Hi guys so basically i am trying to add data in a nutrtion label which i built. So the label it self has everything from fat, carbs , protein etc. Now i have set up a database with:
ingName: ...
fat: ...
Carbs: ....
etc etc
So right now i am just trying to get it to work for fat. Once i do this i can easily do the others. I can search through the database easily.When the user presses Add button it will add the ingredient below the search box and then change the content of fat. However if the user adds anther record the fat content wont add up together.
So for example i have Banana which has 4 fat and apple which has 1 fat. I add apple first and the fat content changes to 1 fat. When i add banana it should become 5 fat, however it will actually go to 4. So the records are not being added up correctly.
Js:
else{
var searchedValue = $('#search_term').val();
var temp2 = 0;
$.post( 'build.php', { 'search_term':searchedValue, 'current_fat':temp2 }, function(data) {
$('.result').html( data );
});
temp = $("#fat").text();
temp = parseInt(temp);
current_fat += temp2;
current_fat += temp;
console.log(temp + " " + temp2 + " " + current_fat);
$("#fat").text(current_fat);
The part which is causing the problem is in the else loop, i cant seem to figure out how to fix it,
If you need the php file i can get you that, but it seems to be in the else loop in the js file but i cant seem to figure out how to fix it. Been about a week i have been stuck on this mental problem :)
Thanks anyway for the help x
Try this:
$('#addButton').on('click', function( event ) {
//your other stuff
var searchedValue = $('#search_term').val();
//remove this : var temp2 = 0;
//add this:
temp = $("#fat").text();
temp = parseInt(temp);
//change your post reg to:
$.post( 'build.php', { 'search_term':searchedValue, 'current_fat':temp }, function(data) {
$('.result').html( data );
});
//rest of your code...

I apologize in advance, this is the first Stack Overflow question I've posted. I was tasked with creating a new ADA compliant website for my school district's technology helpdesk. I started with minimal knowledge of HTML and have been teaching myself through w3cschools. So here's my ordeal:
I need to create a page for all of our pdf and html guides. I'm trying to create a somewhat interactable menu that is very simple and will populate a link array from an onclick event, but the title="" text attribute drops everything after the first space and I've unsuccessfully tried using a replace() method since it's coming from an array and not static text.
I know I'm probably supposed to use an example, but my work day is coming to a close soon and I wanted to get this posted so I just copied a bit of my actual code.
So here's what's happening, in example 1 of var gmaildocAlt the tooltip will drop everything after Google, but will show the entire string properly with example 2. I was hoping to create a form input for the other helpdesk personnel to add links without knowing how to code, but was unable to resolve the issue of example 1 with a
var fix = gmaildocAlt.replace(/ /g, "&nb sp;")
//minus the space
//this also happens to break the entire function if I set it below the rest of the other variables
I'm sure there are a vast number of things I'm doing wrong, but I would really appreciate the smallest tip to make my tooltip display properly without requiring a replace method.
// GMAIL----------------------------
function gmailArray() {
var gmaildocLink = ['link1', 'link2'];
var gmaildocTitle = ["title1", "title2"];
var gmaildocAlt = ["Google Cheat Sheet For Gmail", "Google 10-Minute Training For Gmail"];
var gmailvidLink = [];
var gmailvidTitle = [];
var gmailvidAlt = [];
if (document.getElementById("gmailList").innerHTML == "") {
for (i = 0; i < gmaildocTitle.length; i++) {
arrayGmail = "" + gmaildocTitle[i] + "" + "<br>";
document.getElementById("gmailList").innerHTML += arrayGmail;
}
for (i = 0; i < gmailvidTitle.length; i++) {
arrayGmail1 = "";
document.getElementById("").innerHTML += arrayGmail1;
}
} else {
document.getElementById("gmailList").innerHTML = "";
}
}
<div class="fixed1">
<p id="gmail" onclick="gmailArray()" class="gl">Gmail</p>
<ul id="gmailList"></ul>
<p id="calendar" onclick="calendarArray()" class="gl">Calendar</p>
<ul id="calendarList"></ul>
</div>
Building HTML manually with strings can cause issues like this. It's better to build them one step at a time, and let the framework handle quoting and special characters - if you're using jQuery, it could be:
var $link = jQuery("<a></a>")
.attr("href", gmaildocLink[i])
.attr("title", gmaildocAlt[i])
.html(gmaildocTitle[i]);
jQuery("#gmailList").append($link).append("<br>");
Without jQuery, something like:
var link = document.createElement("a");
link.setAttribute("href", gmaildocLink[i]);
link.setAttribute("title", gmaildocAlt[i]);
link.innerHTML = gmaildocTitle[i];
document.getElementById("gmailList").innerHTML += link.outerHTML + "<br>";
If it matters to your audience, setAttribute doesn't work in IE7, and you have to access the attributes as properties of the element: link.href = "something";.
If you add ' to either side of the variable strings then it will ensure that the whole value is read as a single string. Initially, it was assuming that the space was exiting the Title attribute.
Hope the below helps!
UPDATE: If you're worried about using apostrophes in the title strings, you can use " by escaping them using a . This forces JS to read it as a character and not as part of the code structure. See the example below.
Thanks for pointing this one out guys! Sloppy code on my part.
// GMAIL----------------------------
function gmailArray() {
var gmaildocLink = ['link1', 'link2'];
var gmaildocTitle = ["title1", "title2"];
var gmaildocAlt = ["Google's Cheat Sheet For Gmail", "Google 10-Minute Training For Gmail"];
var gmailvidLink = [];
var gmailvidTitle = [];
var gmailvidAlt = [];
if (document.getElementById("gmailList").innerHTML == "") {
for (i = 0; i < gmaildocTitle.length; i++) {
var arrayGmail = "" + gmaildocTitle[i] + "" + "<br>";
document.getElementById("gmailList").innerHTML += arrayGmail;
}
for (var i = 0; i < gmailvidTitle.length; i++) {
var arrayGmail1 = "";
document.getElementById("").innerHTML += arrayGmail1;
}
} else {
document.getElementById("gmailList").innerHTML = "";
}
}
<div class="fixed1">

I have been trying to debug for this days now, and I’m not sure what the problem is.
To give you a little background:
I'm working on a project that pulls the top headline on the politics section of a far left news source (Huffington Post), a moderate left (CNN), a moderate right (Fox), and a far right (Breitbart).
From here, I’m finding Reddit posts referencing that article and appending it to the html. All of this is being done through YQL.
Here's an example with how I'm using CNN.
//CNN
$(function getCNNNews() {
var statement = "select * from feed where url='http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_allpolitics.rss'";
$.queryYQL(statement, "json", undefined, function (data) {
// do something with "data".
console.log(data.query.results.item);
//Get first object in array
console.log(data.query.results.item[0]);
var firstObjectCNN = data.query.results.item[0];
$("#col2").append("<h1 id='cnn'>" + firstObjectCNN.title + "</h1>");
$("#col2").append("<h4 id='cnn'> Published by CNN <br/>" + firstObjectCNN.pubDate + "</h4>");
//Search for the top post referencing that headline on Reddit
$(function getCNNPostReddit() {
var newStatement = encodeURIComponent(firstObjectCNN.title).replace(/'/g , "%27");
var statement = "select * from feed where url='https://www.reddit.com/search.xml?q=" + newStatement + "&sort=new'";
$.queryYQL(statement, "json", undefined, function (data) {
console.log(statement);
console.log(data);
var firstCNNEntryResults = data.query.results;
if (firstCNNEntryResults == null)
{
document.getElementById("loading2").style.display = 'inline-block';
}
else
{
// Get first entry's (which is the entry with the most comments) rss feed containing comments
var firstCNNEntry = data.query.results.entry[0];
console.log("select * from feed where url='" + firstCNNEntry.link.href + ".rss");
// Erase end of URL that's not needed
var firstCNNEntryLink = firstCNNEntry.link.href;
firstCNNEntryLink = firstCNNEntryLink.substring(0, firstCNNEntryLink.indexOf('?'));
console.log(firstCNNEntryLink);
//Create a dynamic rss feed based on link to first entry; this is where the comments will come from.
$(function getCNNRedditComments() {
var statement = "select * from feed where url='" + firstCNNEntryLink + ".rss'" ;
$.queryYQL(statement, "json", undefined, function (data) {
console.log(data.query.results.entry);
//Start with the 4th comment; since the first 3 comments are auto moderator
for (var i = 0; i < data.query.results.entry.length; i++) {
console.log(data.query.results.entry[i].content.content);
$("#col2 #comment-box").append("<div id='comment'><span id='username'>" + data.query.results.entry[i].author.name + "</span>" + ":" + data.query.results.entry[i].content.content + "</div>")
}
});
});
}
});
});
});
});
I've made it so when the results come out null, I replace the comments with a loading symbol. The issue I'm having is, sometimes the comments will show, and other times they won't.
The current state of the site is here:
leftright.info
Reddit has a limit to how often you can fetch their RSS feeds. I had that problem too, so I came up with a workaround. I've created a public tool for it on my website.
https://burkybang.com/reddit_rss
what i aim to do is a very simple currency converter. Basically, you type in a number, and press a button, a text is displayed that says "x dollars is y euros". Press the button again, a new text is displayed where the old one was, and the old one is displayed under the new one.
I've come so far that when something is entered in the field, it pops up below, and if you press the button again (with the same or a different value) it becomes a list of text.
To clarify what it is i'm saying here, take a look at this jsfiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/w8KAS/5/
Now i want to make it so that only numbers work, and so that number(x) is converted when the button is pressed and displayed below next to some fitting text (like "x dollars is y euros")
This is my js code, check the jsfiddle full code (html, js, css)
Any suggestions?
var count = 0;
function validate() {
var amount = document.querySelector("#amount");
if(amount.value.length > 0) {
amount.className = 'correct';
}
else {
amount.className = 'empty';
}
if (document.querySelector('.empty')) {
alert('Något är fel');
}
else {
addconvert(amount.value);
}
}
function addconvert(amount) {
var table = document.querySelector('#tbody');
var tr = document.createElement('tr');
var amountTd = document.createElement('td');
var amountTextNode = document.createTextNode(amount);
amountTd.appendChild(amountTextNode)
tr.appendChild(amountTd);
table.insertBefore(tr, table.firstChild);
count++;
}
var button = document.querySelector(".button");
button.onclick = validate;
Your number validation is failing. Change the first part of your validation to this:
function validate() {
var amount = document.querySelector("#amount");
var amountNum = parseFloat(amount.value); //This is the numeric value, use it for calculations
if(amount.value.length > 0 && !isNaN(amountNum) ) {
amount.className = 'correct';
amount.value = amountNum;
}
...
Working here: http://jsfiddle.net/edgarinvillegas/w8KAS/6/
Cheers
You need a conversion rate (there are APIs for that), and then you can just add them together in a string
var convRate = 1.3;
var amountTextNode = document.createTextNode(amount + " dollars is " + amount*convRate + " euros");
Regarding the API, Yahoo will tell you what you need without even the need to sign-in
$.ajax({
url: "http://query.yahooapis.com/v1/public/yql?q=select%20*%20from%20yahoo.finance.xchange%20where%20pair%20in%20(%22USDEUR%22)&format=json&diagnostics=true&env=store%3A%2F%2Fdatatables.org%2Falltableswithkeys&callback="
}).done(function(data) {
convRate = data.query.results.rate.Rate
});
To make sure that only numbers work, you can test the variable amount.value using the isNaN function. This will return true if the user's input is Not-a-Number, so if it returns false, you can proceed with your conversion.
if (!isNaN(amount.value)){
addconvert(+amount.value) // the plus symbol converts to a number
} else {
// display error here
}
Inside your addconvert function, you can add code to will multiply your input amount by an exchange rate to get a rough conversion.
function addconvert(){
// ...
var euros = 0.74 * amount
var text = amount + ' dollars is ' + euros + ' euros'
var amountTextNode = document.createTextNode(text);
I'm pretty stuck on how this should be achieved, mostly down to my lack of javascript knowledge. This is the code I'm looking at:
http://jsfiddle.net/spadez/VrGau/
What I'm trying to do is have it so a user can type add a "responsibility" in the responsibility field, then click add and have it appear in a list above it. The user can do this for up to 10 responsibilities.
The result would look something like this:
**Responsibility List:**
- Added responsibility 1
- Added responsibilty 2
*responsibility field - add button*
Can anyone explain how this should be done, it seems like it would have to involve ajax. I would really appreciate some more information or even an example.
Thank you.
EDIT: Here is a little bit more clarification. I want this data to be sent to the server as a list of items. I have seen examples of this being implemented, and here is a screenshot:
The user types in something in the text box, then clicks "add" and then it appears in a list above it. This information is what is submitted to the server.
Maybe this one can help also, this limits only 10 list
var eachline='';
$("#send").click(function(){
var lines = $('#Responsibilities').val().split('\n');
var lines2 = $('#Overview').val().split('\n');
if(lines2.length>10)return false;
for(var i = 0;i < lines.length;i++){
if(lines[i]!='' && i+lines2.length<11){
eachline += '- Added ' + lines[i] + '\n';
}
}
$('#Overview').text(eachline);
$('#Responsibilities').val('');
});
Try it here
http://jsfiddle.net/markipe/ZTuDJ/14/
Something like that maybe?
http://jsfiddle.net/VrGau/10/
var $responsibilityInput = $('#responsibilityInput'),
$responsibilityList = $('#responsibilityList'),
$inputButton = $('#send'),
rCounter = 0;
var addResponsibility = function () {
if(rCounter < 10){
var newVal = $responsibilityList.val()+$responsibilityInput.val();
$responsibilityList.val(newVal+'\n');
$responsibilityInput.val('');
}
}
$inputButton.click(addResponsibility);
Add id for textarea fields
<textarea rows="4" cols="50" placeholder="Responsibilities" id="resplist"></textarea>Add responsibility<br />
<textarea rows="4" cols="50" placeholder="How to apply" id="inputresp"></textarea>
You need Jquery. Use this js code
var i=0;
$("#send").click(addresp);
function addresp()
{
if (i<10)
{
$("#resplist").val($("#resplist").val()+$("#inputresp").val()+'\n');
$("#inputresp").val("");
i++;
}
}
http://jsfiddle.net/br0nsk1y/bDE9W/
It depends on if you want to post data to the server or not. If only in the client side you can do like this.
$("#send").on("click", function(event){
if($("#list li").size() < 10){
$("#list").append("<li>" + $("#responsibilities").val() + "</li>");
}
});

Below is a function where it controls whatever happens after a file has finished uploading in its own table row. Each table row consists of a file input where the user can upload a file and then the name of the file is appended within it's own table row.
If the upload was successful then it displays a successful message, if upload was not successful then it displays a message stating there is an error. But I also have another function within the function where the user can delete a file by clicking on the "Delete" button. The only problem I have is with this line of code:
$(".imagemsg" + counter).html(data);
Let's say that I have 2 table rows, and I delete a file in the first row, the message within .imagemsg should only be displayed in the first row as that was the row the deletion occured, it shouldn't display the message in the first and second row.
Another example is that if I have 4 table rows and I delete the file in the third row, then the message should be displayed in the 3rd row as that is where the deletion has occured.
So my question is what do I need to add to $(".imagemsg" + counter).html(data); so that the message is only displayed within the row the deletion of the file occured and not in all .imagemsg which is in every row?
Below is full code:
function stopImageUpload(success, imagefilename){
var result = '';
var counter = 0;
counter++;
if (success == 1){
result = '<span class="imagemsg'+counter+'">The file was uploaded successfully!</span><br/><br/>';
$('.listImage').eq(window.lastUploadImageIndex).append('<div>' + htmlEncode(imagefilename) + '<button type="button" class="deletefileimage" image_file_name="' + imagefilename + '">Remove</button><br/><hr/></div>');
}
else {
result = '<span class="imageemsg">There was an error during file upload!</span><br/><br/>';
}
$(".deletefileimage").on("click", function(event) {
var image_file_name = $(this).attr('image_file_name');
jQuery.ajax("deleteimage.php?imagefilename=" + image_file_name)
.done(function(data) {
$(".imagemsg" + counter).html(data);
});
$(this).parent().remove();
});
return true;
}
BELOW IS HTML CODE:
var $fileImage = $("<form action='imageupload.php' method='post' enctype='multipart/form-data' target='upload_target' onsubmit='return imageClickHandler(this);' class='imageuploadform' >" +
"Image File: <input name='fileImage' type='file' class='fileImage' /></label><br/><br/><label class='imagelbl'>" +
"<input type='submit' name='submitImageBtn' class='sbtnimage' value='Upload' /></label>" +
"</p><p class='listImage' align='left'></p>" +
"<iframe class='upload_target' name='upload_target' src='#' style='width:0;height:0;border:0px;solid;#fff;'></iframe></form>");
I believe that your counter variable will always be 1. So, all your span.imagemsg1 are the same. This is why you get the message in every row. Set the counter outside the function to increment the counter.
I believe that will stop the behavior that you are seeing, but I would like to give a shout out to the other answers as they are giving good advice to cleaning this code up.
Frankly, you should never use unique identifier in the class. Why not use an id or a data-image-count attribute?
In your html code you'll need to add a unique identifier, I would suggest using id. This way when you try to reference the element to add the error message in, it will only find one element. Currently it's looking for the first occurrence of the element with class = "imagemsg". You'll need a way to loop through each "row" and make the id's "imagemgs1", "imagemsg2", etc...Hope it helps.
It would be helpful to be able to see the HTML. Also, I cannot see in your script what you do with the "result" value. At this stage, I personally don't think there is enough info to help satisfactorily you yet.
However, an issue you will undoubtedly see is with your "counter" variable. Maybe that is your problem - hard to tell without the detail I asked for above. Your jQuery.ajax call will complete at some point but the value of "counter" may not be the same as when you called the jQuery.ajax() method. This is because the "counter" variable is being declared in a different scope.
E.g. Look at the code below. It sort of demonstrates your problem with the counter variable. It may look like at the end of 5 seconds it will spit out the numbers from 1 to 10 but it won't. It will spit out the value "10" ten times.
var x = 0;
for (var i = 0; i < 10; i++)
{
x++;
setTimeout(function() { console.log(x); }, 5000);
}
This problem applies to your code as well. You can fix the above by copying the variable value in to a variable of your local scope. E.g.:
var x = 0;
for (var i = 0; i < 10; i++)
{
var newScope = function() {
x++;
var y = x;
setTimeout(function() { console.log(y); }, 5000);
}();
}
