
document.location.reload();
}
})
});
$('.btnedit').click(function(e){
var id = $(this).parent().prev().prev().prev().prev().html();
alert(id);
//unfinished function
})
$('.btndlt').click(function(e){
var id = $(this).parent().prev().prev().prev().prev().prev().html();
e.preventDefault();
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
data: {id:id},
url: 'delete_row.php',
success: function(result){
alert('Successfully deleted.');
document.location.reload();
}
})
})
});
Here's php page for adding a movie, insert.php (this one works, posting it just for more information) :
<?php
require_once('connection.php');
if($_REQUEST['movie_name']){
$name = $_REQUEST['movie_name'];
$year = $_REQUEST['movie_year'];
$genre = $_REQUEST['movie_genre'];
$sql = "INSERT INTO movies(name, year, genre) VALUES ('$name','$year','$genre')";
$query = mysqli_query($conn, $sql);
}
?>
Here's delete_row.php file for deleting entry with delete button:
<?php
require_once('connection.php');
$id = $_REQUEST['id'];
if(isset($_REQUEST['delete'])){
$sql = "DELETE FROM `movies` WHERE movie_id = $id";
$query = mysqli_query($conn, $sql);
}
?>
As you can probably see I was all over the place with php and ajax because I tried to implement multiple solutions or mix them to solve the problem.
At this stage when I click delete button I get alert message that says erasing is successful and adminpanel.php reloads with list of movies. However the movie is still there and in SQL database.
When I tried to debug delete_row.php I found out that index "id" is undefined every time even though I think I'm passing it with ajax call.
Edit
I should've said that security is not my concern right now, I do this exercise just for functionalities I described. :) Security is my next step, I am aware this code is not secure at all.
When I tried to debug delete_row.php I found out that index "id" is
undefined every time even though I think I'm passing it with ajax
call.
The reason this happens is probably because you're accessing delete_row.php directly through the browser, and because the form is not submitted (it will later through ajax) the $_REQUEST variable will always be undefined.
When debugging $_REQUEST (or $_POST) variables in the future, you should use Postman where you can actually request that php file sending your own POST arguments.
On your specific code, the query will never run because of this line:
if(isset($_REQUEST['delete']))
Which is checking for a delete variable that was never sent in the first place, hence will always resolve false
Use this code instead on delete_row.php:
<?php
require_once('connection.php');
if(isset($_REQUEST['id'])){
$id = $_REQUEST['id'];
$sql = "DELETE FROM `movies` WHERE movie_id = $id";
$query = mysqli_query($conn, $sql);
}
?>

How to view data from DB with AJAX immediately after script counts it?

I am practising AJAX by implementing editable HTML table looking like this:
The logic is this:
User clicks on left column (containing integer);
JS script catches its value and by using AJAX adds them to database;
PHP script fetches this value, makes some calculations, adds them to database and shows result in right column (date in <td>).
Now as expected PHP script needs page refreshing to show calculation result (date in <td>). I'm trying to write JS script which will retrieve calculated data from database and immediately show in HTML table's cell.
Having troubles with it. Asking for help with this issue.
index.php:
<form id="form-wrap" action="functions.php" method="POST">
<select name="select1" required>
<?php
for ($i = 1; $i <= 20; $i++) {
echo "<option>".$i."</option>";
}
?>
</select>
<br>
<input type="text" id="name" name="name">
<input type="date" id="day" name="day">
<input type="submit" name="button_ok" id="button_ok" value="Write">
<input type="submit" name="show" id="show" value="Show table">
</form>
functions.php:
<?php
require_once 'dbconnect.php';
$loged = $_POST["name"];
$day = $_POST["day"];
class Count_Add_Class {
public function CountDays() {
global $day, $loged, $day_remind1, $days_before1;
$currenttime = time();
$days_before1 = $_POST["select1"];
// ... make some calculations with user's input ...
$this->AddDate();
}
public function AddDate() {
global $pdo, $loged, $day, $day_remind1, $days_before1;
if (isset($_POST['button_ok'])) {
// ... insert in database user's inpt and calculation result ...
}
}
}
$obj = new Count_Add_Class();
$obj -> CountDays();
function Count_days_new_data() {
global $pdo, $day, $loged, $day_remind1_updated,
$stmt = $pdo->prepare("SELECT select1 FROM tablex WHERE name=?");
$stmt->execute([$loged]);
$res = $stmt->fetchAll();
foreach ($res as $row) {
$day_remind1_updated = $row['select1'];
}
$day_remind1_updated = $day - ($days_before1_updated * 86400);
$day_remind1_updated = date('Y-m-d', $day_remind1_updated);
}
Count_days_new_data();
function Show() {
global $pdo, $loged, $faq, $day_remind1_updated;
$stmt = $pdo->prepare("SELECT * FROM tablex WHERE name=?");
$stmt->execute([$loged]);
$faq = $stmt->fetchAll();
$s1 = $_POST['editval'];
$id = $_POST['id'];
$stmt2 = $pdo->prepare("UPDATE tablex SET select1=? WHERE
id=?");
$stmt2->execute([$s1, $id]);
$stmt3 = $pdo -> prepare("UPDATE tablex SET day_remind1=?,WHERE
id=?");
$stmt3->execute([$day_remind1_updated, $id]);
require_once 'table.php';
}
Show();
?>
table.php:
<div id="day-data">
<tbody>
<?php
foreach($faq as $key=>$value) {
?>
<tr class="table_row">
<td><?php echo $value['name']; ?></td>
<td aria-label="First" contenteditable="true" onBlur="saveToDatabase(this,'select1','<?php echo $faq[$key]["id"];
?>')" onClick="showEdit(this);"><?php echo $faq[$key]["select1"]; ?>
</td>
<td><?php echo $value['day_remind1']; ?></td>
</tr>
<?php
}
?>
edit.js:
function showEdit(editableObj) {
$(editableObj).css("background","#FFF");
}
function saveToDatabase(editableObj,column,id) {
$(editableObj).css("background","#FFF url(loaderIcon.gif) no-repeat
right");
$.ajax({
url: "functions.php",
type: "POST",
data:'column='+column+'&editval='+editableObj.innerHTML+'&id='+id,
success: function(data){
$(editableObj).css("background","#FDFDFD");
}
});
}
show.js: (inspired by this answer)
$(".tbl tbody").on("click", "tr", function() {
var id = $(this).find("td")[0].text(); // gets the first td of the
clicked tr
var value = $(this).find("td")[1].text()
$.ajax({
url : "table.php",
dataType: "text",
success : function (data) {
$(".day-data").html(data);
},
error: function (data) {
(".tbl").html('No such file found on server');
}
});
});
When user clicks on HTML-table left column it is higligted well; when he changes it, data is addiing to database well. Now when page is refreshed new data is calculated, added to database and shown in HTML-table's right column.
I suppose problem is in show.js. Need some help in correcting this script!
Update1:
Added illustartion of my task's logic:
It is unfortunate, that you have everything in the functions.php file. It doesn't just count the values, it also renders the table. So when you call the function saveToDatabase, the request that you make to functions.php (and i understand it coorectly) already returns the table with the updated data (as argument of the success function). Try removing show.js and changing the success function content in edit.js from this:
$(editableObj).css("background","#FDFDFD");
to this
$(editableObj).css("background","#FDFDFD");
$(".day-data").replaceWith(data);

PHP, AJAX, and server-client frustrations

I have a table that's generated from php. The way I've done this is probably not the most efficient way to do it since I wrote it all myself and I'm not an expert.
Everything starts when the user pastes part numbers into a search box on a previous page, which is then sent here to return.php under the variable lines.
return.php
$c = $_POST['c'];
if (!$_SESSION['lines']) {
$_SESSION['lines'] = $_POST['lines'];
}
$partNumber = array(); //define $partNumber as array
$x = -1;
$supplierQuery = "SELECT distinct supplier, quotePartNumber FROM allparts WHERE quotePartNumber = '$q'" ;
$supplierResult = mysqli_query($con, $supplierQuery);
foreach ($_SESSION['lines'] as $q) {
$x = $x + 1; // each time we loop through this, x++
while ($row = mysqli_fetch_array($supplierResult)) {
$partNumber[] = $row['quotePartNumber'];
$customerQuery = "SELECT DISTINCT quoteCustomer FROM $supplier where quotePartNumber = '$q'";
if (!$c) { // $c becomes set once a user types in an end customer - without that, we want ALL generic info to be returned.
$costQuery = "SELECT * FROM $supplier where quotePartNumber = '$partNumber[$x]' ORDER BY quoteCost ASC LIMIT 1" ;
} else {
$costQuery = "SELECT * FROM $supplier where quotePartNumber = '$partNumber[$x]' and quoteCustomer = '$c' ORDER BY quoteCost ASC LIMIT 1" ;
}
$getCustomer = mysqli_query($con, $customerQuery);
}
later on in my table, I have this:
<td><?= $partNumber[$x] ?></td>
<td><?= $cost ?></td>
<td>
<select class="btn btn-danger" onChange="selectCustomerCMR(this.value)">
<option value="" disabled selected><?php if($c) { print $c; } else { print "Select Purchasing Customer";} ?></option>
<?php
while ($row = mysqli_fetch_array($getCustomer)) {
$customerName = $row['quoteCustomer'];
?>
<option><?= $customerName ?></option>
<?php
}
?>
</select>
</td>
Any change to the dropdown will launch this script:
<script>
function selectCustomerCMR(str) {
var id = str;
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: 'return.php',
data: {'c':id,'lines':lines},
success:function(data){
$("#info").html(data);
}
});
}
</script>
What I'm trying to do
Let's say my generated table has 3 rows, with part numbers
There is a drop-down to allow the user to select a specific customer. When the user clicks on this, the script takes that value and uses AJAX to send it back to the same page (return.php), which then grabs it using the $c = $_POST['c']; code.
My Issue
When return.php loads a "second time" with a value for $c, I don't know how to make it so that the line that the user selected gets changed. Right now, anytime I select a customer from a line's drop-down, return.php reloads, and it assigns that customer to the FIRST row, ignoring all the other rows.
I specifically created $partNumber as an array and used $x so I could increase the value of x each time the foreach loop iterated. This worked, so of the three lines in the above table, the first one is $partNumber[0] and the second one is $partNumber[1], etc... But I don't know how to get that information into the javascript function and send it back to the page when it reloads, so that I can then change my SQL query to ONLY action when the condition is right for that line...
Thanks for reading, and thanks for any help!
Consider changing your <select> code to this:
<select class="btn btn-danger" data-x="<?= $x ?>" onChange="selectCustomerCMR(this)">
Then, your Ajax code can be changed to this:
function selectCustomerCMR(select) {
var id = select.value, x = select.getAttribute("data-x");
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',
url: 'return.php',
data: { c: id, lines: lines, x: x },
success: function(data){
// Update!
}
});
}
That way, your PHP can get both c and x.

dynamically updating select boxes with php mysql jquery ajax

I am trying to populate an initial customer select box with results from PDO MySql via PHP. Then I would like the second contact select box to update with additional information related to what was chosen in the first box. I can't get the second script to work. I think the problem is in my ajax script because the PHP scripts work fine when ran on there own.
The Primary Script
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery-1.11.0.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery-ui-1.10.4.custom.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#contact").change(function(){
var cid = $("#cid").val();
$.ajax({
type:"post",
url:"contact.php",
data:"cid="+cid,
success: function(data) {
$("#contact").html(data);
}
});
});
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
Campaign :
<select name="customer" id="customer">
<option>-Select a Customer-</option>
<?php
include ("function.php");
include("connect.php");
$id = $_SESSION['profile']['id'];
foreach($db->query("SELECT * FROM customers WHERE pid = '$id'") as $row) {
echo "<option value=" . $row['id'] . ">" . $row['name'] . "</option>";
}
?>
</select>
<select name="contact" id="contact">
<option>-Select a Contact-</option>
</select>
</body>
</html>
The Contact script
include("connect.php");
$cid = $_POST["cid"];
foreach($db->query("SELECT * FROM contact WHERE cid = '$cid'") as $row) {
echo '<option value="'.$row['id'].'">'.$row['name'].'</option>';
Maybe your second function should start on #customer change
I see you used the contact select in ajax not customer as you described. However the code you wrote, you used the contact selector with change event, But the contact select box contain only one value, How can it change ??
<select name="contact" id="contact">
<option>-Select a Contact-</option>
</select>
The previous select should has more than option to can change. Or I think you mean the #customer instead contact as following:-
$("#customer").change(function(){
// your code;
});
Why not just encode a JSON response with the ids and names?
foreach($db->query("SELECT * FROM contact WHERE cid = '$cid'") as $row) {
$arr[] = array("id" => $row['id'], "name" => $row['name']);
}
echo json_encode($arr);
Then in your ajax response, you could do
$(document).ready(function () {
$("#customer").change(function () {
var cid = $("#customer").val();
$.ajax({
type: "post",
url: "contact.php",
data: {cid: cid},
success: function (data) {
var options = [];
$.each(data, function () {
options.push('<option value="' + this.id + '">' + this.name + '</option>');
});
$("#contact").html(options.join(""));
}
});
});
});
