jQuery - Submit Form to RESTful URL - javascript

My mind has gone 100% blank on this so need some guidance please.
<form action="/" id="searchForm">
<input type="text" name="s" placeholder="Search...">
<input type="submit" value="Search">
</form>
I need that form so the page redirects to a URL such as
http://example.com/rest/ful/url/{value of search}/ e.g. http://example.com/rest/ful/url/jQuery/ if I searched for jQuery
Do I even need jQuery for this?

Solution with jquery:
$('#searchForm').on('submit', function(event){
$('[name=s]').prop('disabled', true)
$(this).attr('action', 'http://example.com/rest/ful/url/' + $('[name=s]').val());
});
https://jsfiddle.net/3y4efht0/1/

Use .submit event of jquery and fetch the input value and use window.location.href to achieve your requirement.
Please check below snippet.
$("#searchForm").submit(function( event ) {
var searchTerm = $("input[name='s']").val();
if($.trim(searchTerm)!=""){
var redirectURL = "http://example.com/rest/ful/url/"+$.trim(searchTerm)+"/";
console.log(redirectURL);
window.location.href=redirectURL;
}else{
alert("Please enter search term!");
}
});
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<form action="/" id="searchForm">
<input type="text" name="s" placeholder="Search...">
<input type="submit" value="Search">
</form>

You don't need jquery to do that, but it can help, you have to listen for the submit event, prevent the default behaviour and redirect to the page you want :
$('#searchForm').on('submit', function(e){
e.preventDefault();
document.location.href = 'http://example.com/rest/ful/url/'+$('#s').val()+'/'
})

Why's my form action still being triggered when validating the form despite using e.preventDefault()?

I'd like to display a message above the name field if the user submits a name with a length greater than 20. This means the form will not get submitted - in other words, the form's action won't be triggered.
I've tried almost every suggestion I could find to prevent the form action from being triggered upon form validation but nothing seems to be working.
I've hit a wall with this and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. How can rectify this?
html:
<form method="POST" id="form" action="/post.php">
<span class="nameError"></span>
<input type="text" class="name" name="name" placeholder="Name" required/>
<input class="button" type="submit" value="Submit"/>
</form>
Here's my jquery:
let name = $('.name');
let nameError= $('.nameError');
$(document).ready(function() {
$('input[type=submit]').on('click', function(e) {
if (name.length > 20) {
e.preventDefault();
nameError.val("Too many characters!");
return false;
}
});
});
I have modified the logic for validation. Basically we need to capture the submit event for the form and use the correct jquery methods to retreive data based upon the selectors.
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#form").submit(function( event ) {
let name = $('.name').val();
let nameError= $('.nameError');
if (name.length > 20) {
nameError.text("Too many characters!");
event.preventDefault();
}
});
});
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.2.2/jquery.min.js"></script>
<form method="POST" id="form" action="/post.php">
<input type="text" class="name" name="name" placeholder="Name" required/>
<label class="nameError"></label> <br/>
<input class="button" type="submit" value="Submit"/>
</form>

fill and submit form using javascript from console

Here is my form:
<form id="myForm">
<input id="htmlString" type="text" name="htmlField" ><br>
<input type="Submit" value="Submit" >
</form>
And need to fill it from console.
just to use it in my app,
Will inject javascript with data to local html file.
I tried to make the form without a submit button like so:
<body>
<form id="myForm">
<input id="htmlString" type="text" name="htmlField" ><br>
</form>
<script>
htmlString.oninput = function(){
///do some stuff
}
</script>
</body>
Expecting that :
document.getElementById('htmlString').value="moo" ;
It automatically submit the form, because here oninput used.
But it just stayed filled with inputs and not proceed further.
Tried with other solution:
form = document.getElementById("myForm")
form.submit()
But it just refreshed the page and not submitted the form.
The need is just one filed without else, and inject my string to it with javascript to run functions embedded in the html.
Try making the input button hidden.
<body>
<form id="myForm">
<input id="htmlString" type="text" name="htmlField" ><br>
<input type="Submit" value="Submit" style="display: none" >
</form>
<button onclick="simulateConsole()">Try it</button>
<script>
htmlString.oninput = function(){
if(this.value === "moo") {
myForm.submit();
}
}
// This event will be triggered even if you use console
htmlString.onsubmit = function(){
if(this.value === "moo") {
// do something onSubmit
}
}
function simulateConsole() {
// you can simulate this in console
htmlString.value = "moo";
myForm.submit();
}
</script>
</body>
I hope it helps.
You need to supply an action to the form, otherwise it will just reload the page.

Please use POST resquest when sending form with JS

What i'm missing here to print 'user_input' to display paragraph ?
is myform.submit required? Because actually I can access the variable and make an alert with it..
<script language="JavaScript">
function getData(input) {
var input = document.getElementById("user_input").value;
// alert(input)
document.myform.submit()
$('.display').text("The URL is : " + input)
}
</script>
<script
src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.2.1.slim.js"
integrity="sha256-tA8y0XqiwnpwmOIl3SGAcFl2RvxHjA8qp0+1uCGmRmg="
crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
<form id="myform">
<label><b>Enter a URL</b></label>
<input type="text" name="message" id="user_input">
<input type="submit" id="submit" onclick="getData()"><br/>
<p id="display"><span></span></p>
</form>
Don't mix java-script/jQuery into each-other.
Since you are using jQuery library then do it in a better way like below:-
Working example:-
$(document).ready(function(){ // when document is rendered completely
$('#submit').click(function(e){ // on click of submit button
e.preventDefault(); // prevent the form submit
var input =$("#user_input").val(); // get input value
$('#display').text("The URL is : " + input); // add it as a text to paragraph
});
});
<script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.2.1.slim.js" integrity="sha256-tA8y0XqiwnpwmOIl3SGAcFl2RvxHjA8qp0+1uCGmRmg=" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
<form id="myform">
<label><b>Enter a URL</b></label>
<input type="text" name="message" id="user_input">
<input type="submit" id="submit"><br/><!-- no need of onclick-->
<p id="display"><span></span></p>
</form>
You must do what the response is actually asking you to do which simply is adding the method attribute to the form element: <form method="POST">

Submit Form With Both Action and Onsubmit Function

My JS is not that great so I have been fiddling with this for a while now.
I have a form which is being POST to another file when the submit button is clicked. When it is clicked I also want to show an alert then redirect the user back to a URL.
The redirecting code works just fine on a button where I call the function "onclick" like so:
<button onclick="test()">Return</button>
But I don't want to have an extra button for this...I want the form to POST then show an alert box then go to URL specified but I get not a function error from console, thanks.
<iframe name="noreloadhack" style="display:none;"></iframe>
<form action="http://www.example.com/test.php" onsubmit="return test();" method="post" target="noreloadhack">
JS:
<script>
function test() {
alert('Hello World');
var return_url = document.getElementById('return_url').value;
window.location.href= return_url;
}
</script>
If it makes a difference I have the form target set to a hidden iframe as a hack to not reload page on submit (I know, not the best method). I'm pretty much using 4 form attributes here.
I have some old code that I used to solve a similar situation. Where I wanted to submit a form but not reload the page, here it is. Since there were only 4 input fields I just grabbed the values using jquery.
Javascript:
function processForm() {
var teamMembers=new Array();
console.log($("#"));
var schoolName=$("#schoolname").val();
var teamMembers=new Array();
teamMembers.push($("#contestant1").val());
teamMembers.push($("#contestant2").val());
teamMembers.push($("#contestant3").val());
$.ajax({
method: "POST",
url: "php/register.php",
data: { schoolname: schoolName, teammembers:teamMembers.toString()}
})
.done(function( msg ) {
alert( "Your team is now registered " + msg );
$('#register').hide();
location.reload();
});
// You must return false to prevent the default form behavior
// default being reloading the page
return false;
}
HTML:
<form id="registration_form" onsubmit="return processForm()" method="POST">
<p style="margin:0px;">School Name:</p>
<input type="text" id="schoolname" name="schoolname" autocomplete="off" class="input" required>
<hr>
<p style="margin:0px;">Contestants</p>
<div id="teammembers">
<input type="text" id="contestant1" name="contestant1" autocomplete="off" class="input" required>
<p></p>
<input type="text" id="contestant2" name="contestant2" autocomplete="off" class="input" required>
<p></p>
<input type="text" id="contestant3" name="contestant3" autocomplete="off" class="input" required>
</div>
<input type="submit" id="registered">

Javascript Html button

I currently have a button in HTML with the following code:
<form id="tfnewsearch" method="get" >
<input type="text" id="search_query" name="q" size="21" maxlength="120"><input type="button" id="search_button" name="search" value = "Search"onclick="doSearch(this.form.q)">
</form>
The function 'doSearch()' works only if I click the submit button. What changes do I have to do if it has to work even if I just press the Enter key?
<form id="tfnewsearch" method="get" onsubmit="doSearch()" >
Simply change the onclick to an onsubmit and attach it to your form!
The proper way it to move it to simple JS script
<script type="text/javascript">
var form = document.querySelector('#tfnewsearch'),
query = form.querySelector('[name="q"]');
form.addEventListener('submit', function(){
doSearch(query.value);
});
</script>
