My page is receiving JSON encoded data from a php script. Using my browsers dev network tool I can see the data is as follows:

I have an input tag on the page called

Using jquery, I would like to store the value for "id" from the json string in the value attribute of my input tag.
There is a JS script that is already processing the "state", "message" and "result" objects from the json string. If possible I would like to leave that script alone and use a separate one to extract the JSON object "id". How would I do this?

Assuming this is actually JSON, you'd have to parse it first... For instance, say your JSON was linked to a reference (variable):

From here, you'd have to parse the JSON into a JavaScript object with JSON.parse:
var myJSON = JSON.parse(myJSON);
Then, from here you can select the values as a JavaScript object.

It would be best to start by giving your input tag an ID attribute AS WELL AS a name attribute so it can be uniquely referenced.
So whatever var you populate with the JSON object (let's just call it: var jSn):

JSON.stringify turns a Javascript object into JSON text and stores that JSON text in a string.
JSON.parse turns a string of JSON text into a Javascript object.

Assuming your server side script doesn't set the proper Content-Type: application/json response header you will need to indicate to jQuery that this is JSON by using the dataType: 'json' parameter.
You should not use data variable in $.each(). Then you could use the $.each() function to loop through the data:

you are using multiple ", combine it with the single one ', this is a syntax error, try to check the code on an editor such as Atom, to avoid this kind of errors
Stringify converts an object to a string. Have you tried passing data an object instead of a string? Try replacing JSON.stringify(data), with data?
As the title suggests I would like to load remote data once only.
I thought about loading a data with independent ajax call and set it "locally" at the control but wonder if there is more "built in" way to do so...

I might have misinterpreted your question. if you wish to load all data once, then use that is Select2, there is no built in functionality to do that.
Your suggestion to do a single query, and then use that stored data in Select2 would be the way to go.

I am trying to use JQPlot within a VB.NET application under .NET 3.5. On a button click, using jquery, I am trying to populate the JQPlot Chart with JSON derived data using a ASP.NET Webservices Source file (which is part of the solution).
The JSON data is sent by the web service but when it is presented to JQPlot I get the javascript error 'No Data Specified' which is generated by JQPlot code.

The method signature for your datarender (i.e. ajaxDataRender) is wrong. The signature should look like this:

In your example you are passing the datarenderer "ret" which is not a function with the correct datarender signature. Also the jsonurl you are passing to getElectricDataJSON() is redundant as at no point in your code is the data from "AccountsService.asmx/GetJSONData" persisted to "./jsondata.txt".

in success function you have to parse json to get actual data e.g.

Simple problem here. In your controller, you're actually assigning the list to a variable named Data inside the response data collection. Just because your success function takes a data parameter doesn't mean that the Data value you set in your controller automagically will become the data variable.
As your Data list is inside the data object: you need to do:
data.Data
inside your success function. Try this:
