My javascript will not load my defined DIV? - javascript

I am new to coding and trying to implement some javascript into my site.
I have found this code online that does what I want it to do on jsfiddle and it works perfectly. When I copy the code exactly from jsfiddle to my coding program it wont load what I want it to load. I have included the HTML, CSS and JS to show how I am trying to get this working and how it should work.
Here is my javascript:
var startY = 70;
$(window).scroll(function () {
checkY();
});
function checkY() {
if ($(window).scrollTop() > startY) {
$('#skills-left').slideDown();
}
}
Code working on jsfiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/rkerswell/jrpof73y/
When this code is transferred over to my program the code doesn't load the animation as described.
Am I missing something?

As mentioned by #tabz100
Make sure you wrap your javascript in this to ensure the code is run after the DOM elements are present. JSFiddle does this automatically.
$(function(){
// Put code here
});

Make sure you add the html code into the body tag when you copy it into the code editor and link jquery in the head tag.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.11.2/jquery.min.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>

Javascript function works on JSFiddle but not in my HTML document?

So, I found a code/function I wanted to use on this site here: stackoverflow
I then copied the code from the second answer, did some small changes and tested if it actually worked, and I found out it did not. All of the functions from the link work on JSFiddle tho, but none of them work for me in my html document.
I did < script>, didn't work. I tried to make a separate .js document, but the code was still not working.
<body>
<div id="bokse2"></div>
<div id="boksi"></div>
<script src="test.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script>
$(function() {
$('#bokse2').click(function() {
$('#boksi').css('margin-left', '-=10px');
});
});
</script>
</body>
The big box (boksi) should move 10 pixels to the left by clicking on the smaller box (bokse2). Just like it does here: JSFiddle
You are missing the include to the jQuery
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js">

Can you just openly mix javascript with html while using html5?

So, I'm trying to make an html5 website, and I'm trying to make a popup, "error" message using javascript, but I'm currently using html. and so when I tried
alert("nope wrong >:D")
and it didn't work. it was inside of a script tag but it still didn't work and so I'm not sure if I'm just meant to use html for that. the question overall is, do I have to use something like
<!DOCTYPE html>
like when youre making an html website or just like
<!-- container -->
or what I need help. thx in advance for any help I get :)
<!DOCTYPE html> & <!-- container --> have nothing to do with javascript notifacations. You are correct about the <script></script> part. You just need to put it in a function:
<script>
function myAlert() {
alert("nope wrong >:D");
}
</script>
and then to call that function, use a button:
<button onclick="myAlert()">Click Me</button>
or call it on the body so when the page loads you get notified:
<body onload="myAlert">
EDIT: Here is a runnable code snippet
<button onclick="myAlert()">Click Me</button>
<script>
function myAlert() {
alert("nope wrong >:D");
}
</script>
also, good luck!

focus() won't work - query

I have some input field, and I call this in my js file
$(document).ready(function () {$('#input_id').focus(); });
but it doesn't launch. Even, when I launch it in my chrome console, I get no focus. How can it be
This is working sample for a text input, just match with your page code and see what you are missing as compared to this.
I assume that you have referred jquery js already and any other jquery functions work well in your page.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.10.2/jquery.min.js">
</script>
<script>
$(document).ready(function ()
{
$('#input_id').focus();
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
<input type="text" id="input_id"/>
</body>
</html>
In any case please make sure that there is no js error in your page as
$('#input_id').focus(); must work fine individually, so only thing looks wrong could be reference to jquery, else some js error before code reaches to .focus() call on input_id.
Also you can validate if on your page focus for the input working fine, for this keep $('#input_id').focus(); in a script tag just before your body page ends/closes,
to make sure input control, jquery reference are placed correctly and page has no js errors, if this way too focus doesn't work then something is wrong with any of these 3.

where to embed javascript section in a html page [duplicate]

This question already has answers here:
when and where to put javascript in html
(7 answers)
Closed 9 years ago.
the thing is i'm unable to figure out where to embed javascript in html page whether in head section or body section.
example 1:
<html>
<head>
<title>events</title>
<script>
document.getElementById("b").onclick=function(){displayDate()};
function displayDate()
{
document.getElementById("demo").innerHTML=Date();
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
<p id="demo"></p>
<button id="b">new</button>
</body>
</html>
in the above example I placed script tags in head section but it is not working.
example: 2
<html>
<head>
<title>events</title>
<script>
function upper()
{
var x=document.getElementById("t");
x.value=x.value.toUpperCase();
}
</script>
</head>
<body >
enter some text:<input type="text" id="t" onChange="upper()"/>
</body>
</html>
in the second example I placed the javascript in head section it is working properly.first example demonstrates that on clicking a button date will be displayed in the second example in a text box when data is entered and if we come out of the box the letters in the box will we converted to uppercase.
To have it more readable I prefer to always place JavaScript in the head section. If you need to access elements from there, use the window.onload event:
<head>
<title>events</title>
<script type="text/javascript">
window.onload = function() {
document.getElementById("b").onclick = function() {
displayDate();
};
};
function displayDate()
{
document.getElementById("demo").innerHTML=Date();
}
</script>
</head>
This would work just fine.
Your second example worked because you just defined a function, you didn't try to access any element.
You can put it in the head. The problem is that your examples are not the same. The first one doesn't work because the current date is retrieved by calling Date(), when it should be new Data().getDate(). The second example works because the code is valid.
The problem you're running into is that you're trying to reference an element before it is loaded into the DOM.
When you're putting the script in the HEAD tag, the dom hasn't been loaded yet and the document.getElementById won't find what you're looking for.
You have a few different options to deal with this. You can put the script at the end of the page, which will work for your small example here.
Probably a better option is to take a look at learning/using jquery or another js utility. Jquery makes it easy to solve this issue by giving you a "ready" event. This ready event will be triggered when the DOM is fully loaded. So:
$(document).ready(
function()
{
$("#demo").html((new Date()).toString());
});
Is all you really need. With this approach, it doesn't matter where the script it on the page.

javascript tag trigger - code position on page

i use that tag to alert me when a tag has been shows up
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
<script type="text/javascript">
document.getElementsByTagName('iframe')[0].onload = function() {
alert('loaded');
}
</script>
<iframe></iframe>
</body>
</html>
strange , since this code working :
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
<iframe></iframe>
<script type="text/javascript">
document.getElementsByTagName('iframe')[0].onload = function() {
alert('loaded');
}
</script>
</body>
</html>
why the Js need to under the tag to work?
what's the problem here?
Because the code in a script tag is executed immediately. And in the first example the iframe doesn't exist at that time. But what you can do is to wrap you code into an onload (for the main page) event. E.g.:
window.onload = function() {
//your code
}
Then it doesn't matter where the code is placed.
Iframe tag does not exist at the moment you are trying to access it.
You may check that by simply alerting array length, like
alert(document.getElementsByTagName('iframe'));
Have you thought about executing your javascript after the page is loaded? You may use some frameworks like jQuery to facilitate crossbrowser issues. Or just put all your javascript code to the very bottom of body.
