I need to check in my javascript code which mouse buttons are pressed. It's not so hard to do but I need to check it when a page is just loading and no mousedown event was fired in that page yet. For example when onload event is fired. Is it possible? It can be done with jQuery too if it wouldn't be done only with javascript.
JavaScript does not provide mouse button state query outside of event handlers.
But in principle you can check if body is in :active state thus has mouse pressed on it.

I believe if you need to get clicks before the page finishes loading (and after) you could do it using load instead of ready.

I was unable to track the 'done' button being clicked. It didn't register any clicks or keypresses. I had to addEventListeners for change, focusout and blur using jquery (because the project already was using jquery).
You need to do some kind of this:

This question is kinda old, but I've found a hacky way recently to make this working.
The problem with the 'blur', 'focusout' events is that they fire even if user just tapped outside the input/textarea, and did not press the 'Done' button, in my case, UI should behave differently depending on what exactly have happened.
So to implement it, I've done the next thing:
After showing the keyboard (the input received the focus), add click handler on the window via the addEventListener function. When user clicks on the window, remember the timestamp of the click in the variable (let's call it lastClick = Date.now())
In the blur event handler, set a timeout for 10-20 ms to allow other events happening. Then, after the timeout, check if the blur event happened in a time difference lower for example than 50-100 ms than the lastClick (basically Date.now() - lastClick < 50). If yes, then consider it as a 'Done' button click and do corresponding logic. Otherwise, this is a regular 'blur' event.
The key here is that tapping on keyboard controls (including Done button) does not trigger the click event on the window. And the only other way to make keyboard hide is basically tap on other element of the page and make the textarea lose focus. So by checking when the event happened, we can estimate whether that's a done button click or just blur event.
The answer by oron tech using an event listener is the only one that works cross platform.

attach a blur event to the text box in question. The done fire will fire this event.
The done key is the same as the enter key. So you can listen to a keypress event. I'm writing this using jQuery and i use it in coffee script so I'm trying to convert it back to js in my head. Sorry if there is an error.

The extension runs only on youtube.com so I can't add every element on the page to the trigger and I assume that every page has different element's ids.

Reed's answer works fine, but it triggers the action multiple times. I found this solution that only works on left mouse triggers and executes once per click.

So I am writing some jquery that is basically meant to resize any image when I click on it, meaning I can click on one image and resize it, and then click on any other image and start resizing it as well, but idependently. The code I have to do this is as follows:

This works fine the first time you use it. You can click on an image when there is more than one image present and the image that you clicked on will resize appropriately when you hit the appropriate buttons. Upon clicking the second image to resize it, however, both it and the first image you clicked will start resizing together. This scales with as many images as you can put on the page, i.e., three images will resize together after each has been clicked on.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can stop it? I would like to be able to click each image and be able to resize it independently, no matter the order it was clicked on. I have a feeling this has something to do with the way I am using "this," but I am relatively new to jquery and javascript so I cannot think what it would be.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Essentially the issue here is that each time you click an image, you are binding a new listener to the document.
This means that every time you press a key, you invoke all of the listeners that you have added. What you would want to do is unbind the listeners that are still on the document when you click the next image, which will mean that only one image will be listening for your keypresses at a time.
For example, in this jsfiddle we have the code:

Which adds two listeners to an input element, and as you can see by pressing a key within the element, it causes both listeners to run. Essentially you are adding a new keypress listener each time you click an image, and the old ones are never being cleared out. If you uncomment the unbinding command in the jsfiddle, you will see that only the second alert will be invoked, because the first listener is released. If you only ever want the keys to be listening to one image at a time, then you will want to have something along the lines of $(document).unbind('keypress') at the beginning of the click listener (of course this will clear all keypresses, so if you have other listeners attached to the document you will want to be a bit more careful managing them, for this problem it will be sufficient).
Yes, that's how it will work with this code.
Reason is, in the img.click event handler you attach a new event handler on document.keypress which will resize the image by passing it a reference to 'thisImage'.
What happens is, this document.keypress event handler for this image will continue to live on, even if you click on another image, and will resize the image on each keypress.
These event handlers will continue to accumelate as you keep selecting new images.
What you need to do is remove the previous event handlers when user clicks on a new image.
It appears that the Blur event stops the click event handler from working? I have a combo box where the options only appear when the text field has focus. Choosing an option link should cause an event to occur.

After playing with this for a while, it seems that someone has gone to great lengths to prevent an already-occurred click event from being handled if a blur event makes the clicked element Un-clickable.
For example:

works just fine, but
$('#ShippingGroupListWrapper').css('left','-2000px');
prevents the click event.
This appears to be a bug in Firefox, since making an element un-clickable should prevent future clicks, but not cancel ones that have already occurred when it could be clicked.
Other things that prevent the click event from processing:

$('#ShippingGroupListWrapper').css('display','none');
$('#ShippingGroupListWrapper').css('visibility','hidden');

I've found a few other questions on this site that are having similar problems. There seem to be two solutions floating around:
Use a delay. This is bad because it creates a race condition between the hiding and the click event handler. Its also sloppy.
Use the mousedown event. But this isn't a great solution either since click is the correct event for a link. The behavior of mousedown is counter-intuitive from a UX perspective, particularly since you can't cancel the click by moving the mouse off the element before releasing the button.
I can think of a few more.
3.Use mouseover and mouseout on the link to enable/disable the blur event for the field. This doesn't work with keyboard tabing since the mouse is not involved.
4.The best solution would be something like:

click event triggers after the blur so the link gets hidden. Instead of click use mousedown it will work.

Other alternative is to have some delay before you hide the links on blur event. Its upto you which approach to go for.

This is clearly not the best solution as a mousedown event is not achieved the same way for the user than a click event. Unfortunately, the blur event will cancel out mouseup events as well.
Performing an action that should happen on a click on a mousedown is bad UX. Instead, what's a click effectively made up of? A mousedown and a mouseup.
Therefore, stop the propagation of the mousedown event in the mousedown handler, and perform the action in the mouseup handler.

What you may be looking for is e.relatedTarget. So when clicking the link, e.relatedTarget should get populated with the link element, so in your blur handler, you can choose not to hide the container if the element clicked is within the container (or compare it directly with the link):

If this.menuTarget.classList.add("hidden") is the blur behavior that hides the clickable menu, then I succeeded by waiting 100ms before invoking it.

This allowed the click event to be processed upon the menuTarget DOM before it was hidden.
I know this is a later reply, but I had this same issue, and a lot of these solutions didn't really work in my scenario. mousedown is not functional with forms, it can cause the enter key functionality to change on the submit button. Instead, you can set a variable _mouseclick true in the mousedown, check it in the blur, and preventDefault() if it's true. Then, in the mouseup set the variable false. I did not see issues with this, unless someone can think of any.
I have faced a similar issue while using jQuery blur, click handlers where I had an input name field and a Save button. Used blur event to populate name into a title placeholder. But when we click save immediately after typing the name, only the blur event gets fired and the save btn click event is disregarded.
The hack I used was to tap into the event object we get from blur event and check for event.relatedTarget.

As already discussed in this thread - this is due to blur event blocking click event when fired simultaneously. So I have a click event registered for Save Btn calling a function which is also called when blur event's related Target is the Save button to compensate for the click event not firing.
Note: Didnt notice this issue while using native onclick and onblur handlers - tested in html.
Is it possible to determine whether a user is active on the current web page or, say, focused on a different tab or window?
It seems that if you switch tabs, any JavaScript set on a timeout/interval continues running. It would be nice to be able to 'pause' the events when the user is not on the page.
Would something like attaching a mouseover event to the body work, or would that be too resource-intensive?
You can place onfocus/onblur events on the window.
There's wide support for those events on the window.

Open Web Analytics (and perhaps some other tracking tools) has action tracking
You could keep an alive variable going using mousemove events (assuming the user does not leave the mouse still on the page). When this variable (a timestamp likely) has not been updated in x seconds, you could say the page is not active and pause any script.
As long as you do not do a lot of processing in the body event handler you should be okay. It should just update the variable, and then have a script poll it at a certain interval to do the processing/checks (say every 1000ms).
Attach listeners to mousemove, keyup and scroll to the document.
I use this throttle/debounce function (which works without jQuery, even though it's a jQuery plugin if jQuery is present) to only run code in response to them once in ~250ms, so that you're not firing some code on every pixel of the mouse moving.
You can also use the visibilityState of the document:
