Using onblur and setTimeout to close a sub menu - javascript

I want to use onblur to close a sub-menu. I've got it to "hide" the sub-menu, but it does just that. I want the menu to go back to its original state. I would also like to set a timeout on the menu so it will close after 5-10 seconds.
P.S I tried to make a jsfiddle for this, and it didnt function. Also, this is for a mobile site.
HTML
<div class="smenu_div"">
<ul>
<li>
<a class="menu-title" href="#" onblur="hidemenu()" onclick="showsub()">Menu</a>
<ul id='hiddenMenu'>
<li>Home</li>
<li>Trucks</li>
<li>Equipment</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
CSS
.smenu_div ul
{
padding:0px;
margin-top:5px;
margin-right:40px;
font-family:georgia;
font-size:70px;
color:#ffffff;
list-style:none;
text-indent:15px;
text-align:center;
width:40%;
overflow:hidden;
position: relative;
display: block;
float:right;
}
.smenu_div ul li
{
-webkit-border-radius: 10px;
-moz-border-radius: 10px;
border-radius: 10px;
background: rgba(0,0,0,0);
line-height:justified;
margin-top: 10px;
position:relative;
}
/* Changed this so that your hidden menu is hidden by default */
.smenu_div li ul
{
z-index: 50;
display: none;
position: relative;
width: 100%;
background: transparent;
float:none;
}
.smenu_div ul li a
{
-webkit-border-radius: 10px;
-moz-border-radius: 10px;
border-radius: 10px;
text-decoration:none;
color:#ffffff;
background: #000000;
display:block;
position:relative;
}
/* #new */
.smenu_div ul li a.menu-title
{
padding-right: 50px;
background: #000000 url('plus.png') no-repeat right center;
background-size: 75px 75px;
}
.menu-open .smenu_div ul li a.menu-title
{
background-image: url('minus.png')
}
JavaScript
var hidden = true;
function showsub() {
document.getElementById('hiddenMenu').style.display = (hidden) ? 'block' : 'none';
document.body.classList.toggle('menu-open');
hidden = !hidden;
};
function hidemenu() {
document.getElementById('hiddenMenu').style.display = 'none';
document.body.classList.toggle('plus');
hidden = !hidden;
};

there's a mistake in your html code <div class ="smenu_div""> has one too many quotes, so it breaks jsfiddle.
You almost have it, literally all you're missing in code is
setTimeout(hidemenu,10000);
from showsub. Note, if you want to prevent it from closing after 10s, if the user keeps pressing on stuff, you'll need some extra code, but if you're ok with it closing 10s after the user clicks on menu no matter what then it's ok.
here's the fiddle

onClick JS not go to top of the page

I have a page with an initial description, followed by 2 buttons, where the user can choose typeA or typeB. They work by "target": when the user clicks typeA comes the content relative to typeA, bellow the buttons; same to typeB.
typeA is the most common selection, then, when the page loads, a javascript emulates the click to typeA and opens respective content. To avoid hidden the initial description, there is another javascript to put the page at the top. Worked on Chrome and Edge, not on Firefox.
I would like to repeat the same process when the user clicks: opens the respective content, but positioning the page at the top, or, at least, showing the buttons. I thought event onClick calling the same js backToTop would worked - but not.
I put an alert on js and enters there but not execute: always keeps the content of the button selected in its better visibility.
I tried:
window.location.href = '#top';
window.scrollBy(0, -500);
document.html.scrollTop = document.documentElement.scrollTop = 0;
without success.
What am I doing wrong?

};
</script>
You had a real mess there regarding how you process click events and href attribute, i.e:
You had onclick attribute on your links, and you were adding yet another listener to them in JS
You didn't event.preventDefault() in your function, and default browser behavior when you click on a link is to get you to its href path
I've cleaned up a bit and changed some things. Since we need to prevent default behavior :target selector will no longer work, so instead I did what you've already been doing with links, and added an active class to your content. clickHandler() will now remove and add class active as necessary. At the end just scroll to the top. Here's the snippet:
document.querySelectorAll('.target').forEach(targetLink => targetLink.addEventListener('click', clickHandler, false));
function clickHandler(ev) {
ev.preventDefault(); // prevent browser from automatically scrolling to href pos
if (!ev.currentTarget.classList.contains('active')) {
// disable active elements
document.querySelector('.target.active').classList.remove('active');
document.querySelector('.items div.active').classList.remove('active');
// add class to the clicked on button and its corresponding content tab
ev.currentTarget.classList.add('active');
// to prevent pointless string slicing below, you'd have to store ids somewhere else i.e in the data-id attribute
const id = ev.currentTarget.href.slice(ev.currentTarget.href.lastIndexOf('#') + 1);
document.getElementById(id).classList.add('active');
}
window.scrollTo(0,0);
}

Trying to style a Sidebar Widget Navigation with JQuery

For the navigational items which have a submenu, for example, 'Primary Fees', I have included an arrow. Now when I hover over the Main Menu Item, I have included an animation which rotates the arrow and highlights the Main Menu item with red. In order to rotate the arrow, I added a .rotateOnHover class to all the Main Menu Items which have the arrow. then I use CSS to perform the rotation animation.
Now to the problem. When I hover over the submenu Items, I want to keep that particular Main Menu item highlighted and keep the arrow rotated. For example, when I hover over 'Grade 1-3 Boarding', I want to keep 'Primary Fees' highlighted and I want to keep the arrow rotated. I did some searching on the interwebs, and in particular StackOverflow, and I was encouraged to use Jquery to achieve this task. Since this is in essence, hovering over a child element and changing the style of its parent element.
The problem is when I hover over the submenu items e.g. 'Grade 1-3 Boarding', it applies the rotating arrow animation to ALL the main menu items which have the same arrow and arrow class, .rotateOnHover.
How can I hover over a submenu item and apply my desired hover effects to its parent Menu Item Only and not all the menu items?
Any help will be appreciated.
Also, any styling tips for the sidebar and the website, in general, will be appreciated. This is my very first website and I'm learning on the job.
This is the code for the sidebar
HTML
<div class="sidebar-widget">
<div class="sidebarExplore">

</div>
<ul class="sidebarExploreList">
<li class="dropdownsidebaritem">

</div>
</li>
<li class="dropdownsidebaritem">Secondary Fees&nbsp<i class="fa fa-chevron-circle-down rotateOnHover"></i></li>
<li>Admission Forms</li>
<li>School Fee Policy</li>

margin: 0;
}
.sidebar-widget ul li {
list-style-type: none;

border-top: 1px solid black;
}
.sidebar-widget ul li:last-child{
list-style-type: none;

border-bottom: 1px solid black;
}
.sidebar-widget ul li a{
display: block;
position: relative;
text-decoration: none;
text-align: center;
padding: 20px;
font-size: 18px;
font-weight: 100;
text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;
}
.sidebarExploreSubmenu{
display: none;
position: relative;
color: black;
background-color:white;
font-size: 11px;
border-bottom: 0.5px solid bisque;
box-shadow: 0px 8px 16px 0px rgba(0,0,0,0.2);
z-index: 1;
}
.sidebarExploreSubmenu a{
padding: 10px;

font-size: 10px;
}
.rotateOnHover {
font-size:18px;

transition: transform .8s ease-in-out;
}
.sidebar-widget a:hover {
background-color: #990000;
color: white;
}
.dropdownsidebaritem a:hover .rotateOnHover {
-webkit-transform: rotate(180deg);
transform: rotate(180deg);
}
.sidebarExploreSubmenu a:hover{
font-size: 10px;
}
JS
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$( '.dropdownsidebaritem' ).hover(
function(){
$(this).children('.sidebarExploreSubmenu')
.delay(100)
.slideDown(500);
},
function(){
$(this).children('.sidebarExploreSubmenu')
.clearQueue()
.slideUp(500);
}
);
});
$(function() {
$('.sidebarExploreSubmenu a').hover(function() {
$('.rotateOnHover').css('transform', 'rotate(180deg)');
}, function() {
// on mouseout, reset the transform
$('.rotateOnHover').css('transform', '');
});
});
</script>
First of all don't style inline elements, example:
Grade 4 - 7 - Day School
instead make it like that:
Grade 4 - 7 - Day School
and then in style.css add:
.sidebarExploreSubmenu-anchor {
font-size: 15px; font-weight:bold; padding: 5px; }
It can make your website messy. Try to do everything in style.css, remember that there're levels in which browser are reading styles, example:
!important > inline styles > #style .style .style > .style .style > .style

Make floated element have height 100% to fill page

I am trying to get the left side bar to have a height of 100% and fill the page no matter how big the "main" div is made.
At the moment it stops at normal page height and doesn't increase height.
Is there any way I can achieve this?

There's no way to do this by pure CSS, they way you coded-sliced it. If you want it to make work with the current layout - calculate the height via JS, based on the contents and height of the right column.
Basically in your case there different ways to proceed:
calculate the height via JS, based on the contents and height of the right column.
to nest DIVs. So one div will stretch it's parent. Then it will be possible to use purely CSS solution. Read more here one of the possible solutions.
to "override" the standard behavior of divs with "display:table-cell;" (table, table-row, etc), or even to use modern features of CSS alike flexboxes
Which way to go, is up to you.
Does the container need to be defined as percentage? If not then you could do something like this:
$('.navbar-left').css('height', $('.container').height()+'px');
Using Farside's method and updating a little bit here is my code:
var column = $(".column_left").height() + "px";
$(".column_right").css({"height": column});
$(window).on('resize', function(){ //accounts for if the user resizes the window, column stays in place.
var column = $(".column_left").height() + "px";
$(".column_right").css({"height": column});
});
Here is a Pure CSS way to acheive the same.
JS Filddle: https://jsfiddle.net/cx6nu8sw/
Following are the classes from your code which are changed
#navbar-top {
width: 100%;
position:relative;
background-color:#3c8dbc;
margin:0 auto;
border: none;
min-height: 51px;
display:table-cell;
vertical-align:top;
}
.navbar-left {
background-color:rgb(26, 34, 38);
color:white;
display:table-cell;
vertical-align:top;
}
//newly addition
#navigation{
width:230px;
}
As mentioned by #Farside in his 3rd point, I have used "display:table-cell;" on your Div's. Its same as creating table, where the height of row is decided by the longest content in the entire row.
But, be aware that width & height of elements with "display:table-cell;" cannot be forced, it will adjust according to the content inside them. So you can set width and height of elements inside them it will automatically take the same height and width.

Web menu button to keep a different color

I don't probably know how to search for this precise question and I haven't found anything, so I am sorry if there is already asked somewhere.
I only have 3 buttons and the index is the "Inicio" page. I've applied a :hover to the buttons, but I want to keep it fixed for the button of the displayed page. Obviously, I want to have "Inicio" in this state at the beginning.
(jsfiddle below)
<!-- menu -->
<nav id="nav">
<ul>
<a id=inicio href=#><li class="boton"><p class="text_menu">INICIO</p></li></a>
<a id=productos href=#><li class="boton"><p class="text_menu">PRODUCTOS</p></li></a>
<a id=contacto href=#><li class="boton"><p class="text_menu">CONTACTO</p></li></a>
</ul>
</nav>
#nav {
padding-top: 27px;
padding-left: 25%;
}
#nav ul li {
list-style:none;
display:inline-block;
margin-left: 4%;
text-align: center;
font-family: 'Dosis', sans-serif;
font-size: 100%;
color: #FFF;
}
.text_menu {
padding-top: 5px;
}
.boton {
width: 15%;
height: 57px;
background-color: #0099ff;
border-radius: 10px 10px 0px 0px;
-moz-border-radius: 10px 10px 0px 0px;
-webkit-border-radius: 10px 10px 0px 0px;
border: 0px solid #000000;
}
.boton:hover {
background-color: #0033ff;
}
Here is a jsfiddle:

Thanks for your responses.
U can simply add class like .hovered to current button like
HTML:
<li class="boton hovered"><p class="text_menu">CONTACTO</p></li></a>
CSS:
.hovered {
background-color: #0033ff;
}
UPD: Fiddle
UPD2: For page changing
U simply can add and remove class on `click' like:
$('nav ul a').on('click', function(){
$('nav ul a li.hovered').removeClass('hovered');
$(this).children('li').addClass('hovered');
})
Fiddle2
If you want to use without JQuery, you have to use it in javascript
HTML :
<a id="mnu1" class="mnu hovered" src="#" onclick="makeSelected('mnu1')"> One </a>
<a id="mnu2" class="mnu" src="#" onclick="makeSelected('mnu2')"> Two </a>
<a id="mnu3" class="mnu" src="#" onclick="makeSelected('mnu3')"> Three </a>
CSS :
.mnu{
background-color : #451;
margin-left:20px;
font-size:30px;
}
a:hover{
background-color:#ccc;
}
.hovered{
background-color:#ccc;
}
JS :
var prev_mnuid= "mnu1";
function makeSelected(mnuid){
document.getElementById(prev_mnuid).className = "mnu";
document.getElementById(mnuid).className = "mnu hovered";
prev_mnuid=mnuid;
}

Problem with sub-menu showing/hiding on click

I followed a great example of how to make a sub-menu appear/disappear on click here and made it work. Quite an accomplishment since I'm just starting with javascript. But just as I made it work a few other problems came up, I'll try to explain:
1.- I have a vertical main menu and one of the options, 'Products' has a sub-category that opens on hover below the parent item. When selecting one of its sub-categories, a bigger menu shows up in a new div to the right of the main menu. When this happens, the selected sub-category changes color and displays a bullet so the user knows which sub-category they are viewing. I was doing this using PHP to detect the current page and assign an "active" id. But when I had it like that the sub-menu show/hide didn't work and all the options were showing when first entering the page. So I changed the link reference from "page.php" to "#" ---which makes more sense since that option is not meant to be a link rather than just display another sub-menu but had to include it for the sake of displaying the 'active' id--- and now the show/hide works except after I click a sub-category, the menu to the right opens, but the previously selected sub-category that opens on hover closes and the php detect function doesn't work because I changed the reference to "#" and the link doesn't show an 'active' status; in fact, the 'home' option stays selected even when the second div is already showing.
It sounds confusing, I know. Here's the example, I hope it's clear what I'm trying to do. I'd appreciate if anyone knows a way around this.
2.- Once I can get this fixed, is there a way to make the second div slide from left to right instead of fading in?
Thanks in advance :)
