highlight search word using jquery in MVC - javascript

I have MVC controller that returns a list containing a search string.
public ActionResult GetList(string searchString)
{
ViewData["searchString"] = searchString;
if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(searchString))
{
var persons = db.Persons.ToList();
return View(persons);
}
else{
var persons = db.Persons.Where(p=> p.Title.Contains(searchString)).ToList();
return View(persons);
}
}
In the view the list is displayed in a table. I want to highlight the searchString (or at most the td that contains the searchString). The following is my jquery where I attempted to achieve this. I have tried putting this bit of code in a separate .js script or in the view itself and I have also tried to change the code in several ways but it wouldn't work. It appears like the searchString remains null even if the content of my ViewData has changed.
$(document).ready(function () {
var textToHighligt = #ViewData["searchString"];
$("#simpleSearchButton").click(function () {
$("td:contains(textToHighligt)").css("background-color", "yellow");
});
});

I think this:
var textToHighligt = #ViewData["searchString"];
$("td:contains(textToHighligt)").css("background-color", "yellow");
should be concatenated:
var textToHighligt = '#ViewData["searchString"]'; //<---put in quotes
$("td:contains("+textToHighligt+")").css("background-color", "yellow");

I think you can do otherwise if it is not happening in the javascript file , create a hidden field and populate the value from the ViewBag
#Html.Hidden("hiddensearchString", (string)ViewBag.searchString)
For the ViewData
#Html.Hidden("FirstName", ViewData["searchString"])
and then the javascript read the value like this
var searchString = $("#hiddensearchString").val();
In you code you can also try this using of the single quote.
var textToHighligt = '#ViewData["searchString"]';

Reusing Javascript code without repasting it again and again

I have the below code, which looks for the text "UID" and changes it to "UID *"
On my page, there are other terms such as "description", "score" and so on. I would also like to append * to these as well - is there a tidy way to get the below code to edit those as well? Only way I know is to repeat this code block again and again?
<script type="text/javascript">
//Mark UID as Mandatory
var CFN = "UID";
$(document).ready(ExecuteOrDelayUntilScriptLoaded(MainFunction, "sp.js"));
function MainFunction() {
Mandatory();
}
function Mandatory(){
$(".ms-accentText").each(function() {
var text = $(this).text();
$(this).text(text.replace(CFN, 'UID *'));
});
}
</script>
EDIT. I tried the below reply, but this didn't work for me, I have got this code now, but again, doesn't seem to work (its trying to add a * onto "UID" and "Description" where found using a multi variable;
<script type="text/javascript">
//Mark UID as Mandatory
var MandatoryCFs = ["UID", "Description"];
$(document).ready(ExecuteOrDelayUntilScriptLoaded(MainFunction, "sp.js"));
function MainFunction() {
Mandatory();
}
function Mandatory(){
$(".ms-accentText").each(function() {
var text = $(this).text();
$(this).text(text.append(MandatoryCFs, ' *'));
});
}
</script>
Replace multiple strings by using list of| Regex
//Mark UID as Mandatory
var MandatoryCFs = ["UID", "Description"];
$(document).ready(ExecuteOrDelayUntilScriptLoaded(MainFunction, "sp.js"));
function MainFunction() {
Mandatory();
}
function Mandatory(){
$(".ms-accentText").each(function() {
var text = $(this).text();
$(this).text(text.replace(new RegExp(MandatoryCFs.join('|'),'g'), '$& *'));
});
}
or like this if you don't need to the replaced strings to be dynamic:
text.replace(/UID|Description/g, '$& *')

How to get complete data from (html) bootstrap table when pagination is turned on

I am using bootstrap table in my web page and want to get complete textual data from all table cells, when pagination is on. I have tried the following method and it returns all the data:
var data = $('#' + tableID).bootstrapTable('getData')
Now when i traverse data object to get value for every cell it works fine but, for those cells which have some nested html , for example:
<td class="danger">cell 4</td>
<td>
google
</td>
Now, in this case, i want to get value for second cell as google but it returns me whole html as
google
Any idea, how i can get only textual value.
I can't do any server side operation, I have to achieve this using javascript/jquery. I have also tried using jquery:
function getColData(tableID,colIndex) {
var colArray = $('#' + tableID + ' td:nth-child'+'('+colIndex+')').map(function(){
return $(this).text();
}).get();
return colArray
}
it returns data correctly but only which is visible on active page and i want all the data.
Based on your file on JSFiddle I have modified the JS part as follows, this will get you the text on every td(i.e. text or text content) and not the values of their attributes. Basically this traverses through the DOM searching for tags embedded in ones - except for those on the table header - then obtains the text value.
var table = $('#table'), button = $('#button');
button.click(function() {
var data = [];
table.find('tr:not(:first)').each(function(i, row) {
var cols = [];
$(this).find('td').each(function(i, col) {
cols.push($(this).text());
});
data.push(cols);
});
alert(data);
});
You can see it in action here
UPDATE:
This will get you all data regardless of pagination, also it will strip tags and nested tags.
var table = $('#table'), button = $('#button');
button.click(function() {
var messedData = table.bootstrapTable('getData');
var data = [];
$.each(messedData, function(i, row) {
var rowData = {
'name': row['0'],
'star': row['1'],
'forks': row['2'],
'desc': row['3'],
}
for (prop in rowData) {
var tmp = document.createElement("div");
tmp.innerHTML = rowData[prop];
rowData[prop] = tmp.textContent || tmp.innerText || "";
}
data.push(rowData);
});
console.log(data);
});
You can see it here
Since the actual data is coming in as a string, I don't think bootstrap-table can't differentiate it from the other data. The simple solution I can think of is to use substring() to extract the data from the cells that contain custom html.

The alternative is to go through the generated table <td> and use text() to get the text data from the cells.

Update div when writing text does not work as expected

My goal is to write content in a textarea and display exactly what I am writing without have to refresh the page each letter that I type shows immediately well it is not working for some reason.
HTML:
<textarea id="Q&A" name="txtarea" rows="4" cols="50"></textarea>
<div id="out"></div>
Js:
function generate() {
var reader = new commonmark.Parser();
var writer = new commonmark.HtmlRenderer();
var parsed = reader.parse(text);
text = writer.render();
document.getElementById("out").innerHTML = text
}
document.getElementById("Q&A").addEventListener("input", function () {
generate(this.value);
});
When I try to update the div with the id of out to what I am typing using JavaScript, it does not work.
I don't know what the commonmark.Parser() does in your code. But the issue i see is, When you are calling the generate method, you are passing the value of the input field. But in your generate method signature, you don't have a parameter to accept that.
Add a parameter to your generate() method to accept the value passed in.
function generate(text) {
//do something else on text with your commonmark
document.getElementById("out").innerHTML = text;
}
Here is a working sample.
and you forgot to pass the argument parsed to the render function:
You had: text = writer.render(); I changed it to text = writer.render(parsed);
I figured it out i forgot to have text pasted in as a argument in the generate function and I forgot to pas parsed into the render function
Here is the final code:
function generate(text) {
var reader = new commonmark.Parser();
var writer = new commonmark.HtmlRenderer();
var parsed = reader.parse(text);
text = writer.render(parsed);
document.getElementById("out").innerHTML = text
}
document.getElementById("Q&A").addEventListener("input", function () {
generate(this.value);
});

Compare variable values in scriplet and javascript

I have a jsp file with a scriptlet tag, I am getting the values of .properties file in it .I have a java script tag in which I am storing the value from the dropdown in a variable. On selecting some value in the dropdown I want to compare it with the property in the scriptlet and if it is equal a value from properties file must populate in my textbox. I have tried the following code but it is not working
My scriplet tag
<%
Properties prop = new Properties();
String propFileName = "server. properties";
InputStream inputStream = getClass().getClassLoader().getResourceAsStream(propFileName);
if (inputStream != null) {
prop.load(inputStream);
} else {
throw new FileNotFoundException("property file '" + propFileName + "'not found in the classpath");
}
String appName = prop.getProperty("Demo_name");
String link = prop.getProperty("Demo_Links");
String database = prop.getProperty("DemoApps_DataBase");
%>
JavaScript
<script type="text/javascript">
function OnSelectionChange(serverName) {
var selectedOption = serverName.options[serverName.selectedIndex];
var txtbox=document.getElementById('serverLink');
var appName=<%=appName%>;
var links=<%=link%>
alert(appName.value);
if(selectedOption.value==appName.value){
txtbox.value=links.value;
}
}
</script>
Try this code. Is Your selected value is case sensitive?
<script type="text/javascript">
function OnSelectionChange(serverName) {
var selectedOption = serverName.options[serverName.selectedIndex].value;
var txtbox=document.getElementById('serverLink');
var demoName='<%=demoServer%>';
var testName='<%=testingServer%>';
var PNGName='<%=pngServer%>';
var DCPName='<%=dcpServer%>';
var demoLink='<%=demoLink%>';
var testLink='<%=testingLink%>';
var pngLink='<%=pngLink%>';
var dcpLink='<%=dcpLink%>';
if(selectedOption==appName){
txtbox.value=links;
}
if(selectedOption==PNGName){
txtbox.value=pngLink;
}
if(selectedOption==DCPName){
txtbox.value=dcpLink;
}
if(selectedOption==demoName){
txtbox.value=demoLink;
}
}
</script>
Using scriplets populate the values in a hidden field from your scriplet like :
<input id=hiddenPops type="hidden" name="Language" value="English">prop1=value2;prop2=value3</input>
In your javascript get the value of the above field using getElementById(hiddenPops )
Split the value string into array or as desired and you can work with it to match the keys and fetch the corresponding values.
Note: Its a solution but your approach is not great. Try to use modern JS frameworks which could allow you to talk to the server directly or simply use Ajax

write GET URL variable to page using javascript

I have a form which contains a wysiwyg editor. The form data is sent to a page using a GET method in the form.
How would i decode(to keep the DIV and BR tags) in the variable and print it out on the page using Javascript?
Any help would be appreciated
The equivalent of decode would be unescape(), you should be able to something like this:
(function(){
document.$_GET = [];
var urlHalves = String(document.location).split('?');
if(urlHalves[1]){
var urlVars = urlHalves[1].split('&');
for(var i=0; i<=(urlVars.length); i++){
if(urlVars[i]){
var urlVarPair = urlVars[i].split('=');
document.$_GET[urlVarPair[0]] = urlVarPair[1];
}
}
}
})();
document.write(unescape(document.$_GET['varname']));
Maybe you should try this script: http://www.webtoolkit.info/javascript-url-decode-encode.html
It encodes decodes everything.
