FAQ page shows answers automatically - javascript

I'm trying to create a drop down FAQ page with jQuery and for some reason the answers are showing when I load the page.
I have my jQuery script on my page
<script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-2.1.4.min.js"></script>
And my javascript page:
<script src="js/threecatsdesign.js"></script>
My full javascript is this:
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#categories h3").click(
function() {
$(this).toggleClass("minus");
if ($(this).attr("class") != "minus") {
$(this).next().hide();
}
else {
$(this).next().show();
}
$("#image").attr("src", "");
// needed for IE so a placeholder isn't displayed for the image
$("#image").attr("style", "display:none;"); }
); // end click
}); // end ready
My HTML is this code:
<main id="categories">
<h3>What is this site about?</h3>
<div>
<ul id="web_images">
<li>We are a website that holds Photoshop lessons called tutorials. Please read our about me page for more information.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<h3>If you hold contests on the site, how do I enter?</h3>
<div>
<ul id="java_images">
<li>Go to our page called contests in the nav bar and you will need to fill out the form in order to enter.</li>
</ul>
</div><p>
<h3>I have a tutorial I would like to suggest or put up my own. How do I do that?</h3>
<div>
<ul id="net_images">
<li>Please go fill out our contact form and you will be contaced with 24 hours or less on how to proceed.</li>
</ul>
</div>

You need to add some css to hide the questions to begin with.
<style>
.faq-question div {
display:none;
}
</style>
I suggest putting this in a different file, but inline styles like this work for a quick and dirty solution.
You also should wrap each question and answer in a tag like this
<div class="faq-question">
<h3>What is this site about?</h3>
<div>
<ul id="web_images">
<li>We are a website that holds Photoshop lessons called tutorials. Please read our about me page for more information.</li>
</ul>
</div>
</div>
And change your JS to reflect the change in elements.
$(".faq-question").click(

Javascript load content into Div problems

I am trying to on the click of a link display a different page inside a box using jquery (.load). I'm new to programming and web design so please make answers as simple as possible.
Here is my index.html code
<nav id="navBar">
Home
About
Contact
Shop
</nav>
<div id="loadZone"></div>
and my JavaScript
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#loadZone").load("homeLoad.html");
});
function homeLoad() {
$('#loadZone').load('homeLoad.html');
}
function aboutLoad() {
$('#loadZone').load('aboutLoad.html');
}
loading the home page (homeLoad.html) works fine
when I repeatedly spam the link for about you can occasionally see the content of aboutLoad.html
Any help appreciated
Thanks
A simpler method might be to store the urls as data attributes on the links, then when the user clicks a link get the stored url and load it. To load the initial content, trigger a click on it's link on load. Something like this would work:
Here is a working Demo
<nav id="navBar">
Home
About
Contact
Shop
</nav>
<div id="loadZone"></div>
<script>
$(document).ready(function(){
$('.navLink').click(function(e){
e.preventDefault;
$('#loadZone').load($(this).data('url'));
});
$('.navLink:eq(0)').click();
});
</script>

HTML + jquery - menu to change contents in the content DIV

I've been digging around on how to do it, but didn't find any solution which would fulfill my needs.
Got a basic layout of my page with menu on the left, separate div for header and a div in the middle where all the content should be displayed when one of the menu buttons is selected.
I'd like to change the content only of the "content" div dynamically without reloading the page when one of the menu buttons is pressed.
I've managed to do it as per below with jquery:
<script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8">
$(document).ready(function(){
$('#nav ul li a').click(function(){
$('#main').load('contents.html #' + $(this).attr('href'));
return false;
});
});
The menu :
<nav id="nav">
<ul class="menu">
<li class="menu1"></li>
<li class="menu2"></li>
<li class="menu3"></li>
<li class="menu4"></li>
<li class="menu5"></li>
</ul>
</div>
</nav>
contents.html file sample:
<div id="menu1">
<h2>Menu1</h2>
<p>Menu1 page contents</p>
</div>
So when menu1 button is pressed I'm able to change the content of main div to reflect the relevant data - this works.
My questions are:
1) is this the correct way on how to do it ? If not what would you recommend ?
2)I want to display more advanced stuff not only text (e.g What if I want to have another jquery in the div-id="menu1" ? I've tried it and it didn't work.)
P.S - I'm just a beginner so maybe I've missed something basic - but couldn't fix it by myself.
Thanks in advance!
Peter
I think there are a number of ways to achieve what you want. It depends on the nature of the content you want to load.
If there isn't masses of it, you could load it all onto the page on page load within different div's and then just show and hide the relevant div when clicking the menu items. (have a look at twitter bootstrap for some implementations, things like tabbed browsing).
If you do just have text, you could use ajax to load in the data from an external file w3schools.com.
Alternatively as mentioned in a comment above, you could create a single page application using something like angular.js, knockout.js etc.
Hope that helps.

How to run javascript code on menu click

I'm creating a squarespace website in which I have a navigation bar.
I would like to add a javascript code as a link in the navigation bar.
The javascript code is the following:
<div>
<script type="text/javascript" src="https://app.ecwid.com/script.js?4549118"></script>
<script type="text/javascript"> xMinicart("style=","layout=Mini"); </script>
</div>
I have the following html code: (I got it with FireBug)
<nav id="main-navigation">
<ul class="cf">
<li class=" active-link">
page1
</li>
<li class="">
page2
</li>
</ul>
</nav>
I cannot edit the code above but I'm able to inject header code.
So, how can I add the javascript code as a third link in the navigation bar?
Thanks a lot!
edit
So I've added the following code
<script>
window.onload=function(){
$('nav ul').append('<li><a onClick="test()" href="javascript:void(0);">Link 3</a></li>');
}
</script>
but I need the original javascript code within the append. I need the actual code to be the link. How do I do that? If you see the javascript in Firefox you'll understand what I mean. I need the actual link it generates in the navigation bar.
Thanks!
window.onload=function(){
$('nav ul').append('<li><a onClick="yourFunction()" href="javascript:void(0);">Link 3</a></li>');
}
Since you specify you don't have direct access to the html. Only the header.
This will add your menu item with a link, that upon click, executes the function yourFunction(). It will add this item as soon as the page loads.
Note: You need jQuery for the above. But it is also possible with raw Js.

YUI menu change page content not whole page

I have divided html page into :
<body>
<div class="menu_container">
<!-- added menu here -->
</div>
<div class="content">
<!-- body content here -->
</div>
</body>
I want to change the content of "content" div when I select menu item.
ie depending on menu item selection div content should change, like what happens in Tabviews.
How can I do so?
The latest versions of YUI include the concept of Pjax which uses History and Ajax to update the page. It's really easy to set up and it'll keep your URLs working. Check out the User Guide: http://yuilibrary.com/yui/docs/pjax/.
You only need to add the yui3-pjax class to each menu that updates the page, apply the Menu plugin, plug the Pjax plugin and have your server return the right HTML content.
<div id="menu-1" class="yui3-menu">
<div class="yui3-menu-content">
<ul>
<li class="yui3-menuitem">
<a class="yui3-menuitem-content yui3-pjax" href="/some-page.html">Some page</a>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
</div>
<div id="content">
<!-- here goes the page content -->
</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
YUI().use('node-menunav', 'pjax-plugin', function (Y) {
Y.one('#menu-1').plug(Y.Plugin.NodeMenuNav);
Y.one('#content').plug(Y.Plugin.Pjax);
});
</script>
This should do the trick:
Y.one('.menu_container').on('click', function(e) {
Y.one('.content').setHTML("<h1>Hello, <em>World</em>!</h1>");
});
Depending on the selector used instead of menu_container, you can update the content accordingly.
EDIT: In fact, delegate is probably better for your needs:
Y.one('.menu_container').delegate('click', onClick, '.menu-item');

How to show the description of the elements that are listed on the sidebar on the body using show & hide javascript or JQuery?

I have 11 elements with long description of each element of them. I decided to display the elements on the sidebar and the description of each one of them will be displayed on the body directly when the user clicks on the element.
I came with a solution similar to this ONE
but the problem with this one is put the content (or description) inside the javascript code, and I want the description be on the HTML code to make it later on flexible for changes by the admin after putting the data including the description of these elements on the database instead of hard-coded style.
Therefore, how can I do that?
You can try this way
<div id="menu">
<ul>
<li id="a">item a
<div id="contentA" style="display:none">Description of item A</div>
</li>
<li id="b">item b
<div id="contentB" style="display:none">Description of item A</div>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div id="content"></div>
<script type="text/javascrip">
$(document).ready( function () {
$('#a').click(function() {
$('#content').html($('#contentA').html());
});
$('#b').click(function() {
$('#content').html($('#contentB').html());
});
});
<script>
I updated your example, it now uses hidden divs inside the clickable menu items, and on li click it finds the menu description and displays it.
This method does not depend on ids and degrades more gracefully (except if the client doesn't support JS but supports CSS display).
Your description is a bit unprecise, but if I get it right your could use IDs for the description text and fade them in/out with jQuery.
