json-encode from mysql return null - javascript

I am trying to integrate an image with movie titles in my auto-complete text-box.
For this, I have crawled list of movie titles and their poster links (link to the image of movie) in table "film_Posters" of mysql database.
Question:
Why I get null? Sorry if this question is asked many times, but I really couldn't fix it yet...
This is my php file:
<?php
if (isset($_GET['term'])){
$arr = array();
try {
$conn=new PDO('mysql:dbname=imdb;host=localhost', 'user', 'pass');
$conn->setAttribute(PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE, PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION);
$stmt = $conn->prepare('SELECT DISTINCT movieName, posterLink FROM film_Posters WHERE movieName LIKE :term limit 0, 10');
$stmt->execute(array('term' => '%'.$_GET['term'].'%'));
while($row = $stmt->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)) {
$arr[]=array('value'=>$row['movieName'],
'label'=>$row['movieName'],
'icon'=>$row['posterLink']);
}
} catch(PDOException $e) {
echo 'ERROR: ' . $e->getMessage();
}
echo json_encode($arr);
}
?>
and this is my html/javascript file:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<link href="http://code.jquery.com/ui/1.10.4/themes/smoothness/jquery-ui.min.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.11.0.min.js"></script>
<script src="http://code.jquery.com/ui/1.10.4/jquery-ui.min.js"></script>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>JS Bin</title>
</head>
<body>
<fieldset id = "q27"> <legend class="Q27"></legend>
<label class="question"> What are your favorite movies?<span>*</span></label>
<div class="fieldset content">
<div id="m_scents">
<label style="margin-bottom:10px;" for="m_scnts">
<input type="text" id="m_scnt" size="20" name="q27[]"
value="" placeholder="Enter text" />
</label>
</div>
</div>
</fieldset>
<script type = text/javascript>
(function($){
var $title = $('#m_scnt');
$(function () {
var arr = <?php echo json_encode($rows); ?>;
});
$title.autocomplete({
minLength: 2,
source: testfilmsauto.php,
focus: function( event, ui ) {
$title.val( ui.item.label );
return false;
}
});
$title.data( "ui-autocomplete" )._renderItem = function( ul, item ) {
var $li = $('<li>'),
$img = $('<img>');
$img.attr({ //I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THIS PART
src: <?php echo $rows['posterLink']?>,
alt: <?php echo $rows['movieName']?>
});
$li.attr('data-value', item.label);
$li.append('<a href="#">');
$li.find('a').append($img).append(item.label);
return $li.appendTo(ul);
};
})(jQuery);
</script>
</body>
</html>
UPDATE:
Here is the updated php file with the answers from #meda and #marc:
<?php
if (isset($_GET['term'])){
try {
$conn=new PDO('mysql:dbname=imdb;host=localhost', 'user', 'pass');
$conn->setAttribute(PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE, PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION);
$stmt = $conn->prepare('SELECT DISTINCT movieName, posterLink FROM film_Posters WHERE movieName LIKE :term limit 0, 10');
$stmt->execute(array('term' => '%'.$_GET['term'].'%'));
$rows = $stmt->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC);
} catch(PDOException $e) {
echo 'ERROR: ' . $e->getMessage();
}
echo json_encode($rows);
}
?>
Now, I don't see null message any more, but auto-complete doesn't work at all.. I think the problem is related to javascript part... I really appreciate any help.

You're doing your fetch loop wrong:
while($row = $stmt->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)) {
^^^^^^^^
fetchAll() returns ALL of the rows as an array of arrays, e.g.
$rows = array(
0 => array( contents of row #1)
1 => array( contents of row #2)
Which means the while() loop is utterly pointless. fetchAll will work only ONCE anyways, so there's no point in looping. All you need is
$rows = $stmt->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)
echo json_encode($rows);
And then in your client-side javascript:
text_to_display = data_from_server[0].movieName;

Here is all you need for the pdo Code:
PHP
if (isset($_GET['term'])){
$rows = array();
try {
$conn=new PDO('mysql:dbname=imdb;host=localhost', 'user', 'pass');
$conn->setAttribute(PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE, PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION);
$sql = 'SELECT DISTINCT movieName, posterLink
FROM film_Posters
WHERE movieName LIKE :term limit 0, 10';
$stmt = $conn->prepare($sql);
$stmt->execute(array('term' => '%'.$_GET['term'].'%'));
$rows = $stmt->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC);
} catch(PDOException $e) {
echo 'ERROR: ' . $e->getMessage();
}
echo json_encode($rows);
}
As for the javascript, I don't see any request. You should be performing POST or GET ajax request, this is way it is null
jQuery:
(function($){
var $movie = $('#m_scnt');
var movies = "";
$.ajax({
dataType: "json",
url: 'auto.php',
success: function(response){
movies = response;
alert(JSON.stringify(response));
$movie.autocomplete({
minLength: 0,
source: movies,
focus: function( event, ui ) {
$movie.val( ui.item.label );
return false;
}
});
$movie.data( "ui-autocomplete" )._renderItem = function( ul, item ) {
var $li = $('<li>'),
$img = $('<img>');
$img.attr({
src: 'https://path/to/your/images/' + item.posterLink,
alt: item.label
});
$li.attr('data-value', item.label);
$li.append('<a href="#">');
$li.find('a').append($img).append(item.label);
return $li.appendTo(ul);
};
}
});
})(jQuery);

Fetching data using onChange jquery ajax issue

here in my code i am trying to fetch and display the data after selecting a option from the dropdown using onChange, fetching data from a PHP file and via ajax displaying it in textarea in same select.php file but unfortunately it is not working out for me am quit confused were i made a mistake, please help me out on this.
select.php
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#channel").change(function(){
$.post("ajax.php", { channel: $(this).val() })
.success(function(data) {
$(".result").html(data);
});
});
});
</script>
</head>
<div class="col-sm-6 form-group">
<select class="chosen-select form-control" id = 'channel' name="ProductCategoryID" value="<?php echo set_value('ProductCategoryID'); ?>" required>
<option>Select Item code</option>
<?php
foreach($itemlist as $row)
{
echo '<option value="1234">'.$row->ItemCode.'</option>';
}
?>
</select>
</div>
<div class="col-sm-12 form-group result"></div>
ajax.php
<?php
define('HOST','localhost');
define('USER','***');
define('PASS','***');
define('DB','***');
$response = array();
$conn = mysqli_connect(HOST,USER,PASS,DB) or die('Unable to Connect');
//get value from page
$channel = $_POST['channel'];
$query = "SELECT * FROM gst_itemmaster where ItemCode = '$channel' ";
$result = mysqli_query($conn,$query);
$msg = '';
while($row = mysqli_fetch_array($result)) {
$msg = $msg. '<textarea type="text" class="form-control" name="Description"></textarea>'.$row['ItemDescription'].'</textarea>';
}
echo $msg;
while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
$msg = $msg. '<textarea type="text" class="form-control" name="Description"></textarea>'.$row['ItemDescription'].'</textarea>';
}
Try using:
while($row = mysqli_fetch_array($result)) {
$msg = $msg. '<textarea type="text" class="form-control" name="Description"></textarea>'.$row['ItemDescription'].'</textarea>';
}
May be it would help
replace,
$.post("ajax.php", { channel: $(this).val() })
with
$.post("ajax.php", { 'channel': $(this).val() })
$.post("ajax.php", { channel: $(this).val() },function(data) {
$(".result").html(data);
});
Please remove .success(function(data){ }) from the code and it will work :)
Try to initiate $msg first and use mysqli module.
define('HOST','localhost');
define('USER','***');
define('PASS','***');
define('DB','***');
$response = array();
$conn = mysqli_connect(HOST,USER,PASS,DB) or die('Unable to Connect');
//get value from page
$channel = $_POST['channel'];
$query = "SELECT * FROM gst_itemmaster where ItemCode =$channel";
$result = mysqli_query($conn,$query);
$msg = '';
while($row = mysqli_fetch_array($result)) {
$msg = $msg. '<textarea type="text" class="form-control" name="Description"></textarea>'.$row['ItemDescription'].'</textarea>';
}
echo $msg;
UPDATE
Update your post request with:
$.post("ajax.php",
{ channel: $(this).val() },
function(data) {
$(".result").html(data);
}
);
OR
$.post("ajax.php",
{ channel: $(this).val() },
successCallback
);
function successCallback(data){
//process data..
}

Alright. I was still missing the following code from you, so you'll have to add these yourself:
The HTML element with parameter id="id" needed for $('#id').val(text.id);
The HTML element with parameter id="url1" needed for $('#url1').val(text.url);
The PHP response code for JS function showdata(); inside feeds.php
Since I don't have your database here, I was unable to test the code. It should work fine, but if anything is wrong, just let me know:

I would normally have two scripts (.php) files.
One to display the form and one to catch the submission (possibly via ajax)
You can have both in the same .php file but then you'd want to check before outputting any text whether you have any POST data to process.
If you go with two files
view file:
<html>
<body>
<form method="POST" action="path/to/formname_submit.php">
your form fields go here
<input name="somefield"/>
...
</form>
<script>
//your jquery code
....
</script>
<body>
</html>
submit file
<?php
if (empty($_POST['id'])){
die("no ID");
};
if (empty($_POST['editvalue'])){
die("no editvalue");
}
//get a database connection
$db = mysqli(DBHOST,DBUSER,DBPASS,DBNAME);
$db->set_charset("utf8");
// read in the POST data
//should do some more validation / anti SQL injection
$editvalue = $db->escape_string($_POST['editvalue']);
$id = intval($_POST['id']);
$sql = "UPDATE sometable SET `field` = '$editvalue' WHERE id=$id";
if ($db->query($sql)){
echo 'Success';
}
else {
echo 'UPDATE ERROR:'.$db->errno.': '.$db->error;
}
your jquery can now send the data to the second script and see if the data coming back from the call is 'Success' and display an error if it's not.

JSON not working with OnChange event

I originally coded this piece to bring back a single data point. I realized I needed more fields returned with an onchange event (drop down select) and changed it to use JSON. It is not returning any data. The drop down is built dynamically through PHP when the page is first loaded. I'm new to this, so any help would be much appreciated.
Dropdown Code:
<p id="dropdown" style="DISPLAY: none" >
<?php
$query = "call test.spsMSTR_AllCatListBuild";
$stmt = $conn->query( $query );
$dropdown = "<select id='catlist' name='catlist' onchange='getval(this);'>";
$dropdown .= "\r\n<option value= 'NA'>Select Category</option>";
foreach ($stmt as $row) {
$dropdown .= "\r\n<option value='{$row['ID']}'>{$row['RPT_NAME']}</option>";
}
$dropdown .= "\r\n</select>";
echo $dropdown;
$conn = null;
?>
</p>
Ajax/JSON code:
<script type="text/javascript" src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.3/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script id="source" language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#catlist").change(function(){
var vid = document.getElementById("catlist").value;
$.getjson("ajax.php",
{catid:vid},
function(result){
alert(result); }
.error(function(xhr) {
alert(xhr)
})
; )
})})
</script>
PHP Code:
<?php include('./DBConfig.php'); ?>
<?php
$vid = $_GET["catid"];
$query = "SELECT RPT_NAME, ACTIVE FROM test.MSTR_REPORT_MASTER WHERE ID = $vid" ;
$stmt = $conn->query( $query );
//$result = $stmt->fetchColumn();
$result = $stmt->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC);
echo json_encode($result);
?>
So, I have corrected your errors and you should have the below for it to work with no errors, unless there is something else that is causing errors.
<select id='catlist' name='catlist'>
<option value='NA'>Select Category</option>
<option value='id1'>val1</option>
<option value='id2'>val2</option>
<option value='id3'>val3</option>
</select>
$(function(){
$("#catlist").change(function() {
var sVal = $(this).val();
if (sVal !== "NA") { // I am assuming you don't want to make an ajax call when the value is 'NA'!
$.getJSON("ajax.php", {catid: $(this).val()}, function(result) {
alert(result);
});
//by the way $(this).val() = id1|id2|id3
}
});
});
Well if you format your code, you can see your problem.
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#catlist").change(function() {
var vid = document.getElementById("catlist").value;
$.getjson("ajax.php", {
catid: vid
},
function(result) {
alert(result);
}
.error(function(xhr) { //<-- error inside getJSON
alert(xhr)
});) //<-- a random )
})
})
and
You have an inline event onchange='getval(this);' but you do not have a function getval listed.

PHP variable not being passed to AJAX call?

Im trying to get my PHP script called from AJAX (that is in my main php file).
Here's an example of what it is supposed to do: http://jsfiddle.net/xfuddzen/
The HTML source code shows only desk_box DIV being created (which is in my main.php). station_info DIV (being created in the display_station.php) is not there. How can I fix this? thanks in advance
Problem: DIVs from my display_stationinfo.php are not being created by using the AJAX call.
main.php with JQuery/AJAX part:
<div id="map_size" align="center">
<?php
//didsplay Desk stations in the map
while($row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($desk_coord_result)){
//naming X,Y values
$id = $row['coordinate_id'];
$x_pos = $row['x_coord'];
$y_pos = $row['y_coord'];
//draw a box with a DIV at its X,Y coord
echo "<div class='desk_box' data='".$id."' style='position:absolute;left:".$x_pos."px;top:".$y_pos."px;'>id:".$id."</div>";
} //end while loop for desk_coord_result
?>
<script type="text/javascript">
//Display station information in a hidden DIV that is toggled
//And call the php script that queries and returns the results LIVE
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.desk_box').each((function(){(this).click(function() {
var id = $(this).attr("data")
$("#station_info_"+id).toggle();
$.ajax({
url: 'station_info.php',
data: { 'id': id },
type: 'POST',

display_station.php (script that I want to call):
<?php
include 'db_conn.php';
//query to show workstation/desks information from DB for the DESKS
$station_sql = "SELECT coordinate_id, x_coord, y_coord, section_name FROM coordinates";
$station_result = mysqli_query($conn,$station_sql);
//see if query is good
if ($station_result === false) {
die(mysqli_error());
}
//Display workstations information in a hidden DIV that is toggled
$html = '';
if($station_result->num_rows > 0){
while($row = $station_result->fetch_object()) {
$id = $row->coordinate_id;
$html .= "<div class='station_info_' id='station_info_$id' style='position:absolute;left:{$row->x_coord}px;top:{$row->y_coord}px;'>Hello the id is:$id</br>Section:{$row->section_name}</br></div>";
}
}
else{
// no results - may want to do something with $html
$html = "no result given";
}
$station_result->free();
$conn->close();
echo $html;
?>
Why dont you filter the coordinate in the query? Like this:
$station_sql = "SELECT coordinate_id, x_coord, y_coord, section_name FROM coordinates WHERE coordinate_id = " . $_GET['coordinate_id'];
And in jquery code:
url: 'display_stationinfo.php?coordinate_id=' + id,
Let's start with your database connection, which should be on a separate secure page.
connect.php:
<?php
function db(){
return new mysqli('host', 'username', 'password', 'database');
}
?>
Obviously, your host will not be 'host'.
Now main.php:
<?php
// only use for PHP on this page for initial page load - target other pages with AJAX
?>
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml' xml:lang='en' lang='en'>
<head>
<meta http-equiv='content-type' content='text/html;charset=utf-8' />
<title>This is Where Your Title Goes</title>
<script type='text/javascript' src='//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js'></script>
<script type='text/javascript' src='main.js'></script>
<link rel='stylesheet' type='text/css' href='main.css' />
</head>
<body>
<div id='map_container'>
<div id='map_size'>
</div>
</div>
</body>
</html>
Now for main.js:
//<![CDATA[
$(function(){
var ms = $('#map_size');
$.post('main_init.php', {init:'1'}, function(d){
for(var i in d){
var di = d[i], x = di.x, y = di.y;
var sti = $("<div class='station_info_' id='station_info_"+i+"'></div>").css({
left:x,
top:y
});
// HTML id, class, and name attributes cannot start with a number
$("<div class='desk_box' data='"+i+"'>id:"+i+'</div>').css({
left:x,
top:y
}).appendTo(ms).append(sti).click(function(){
var info = $(this).next();
$.post('live_info.php', {station_id:info.attr('id').replace(/^station_info_/, '')}, function(r){
// do stuff with r
info.html('love:'+r.love+'<br />hate:'+r.hate).toggle();
}, 'json');
});
}
}, 'json');
});
// use CSS to do `.desk_box,.station_info_{position:absolute;}`
//]]>
Now for main_init.php:
<?php
if(isset($_POST['init']) && $_POST['init'] === '1'){
include_once 'connect.php'; $db = db(); $json = array();
$q = $db->query("SELECT * FROM table WHERE"); // example only
if($q->num_rows > 0){
while($r = $q->fetch_object()){
$json[strval($r->coordinate_id)] = array('x' => $r->x_coord, 'y' => $r->y_coord);
}
}
else{
// no results
}
$q->free(); $db->close();
echo json_encode($json);
}
else{
// could be a hack
}
?>
Here's what live_info.php might look like:
<?php
if(isset($_POST['station_id'])){
include_once 'connect.php'; $db = db(); $json = array();
// example only - you will only get one `$row` if query is done specific, so while loop is not needed
$q = $db->query("SELECT love,hate FROM some_table WHERE id='{$_POST['station_id']}'");
if($q->num_rows > 0){
$row = $q->fetch_object();
// it's okay to overwrite array in this case
$json = array('love' => $row->love, 'hate' => $row->hate);
}
else{
// no results
}
$q->free(); $db->close();
echo json_encode($json);
}
else{
// may be a hack
}
?>

cant fillter characters in jcombo

Can someone help me with this? My sql code only works if I match only integers like 2=2 but if I change it to like this orange=orange it wont work...can anyone help me figure whats wrong with my code.
index.php:
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery/jquery-1.11.0.min.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.jCombo.min.js"></script>
<form>
Caraga Region: <select name="region" id="region"></select>
Municipalities: <select name="town" id="town"></select>
Unique ID: <select name="uniq_id" id="uniq_id"></select> <br />
</form>
<script type="text/javascript">
$( document ).ready(function() {
$("#region").jCombo({ url: "getRegion.php" } );
$("#town").jCombo({ url: "getTown.php?townid=", parent: "#region", selected_value : '510' } );
$("#uniq_id").jCombo({ url: "getID.php?unqid=", parent: "#town", data: String, selected_value : '150' } );
});
</script>
getRegion.php:
<?php
// Connect Database
mysql_connect("localhost","root","");
mysql_select_db("klayton");
// Execute Query in the right order
//(value,text)
$query = "SELECT id, municipalities FROM regions";
$result = mysql_query($query);
$items = array();
if($result && mysql_num_rows($result)>0) {
while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
$option = array("id" => $row[0], "value" => htmlentities($row[1]));
$items[] = $option;
}
}
mysql_close();
$data = json_encode($items);
// convert into JSON format and print
$response = isset($_GET['callback'])?$_GET['callback']."(".$data.")":$data;
echo $data;
?>
getTown.php:
<?php
// Connect Database
mysql_connect("localhost","root","");
mysql_select_db("klayton");
// Get parameters from Array
$townid = !empty($_GET['townid'])
?intval($_GET['townid']):0;
// if there is no city selected by GET, fetch all rows
$query = "SELECT town FROM towns WHERE tcode = $townid";
// fetch the results
$result = mysql_query($query);
$items = array();
if($result && mysql_num_rows($result)>0) {
while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
$option = array("id" => $row['town'], "value" => htmlentities($row['town']));
$items[] = $option;
}
}
mysql_close();
$data = json_encode($items);
echo $data;
?>
getID.php: The problem is in this code. It wont work if I match character to character it only works if its integer=integer.
<?php
// Connect Database
mysql_connect("localhost","root","");
mysql_select_db("klayton");
// Get parameters from Array
$unqid = !empty($_GET['unqid'])
?intval($_GET['unqid']):0;
// if there is no city selected by GET, fetch all rows
$query = "SELECT uid, unq_pos_id FROM tb_uniqid WHERE tb_uniqid.uid = '$unqid'";
// fetch the results
$result = mysql_query($query);
$items = array();
if($result && mysql_num_rows($result)>0) {
while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
$option = array("id" => $row['uid'], "value" => htmlentities($row['unq_pos_id']));
$items[] = $option;
}
}
mysql_close();
$data = json_encode($items);
echo $data;
?>
(uid)field is stored with character values just like in the (town)field. I want to match it but it won't work.
Try to in getID.php replace:
$unqid = !empty($_GET['unqid'])
?intval($_GET['unqid']):0;
with:
$unqid = !empty($_GET['unqid'])
?$_GET['unqid']:0;
if you want to be able to match strings as well as integers. You see, intval() returns only the integer value of the variable, thus you strip of the other characters when you send a string to that page, and therefore you can't match anything with the code you had before.
