Modifying "this" variables - javascript

I was playing around with modifying Array Prototype, but I'm stumped at this part. Would be great if you could help me.
Alright, suppose I want to add a function "Parent" to Array.prototype
Array.prototype.Parent = function() {
console.log(this);
}
Next, I want to add a Child function to the Parent function. I would do it like this:
Array.prototype.Parent.Child = function() {
console.log(this);
}
Now, I want both this in Parent and Child to refer to the array itself. So:
[1,2,3].Parent(); // Would output [1,2,3];
[1,2,3].Parent.Child(); // Want it to print [1,2,3];
Basically, I want this variable in child to refer to the array instead of the Parent Function. Any insight?

You can make Parent a getter that returns a unique function for each array, providing context:

The problem here is how the this variable is identified if you have a series of object lookups then a function call. Like this.
foo.bar.baz.qux();
The qux method has a this value equal to foo.bar.baz.
So in essence functions in javascript have a hidden argument this that is the object they are called on.
There is no way to modify this behavior in javascript.

You can reassign this using Function.bind.
var myArray = [1,2,3];
myArray.Parent.Child.bind( myArray )();
In my example, myArray.Parent.Child is the Function you defined in your example - then we use bind to create a copy of the function with this set to myArray, then we use the () operator to invoke it.
This can be reduced to a single line with a self-executing lambda (ES6):
( x => x.Parent.Child.bind( x )() )( myArray );
...which is equivalent to this in ES5:
( function( x ){ return x.Parent.Child.bind( x )() } )( myArray );

Method vs Functions, and other questions

With respect to JS, what's the difference between the two? I know methods are associated with objects, but am confused what's the purpose of functions? How does the syntax of each of them differ?
Also, what's the difference between these 2 syntax'es:
var myFirstFunc = function(param) {

and
function myFirstFunc(param) {
//Do something
};
Also, I saw somewhere that we need to do something like this before using a function:
obj.myFirstFunc = myFirstFunc;
obj.myFirstFunc("param");
Why is the first line required, and what does it do?

To answer your title question as to what is the difference between a 'function' and a 'method'.
It's semantics and has to do with what you are trying to express.
In JavaScript every function is an object. An object is a collection of key:value pairs. If a value is a primitive (number, string, boolean), or another object, the value is considered a property. If a value is a function, it is called a 'method'.
Within the scope of an object, a function is referred to as a method of that object. It is invoked from the object namespace MyObj.theMethod(). Since we said that a function is an object, a function within a function can be considered a method of that function.
You could say things like “I am going to use the save method of my object.” And "This save method accepts a function as a parameter.” But you generally wouldn't say that a function accepts a method as a parameter.
Btw, the book JavaScript Patterns by Stoyan Stefanov covers your questions in detail, and I highly recommend it if you really want to understand the language. Here's a quote from the book on this subject:
So it could happen that a function A, being an object, has properties and methods, one of which happens to be another function B. Then B can accept a function C as an argument and, when executed, can return another function D.
There is a slight difference -
Method : Method is a function when object is associated with it.

Many answers are saying something along the lines that a method is what a function is called when it is defined on an object.
While this is often true in the way the word is used when people talk about JavaScript or object oriented programming in general (see here), it is worth noting that in ES6 the term method has taken on a very specific meaning (see section 14.3 Method Definitions of the specs).
Method Definitions
A method (in the strict sense) is a function that was defined through the concise method syntax in an object literal or as a class method in a class declaration / expression:

Method Specificities
This answer gives a good overview about the specificities of methods (in the strict sense), namely:
methods get assigned an internal [[HomeObject]] property which allows them to use super.
methods are not created with a prototype property and they don't have an internal [[Construct]] method which means that they cannot be called with new.
the name of a method does not become a binding in the method's scope.
Below are some examples illustrating how methods (in the strict sense) differ from functions defined on objects through function expressions:

A method is a property of an object whose value is a function. Methods are called on objects in the following format: object.method().

you call it this way

Your first line, is creating an object that references a function. You would reference it like this:
myFirstFunc(param);
But you can pass it to another function since it will return the function like so:
function mySecondFunction(func_param){}
mySecondFunction(myFirstFunc);
The second line just creates a function called myFirstFunc which would be referenced like this:
myFirstFunc(param);
And is limited in scope depending on where it is declared, if it is declared outside of any other function it belongs to the global scope. However you can declare a function inside another function. The scope of that function is then limited to the function its declared inside of.

Your final examples are creating instances of functions that are then referenced though an object parameter. So this:
function myFirstFunc(param){};
obj.myFirst = myFirstFunc(); //not right!
obj.myFirst = new myFirstFunc(); //right!
obj.myFirst('something here'); //now calling the function
Says that you have an object that references an instance of a function. The key here is that if the function changes the reference you stored in obj.myFirst will not be changed.
While #kevin is basically right there is only functions in JS you can create functions that are much more like methods then functions, take this for example:
function player(){
this.stats = {
health: 0,
mana: 0,

You could then call player.stats.get() and it would return to you the value of heath, and mana. So I would consider get and set in this instance to be methods of the player.stats object.
A function executes a list of statements example:

1) A method is a function that is applied to an object example:
var message = "Hello world!";
var x = message.toUpperCase(); // .toUpperCase() is a built in function
2) Creating a method using an object constructor. Once the method belongs to the object you can apply it to that object. example:

Definition of a method: A method is a property of an object that is a function. Methods are defined the way normal functions are defined, except that they have to be assigned as the property of an object.
var myFirstFunc = function(param) {
//Do something
};
and
function myFirstFunc(param) {
//Do something
};
are (almost) identical. The second is (usually) just shorthand. However, as this jsfiddle (http://jsfiddle.net/cu2Sy/) shows, function myFirstFunc will cause the function to be defined as soon as the enclosing scope is entered, whereas myFirstFunc = function will only create it once execution reaches that line.
As for methods, they have a this argument, which is the current object, so:

The exact syntax you showed is because you can also do this:
function abc( ) {
this.test = 2;
}
var obj = {};
obj.func = abc;
obj.func( ); // sets obj.test to 2
but you shouldn't without good reason.

It is very clear: when you call a function if it implicitly has a this (to point an object) and if you can't call the function without an object, the function deserves to name as method.

Enhance function prototype to call a given function before execution itself

I want to do an AOP-like 'before' functionality for JavaScript functions.
So I looked for existing solution and found the aop-plugin for jQuery. Unfortunately the plugin simply wraps the given function. So any object that points to the original function before enhancing the function, still points to the original function. Calling the function from these objects calls the not enhanced version of the function.
Instead of wrapping functions with other functions, I want to change the function object itself, so previous references do not cause unanticipated behaviour. So I got something like this:

The body, parameters and referencing environment of a function are immutable so you cannot enhance a function, you can only make new functions.
You could make your function enhanceable from the beginning like this:

Javascript classes and variable references

I'm trying to solve this puzzle minded Javascript OOP problem.
So I have the following class :

When I call every method I expect to print the name of it, right? But here is what i get :
a.alpha(); // returns gama ?!?
a.beta(); // returns gama ?!?
a.gama(); // returns gama
But when my class looks like this :

ClassB.prototype = {
methods : ['alpha', 'beta', 'gama'],
initialize: function() {

Why is this happening ?
for ( var i in this.methods ) {
this[this.methods[i]] = function() {
console.log(this.methods[i]);
}
}
Your problem lies here. When this loop ends, i is the last element. Each function uses the same i, so they are all the last element.
When you use addMethod you are making a closure to "capture" the correct value.
EDIT: When you call addMethod you are "copying" the value, instead of using the i value, which changes with each loop iteration.
In your first version:
initialize : function() {
for ( var i in this.methods ) {
this[this.methods[i]] = function() {
console.log(this.methods[i]);
}
}
}
The methods that you create within initialize all refer to the same i variable from initialize - and after initialize runs i has the value "gama", so regardless of which of the methods you call that's the value of i that they'll log to the console. JS doesn't store the current value of i at the time the method is created.
JS creates a "closure" for each function - variables declared in your initialize function (i.e., i) continue to be in scope for the nested function(s) even after initialize has finished.
The second version calls addMethod to add each method:
addMethod: function(method) {
this[method] = function() {
console.log(method);
}
}
...and so when they run they'll refer to their own "copy" of the method parameter because then there is a separate closure for each of the methods.

You can fix your first example by adding an anonymous closure:
initialize : function() {
for ( var i in this.methods ) {
(function (i) { // anonymous closure
this[this.methods[i]] = function() {

}).call(this, i); // use .call() if you need "this" inside
}
}
Now it will work the same way as your second example. "Anonymous" means that the closure is made by function which doesn't have a name and is called instantly as it is "created".
Note sideways: use .call(this, ...) to preserve this inside the called function, or you can do var that = this, use that instead of this and call the function normally:

})(i); // Called normally so use "that" instead of "this"!

Well, first of all stop using for (property in object) loops on Arrays. It's all fun and games until somebody prototypes to the Array object which is both a perfectly reasonable and very useful/popular thing to do. This will result in custom methods getting added to your for x in array loops.
As for the problem, it's doing exactly what you told it to do in version 1. The problem is that by the time you get around to firing it, i is the last thing i was, 'gamma'. When you pass a reference into a function as an argument, the function holds on to the value's state as it was passed.

Can a method find out the "this" of its parent object?

Let's say I've come up with a particular sort function that I want to put in the prototype of some Array based object (I'll use Array itself here). I can do
Array.prototype.specialSort = function...
but what I'd really like to do is
Array.prototype.sort.special = function...
the problem, of course, is that when it's called, the latter won't know about the Array object, it will only know about the sort, so it can't sort. Is there any magical incantation to pass a "this" down the tree?
Secondary question (since the answer to the primary question is likely "no"): What would you do to implement the notion of "sub-methods" with maximum elegance?
This should be fairly close to what you want:

Another option would be to use Function.prototype.call or Function.prototype.apply, especially if you want arr.sort () to sort the list as normal.
Array.prototype.sort.special.call (arr, arg1, arg2, etc);
Using the second method over the first allows one to use the call and apply methods easily on the sort.special method. Could be useful when doing something like the following:

Thanks for the guidance to both Pointy and trinithis. I think I am clear on the subject now. The sticking point is that, although sort() is a method of the Array, if it's not invoked, it's just a member (or property), so it has no "this". I was wanting the "this" it would have had if it had been invoked. And since I was invoking something at the end of the chain, I was kind of hoping there was some magic that would keep it all method-y. But no.
What I would probably do is have a separate "sorts" method to act as the grouper for my special methods, and leave the existing sort alone.

closure not working

In the above case I was expecting an output of:
'hello world'
Why is this._instance not accessing the the variable which should be accessible by virtue of closure? I tested this in FF and am getting undefined.
You don't assign _instance to the object, it's just a closure variable, and should be accessed without using this:

Note that I have not tried to compile the above code, so it might contain a few mistakes. Nothing JsLint can't handle though!
You might want to consider adding filtering to the setOptions method so that it doesn't assign properties you don't want, or filter out methods etc declared in the options-parameter.
Additionally, if you use JQuery, or similar library, there are (often) utility functions for merging objects, making it trivial to write the setOptions-method:

Your problem is this.
Change this._instance to _instance. You may also want to wrap your self-invoking function in parentheses like (function() { ... })(); for maximum browser compatibility.
As the others have said, you need to remove "this." from your function.
The reason for the problem is down to the binding of the "this" keyword in the two function contexts. Inside the closure, "this" refers to the function that is being returned, and not to the outer function. You could resolve this by doing the following:
var Dog = function() {
var _instance = 'hello world';
var that = this; //Assign "this" to "that"
return function() {
console.log(that._instance); //Use reference to "that"
}
} ();
var l = new Dog();
You could also probably do something closer with the function.apply() method, but I'll leave that to you.
I hope that helps.
Perhaps you are satisfied by removing "this.", but you may be interested to learn that "this" doesn't refer to what you wanted it to anyway. What it refers to really depends on how the function is called. It does not necessarily refer to an instance of an object constructed by the function you returned, or its container function, or to any other object. By default, if you merely call the function as a normal function, "this" will refer to the global window context.
What you must do to have "this" be bound to any specific object is to call the function as a method of that object, or of its prototype. e.g. foo.myMethod(). Another way is that you can use the apply or call method, passing in the object you want it to apply to. e.g. anyFunction.apply(foo).
