How to replace current page content on user input? - javascript

I am creating a search engine of sorts, using the Wikipedia API to query content. As it currently stands, the user can make a search input and the page returns the top 10 results with links and snippets. I run into difficulty when the user makes another search, in which case the page simply appends the original search results again. I have tried using replaceWith() and html(), but they either prevent the search results from coming through at all (if I put them within the event handler), or they don't get triggered (if they are outside the event handler). I am hoping to achieve a result where the user can make another input and the page will replace the current content with the new search results.
Here is what I have currently:
JS:
var results = [];
$("#search").on("keydown", "#searchinput", function(event) {
if (event.key === "Enter") {
var searchParameter = encodeURIComponent(this.value);
var link = "https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&search=" + searchParameter + "&limit=10&namespace=0&format=json&origin=*";
$.getJSON(link, function(data) {
for (var key in data) {
results.push(data[key]);
}
for (var i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
$("#results").append("<div class=\"resultContent\">" + "<h2>" + "" + results[1][i] + "" + "</h2>" + "<p>" + results[2][i] + "<br/>" + "</p>")
}
})
}
})
HTML:
Feeling Bold? Click Here for a Random Article
<div id="search">
<span>Search:</span>
<input type="text" id="searchinput" autocomplete="off"></input>
</div>
<div id="results"></div>
Thanks for the help!

You can remove the current results just before your loop:
$("#results").empty();
for (var i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
$("#results").append("<div class=\"resultContent\">" + "<h2>" + "" + results[1][i] + "" + "</h2>" + "<p>" + results[2][i] + "<br/>" + "</p>")
}

InnerHTML doesn't work - Advanced function

I'm beginner in JS. But, after many hours, i'm really close to the wanted result.
I declare my JS Function in head part
function getPrice(price) {
var tabPrice = price.split("");
var html = "";
var virguleIndex = null;
for (var index = 0; index < tabPrice.length; ++index) {
var priceNumber = tabPrice[index];
if (priceNumber == ',') {
virguleIndex = index;
html += "<span class='p-c'>" + priceNumber + "</span>";
} else if (priceNumber == '-') {
html += "<span class='p-d'>" + priceNumber + "</span>";
} else if (index > virguleIndex && virguleIndex != null) {
html += "<span class='p-" + priceNumber + " p-small'>" + priceNumber + "</span>";
} else {
html += "<span class='p-" + priceNumber + "'>" + priceNumber + "</span>";
}
}
var div = document.getElementsByClassName('price');
div[0].innerHTML = html;
}
and my div in body part
<div class="price"></div>
I made some test - And my function getPrice works perflectly
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2018/02/4/1515663887-functionwork.jpg
Some, the only fail (I think) is that the innerHTML don't work and don't write de var html content in div class price.
I haven't idea yet after many (many) hours of looking.
Can you help me ?
Thanks in advance,
Ludovic
By going through your image it is clear your DOM is not ready. So Please call your function inside this Block.
(function() {
// your page initialization code here
// the DOM will be available here
//Call Your function inside this block. it will work ex. getPrice("100");
})();
Some news (I worked on this few hours), I check for the dom charging. I tried (thank for you answer) the call function / transpose the code and the end / forcing the function after the dom loading (with document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", function(event) {)
Console log still working. But my div still empty :/
Thanks again !

Creating a list of students and assigning a function to each button

I am trying to allow clients to create a list of students then view more info by simply clicking on the button with the students name. I've got it to create the button and display the students name in the button but it only calls the function when I click submit to add the student to the list, the actual student button doesn't seem to function.
function updateStudentList() {
var html = "";
for (var i = 0; i < students.length; i++) {
html += "<li><button type='button' class='studentButton'" + "id=" + students[i].name +">" + students[i].name + "</button></li>";
}
$('#studentList').html(html);
for (var i = 0; i < students.length; i++) {
document.getElementById(students[i].name).addEventListener('click', openStudentInfo(students[i].name));
}
}
function openStudentInfo(studentName) {
console.log("Opening " + studentName + " info.");
var studentInfo = requestStudentByName(studentName);
if (studentInfo != null) {
var studentInfoForm = $("#studentInfoForm");
var html = "";
html += "<h3>Student Name: " + studentInfo.name + "</h3>";
html += "<h3>Student ID: " + studentInfo.studentID + "</h3>";
studentInfoForm.html(html);
$("#studentInfoModal").show();
}
}
HTML:
<ul data-role="listview" id="studentList"> </ul>
Note: I can't use the onclick tag in HTML, it causes security issues. Cordova also blocks this.
The way you binding the event is not ok. Try binding this way:
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#studentList").on("click", ".studentButton", function() {
var studentId = $(this).data("studentid");
openStudentInfo(studentId);
});
});
And in your HTML generation:
html += "<li><button type='button' class='studentButton' data-studentid='" + students[i].studentID +"'>" + students[i].name + "</button></li>";
This kind of event delagation works not metter how you create the elements inside the root element(studentList in this case), because the event was bound in it, and not on the dynamic elements.
no jquery version of DontVoteMeDown's answer
document.getElementById('studentList').addEventListener('click', function(event) {
var clickedEl = event.target;
if(clickedEl.className === 'studentButton') {
var studentId = clickedEl.dataset.studentId;
openStudentInfo(studentId);
}
});

why my for loop is infinite here

below is the js code for wikipedia search project. I am getting infinite for loop even though it had condition to stop repeating the loop. I am stuck in this problem.
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.enter').click(function() {
var srcv = $('#search').val(); //variable get the input value
//statement to check empty input
if (srcv == "") {
alert("enter something to search");
}
else {
$.getJSON('https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&search=' + srcv + '&format=json&limit=20&callback=?', function(json) {
$('.content').html("<p> <a href ='" + json[3][0] + "'target='_blank'>" + json[1][0] + "</a><br>" + json[2][0] + "</p>");
/*for loop to display the content of the json object*/
for (i = 1; i < 20; i++) {
$('p').append("<p><a href ='" + json[3][i] + "'target='_blank'>" + json[1][i] + "</a>" + json[2][i] + "</p>");
}
});
}
});
});
You are appending to each and every one of <p> in page.
Since your for loop appends even more <p> (and you possibly have a high number of <p> elements in your page beforehand) you overflow your call stack.
You probably wanted to append to a specific <p>. Try giving an id to your selector.
from what i can see in the url you need to do the following:
loop over the terms found and select the link based on the index of the element, chose a single element .contentto append the data not a set of elements p, this will increase the number of duplicated results
$.getJSON('https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&search='+srcv+'&format=json&limit=20&callback=?', function(json){
$.each(json[1],function(i,v){
$('.content').append("<p><a href ='"+json[2][i]+"'target='_blank'>"+json[0]+"</a>"+v+"</p>");
});
});
see demo: https://jsfiddle.net/x79zzp5a/
Try this
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.enter').click(function() {
var srcv = $('#search').val(); //variable get the input value
//statement to check empty input
if (srcv == "") {
alert("enter something to search");
}
else {
$.getJSON('https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&search=' + srcv + '&format=json&limit=20&callback=?', function(json) {
$('.content').html("<p> <a href ='" + json[3][0] + "'target='_blank'>" + json[1][0] + "</a><br>" + json[2][0] + "</p>");
/*for loop to display the content of the json object*/
var i = 1;
for (i; i < 20; i++) {
$('p').append("<p><a href ='" + json[3][i] + "'target='_blank'>" + json[1][i] + "</a>" + json[2][i] + "</p>");
}
});
}
});
});

modifying value of input text box after clicking on a check box

I have a function where I read the the text input value and update a counter which is displayed in another div. In some cases I show a check box along with text input field. At the moment when user select the check box the amount which is entered in the text input field is doubled and the result is showing in the counter correctly.
What am I trying to achieve id when the user select the check box the input field should be doubled along with the counter.
The text input in the betslip is added dynamically. So there might be more individual betlsips with check boxes in the view.
Here is my code (HTML view is generated dynamically through JS)
BetSlip.prototype.createSingleBetDiv = function(divId, Bet, winPlaceEnabled) {
document.betSlip.setSingleCount($('[name=singleBet]').length);
var id = divId.replace('_div','');
// If such bet already exists
if (!document.betSlip.singleDivExists(divId) && document.betSlip.getSingleCount() < maxNumberInBetslipRacing) {
var singleBetPosition = (Bet.position == null) ? '' : Bet.position;
var raceInfo = Bet.categoryName + ', ' + raceFullName + ' ' + Bet.name + ', ' + Bet.betTypeName + ' (' + Bet.value.toFixed(2) + ')';
var div = $('<div name="singleBet" class="bet gray2" id="' + divId + '"/>')
// Appending div with data
.data('Bet', Bet)
// Appending error element
$(div).append($('<p id="' + divId + '_error" style="display:none;"/>')
.addClass('alert alert-danger alert-dismissable'))
// Appending info element
$(div).append($('<p id="' + divId + '_info" style="display:none;"/>')
.addClass('alert alert-success alert-dismissable'))
var bgDiv = $('<div id="bgDiv"/>').appendTo(div)
// Append left part
var productName = (Bet.productName != null) ? getBrandBetName(Bet.productName) : Bet.betTypeName;
var leftDiv = $('<div class="left"/>')
.appendTo(div)
// Info abt the bet
.append($('<p class="title"><b>' + singleBetPosition + ' ' + Bet.horseName + '</b><span style="float:right">' + productName + '</span></p>'))
.append($('<p class="title">' + raceInfo + '</p>'))
.append($('<p/>')
.addClass('supermid')
// Creating input field
.append($('<input type="text" id="' + id + '_input"/>')
.keypress(function(event) {validateInputs(event, 'decimal')})
.keyup(function() {document.betSlip.updateSinglesTotalPrice()})))
// Creating WIN / PLACE checkbox selection
if (winPlaceEnabled) {
$(leftDiv).append($('<p><input name="winPlaceCheckBox" id="' + id + '_checkbox\" type="checkbox"><b>' + winPlace + '</b></p>')
.click(function() {document.betSlip.updateSinglesTotalPrice()}))
}
// Append Done and Reuse btns
$(leftDiv).append($('<a id="reuseBtn" class="button confirm gray reuse" style="display: none;"/>').html(reuse).click(function() {document.betSlip.reuseBet(divId)}))
$(leftDiv).append($('<a id="doneBtn" class="button confirm red donebtn" style="display: none"/>').html(done)
.click(function(){$('#' + divId).find('a.right.orange').click()}))
// Append right part
$(div).append($('<a class="right orange"/>')
.click(function() {
document.betSlip.removeSingleBetDiv(divId);
})
// Closing btn
.append($('<div class="icon_shut_bet"/>')))
// Add div to the bet slip map
document.betSlip.addSingleDiv(divId, div);
return div;
}
else {
if(this.getSingleCount() < maxNumberInBetslipRacing){
$("#betSlipError").show();
$("#betSlipError").html(sameBet);
return null;
}
else{
$("#betSlipError").show();
$("#betSlipError").html(maxBet);
return null;
}
}
}
In the win/place check box I am calling a function which take cares of updating the final price in the counter (Total bet). I would like to update the same in the input text field as well (double up the input value). In case check box is deselected the input amount should be half (both in input field as well as in the counter).
Function which updated the total bet value
BetSlip.prototype.updateSinglesTotalPrice = function() {
var totalBet = 0;
$('[name=singleBet]').each(function() {
var inputValue = $(this).find('input:text').val();
// Win / Place
if (document.betSlip.checkWinPlace(this)) totalBet += Number(inputValue * 2);
// Win or Place
else totalBet += Number(inputValue);
});
$("#betSinglesTotalBet").html(replaceParams(totBetPrice, [totalBet.toFixed(2), document.betSlip.getCurrency()]));
}

JavaScript variable empty without previous alert messge

I'm using the following function to create a list of links from a JSON-File and put them into a span element (jquery has been initialized)
$(document).ready(function() {
function createjson(category) {
var content = "";
i = 0;
$.getJSON(category + ".txt", function(data){
while(data[i] != null) {
content = content + '<li class="liste"><a target="_blank" class="liste" href="' + data[i].url + '">' + data[i].name + '</a></li>';
i++;
}
});
document.getElementById("list_" + category).innerHTML = content;
}
createjson("cat1");
});
However, if I use it like this, the span element remains empty. It is only when I replace
document.getElementById("list_" + category).innerHTML = content;
with
alert("test");
document.getElementById("list_" + category).innerHTML = content;
that I get the desired output. How can I get it without printing out an alert message beforehand?
That is becuase .getJSON() is an asynchronous method. Your code will try to update the DOM with content, before the server had time to respond to the request. Therefor no content is inserted.
With the alert, you stop the execution long enough for the server to respond, therefor it works when you add the alert.
The correct way to do it would be to move your content update into the success-callback instead, which is always run after the server has responded:
$.getJSON(category + ".txt", function(data){
while(data[i] != null) {
content = content + '<li class="liste"><a target="_blank" class="liste" href="' + data[i].url + '">' + data[i].name + '</a></li>';
i++;
}
$("#list_" + category).html(content);
});
I replaced your document.getElementById("list_" + category).innerHTML = content; with the somewhat shorter jQuery equivalent $("#list_" + category).html(content); in the above example as well.
It's not the alert which is fixing this, the alert is basically blocking the UI for long enough for the AJAX request to complete.
$.getJSON is an asyncronous method. This means that the result of the function call is not always available immediately, you'll need to move your code which sets the list element HTML inside the $.getJSON callback:
$.getJSON(category + ".txt", function (data) {
while(data[i] != null) { ... }
document.getElementById("list_" + category).innerHTML = content;
});
Put the html append in callback, also reset the i when call back starts.
$(document).ready(function() {
function createjson(category) {
$.getJSON(category + ".txt", function(data)
{
var content = "";
for(i=0; i<data.length; i++)
{
content = content + '<li class="liste"><a target="_blank" class="liste" href="' + data[i].url + '">' + data[i].name + '</a></li>';
}
document.getElementById("list_" + category).innerHTML = content;
});
}
createjson("cat1");
});
Use this !== to compare with not equal to NULL
while(data[i] !== null) {
content = content + '<li class="liste"><a target="_blank" class="liste" href="' + data[i].url + '">' + data[i].name + '</a></li>';
i++;
}
