Apply shadow on different drawings in canvas - javascript

When I apply the shadow effect to the Sun variable, it automatically applies to the Neptune one as well. I don't want this. Do I give ctx a different name to fix this or does the issue lie somewhere else?
I've been told to keep just one context reference, so I'm terribly confused. I feel I need to shuffle some lines around to be able to give each variable unique properties.

I only found 2 issues, and that was that you were setting it globally and you had the shadow AFTER you created the sun. You can move it wherever you'd like, but if you wanted it applied to your "Sun", then it would be best done like this.
The way I've found best to stop that problem is by wrapping my change code in save() and restore() functions. Like this:

Keep one context, yes, but you have to bear in mind that any properties you set on the drawing context, will be remembered for future draw operations. There's a couple of ways round this.
a) ensure that you always set the desired properties prior to any draw operations. Especially ones that may have been overwritten by another object's draw operations.
b) Use context.save() and context.restore(). You can save the state of the context, make changes, do your draw operations and then restore back to its previous state, ready for the next draw operation, ensuring that you have not messed about with any other draw properties for other objects.

HTML Canvas Interval, CanvasPattern dissapears

When creating an HTML canvas I was planning on making these cylinders and animating marbles moving inside them. However, when trying to do so it would just delete everything. After messing around with my code, I discovered the problem was due to the fillStyle which was a CanvasPattern from an image.
This snippet simulates exactly what I am experiencing. The rectangle draws perfectly fine, however, after 1 second, when the interval runs, it disappears and there is no arc or "marble" drawn. There are no errors in console either

When I get rid of the interval it would work, but when the interval is there, nothing is drawn.
I have absolutely no idea why this is happening and I cannot find anything on the internet regarding this problem. Is there a way I can animate this marble while having the image continue to mask its fillStyle??

Things I've tried:
Got rid of beginPath and closePath, doesn't make anything disappear but doesn't display arc
Recreating pattern inside the interval
Making the fillstyle a colour for everything (Works)
Making the fillstyle of the marble a colour (Doesnt work)
EDIT: After looking some more, I believe the problem is in the globalCompositeOperation. It's what deals with the pattern intersecting the drawing. When looking at all the types, source-in is the only one that satisfies my expected result, however, it's not working in this situation weirdly.

The problem is your ctx.globalCompositeOperation instruction. Using source-in, you're explicitly telling the canvas to make anything that's a different color from the new thing you're drawing (on a per pixel basis) transparent. Since every pixel is different, everything becomes transparent and you're left with what looks like an empty canvas (even if the ImageData will show RGBA data in which the RGB channels have meaningful content, but A is 0).
Remove the globalCompositeOperation rule and you're good to go, but you should probably take some time to rewrite the logic here, so that nothing happens until your image is loaded, because your code is pretty dependent on that pattern existing: wait for the image to load, the build the pattern, assign it to the context, and then start your draw loop.

Although on another note, normally setInterval is not the best choice for animations: you usually want requestAnimationFrame instead, with a "wall time" check (e.g. doing things depending on the actual clock, instead of trusting intervals):

HTML 5 Canvas - Rotate multiple objects around own origin

I'm trying to create a JavaScript object that has a method which allows a rectangle to rotate around its own origin during a rAF callback.
Things I have done:
Calculating the origin of an object within the canvas space.
Using ctx.save() and ctx.restore() - this is where my issues arise.
When I use the save() and restore() methods to push and pop the saved states within method calls for different objects it either doesn't change anything, or stops the entire animation.
The rotation in my example appears to be applied globally to the canvas (which is how the functionality is specified on MDN). I'm trying to translate around origin around multiple instances. I've spent hours on this.
Is there something going on with the inheritance mechanism in JavaScript that's not resetting my transforms for different instances of the rectangle objects in the code example?

I have tried rotating multiple rectangles around their own origin at different positions without animation using save() and restore() - which worked.
Additionally, I have tried moving the rotate method inside of the draw method and the results were the same. My rationale was that the rotation would be applied as a function call within draw() - the rationale was clearly wrong.
Any insight towards a solution would be greatly helpful. I have included a link to the pen on codepen to see the concept in motion.
Instead of drawing the rects at (this.x, this.y) you may draw them at 0,0 and translate them to (this.x, this.y);

How to (re)fill circle in canvas - requestAnimationFrame - HTML, JS

how can I fill the "new" canvas circle that appears next to the older one.

The fillRect() will fill directly to the canvas without going via a path (versus for example rect()).
The arc() on the other hand will add to a path which needs to be filled later. It also require the path to be cleared in-between the calls using beginPath().
A simple way to think about it is to wrap the necessary code into a function that acts like fillRect():

Canvas shadow properties affect all subsequent paths

Canvas shadow properties seem to affect all paths that follow it, even when closing the path that contains those properties. I tried changing the order of things. Ok, placing a path that doesnt require a shadow before the one that does works, but that isnt very reliable work-around. Is there any way to fix this?

you can reset the shadowBlur property with ctx.shadowBlur = 0; or ctx.shadowBlur = null;

As others have said doing a reset will work - also you can do .save() which will save the canvas state, you will need to restore as well...

Issue on Drawing Multiple Circles on HTML5 Canvas

Can you please take a look at this demo and let me know how I can draw multiple circles in a canvas with different coordinate without repeating bunch of codes?

Constantly creating and closing new paths is not good advice.
You should batch together all fills / strokes of the same style, and execute them in a single draw call. The performance difference between these approaches becomes apparent very quickly with increasing polygon count.
The way to go about it is to move the pen and make the path construction call for each circle; stroke/fill in the end in one shot. However, there's a quirk involved here. When you have the point moved to the center and draw the circle, you'd still see a horizontal radius line, drawn from the center of the circle, to the circumference.
To avoid this artefact, instead of moving to the center, we move to the circumference. This skips the radius drawing. Essentially all these commands are for tracing a path and there's no way to describe a discontinuity without calling closePath; usually moveTo does it but HTML5 canvas API it doesn't. This is a simple workaround to counter that.

Also worth considering, is using transformations, and drawing everything relative to a local frame of reference.

This is because you are not closing the path, either using fill() or closePath() will close the path so it does not try and connect all the items. fill() fills in the circles and closes the path so we can just use that. Also you need to use beginPath(), so that they are separate from each other. Here is your three circles:

To not repeat a bunch of code and have unique coordinates store your X and Y position in an array and use a for loop to go through it.

A more efficient way to do which achieves the same effect this would be to only use a single path and use moveTo() instead of creating a new path when drawing each circle:

You can easily create several circles with a for loop. You really just need to draw an arc and fill it each time. Using your example, you could do something like this.
