How to select empty inputs (value="") using jQuery
(7 answers)
Closed 6 years ago.
I am trying to get an empty input if there is one in my div using jQuery. It is not working as it should.
There are 4 empty inputs in the div.
Here is my jquery:
var firstEmpty = $('#brochureItems').find('input:text:not(:checkbox,:button):visible:first:enabled[value= ""]').first().val();
console.log(firstEmpty);
That outputs 'undefined'.
When I remove the "[value=""]", I get '(an empty string)' outputted.
I just thought of something, I am adding those inputs in dynamically with jquery on page load. Would that have something to do with it?
If I understood you right you want to get all empty inputs inside a div. To do so, try this code:
HTML
<div>
<input type="text">
<input type="text">
<input type="text">
<input type="text">
<input type="text" value="asdsad">
</div>
JS
var firstEmpty = $("div input[type='text']").filter(function() { return $(this).val() == ""; });
or if you want take all empty:
var emptyInputs = [];
$("div input[type='text']").each(function(){
if($(this).val() == '')
emptyInputs.push($(this))
});
Here is working Fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/xs9jagc8/
Try this:
function findEmpty(){
var div=document.getElementById('theDivID');
for(var i=0;i<div.children.length;i++){
if(div.children[i].value==''){
return div.children[i].id;
}
}
return false;
}
function verify(){
var lol = findEmpty();
if(lol===false){
//Do whatever
alert("All filled!");
} else {
alert("The first empty input is: "+lol);
}
}
<div id='theDivID'>
<input id='blah' type='text'/>
<input id='bleh' type='text'/>
<input id='qwertyuiop' type='text'/>
<input type='text'/>
</div>
<input type='button' onclick='verify();' value='Check'/>

How do I get the value of text input field using JavaScript?
(16 answers)
Closed 1 year ago.
hi i have javascript issue that i wrote a input when i change it text to sadra it doesn't alert "your text contains "sadra" word " how can i resolve it ? thanks for helping ...
here is the code:
var realText;
function text(realText) {
var realText = document.getElementById('input1').innerHTML;
if (realText.includes('sadra')) {
alert("your text contains \"sadra\" word ");
}
}
<label>Input :</label>
<input type="text" name="test" id="input1" onchange="text(realText)" />
If you are trying to access the value inside the element with id input1, then the selector should point to value of the node.
document.getElementById('input1').value
Also there is no need to pass the realText parameter to the onchange event. This is not going to have an impact on the functionality.
innerHTML gives the html code inside a specified id
innerHTML Example
function text() {
var realText = document.getElementById('container').innerHTML;
console.log('Inner HTML', realText);
}
<div id="container">
<label>Input :</label>
<input type="text" name="test" id="input1" onchange="text()" />
</div>
Your Working fiddle
function text() {
var realText = document.getElementById('input1').value;
if (realText.includes('sadra')) {
alert("your text contains \"sadra\" word ");
}
}
<label>Input :</label>
<input type="text" name="test" id="input1" onchange="text()" />

How to get the selected radio button’s value?
(19 answers)
Closed 8 years ago.
undefined output!! am i missing sth ? any idea ?
here is the radio button inputs :
<tr>
<td>Yes <input type="radio" name="email" id="email" value="yes"/></td>
<td></td>
<td>No <input type="radio" name="email" id="email" value="no"checked="checked"/></td>
</tr>
<input type="button" value="submit" onclick="doIt()" style="width: 150px; height:30px" />
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">
function doIt() {
var emailopt = document.getElementById('email').checked.value;
alert (emailopt);
}
The way you have tried is completely wrong. Instead use the below approach
1) Iterate through all the radio buttons with name property
2) Now using checked attribute, place an if statement and then extract the value
function doIt() {
var emailopt = document.getElementsByName('email');
for (i = 0; i < emailopt.length; i++) {
if (emailopt[i].checked) {
alert(emailopt[i].value)
}
}
}
Fiddle
Try using this:
function doIt() {
var emailopt = document.getElementById('email').checked;
alert (emailopt);
}
It will return true and false.
Lets me know if you have any questions.I hope it will help you.
I am creating a set of textboxes dynamically while pressing (+) button, by cloning the following HTML template:
<div id= "other_leaders" class="controls form-input">
<input type="text" name="other_leader_fname[]" class="input_bottom other_leader_fname" id="other_leader_fname" placeholder="First Name" value="'.$val[0].'" />
<input type="text" name="other_leader_lname[]" class="input_bottom other_leader_lname" id="other_leader_lname" placeholder="Last Name" value="'.$val[1].'" />
<input type="text" name="other_leader_email[]" class="other_leader_email" id="other_leader_email" placeholder="Email Address" value="'.$val[2].'" />
<input type="text" name="other_leader_org[]" class="other_leader_org" id="other_leader_org" placeholder="Organisation/College" value="'.$val[3].'" />
<span class="remove btn"><i class="icon-minus"></i></span>
</div>
I am able to do single textbox validation by following code:
$("input[name*='other_leader_fname']").each(function(){
if($(this).val()=="" || !RegExpression.test($(this).val()))
{
$(this).addClass('custom-error')
fnameflag = 0;
}
});
Now my question is how to do empty validation for all four textboxes, if any one textbox field is filled by the user in that particular textbox group.
for example: if i enter values in the <div> with id other_leader_fname, then it should perform empty validation for other three textboxes of this particular group.
how can i do it?
Try this , You can apply your validation rules to all the text box in the div by using following code:
$("#other_leaders :input[type='text']").each(function(){
if($(this).val()=="" || !RegExpression.test($(this).val()))
{
$(this).addClass('custom-error')
fnameflag = 0;
}
});
As you have just one element so there is no need to have a loop over it:
var $othLeader = $("input[name*='other_leader_fname']");
if($othLeader.val()=="" || !RegExpression.test($othLeader.val())){
$(this).addClass('custom-error');
fnameflag = 0;
}
And if you have form then you can validate this in your form's submit function.
You can iterate over the .controls using the each() and check for filled inputs in each group using filter for performing the validation as follows:
$('.controls').each(function(){
var $inputs = $(this).find('input');
var filled = $inputs.filter(function(){
return this.value != "";
});
if(filled.length){
$inputs.each(function(){
if($(this).val()=="" || !RegExpression.test($(this).val()))
{
$(this).addClass('custom-error')
fnameflag = 0;
}
})
}
});
Demo
side note: since the above is a template for dynamically generated content, You should remove the id and use class instead since id should be unique in a document.
Following my code:
<script>
function getText(text){
alert(text);
}
</script>
<form action="getText(/*here function for get text*/)">
<input type="text" class="text"/>
<input type="submit"/>
<div></div>
</form>
How to get textarea value with pure javascript in the <form> where indicated?
The action attribute contains the URL that the form will be submitted to, not JavaScript.
If you want to process the form data with JavaScript, then bind a submit event handler to it. This will be fired in the context of the form, so you can access the form element via this.
You can access the form controls through the elements collection. They will have value properties containing their values.
<form action="/some/handler" id="myForm">
<textarea name="myTextArea" class="text"></textarea>
<input type="submit">
<div></div>
</form>
<script>
function getText(text){
alert(text);
}
function formSubmitHandler(evt) {
var textarea = this.elements.myTextArea;
getText(textarea.value);
}
document.getElementById('myForm').addEventListener('submit', formSubmitHandler);
</script>
You may wish to call evt.preventDefault() if you are going to handle the form processing entirely with JS (when JS is available).
If you want value from input without using selector, then you can use some thing like this,
but remember, the value your are getting from input tag should be used as a first child of form element.
<form action="">
<input type="text" class="text"/>
<input type="button" onclick="getText()" value="get value">
<div></div>
</form>
<script>
function getText(text){
var textValue = document.getElementsByTagName('input')[0].value;
alert(textValue);
}
</script>
EDIT
If you want the text from input value after pressed the enter key then you could do like this.
<form action="">
<input type="text" class="text" onkeydown="getText(event)"/>
<div></div>
</form>
<script>
function getText(event){
var textValue = document.getElementsByTagName('input')[0].value;
if(event.which == 13){
alert(textValue);
}
}
</script>
Here a little function for you
function getTextAreaByClass(lookFor) {
var i; /* I always define at the top so jslint doesn't carp */
var elems = document.getElementsByTagName("textarea");
for (i in elems) {
if((' '+elems[i].className+' ').indexOf(' '+lookFor+' ') > -1) {
return elems[i].innerHTML;
}
}
return ""; /* or return false or whatever else you want to denote not found */
}
The above will search through all the textarea tags, look for a class that matches and will return the content within the textarea.
I have a list of form elements that I want to loop over to get the values of, so if someone typed their name in the input i want their name, if they selected an option from a select box I want the not the numerical value but the string. All these values needs to be outputted as one string.
This is the loop i've created, I however have no idea how to go about this problem..
every form element has a name starting with credit_
if someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated..
$(this).parent().parent().find('[name*=credit_]').each(function( index ){
});
my html is quite simple.
<div class="comp-row">
<!-- a select -->
<!-- an input -->
</div>
This is part of the form, there are many other form fields but im only concerned with the ones within "comp-row" which Im manipulating a lot.
I ended up using:
$('.comp-row [name*="credit_"]:not([type=hidden])')
.each(function(index,elem)
{
console.log($(this).text() != '' ? $(this).find('option:selected').text().trim() : $(this).val());
});
}
Youre looking for the $('select[name*="credit_"]>option:selected') selector.
To read the text value for your , issue .text()
Combine this with if($('input[name*="credit_"]').text() != '') evaluation, combined something like this:
var theName = $('input[name*="credit_"]').text() != ''
? $('select[name*="credit_"]>option:selected').text()
: $('input[name*="credit_"]').text();
Depending on format you want you can use serialize() or serializeArray().
For example to obtain for whole form:
var data=$('#myForm').serialize()
For specific group of elements:
$('[name*=credit_]').serializeArray()
serialize() API docs
serializeArray() API docs
var result = '';
$(this).parent().parent().find('[name*=credit_]').each(function( index ){
result += $(this).is("select") ? $(this).text() : $(this).val();
});
Iterate over all elements that match your criteria (name*=credit_). Check its type and put the value inside a variable.
HTML
<form>
<input type="text" name="credit_a" value="1" />
<input type="text" name="credit_b" value="2" />
<input type="text" name="credit_c" value="3" />
<select name="credit_d">
<option value="kk">kk</option>
<option value="jj" selected>jjjjj</option>
</select>
<input name="credit_e type="checkbox" checked value="imchecked" />
</form>
<form>
<input type="text" name="credit_a" value="55" />
<input type="text" name="credit_b" value="66" />
<input type="text" name="credit_c" value="77" />
<input type="text" name="credit_d" value="88" />
</form>
<p id="result"> </p>
javascript
$(function() {
var values = '';
$('form [name*=credit_]').each(function() {
var $this = $(this);
if($this[0].tagName == 'TEXTAREA') {
values += ' ' + $this.text();
}
else if ($this[0].tagName == 'SELECT') {
values += ' ' + $this.find(':selected').text();
}
else {
values += ' ' + $this.val();
}
});
$('#result').html(values);
});
