Check this jsfiddle, and have a look at the console. $$ is not defined. Now, open a completely new window, and enter $$ into a console. It defines a function for getting a (jquery-like) array of all the dom elements which match the selector:

There are a number of functions that are available in various browser's devtools consoles. Collectively, the methods are known as the Command Line API(off-line) (new link) and they all originate from Firebug. Nowadays we just have parity across browsers because Firebug did things (mostly) right.
But back when Firebug was being created (2006), the JavaScript library that was all the rage was Prototype.js. $ was grabbed by Prototype for some getElementById() syntactic sugar as that was certainly the quickest way to be grabbing elements and most common element acquisition technique at the time. It was such a timesaver, folks used the whole library just for the $ sugar.
In early 2006, jQuery then debuted and used $() for selecting any element based on css selector. As my old CSS Selector Engine Timeline post shows, Prototype then followed up four days later with their own, but as $ was already taken in their library they just went to $$(), which is now known as the bling-bling function.
So Firebug was leveraging Prototype's API as it was still ruling the roost in 2006. Now, in the days of jQuery and post-jQuery aliasing like window.$ = document.querySelectorAll.bind(document), we see it as quite backwards. Interestingly, when Opera revolutionized Dragonfly, their browser dev tools, they chose $ as their querySelectorAll alias, to better match present day practices, which IMO makes a bit more sense.

I would like to use console.log(message) to write out some information to the browser console. However, I came across this url which seems to recommend against it:

I agree with Mike C above-- console is generally available in most browsers, but you should probably remove console logs before a site gets pushed to production.
Additionally, some older browser might not have the console, and if you did accidentally leave in a console log, it would fire an error when it attempted to interact with with something that wasn't defined. As an extra failsafe, you can declare console and console.log in the global namespace if they are not detected, just in case:

simple answer is yes, But also the console.log(message) is usaually used for testing purposes and for other relevant intentions like letting other developers interract with your js source code in some sort.
However.
You should not use it to log very important messages as this could be a hole your application presumably.

PhantomJS (since it uses V8 like Chrome and Node.js)
and more, I'm sure. As long as you're debugging in any of the environments which supports it, you're fine. You should be removing your logging statements before pushing to production anyway so as long as it works for debugging, it's nothing to worry about.

List all functions of jquery select

I'm trying to explore a jquery plugin.

Off the top of my head, here are the options you have:
1- Check the plugins' documentation. This is my prefer option because exploring the list of functions and methods DON"T necessarily describe the object's behaviour. However, documentation usually does
2- If the plugin is open source, then explore the internals by yourself
3- dump the object to the console using console.log. IMO, Google Chrome has one of the best (if not the best) developer tools integrated to the browser
4- Similar to the above you can add a breakpoint or a debugger statement to pause execution of javascript wherever you want and then explore the object in question

Setting breakpoints dynamically at runtime in Javascript

Both firebug and the built in console in webkit browsers make it possible to set breakpoints in running Javascript code, so you can debug it as you would with any other language.
What I'm wondering is if there is any way that I can instruct firebug or webkit that I'd like to set a breakpoint on line X in file Y at runtime, and to be able to examine variables in the specific scope that I have paused in.
I need something that can work in both Chrome (or any other webkit browser) and Firefox. For the latter Firebug is an acceptable dependency. Supporting IE is not a requirement.
I've been building an in-browser IDE ( quick video for the interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5lGwqi8L_g ) and want to give it a bit more meat.
One thing I did try was just adding debugger; as an extra line where users set them, but this isn't really an ideal solution.
I'd say you can definitely do this for webkit browsers using the remote debugging protocol. This is based on a websocket connection and a json message protocol that goes back and forth.

Chrome also offers more information about this inside its remote developer-tools docs.
For the debugger domain, for instance, you can see how you can use Debugger.setBreakpoint, Debugger.setBreakpointByUrl and Debugger.setBreakpointsActive to work with breakpoints.
On the other hand, Mozilla also seems to be working on this as you can see in https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Debugger-API and https://wiki.mozilla.org/Remote_Debugging_Protocol though I don't know the completion status of it.
In this case, you can work with breakpoints using the Debugger.Script APIs setBreakPoint, getBreakPoint, getBreakpoints, clearBreakpoints and clearAllBreakpoints

There isn't such a thing, at least not using the public, scriptable side of JavaScript. It would be possible if you have a privileged browser extension that could do that for you. For example, Firebug has a debug method which you can call from its command line, but not from scripts inside a page.
So, you have two solutions:
Implement your own JavaScript interpreter, which you can control as you wish. Might be a bit too ambitious, though...
Rely on a browser extension that can set breakpoints anywhere in the code, expose some API to public code, and interact with it from your JavaScript. But that means that users will have to install some extra piece of software before they can use your "Web IDE".
Use _defineSetter__ to watch variables, and combine it with a call to debugger when an assignment happens.

It's not a jQuery feature but a feature for debugging purposes. You can for instance log something to the console when something happens. For instance:
$('#someButton').click(function() {
console.log('#someButton was clicked');
// do something
});
You'd then see #someButton was clicked in Firebug’s “Console” tab (or another tool’s console — e.g. Chrome’s Web Inspector) when you would click the button.
For some reasons, the console object could be unavailable. Then you could check if it is - this is useful as you don't have to remove your debugging code when you deploy to production:

Now with iOS 6 you can view the console through Safari in OS X if you plug in your device. Or you can do so with the emulator, simply open a Safari browser window and go to the "Develop" tab. There you will find options to get the Safari inspector to communicate with your device.

Older browser problems
Lastly older versions of IE will crash if you use console.log in your code and not have the developer tools open at the same time. Luckily it's an easy fix. Use the below code snippet at the top of your code:
if(!window.console){ window.console = {log: function(){} }; }
This checks to see if the console is present, and if not it sets it to an object with a blank function called log. This way window.console and window.console.log is never truly undefined.
You can view any messages logged to the console if you use a tool such as Firebug to inspect your code. Let's say you do this:
console.log('Testing console');
When you access the console in Firebug (or whichever tool you decide to use to inspect your code), you will see whatever message you told the function to log. This is particularly useful when you want to see if a function is executing, or if a variable is being passed/assigned properly. It's actually rather valuable for figuring out just what went wrong with your code.
It will post a log message to the browser's javascript console, e.g. Firebug or Developer Tools (Chrome / Safari) and will show the line and file where it was executed from.
Moreover, when you output a jQuery Object it will include a reference to that element in the DOM, and clicking it will go to that in the Elements/HTML tab.
You can use various methods, but beware that for it to work in Firefox, you must have Firebug open, otherwise the whole page will crash. Whether what you're logging is a variable, array, object or DOM element, it will give you a full breakdown including the prototype for the object as well (always interesting to have a poke around). You can also include as many arguments as you want, and they will be replaced by spaces.

These show up with different logos for each command.

There is nothing to do with jQuery and if you want to use it I advice you to do
if (window.console) {
console.log("your message")
}
So you don't break your code when it is not available.
As suggested in the comment, you can also execute that in one place and then use console.log as normal

console.log has nothing to do with jQuery. It is a common object/method provided by debuggers (including the Chrome debugger and Firebug) that allows a script to log data (or objects in most cases) to the JavaScript console.
console.log logs debug information to the console on some browsers (Firefox with Firebug installed, Chrome, IE8, anything with Firebug Lite installed). On Firefox it is a very powerful tool, allowing you to inspect objects or examine the layout or other properties of HTML elements. It isn't related to jQuery, but there are two things that are commonly done when using it with jQuery:
install the FireQuery extension for Firebug. This, amongst other advantages, makes the logging of jQuery objects look nicer.
create a wrapper that is more in line with jQuery's chaining code conventions.
This means usually something like this:
$.fn.log = function() {
if (window.console && console.log) {
console.log(this);
}
return this;
}
which you can then invoke like
$('foo.bar').find(':baz').log().hide();
to easily check inside jQuery chains.
console.log has nothing to do with jQuery.

A point of confusion sometimes is that to log a text message along with the contents of one of your objects using console.log, you have to pass each one of the two as a different argument. This means that you have to separate them by commas because if you were to use the + operator to concatenate the outputs, this would implicitly call the .toString() method of your object. This in most cases is not explicitly overriden and the default implementation inherited by Object doesn't provide any useful information.
Example to try in console:

whereas if you tried to concatenate the informative text message along with the object's contents you'd get:

So keep in mind that console.log in fact takes as many arguments as you like.
Use console.log to add debugging information to your page.
Many people use alert(hasNinjas) for this purpose but console.log(hasNinjas) is easier to work with. Using an alert pop-ups up a modal dialog box that blocks the user interface.
Edit: I agree with Baptiste Pernet and Jan Hančič that it is a very good idea to check if window.console is defined first so that your code doesn't break if there is no console available.
An example - suppose you want to know which line of code you were able to run your program (before it broke!), simply type in

console.log specifically is a method for developers to write code to inconspicuously inform the developers what the code is doing. It can be used to alert you that there's an issue, but shouldn't take the place of an interactive debugger when it comes time to debug the code. Its asynchronous nature means that the logged values don't necessarily represent the value when the method was called.
In short: log errors with console.log (if available), then fix the errors using your debugger of choice: Firebug, WebKit Developer Tools (built-in to Safari and Chrome), IE Developer Tools or Visual Studio.
