Object.create erasing properties of object - javascript

var obj={name:'John'}
var obj1=Object.create(obj);
This line will add the properties on the prototype of the obj1.
so if i will use console.log(obj1.name) , as property is not existing on current object it will go up in prototype chain and get name property and its value too.
Now consider
var obj2={lname:'Mart'}
obj2=Object.create(obj);
Now it will add name property to its prototype which is fine.
But all properties are gone of obj2 itself. (Reason for it i can think of from crokford's shim implementation where new object is created,properties added to its prototype and then returning them)
I can do so by obj2._ _proto_ _=obj; (Not browser friendly for all browsers)
Now my question is if good way of object.create is erasing properties, how should I add properties to my prototype so that own properties of obj2 do not get erased.
I don't want to make use of constructors. Is there any another way to add properties to prototype apart from above two. Please put light.

What you want is Object.assign. From the MDN:
The Object.assign() method is used to copy the values of all
enumerable own properties from one or more source objects to a target
object. It will return the target object.
Example

If you want to extend a prototype, just assign to the prototype instead of the object itself, e.g.:

Object.hasOwn()
Object.hasOwn() is recommended over Object.hasOwnProperty() because it works for objects created using Object.create(null) and with objects that have overridden the inherited hasOwnProperty() method. While it is possible to workaround these problems by calling Object.prototype.hasOwnProperty() on an external object, Object.hasOwn() is more intuitive.

I'm really confused by the answers that have been given - most of them are just outright incorrect. Of course you can have object properties that have undefined, null, or false values. So simply reducing the property check to typeof this[property] or, even worse, x.key will give you completely misleading results.
It depends on what you're looking for. If you want to know if an object physically contains a property (and it is not coming from somewhere up on the prototype chain) then object.hasOwnProperty is the way to go. All modern browsers support it. (It was missing in older versions of Safari - 2.0.1 and older - but those versions of the browser are rarely used any more.)
If what you're looking for is if an object has a property on it that is iterable (when you iterate over the properties of the object, it will appear) then doing: prop in object will give you your desired effect.
Since using hasOwnProperty is probably what you want, and considering that you may want a fallback method, I present to you the following solution:

The above is a working, cross-browser, solution to hasOwnProperty(), with one caveat: It is unable to distinguish between cases where an identical property is on the prototype and on the instance - it just assumes that it's coming from the prototype. You could shift it to be more lenient or strict, based upon your situation, but at the very least this should be more helpful.
With Underscore.js or (even better) Lodash:
_.has(x, 'key');
Which calls Object.prototype.hasOwnProperty, but (a) is shorter to type, and (b) uses "a safe reference to hasOwnProperty" (i.e. it works even if hasOwnProperty is overwritten).
In particular, Lodash defines _.has as:

Bear in mind that undefined is (unfortunately) not a reserved word in JavaScript if you’re not using strict mode. Therefore, someone (someone else, obviously) could have the grand idea of redefining it, breaking your code.
A more robust method is therefore the following:

On the flip side, this method is much more verbose and also slower. :-/

You can also loop through all the properties of the object using a for - in loop, and then check for the specific property:

You must consider if this object property is enumerable or not, because non-enumerable properties will not show up in a for-in loop. Also, if the enumerable property is shadowing a non-enumerable property of the prototype, it will not show up in Internet Explorer 8 and earlier.

Reflections provide methods that can be used to interact with Javascript objects. The static Reflect.has() method works like the in operator as a function.

If the property does not exist on the object, it will return the string undefined. Else it will return the appropriate property type. Similarly, you can check if a property exists by comparing directly to the undefined Javascript property

Let's cut through some confusion here. First, let's simplify by assuming hasOwnProperty already exists; this is true of the vast majority of current browsers in use.
hasOwnProperty returns true if the attribute name that is passed to it has been added to the object. It is entirely independent of the actual value assigned to it which may be exactly undefined.
Hence:
var o = {}
o.x = undefined
var a = o.hasOwnProperty('x') // a is true
var b = o.x === undefined // b is also true
However:
var o = {}
var a = o.hasOwnProperty('x') // a is now false
var b = o.x === undefined // b is still true
The problem is what happens when an object in the prototype chain has an attribute with the value of undefined? hasOwnProperty will be false for it, and so will !== undefined. Yet, for..in will still list it in the enumeration.
The bottom line is there is no cross-browser way (since Internet Explorer doesn't expose __prototype__) to determine that a specific identifier has not been attached to an object or anything in its prototype chain.
If you are searching for a property, then "no". You want:
if ('prop' in obj) { }
In general, you should not care whether or not the property comes from the prototype or the object.
However, because you used 'key' in your sample code, it looks like you are treating the object as a hash, in which case your answer would make sense. All of the hashes keys would be properties in the object, and you avoid the extra properties contributed by the prototype.
John Resig's answer was very comprehensive, but I thought it wasn't clear. Especially with when to use "'prop' in obj".
For testing simple objects, use:
if (obj[x] !== undefined)
If you don't know what object type it is, use:

The evaluation tells us that unless we specifically want to check the object's prototype chain as well as the object itself, we should not use the common form:

It is between 2 to 6 times slower depending on the use case

Bottom line, if your Obj is not necessarily a simple object and you wish to avoid checking the object's prototype chain and to ensure x is owned by Obj directly, use if (obj.hasOwnProperty(x))....
Otherwise, when using a simple object and not being worried about the object's prototype chain, using if (typeof(obj[x]) !== 'undefined')... is the safest and fastest way.
If you use a simple object as a hash table and never do anything kinky, I would use if (obj[x])... as I find it much more readable.
Yes it is :) I think you can also do Object.prototype.hasOwnProperty.call(x, 'key') which should also work if x has a property called hasOwnProperty :)
But that tests for own properties. If you want to check if it has an property that may also be inhered you can use typeof x.foo != 'undefined'.

Do not do this object.hasOwnProperty(key)). It's really bad because these methods may be shadowed by properties on the object in question - consider { hasOwnProperty: false } - or, the object may be a null object (Object.create(null)).

So most probably, for what seems by your question, you don't want to use hasOwnProperty, which determines if the property exists as attached directly to the object itself,.

There is a method, "hasOwnProperty", that exists on an object, but it's not recommended to call this method directly, because it might be sometimes that the object is null or some property exist on the object like: { hasOwnProperty: false }

Changing a specific property inside an object changes that same property in another object of the same type Typescript

I have a really weird problem, let me just explain:
Obj1: DetailsType = {property1: 123, property2: [{subProp1: 'a', subProp2: 'b'}]}
Obj2: DetailsType = new DetailsType(Obj1)
This is the constructor of DetailsType:

Now I run the following code

At this point, for some reason, the value of Obj1.property2[0].subProp1 is 'z' Even though we changed the value of subProp1 for Obj2! However, Obj1.property1 is still 123
So why does changing property2 which is an array, affect the value on both objects?? How can property1, a number, work correctly, but property2 work so weirdly? It works vice versa, whether I change subProp1 for Obj1 or Obj2. I'm so confused.

It is happening because the value.property2 is an object with many nested references to other objects inside it. You need to deep clone the value.property2 in the constructor:

The current answer (with JSON.stringify) is maybe not the worst, because it will work in this case. But we don't know, how your objects in the array of prop2 will actually look like. Because it is a TypeScript class, it could be, that you also add some methods to it. With JSON.stringify though, all methods/functions would be lost. Only the value-properties are retained, but also not in the right order. The result is just some anonymous object.
Because it is sometimes necessary to clone objects (and not have their properties referenced to the original object), it is pretty useful to add a .clone() function that can be used with every object and array.
This will work by just adding the following code:

What is the purpose of `Object(target)` in the `Object.assign()` polyfill

In the MDN page forObject.assign() the example polyfill first wraps all sources and the target parameters in Object() before iterating over the properties.
(i.e. Object(target), Object(source1), Object(source2)...).
The text also mentions that the additional properties are added directly to the target before returning the target. However, wrapping the target in Object() results in an object that is different than simply augmenting properties. (i.e. Object(target).newProp !== target.newProp).
All the examples given have objects as parameters to Object.assign(). The use-case for non-object source or target parameters is therefore not clear.
A) What is the purpose of wrapping parameters in Object()? (I am under the impression that Object.keys(x) is the same as Object.keys(Object(x))).
B) What are possible use cases for using Object.assign() with non-objects, is any? (for example something like: Object.assign(1, 'b', [3], true, function(){}) )

Numbers in JavaScript
Numbers in JavaScript are what the spec calls 'Primitive Value Type'
From the specification about Numbers:
Number value # Ⓣ
primitive value corresponding to a double-precision 64-bit binary format IEEE 754 value.
NOTE A Number value is a member of the Number type and is a direct representation of a number.
So in your case newvar will be a copy of oldvar and not a reference.
In JavaScript, Number, Boolean, undefined, null or String are value types.
When passing any of these 5 around, you are in fact passing values and not references, no need to clone those.
When you pass anything else around (Objects) need to use cloning since they are reference types.
When cloning objects in JavaScript there are two approaches.
Shallow Cloning
This means you clone 1 level deep. Assuming all our properties in the object are enumerable (This is usually the case if you haven't used property descriptors) you can use something like:

However, often we want to copy the object's own properties and not everything it might inherit from its prototype, so we can do:

Note these two only shallow copy properties off a, they do not deal with setting the prototype, and clone all the properties by reference (Except properties who are primitive value types themselves :) ).
Deep copying
Deep copying means creating a clone of the object that is several levels deep. This calls to recursion since deep copying is defined as such (in psuedocode)
CopyObject(object)
If object is a primitive value type
return object
clone := Empty Object
For every member of object
Add CopyObject(member) as a property to clone
Return clone
We are applying the algorithm recursively on object properties of the clone.
Here is a sample implementation that I documented for you. It assumes ES5 (Chrome) but you can easily adapt it to other/older browsers. It does more stuff like treat Date and Regex like special cases. It also keeps a dictionary of properties it already handled so it will be able to handle circular references in an object. It is intended for learning and not for production use :) If you have any questions about it feel free.

javascript - Object.create explanation

I have a question about the following canonical object.create method:

On line 3 of the above code we set the prototype property of the F object to the o argument's prototype.
I would have thought this meant that both o and F point to the same prototype and therefore point to the same set of members.
But the code then goes onto copy all the members in the prop in props loop.
What is the point of setting the prototype in line 3 if we then go onto copy all the members manually?
There's a mistake in the version of Object.create in your question: The loop attaches the properties to the constructor function F (not to the returned object, or its prototype) which means they're not accessible in the created object.
The properties of the second parameter to Object.create are supposed to be copied to the newly created object. The Mozilla documentation for Object.create puts it like this:
If specified and not undefined, an object whose enumerable own properties (that is, those properties defined upon itself and not enumerable properties along its prototype chain) specify property descriptors to be added to the newly-created object, with the corresponding property names.
Try running the following code with the version of Object.create in the question:

You'll find that o.a == "prototype's a" and o.b == "prototype's b", "object's a" is lost.
The following version of the function would probably be more useful:

Let's try it out with the same example:

The new object o is created with a prototype that has properties a and b and it's own property a.
Let's look at o.b first: o.hasOwnProperty("b") will return false, because o does not have a property called b. That's where the prototype comes in; because there is no property b it is looked up on the prototype, and therefore o.b === "prototype's b".
On the other hand, o.hasOwnProperty("a") will return true, because o does have an a property. o.a == "object's a" and nothing is looked up from the prototype.
As pointed out in #chuckj's answer, the correct implementation of Object.create is more complicated than this. For more details, see John Resig's post on ECMAScript 5 Objects and Properties.
The code you present is not equivalent to Object.create() as defined by the ECMA standard. The members of the second parameter, here called prop, is supposed to be a set of descriptors to be defined on the resulting object, not copied to the constructor function. This is more accurate (but not exacly right either),

The props parameter contains the property descriptors for the members of the new object you want to be different than specified in the prototype, o. The values are not supposed to be copied literally into the object rather they are supposed to be processed as if you called Object.defineProperties(), above simulated by assigning the value part of the descriptor to the new object. Object.create() cannot be accurately polyfilled to ECMA 3 since it can be used to specifiy properties with accessor functions, though the above will work for props which use value instead of get or set.
If you are not interested in a polyfill version, the following is an accurate description of what Object.create() does, assuming the existence of both __proto__ and Object.defineProperties().

Think of F as a function that returns a new instance of an object and F.prototype a reference to the object that the new instance is borrowing properties from.
Instances created with F have their own property set independant of F.prototype.
When a property cannot be found in an incance of F then the runtime will step up the prototype chain and peek to see if the property exists in F.prototype.
This is why you would want to copy some and inherit others.
The point of the Prototype is to provide class-like code reuse/property storage.
Think of F.prototype as the class instances of F as the object.
