I am using JQuery UI AutoComplete in a content editable div. I am encountering an issue where a <br>-tag is inserted after I select a value from the autocomplete dropdown and I type something in the end of the <div>.
The steps to reproduce are:
Write something
Select something from the autocomplete dropdown
Place cursor at end of content editable div
Insert a space
This results in a <br> tag being inserted at the end of the <div>. How can I prevent this?
http://jsfiddle.net/qf5L0d27/
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.8.0/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://code.jquery.com/ui/1.11.4/jquery-ui.js"></script>
<div id="main" contenteditable="true" style="border:1px solid black;width:300px;height:200px"></div>
<script>
$("div").autocomplete({
source: function (request, response){
response(['test1', 'test2']);
},
select: function(event, ui){
el = $("div#main");
old_content = el.html();
extra_content = ui.item.value;
el.html(old_content + extra_content);
el.autocomplete("destroy");
return false;
}
});
</script>
This does not appear to be a problem with autocomplete.
A contenteditable div inserts a <br> or depending on the browser at the end if it loses and regains focus.

I got a problem in updating the value within <textarea> tags. The procedure is like this, there is an initial value inside textarea, then the user changes it. If I want to use a js script (implemented by a button) to modify the value further, it does not work at all. However, if we do nothing on the textarea, the button works perfectly. So weird to me. Could anyone shed any light on this? The code is posted below.
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#mybutton").click(function() {
var mystring = "The previous textarea value is <br><em>" + $("#myarea").val() + "</em>";
$("#myarea").html("Star wars"); // this line doesn't work after editting the textarea but works if you do not edit anything, why?
$("#placeholder").html(mystring);
});
});
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.12.0/jquery.min.js"></script>
<body>
<div>Input whatever you want</div>
<textarea id="myarea" style="width: 300px; height: 70px">Initial text</textarea>
<div>
<button id="mybutton">Click after editing</button>
<br> The button is supposed to change the text to <em>Star wars</em>.
</div>
<div id="placeholder"></div>
</body>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#mybutton").click(function() {
var mystring = "The previous textarea value is <br><em>" + $("#myarea").val() + "</em>";
$("#myarea").val("Star wars"); //The changes have to be made on this line
$("#placeholder").html(mystring);
});
});
Inorder to change the value of textarea use val() , instead of html().
I am drag-and-dropping some text from a proprietary application into an HTML <textarea> element. This software cannot copy-paste; drag-and-drop is the only option. However, the drag and drop can be simulated by simply typing a few lines in Word, then dragging them into the browser.
I have a jsfiddle with my code. However, when I drag some lines from the program into the text box the first time, I get "undefined" returned. When I try it again without reloading the page (when the text area already has contents), it works great.
How can I get it to work the first time?
You need to put the line
$('#return').html(dropstr);
inside of the getAsString callback.
var dropstr;
$( document ).ready(function() {
$('#dropbox').on('drop', function(e) {
e.originalEvent.dataTransfer.items[0].getAsString(function(str){
dropstr=str;
console.log(dropstr);
$('#return').html(dropstr);
});
});
});
#return{
border:1px solid black;
width: 200px;
height: 50px;
}
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<div id="dropbox" contenteditable="true" id="dropbox">
<textarea></textarea>
</div>
<div id="return">
</div>
You were appending outside of callback which itself is not needed at least in your case. fiddle
<div id="dropbox" contenteditable="true" id="dropbox">
<textarea></textarea>
</div>
<div id="return">
</div>
and here is js.
var dropstr;
$(document).ready(function() {
$('#dropbox').on('drop', function(e) {
var str = e.originalEvent.dataTransfer.getData('Text');
console.log(str);
$('#return').html(str);
});
});
I've some problems with JQuery Autocomplete, my code it's like:
var mySource = [{"label":"Value one","id":"1"},{"label":"Value two","id":"2"},{"label":"Value three","id":"3"}];
$("#txtAutocomplete").autocomplete({
source: mySource,
select: function(event, ui){
if(ui.item){
//console.log('select', ui.item.label);
$("#hiddenField").val(ui.item.id);
return ui.item.label;
}
else{
//console.log('select with null value');
$("#hiddenField").val('');
}
},
change: function(event, ui){
if(ui.item){
//console.log('change', ui.item.id);
$("#hiddenField").val(ui.item.id);
}
else{
//console.log('change with null value');
$("#hiddenField").val('');
}
}
});

<ol>
<li>Type 'Value' in the text box</li>
<li>Press 'arrow down' to select the first element</li>
<li>Press enter</li>
<li>Keep pressed backspace to delete completely the selected item</li>
<li>Press TAB</li>
<li>Value in 'readonly' field is still there</li>
</ol>
</p>
<input type="text" id="txtAutocomplete">
<input type="text" id="hiddenField" disabled="disabled">
<button>Button added just to have an element to focus on</button>
When I put the string 'value' in the editable field, autocomplete appears correctly, so I can select one value and put it in the textbox with id hiddenField.
Then, if I clear the value in the textbox, I can't update the related hiddenField with a blank value, because change event doesn't fire. Why?
Steps to test snippet:
Write 'value' in the editable field
Select one value
Clear the selected value
hiddenField will still contain old value.
Thanks
Note: It doesn't work when I clear the field after selection but still keeping the focus on it.
Updated: I reported the bug here on bugs.jqueryui.com
I have run to this problem and there is a hack to avoid the problem. You have to force a blur but with a setTimeout
if(ui.item){
//console.log('select', ui.item.label);
$("#hiddenField").val(ui.item.id);
setTimeout(function () {
$(event.target).blur();
});
return ui.item.label;
}
You don't have to keep the inputs in sync inside the autocomplete options. Attach a separate event handler to your text input like so:
$("#txtAutocomplete").autocomplete({
source: ['test1', 'test2', 'test3'],
select: function(event, ui){
console.log('select', ui.item.value);
$("#hiddenField").val(ui.item.value);
}
});
$("#txtAutocomplete").on("input propertychange", function () {
console.log("change", this.value);
$("#hiddenField").val(this.value);
});
<link href="https://code.jquery.com/ui/1.11.4/themes/smoothness/jquery-ui.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.11.3.js"></script>
<script src="https://code.jquery.com/ui/1.11.4/jquery-ui.js"></script>
<input type="text" id="txtAutocomplete">
<input type="text" id="hiddenField" disabled="disabled">
When I run your code snippet, the change event does get fired each time I select an item, or when I clear the value, and the log gets printed. But the event gets fired only after I tab out after a selection, or after I click outside the auto-complete input element.
This is because, as per the documentation, the change event gets fired only when the element loses focus.
Steps that make it work:
Write 'test' in the editable field, and select an option
Tab out - this fires the change event
Delete the value
Tab out - this fires the change event
<div class="editable" contenteditable="true"></div>
<textarea name="markdown" class="markdown" /></textarea>//display none
new MediumEditor('.editable', {
extensions: {
markdown: new MeMarkdown(function (md) {
document.querySelector(".markdown").textContent = md;
}),
img: new imgButton()
}
$('.editable').append("<img src='abc' />");
I have a div use medium-editor & medium-editor markdown
when user type inside of .editable, textarea will sync.
I also have a button click, it will append an image into .editable
my problem is markdown only update when .editable keypress
so if I append text, textarea wont sync, unless I press any key inside of .editable again
anyone know how to tell markdown to update after append image
try this
function updateTextArea(index,editable){
var textarea = editable.parentNode.querySelector('textarea[medium-editor-textarea-id="' + editable.getAttribute('medium-editor-textarea-id') + '"]');
if (textarea) {
textarea.value = editable.innerHTML.trim();
}
}
$('.editable').append("<img src='abc' />");
$('.editable').each(updateTextArea);
The updateTextArea function will update a text area corresponds to editable area.
Here is the code I tried
var editor = new MediumEditor('.editable', {
buttonLabels: 'fontawesome'
});
function updateTextArea(index,editable){
var textarea = editable.parentNode.querySelector('textarea[medium-editor-textarea-id="' + editable.getAttribute('medium-editor-textarea-id') + '"]');
if (textarea) {
textarea.value = editable.innerHTML.trim();
}
}
$("#addImage").click(function(){
$('.editable').append("<img src='abc' />");
$('.editable').each(updateTextArea);
});
$('.editable').change(updateTextArea);

<div id="container">
<h1>Medium Editor</h1>
<textarea class="editable medium-editor-textarea" name="markdown" id="markdown"><p>Textarea is now supported</p></textarea>
<input type="button" id="addImage" value="Add Image">
<input type="button" value="Alert textarea content" onclick="alert(document.getElementById('markdown').value)">
</div>
If you use the setContent() method of the editor (documentation here), this will allow you to add content and the editor will detect the change and fire all the proper events. This should include notifying the markdown extension that the content has changed and that should update the markdown.
So, instead of this:
$('.editable').append('<img src="abc" />');
Try this:
editor.setContent(editor.getContent() + '<img src="abc" />');
This also leverages the getContent() method (documentation here).
NOTE: These examples assume you're only using a single editor element for MediumEditor. If you are passing multiple elements into a single instance of MediumEditor, you may need to specify a value for the index parameter to both setContent() and getContent()
I'm trying to implement, what I thought would be a simple click, load, slideDown scenario. But I can't get the slideDown part to display.
I have the following two buttons:
<div>
<fieldset id="btn">
<input class="databasebtn" type="submit" name="nameDatabaseBtn" id="db1" data-id=1" VALUE="DB1"/></br>
<input class="databasebtn" type="submit" name="nameDatabaseBtn" id="db2" data-id="2" VALUE="DB2"/></br>
</fieldset>
</div>
I then have the following jQuery:
$(document).ready(function()
{
$('.databasebtn').on('click',function()
{
$(this).append("<div id='btnlist'></div>");
$('#btnlist').slideDown("200",function()
{
$('#btnlist').load("test78b.php");
});
})
});
The idea being that I click the button, I append the #btnlist div to the button, and fill the new div with the contents of test78b.php, which should generate a list of checkboxes.
It all works fine, except that I can't see the checkboxes. If I look at the code in the background it is all there, it just wont show up.
If I include 'test78b.php' separately it displays as expected.
Is there something I am missing?
You can not append div to a button, you can append div to a parent in this case fildset with this code
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.databasebtn').on('click',function(){
$(this).parent().append("<div id='btnlist'></div>");
$('#btnlist').slideDown('slow',function(){
$('#btnlist').load("your page");
})
})
});
</script>
or you can use insertBefore to append div before butoon clicked with this code
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.databasebtn').on('click',function(){
$("<div id='btnlist'></div>").insertBefore($(this))
$('#btnlist').slideDown('slow',function(){
$('#btnlist').load("your page");
})
})
});
</script>
or append div to the body tag with this other code
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.databasebtn').on('click',function(){
$("<div id='btnlist'></div>").appendTo('body')
$('#btnlist').slideDown('slow',function(){
$('#btnlist').load("your page");
})
})
});
</script>
and then, for a correct html code,you shouldn't have multiple items on the same page with the same id. The div added via script should not have id btnlist but class="btnlist"
DEMO http://jsfiddle.net/TWQbD/4/
$('.databasebtn').on('click',function() {
$(this).next('.databasetext').append("<div class='btnlist'>test78b.php</div>");
$(this).next('.databasetext').find('.btnlist').last().slideDown("1000");
});
