Trying to implement javascript popup - javascript

I'm trying to get a javascript popup on my webpage and it's not working. I've written it all out in jsfiddle - http://jsfiddle.net/68vGZ/
and the code is here:
HTML
<div id="header-links">
<button id="aboutinfo">About</button>
<div id="overlay"></div>
<div id="popup">
<p>About Info Here</p>
<button id="closeaboutinfo">Close</button>
</div>
<button id="contactinfo">Contact</button>
<div id="overlay"></div>
<div id="popup">
<p>Contact with this email address</p>
<button id="closecontactinfo">Close</button>
</div>
</div>
CSS
#overlay {
display:none;
position:fixed;
left:0px;
top:0px;
width:100%;
height:100%;
background:#000;
opacity:0.5;
z-index:99999;
}
#popup {
display:none;
position:fixed;
left:50%;
top:50%;
width:300px;
height:150px;
margin-top:-75px;
margin-left:-150px;
background:#FFFFFF;
border:2px solid #000;
z-index:100000;
}
JavaScript
window.onload - function () {
document.getElementById("aboutinfo").onclick = function () {
var overlay = document.getElementById("overlay");
var popup = document.getElementById("popup");
overlay.style.display = "block";
popup.style.display = "block";
};
document.getElementById("closeaboutinfo").onclick = function () {
var overlay = document.getElementById("overlay");
var popup = document.getElementById("popup");
overlay.style.display = "none";
popup.style.display = "none";
};
document.getElementById("contactinfo").onclick = function () {
var overlay = document.getElementById("overlay");
var popup = document.getElementById("popup");
overlay.style.display = "block";
popup.style.display = "block";
};
document.getElementById("closecontactinfo").onclick = function () {
var overlay = document.getElementById("overlay");
var popup = document.getElementById("popup");
overlay.style.display = "none";
popup.style.display = "none";
};
}
The buttons show and the text is hidden, but i just can't work out why they won't trigger... Thanks for your help!

Three problems:
Firstly, this isn't valid:
window.onload - function () {
^
Your - symbol needs to be changed to a =:
window.onload = function () {
Secondly you have multiple elements with the same id attribute - this is invalid HTML and your JavaScript will only detect the first matched element. You should change these to class attributes and use getElementsByClassName instead of getElementById.
Thirdly, you need to tell JSFiddle to place your JavaScript in the document body.
Fixed JSFiddle demo.

I would look into using Bootstrap. They make it easy for you to create nice looking popups with rich functionality right out of the box. Here is a link where you can get bootstrap http://getbootstrap.com
They have much more to offer besides nice popups (modals). Definitely worth checking out even if this answer doesn't help you out.

Hide and Unhide div with the same button

I am using a code that unhides a hidden div.
HTML:
<div id="unhide" style="display:none;">DUMMY TEXT</div>
<button id="expand" name="expand">Show The Div</button>
JS:
document.getElementById("expand").addEventListener("click", function()
{
document.getElementById('unhide').style.display = "block";
});
How can I make the same button hide the div after clicking it again? Is it possible to alter the code I am using now?
use toggle to simple hide and unhide div
$("#expand").click(function() {
$("#unhide").toggle();
});
Use toggle for this show and shide, see below code.
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#expand").click(function(){
$("#unhide").toggle();
});
});
By doing some modifications in JavaScript, you can use the same button to hide the div as well as you can change the button text like below.
JS:
document.getElementById("expand").addEventListener("click", function()
{
var displayDiv = document.getElementById('unhide');
var displayValue = (displayDiv.style.display === "block") ? "none" : "block";
this.innerHTML = (displayValue === "block") ? "Hide The Div" : "Show The Div";
displayDiv.style.display = displayValue;
});
Link reference: https://jsfiddle.net/pitchiahn/hctnvsz1/1/
use simple if-else control flow
document.getElementById("expand").addEventListener("click", function()
{
var elem = document.getElementById('unhide');
if(elem.style.display == "none") { elem.style.display = "block"; }
else { elem.style.display = "none"; }
});
You can use .toggle()
$('#buttonId').on('click', function(e){
$("#DivId").toggle();
$(this).toggleClass('class1')
});
.class1
{
color: orange;
}
use toggleClass() to toggle the class for the button
$('#buttonLogin').on('click', function(e){
$("#login_Box_Div").toggle();
$(this).toggleClass('class1')
});
.class1
{
color: orange;
}
document.getElementById("expand").addEventListener("click", function()
{
if(document.getElementById('unhide').style.display == 'block')
document.getElementById('unhide').style.display = 'none';
else
document.getElementById('unhide').style.display = 'block';
});
you can check the running snippet here
this is pure java script
var button = document.getElementById('button'); // Assumes element with id='button'
button.onclick = function() {
var div = document.getElementById('newpost');
if (div.style.display !== 'none') {
div.style.display = 'none';
}
else {
div.style.display = 'block';
}
};
This worked very well for me, hope it can help someone else. it opens a hidden div in an absolute position and closes it with the same button or the button in the div.
I use it for menu functions.
<div id="myDiv6" style="border:1px solid;background: rgba(255, 255, 255,
0.9);display: none;position: absolute; top: 229px; left: 25%; z-
index:999;height: auto;
width: 500px;">
<h2 >menu item</h2>
what ever you want in the hidden div
<button style="cursor: pointer;border-radius: 12px;background-image: linear-
gradient(to right, red,yellow);font-size:16px;"
onclick="changeStyle6()">Close</button>
</div>
<br/>
<button style="cursor: pointer;border-radius: 12px;background-image: linear-
gradient(to right, red,yellow);font-size:16px;width: 125px;"
onclick="changeStyle6()">button text</button><br/>
<script type="text/javascript">
function changeStyle6(){
var element = document.getElementById("myDiv6");
if(element.style.display == "none") { element.style.display = "block"; }
else { element.style.display = "none"; }
}
</script>

Want to fetch the id of the different div elements on the click of p element using javascript

I have a page with p tags and div element, the div element is set with display:none in the starting so, I just want to display the different divs as shown below inside the body tag on the click of the p tag but i got stuck in fetching the different id of the divs. Please do help me out from this situation.Below is my code. Thanks
<script>
function toggle(id)// here is the function which gets the different ids of the div
{ var element = document.getElementById(id);
for(i=1; i<3; i++)
{
if(element[i].style.display == "none")
{
element[i].style.display = "block";
}
else
{
element[i].style.display = "none"
}
}
}
</script>
<body>
<p onclick="toggle('div1')">Sentence1</p>
<p onclick="toggle('div2')">Sentence2</p>
<div id="div1" name="Name 1" style="display:none; width:400px; height:300px; border:1px solid black; background-color:yellow;" id="div1">Barun Ghatak</div>
<div id="div2" style="display:none; width:400px; height:300px; border:1px solid black; background-color:black;" id="div2">Bhoopi</div>
</body>
You only have one of each div, so you don't need the loop. Just use
function toggle(id)// here is the function which gets the different ids of the div
{
var element = document.getElementById(id);
if(element.style.display == "none")
{
element.style.display = "block";
}
else
{
element.style.display = "none"
}
}
document.getElementById returns a single object and not an array.
If you want to get both the divs, I suggest using a class to get them.
If you wanted to only show one at a time, for example if you were building a tabs, then you could use this code to hide all the other divs first, then show only the one you want to toggle. Otherwise, if you're happy to toggle them, you can use the code posted by the others.
JS Fiddle demo: http://jsfiddle.net/ecs77e9a/
HTML
<p onclick="toggle('div1');">Sentence1</p>
<p onclick="toggle('div2');">Sentence2</p>
<div id="content">
<div id="div1" name="Name 1" style="display:none; width:400px; height:300px; border:1px solid black; background-color:yellow;" id="div1">Barun Ghatak</div>
<div id="div2" style="display:none; width:400px; height:300px; border:1px solid black; background-color:black;" id="div2">Bhoopi</div>
</div>
JS
function toggle(id)
{
//Hide all other divs first
var divs = document.getElementById('content').childNodes;
for ( var i = 0; i < divs.length; i++ ) {
if ( divs[i].nodeName == "DIV" ) {
var div = document.getElementById(divs[i].id);
div.style.display = "none";
}
}
//Show the one that's being requested
var element = document.getElementById(id);
element.style.display = "block";
}

how do I use the same link to "re-hide" previously hidden text via Javascript?

The below code snippet shows the invite code when I click "Invite Code". But how do I re-hide the invite code if the same link is clicked again? And can it be done where it cycles back and forth with subsequent clicks? I didn't write this code but merely modified it to my use. I am still very new to this type of thing. Thanks!
<style>
div.hide { display:none; }
div.show { text-align:center; }
</style>
<script type='text/javascript'>
function showText(show, hide) {
document.getElementById(show).className = "show";
document.getElementById(hide).className = "hide";
}
</script>
<br>
<font color="red">-</font>Home<font color="red"> / </font><a onclick="showText('text1')" href="javascript:void(0);">Invite Code</a>-</font>
<div id="text1" class="hide"><font color="red">abc123</font></div>
</center></h3>
Simply use this function:
function showText(id)
{
var elem = document.getElementById(id);
if(elem.style.display == 'none')
{
elem.style.display = 'inline';
}
else
{
elem.style.display = 'none';
}
}
<a onClick="showText('text1');" href="#">Show or Hide</a><br/>
<div style="height: 30px;"><div id="text1" style="display: none;">Text to hide or show... WTF?!</div></div>
<div>This text should not move.</div>
PS: This also works for 2 Elements...
Greetings
I really don't see the use for the show class. You could just toggle the hide class on the elements that you want to toggle.
Assume you dont need the show class, then use the classList.toggle function like this
function toggle(target){
document.getElementById(target).classList.toggle('hide');
}
.hide{ display:none }
<button onclick="toggle('test')">Show / Hide</button>
<div id="test" class="hide">Hello world!</div>
save the state with a boolean
var hided = true;
function showText(show,hide){
if (hided){
document.getElementById(show).className = "show";
document.getElementById(hide).className = "hide";
}
else{
document.getElementById(show).className = "hide";
document.getElementById(hide).className = "show";
}
hided = !hided;
}
fiddle with this code and some of your html : fiddle,
isn't it the expected behavior ?
<html>
<div ID="content" style="display:block;">This is content.</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
function toggleContent() {
// Get the DOM reference
var contentId = document.getElementById("content");
// Toggle
contentId.style.display == "block" ? contentId.style.display = "none" :
contentId.style.display = "block";
}
</script>
<button onclick="toggleContent()">Toggle</button>
</html>
//Code is pretty self explanatory.

Other Script doesn't work on the same page

I have a script when the button is clicked. An image will pop up..
And I want to have multiple buttons and multiple images but same div to have same animation on script.
But the problem is, the script only work on just 1 button.
And it doens't show the image.
HTML CODE
<button id="LearnMoreBtn">Learn More</button>
<div id="overlay"></div>
<div id="popup">
<div id="PopUpText">Popup contents here</div>
<button id="CloseBtn">Close</button>
</div> </div>
<div id="img2">
<button id="LearnMoreBtn">Learn More</button>
<div id="overlay"></div>
<div id="popup" img src="newfinal/images/portfolio6.jpg">
<div id="PopUpText">Popup contents here</div>
<button id="CloseBtn">Close</button>
</div> </div>
<div>
some other content that will be behind the popup
</div>
Javascript Code
window.onload = function() {
document.getElementById("LearnMoreBtn").onclick = function(){
var overlay = document.getElementById("overlay");
var popup = document.getElementById("popup");
overlay.style.display = "block";
popup.style.display = "block";
};
document.getElementById("CloseBtn").onclick = function(){
var overlay = document.getElementById("overlay");
var popup = document.getElementById("popup");
overlay.style.display = "none";
popup.style.display = "none";
}
};
Here's the demo..
http://jsfiddle.net/j4c7U/
You have the same id for both buttons. The id should be unique for each element.
Change LearnMoreBtn of the second button to LearnMoreBtn1 and check.
Here is the Fiddle
Because you use same id for all the buttons. getElementById will always return the first element with given id.
You can simplify by using query:
http://jsfiddle.net/j4c7U/129/
<button class="LearnMoreBtn">Learn More</button>
<button class="LearnMoreBtn">Learn More2</button>
$('.LearnMoreBtn').click(function(){
var overlay = document.getElementById("overlay");
var popup = document.getElementById("popup");
overlay.style.display = "block";
popup.style.display = "block";
});

Toggling multiple divs with one link Javascript

so, ive got 2 divs, one which is visible from start, and the other is hidden. Im trying to work out the action so that when i click a single link, the first div disappears and the second appears, and to reverse on second click. I have some knowledge of javascript, but zero knowledge of Jquery and those were the only questions i could find on here.
<script language="javascript">
function toggle() {
var ele = document.getElementById("toggleContent");
var text = document.getElementById("displayContent");
if(ele.style.display == "block") {
ele.style.display = "none;
text.innerHTML = "blog posts";
}
else {
ele.style.display = "block";
text.innerHTML = "hide posts";
}
}
</script>
this is what i have so far, which works for one div, but i dont know how to change this to work for 2 divs through the same link
You are missing a quote, add a second quote like below:
ele.style.display = "none";
Use a class rather than an ID.
<style type="css/stylesheet">
#div1 {
width:200px;
height:100px;
background:green;
}
#div2 {
width:200px;
height:100px;
background:red;
}
.toggle {
display:none;
}
</style>
<div id="menu">Toggle
</div>
<div id="div1" class="toggle">
<p class="displayContent">I'm some content 1</p>
</div>
<div id="div2" class="toggle">
<p class="displayContent">I'm some content 2</p>
</div>
<script language="javascript">
var a = document.getElementById("link");
a.onclick = function () {
var ele = document.getElementsByClassName("toggle");
for (var i = 0; i < ele.length; i++) {
var item = ele[i];
if (item.style.display == "block") {
item.style.display = "none";
} else {
item.style.display = "block";
item.innerHtml = "some content from " + i;
}
}
};
</script>
Here is the JSFiddle solution http://jsfiddle.net/dUU7j/
