I am trying to iterate a JSON structure in a recursive way. I checked other forums / stackoverflow questions but I seem to have a strange problem.
So what comes from the REST service is :
{/Envelope=
{/Envelope/Header = {},
/Envelope/Body =
{/Envelope/Body/ns:GetAddressForPostCodeResponse=
{/Envelope/Body/ns:GetAddressForPostCodeResponse/ns:maximumAddressMatches = ? ,
/Envelope/Body/ns:GetAddressForPostCodeResponse/ns:postalAddress =
{/Envelope/Body/ns:GetAddressForPostCodeResponse/ns:postalAddress/ns:apartment = ? ,
...
Basically I send back a Map from SpringMVC with a String key and having an other Map as value.
The (angular) code:
$scope.getHtml = function(node, isAdd) {
if (isAdd) {
var html = "<ul id='tree1'>";
} else {
var html = "<ul>";
}
//angular.forEach(node, function(value, key) {
for (var key in node) {
if (node.hasOwnProperty(key)) {
var value = node[key];
console.log(key + " : " + value);
console.log(node.hasOwnProperty(key));
if (key != "$promise" && key != "$resolved") {
html += "<li><input type='checkbox' id='" + key + "'><label>" + key + "</label>";
html += $scope.getHtml(value, false);
}
}
//});
}
html += "</ul>";
delete node;
return html;
};
As you can see there is a recursive call.
And what I can see in the console:
true serviceDiscovery.controller.js:39
"0 : ?" serviceDiscovery.controller.js:38
true serviceDiscovery.controller.js:39
"0 : ?" serviceDiscovery.controller.js:38
... (the same two rows some thousands times)
"0 : ?" serviceDiscovery.controller.js:38
true serviceDiscovery.controller.js:39
"Error: too much recursion
$scope.getHtml/<#http://localhost:8080/management-app-1.0.0-SNAPSHOT/resources/js/serviceDiscovery.controller.js:37:21
r#http://localhost:8080/management-app-1.0.0-SNAPSHOT/resources/js/angularjs/angular.min.js:7:288
So there is an infinite loop but how...? I tried the angular.forEach too.
Any idea?
------------- UPDATE -------------
Hmm, my mistake, sorry. I only need the recursive call if the value is a map (object) and not a String.

I have a recusive function that is supposed to loop through a json object and output the expression. However, my recusion seems to be off because it's outputting field1 != '' AND field3 == '' when it should be outputting field1 != '' AND field2 == '' AND field3 == ''
I've tried a couple different things and the only way I can get it to work is by creating a global variable outstring instead of passing it to the function. Where am I off? When I step through it, i see a correct result but once the stack reverses, it start resetting outstring and then stack it back up again but leaves out the middle (field2).
JSFiddle
function buildString(json, outstring) {
var andor = json.condition;
for (var rule in json.rules) {
if (json.rules[rule].hasOwnProperty("condition")) {
buildString(json.rules[rule], outstring);
} else {
var field = json.rules[rule].id;
var operator = json.rules[rule].operator;
var value = json.rules[rule].value == null ? '' : json.rules[rule].value;
outstring += field + ' ' + operator + ' ' + value;
if (rule < json.rules.length - 1) {
outstring += ' ' + andor + ' ';
}
}
}
return outstring;
}
var jsonObj = {"condition":"AND","rules":[{"id":"field1","operator":"!= ''","value":null},{"condition":"AND","rules":[{"id":"field2","operator":"== ''","value":null}]},{"id":"field3","operator":"== ''","value":null}]};
$('#mydiv').text(buildString(jsonObj, ""));
The function has a return of a string.
When you call the function recursively from within itself, you aren't doing anything with the returned string from that instance, just calling the function which has nowhere to return to
Change:
if (json.rules[rule].hasOwnProperty("condition")) {
buildString(json.rules[rule], outstring);
}
To
if (json.rules[rule].hasOwnProperty("condition")) {
// include the returned value in concatenated string
outstring += buildString(json.rules[rule], outstring);
}
DEMO
Why so complicated?
function buildString(obj) {
return "condition" in obj?
obj.rules.map(buildString).join(" " + obj.condition + " "):
obj.id + " " + obj.operator + " " + string(obj.value);
}
//this problem occurs quite often, write a utility-function.
function string(v){ return v == null? "": String(v) }
Situation : I receive JSON array from jQuery <-> PHP Ajax request. Here's structure of unparsed JSON aray :
{"Focus":{"id":2,"brand":"Ford","name":"Focus"}}
And after using JSON.parse(json); the structure looks like :
Focus: Object
brand: "Ford"
id: 2
name: "Focus"
Problem : I want to access all array's '1st tier' elements and use them like an object, but none of the following ways works :
for (var entity in dataTable)
{
formattedText += entity['brand'] + " " + entity['name'] + "<br>";
OR
formattedText += entity.brand + " " + entity.name + "<br>";
OR
formattedText += dataTable[0]['brand'] + " " + dataTable[0]['name'] + "<br>";
}
Any solutions how to read values of all object in this array?
The for..in loop uses keys and does not return the elements themself: for (var key in dataTable)You would then access each element with dataTable[key]. The key is actually the name of the Element.
You where using it as you would use a for..of loop, but that is a new feature not supported in all Browsers yet.
Demo:
var dataTable = {"Focus":{"id":2,"brand":"Ford","name":"Focus"}}
var formattedText = ""
for (var key in dataTable)
{
formattedText += dataTable[key]['brand'] + " " + dataTable[key]['name'] + "<br>";
}
document.write(formattedText)
Object.keys will return array of all the keys of the object
You can loop(forEach/for-loop) through the keys to get the expected output.
Using forEach:
var dataTable = {
"Focus": {
"id": 2,
"brand": "Ford",
"name": "Focus"
}
}
var keys = Object.keys(dataTable);
var str = '';
keys.forEach(function(item) {
str += dataTable[item].brand + " " + dataTable[item].name;
});
alert(str);
Using for-loop:
var dataTable = {
"Focus": {
"id": 2,
"brand": "Ford",
"name": "Focus"
}
}
var keys = Object.keys(dataTable);
var str = '';
for (var i = 0, len = keys.length; i < len; i++) {
str += dataTable[keys[i]].brand + " " + dataTable[keys[i]].name;
}
alert(str);
The correct syntax to write this would be:
When you loop, you'll get the key name in the variable entity and then use that to get the value, also, you need to access the associative array inside the first key i.e. Focus
var dataTable = JSON.parse('{"Focus":{"id":2,"brand":"Ford","name":"Focus"}}');
var formattedText = '';
for (var entity in dataTable.Focus) {
formattedText += dataTable.Focus['brand'] + " " + dataTable.Focus['name'] + "<br>";
}
Sounds like you're using each function in a wrong way. in your each function change arguments to key and value like this:
$.each(dataTable, function (key, value) {
//access key and values here
});
In your case u should iterate again over key and values of your key values.
Okay, that title will sound a bit crazy. I have an object, which I build from a bunch of inputs (from the user). I set them according to their value received, but sometimes they are not set at all, which makes them null. What I really want to do, it make an item generator for WoW. The items can have multiple attributes, which all look the same to the user. Here is my example:
+3 Agility
+5 Stamina
+10 Dodge
In theory, that should just grab my object's property name and key value, then output it in the same fashion. However, how do I setup that if-statement?
Here is what my current if-statement MADNESS looks like:
if(property == "agility") {
text = "+" + text + " Agility";
}
if(property == "stamina") {
text = "+" + text + " Stamina";
}
if(property == "dodge") {
text = "+" + text + " Dodge";
}
You get that point right? In WoW there are A TON of attributes, so it would suck that I would have to create an if-statement for each, because there are simply too many. It's basically repeating itself, but still using the property name all the way. Here is what my JSFiddle looks like: http://jsfiddle.net/pm2328hx/ so you can play with it yourself. Thanks!
EDIT: Oh by the way, what I want to do is something like this:
if(property == "agility" || property == "stamina" || ....) {
text = "+" + text + " " + THE_ABOVE_VARIABLE_WHICH_IS_TRUE;
}
Which is hacky as well. I definitely don't want that.
if(['agility','stamina','dodge'].indexOf(property) !== -1){
text = "+" + text + " " + property;
}
If you need the first letter capitalized :
if(['agility','stamina','dodge'].indexOf(property) !== -1){
text = "+" + text + " " + property.charAt(0).toUpperCase() + property.substr(1);
}
UPDATE per comment:
If you already have an array of all the attributes somewhere, use that instead
var myatts = [
'agility',
'stamina',
'dodge'
];
if(myatts.indexOf(property) !== -1){
text = "+" + text + " " + property.charAt(0).toUpperCase() + property.substr(1);
}
UPDATE per next comment:
If you already have an object with the attributes as keys, you can use Object.keys(), but be sure to also employ hasOwnProperty
var item = {};
item.attribute = {
agility:100,
stamina:200,
dodge:300
};
var property = "agility";
var text = "";
if(Object.keys(item.attribute).indexOf(property) !== -1){
if(item.attribute.hasOwnProperty(property)){
text = "+" + text + " " + property.charAt(0).toUpperCase() + property.substr(1);
}
}

UPDATE to answer intended question instead of asked question
How do I expand the following object into following string? Note: the attributes are dynamic.
Object:
var item = {};
item.attribute = {
agility:100,
stamina:200,
dodge:300
};
String:
+ 100 Agility + 200 Stamina + 300 Dodge
Answer:
var text = "";
for(var property in item.attribute){
if(item.attribute.hasOwnProperty(property)){
if(text.length > 0) text += " ";
text += "+ " + item.attribute[property] + " " + property.charAt(0).toUpperCase() + property.substr(1);
}
}
It's unclear how you're getting these values an storing them internally - but assuming you store them in a hash table:
properties = { stamina: 10,
agility: 45,
...
}
Then you could display it something like this:
var text = '';
for (var key in properties) {
// use hasOwnProperty to filter out keys from the Object.prototype
if (h.hasOwnProperty(k)) {
text = text + ' ' h[k] + ' ' + k + '<br/>';
}
}
After chat, code came out as follows:
var item = {};
item.name = "Thunderfury";
item.rarity = "legendary";
item.itemLevel = 80;
item.equip = "Binds when picked up";
item.unique = "Unique";
item.itemType = "Sword";
item.speed = 1.90;
item.slot = "One-handed";
item.damage = "36 - 68";
item.dps = 27.59;
item.attributes = {
agility:100,
stamina:200,
dodge:300
};
item.durability = 130;
item.chanceOnHit = "Blasts your enemy with lightning, dealing 209 Nature damage and then jumping to additional nearby enemies. Each jump reduces that victim's Nature resistance by 17. Affects 5 targets. Your primary target is also consumed by a cyclone, slowing its attack speed by 20% for 12 sec.";
item.levelRequirement = 60;
function build() {
box = $('<div id="box">'); //builds in memory
for (var key in item) {
if (item.hasOwnProperty(key)) {
if (key === 'attributes') {
for (var k in item.attributes) {
if (item.attributes.hasOwnProperty(k)) {
box.append('<span class="' + k + '">+' + item.attributes[k] + ' ' + k + '</span>');
}
}
} else {
box.append('<span id="' + key + '" class="' + item[key] + '">' + item[key] + '</span>');
}
}
}
$("#box").replaceWith(box);
}
build();

I want to navigate each property in the JSON below in JavaScript. The below JSON contains two records for reference but in real time will have numerous such records.
{"Record_0":[{"Status":"CREATED","CreatorLoginId":"sandhya","Name":"G1"}],"Record_1":[{"Status":"CREATED","CreatorLoginId":"San","Name":"G2"}]}
I want to get the values of the fields "Status", "CreatorLoginId" and "Name" to assign them to something else.
How should I do it?
var myJSON = JSON.parse('{"Record_0":[{"Status":"CREATED","CreatorLoginId":"sandhya","Name":"G1"}],"Record_1":[{"Status":"CREATED","CreatorLoginId":"San","Name":"G2"}]}');
for(var pr in myJSON)
{
console.log(myJSON[pr][0].Status);
console.log(myJSON[pr][0].CreatorLoginId);
console.log(myJSON[pr][0].Name);
}
Print how? If you mean output to the js console it would be
for (index in object) {
console.log(index + ': ' + object[index]);
}
If you mean add it to a web page, just replace console.log with a little markup:
var parent = document.getElementById('parentID');
for (index in object) {
parent.innerHTML += index + ': ' + object[index] + '<br>';
}
For nested objects (including arrays)
function print(object, parent) {
for (index in object) {
if (typeof object[index] == 'object') {
print(object[index});
}
parent.innerHTML += index + ': ' + object[index] + '<br>';
}
}
EDIT: don't forget to JSON.parse(): the string first before iterating
//Iterating through the groups
for (var currentRecord in groupInformation)
{
store.data.items.push({serial: {}, groupName: {}, createdBy: {}, status: {} });
store.data.items[iNoOfGroups].serial = iNoOfGroups + 1;
store.data.items[iNoOfGroups].groupName = groupInformation[currentRecord][0].Name;
store.data.items[iNoOfGroups].createdBy = groupInformation[currentRecord][0].CreatorLoginId;
store.data.items[iNoOfGroups].status = groupInformation[currentRecord][0].Status;
iNoOfGroups++;
}
var myJSON = JSON.parse('{"Record_0":[{"Status":"CREATED","CreatorLoginId":"sandhya","Name":"G1"}],"Record_1":[{"Status":"CREATED","CreatorLoginId":"San","Name":"G2"}]}');
for(var key in myJSON){
console.log(myJSON[key][0].Status);
console.log(myJSON[key][0].CreatorLoginId);
console.log(myJSON[key][0].Name);
}`
I'm making an ajax call to retrieve some JSON objects. I get them right. but the problem is when I want to create a select element from returned JSON, it doesn't create one or seemed to be.
My JavaScript so far:
jQuery("#make").change(function () {
var value = $(this).val();
jQuery.getJSON("<?php echo site_url('ajax/get/models'); ?>", {
makeId: value
},
function (data) {
if (data != "false") {
var modelsSelect = jQuery.createElement('select');
var modelsOptions = "";
var id;
var model
jQuery.each(data, function () {
jQuery.each(this, function (key, value) {
if (key == "id") {
id = value;
} else {
model = value;
}
});
modelsOptions += "<option value=" + id + ">" + model + "</option>"
});
modelsSelect.innerHTML = modelsOptions;
jQuery("#model").html = modelsSelect;
} else {
alert("false");
}
});
});
my returned JSON Format:
Object { id="28", model="test model"}
There could be n number of JSON objects in returned response from ajax call.
There is no createElement method in jQuery
jQuery.createElement should be document.createElement
Also no need to loop over the objects' properties, you can access them by the key directly
jQuery.each(data, function (index, item) {
modelsOptions += "<option value=" + item.id + ">" + item.model + "</option>"
});
Change this
jQuery("#model").html = modelsSelect;
to
jQuery("#model").html(modelsSelect);
Reference
.html()
