jsfiddle example of what i am trying
<div class="name1" title=" Air jordan ">mike jordan</div>
thats my html .
I want to change the tooltip dynamically to say "air jordan 12:44pm is mike jordan"
i know how to get the 12:44pm. what i dont know is how to change the tooltip dynamically while reading the original element. I have to change the title element in order to change the tooltip right?
here is what I am trying
$( ".name1" ).tooltip({
content: function() {
console.log("1234");
var element = $( this );
return "gerd";
}
});
I feel like i am going down a very wrong path. I dont even see the console logs inside of the function.
Is there a way to fix this?
Or Should I
1. see if the element has a mouseenter,
2. then quickly change the title attritubte then
3 add a .tooltip?
Assuming that by 'tooltip' you mean the text that you see when you hover over the element (which is just the value of the title attribute), then you can use jQuery to simply edit the title attribute directly.
$('.name1').attr('title','air jordan ' + yourFormattedDateTimeFunction() + ' is mike jordan');
EDIT:
A little Googling leads me to think you're referring specifically to the jQueryUI tooltip method, which is a bit fancier than standard tooltips. I'm not overly familiar with how this method works, but based on the API, I'd say your biggest problem is that you're passing a function handler to 'content', as opposed to actually executing a function which would create the string you need. I suggest you read up on Immediately Invoked Function Expressions for an explanation on the difference between these formats. So theoretically, your code should look something like this:
$('.name1').tooltip({
content: (function () {
console.log('this should show up now');
return 'air jordan ' + yourFormattedDateTimeFunction() + ' is mike jordan';
})()
});

I am trying to replace a specific snippet of text inside a paragraph. I am just trying to replace the phone number. The code inside the body i am unable to access due to it being pushed to us via our partner.
To see what options are available please contact a lodging specialist
via calling 866.264.1842.
I have tried
$("body").html(
$("body").html().replace(/866.264.1842/g,'888.888.4754') );
This works however it breaks other code on our page and makes our calendar picker not work. Is there a way just to do this with css. I have access to the CSS but not the JS that is running on the page.
Let's assume the phone number is in a div which ID is "contact". Then you have to do that:
$("#contact").html($("#contact").html().replace(/866.264.1842/g,'888.888.4754'))
That way you don't remove the DOM modifications made by your calendar picker javascript code.
I have rewritten a function for this, hopefully this should work for you
function replaceDOMText(str, replaceWith) {
$('body:contains(' + str + ')').contents().each(function() {
if (this.nodeType == 3) {
$(this).parent().html(function(_, oldValue) {
return oldValue.replace(RegExp(str, "g"), replaceWith);
})
}
});
}
// Call like this
replaceDOMText("866.264.1842", "888.888.4754" );
Play with this fiddle
The title attribute on a particular HTML element is not displayed in my application if viewed in Firefox. There are multiple topics explaining this problem. I was unable to find a sollution that would fit my needs. So I ask if you can please help.
I have a number of divs lined up. On mouseover each of the div's should display a different value(title). The title attribute works fine in Chrome but I need something simillar for Firefox.
The title attribute is set dynamically from Javascript!
My Javascript:
dojo.connect(div, 'mousemove',rasterTimeDisplay);
function rasterTimeDisplay() {
dojo.attr(evt.target, 'title', "some new title");
}
Why not to store the data to be displayed in another attribute ? Because you use javascript to feed your data-storage attribute, you can whatever you want.
For example, with jQuery :
//I feed my data-storage attribute
$("#my_div").attr('my-data', '<h1>my content to be displayed</h1>');
//And then i bind the hover event to toggle displaying of this data
$("#my_div").hover(
function(){
$(this).html($(this).attr('my-data'));
},
function(){
$(this).html('');
}
);
Or with standard JavaScript :
document.getElementById('my_div').my_data = '<h1>my content to be displayed</h1>';
document.getElementById('my_div').onmouseover = function(){
this.innerHTML = this.my_data;
};
document.getElementById('my_div').onmouseoout = function(){
this.innerHTML = '';
};
Sorry if i missunderstood you. However, you are trying to trigger the title attribute on hover? But the title attribute is already triggered by hover on default:
So if you just add the attribute to your desired element, you will get the extra information on hover.
var titles = document.getElementsByClassName('title');
for(var i = 0; i < titles.length; i++)
{
titles[i].title = 'Hover information ' + i;
}
jsFiddle
I you're interesting in the jQuery way to do this:
$('.title').attr('title', 'Hover information');
Still doesn't work?
Step-1: First try to run your firefox client in safe-mode. Your problem might be solved now. If this is the case proceed to step-2. Else... Well i would suggest you to update your grapical driver or install a newer version.
Step-2: Disable your Hardware Acceleration(AH).
Check another answer about this here: https://support.mozilla.org/nl/questions/860902
Now if you just want a work around, to even let the oldest Firefox browsers support this. You can find one here: Tooltips (title="...") won't show in Firefox
I hope this solved your problem.
AJAX content is being rendered with a remoteLink function inside the form to populate a accordion (just a little background info).
The function attatchEmail(test) which is being called on the double-click of each paragraph content of the JQuery Accordion widget. This is what happens running the function... Screenshot of 1st alert & Screenshot of 2nd alert.
Is it not possible to select the paragraph and get the contents from the paragraph like below?
(I have tried changing .val to .html and .text. I have also tried $('#'+testingID))
_form.GSP
function attatchEmail(test) {
$(document).ready(function()
{
var testingID = test.id;
alert(testingID);
var testingValue = $(testingID).val();
alert(testingValue);
});
};
_contactListAjax.GSP
<g:each in="${contactList}" status = "i" var="contact">
<h3>${contact.contactSurname +', '+ contact.contactForename}</h3>
<div><p id="contact${contact.id}" ondblclick="attatchEmail(this)">${'Email: '+contact.email}</p></div>
</g:each>
Run out of avenues to explore, I'm sure I've done something simple like this before perfectly fine :/
See two screenshots please for better insight, thanks
Well, it looks like you're using jQuery but it also looks like you're not really buying into the jQuery methodology. Mixing behavior with markup is not really considered a good practice these days, especially when using a library like jQuery. I'm not sure of your exact issue but I would recommend changing it to something like the following:
<g:each in="${contactList}" status = "i" var="contact">
<h3>${contact.contactSurname +', '+ contact.contactForename}</h3>
<div><p class="contact-email" data-id="${contact.id}">${'Email: '+contact.email}</p></div>
</g:each>
$(function() {
$("body").on("dblclick", ".contact-email", attachEmail);
});
function attatchEmail(event) {
var $element = $(event.target);
var id = $element.data("id");
};
This should help fix any issues with dynamic rendering because of the way the jQuery on function works.
This question comes very closely to what I'm after: Replace an Attribute in the Tweet Button with Jquery
However, the suggested solution works just once. That is, I cannot use it in my switch statement like this:
switch(element.id)
{
case "t1":
$(document).ready(function(){
$('a[data-text]').each(function(){
$(this).attr('data-text', Text_Variant_1);
});
$.getScript('http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js');
});
break;
case "t2":
$(document).ready(function(){
$('a[data-text]').each(function(){
$(this).attr('data-text', Text_Variant_2);
});
$.getScript('http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js');
});
...
}
What happens is that the data-text attribute is set according to whichever case happens first and doesn't change afterwards.
How can I change data-text attribute of a Tweet Button as many times as I need?
Update: here's the page I'm working on: http://zhilkin.com/socio/en/
The Traits table can be safely ignored. What I want to do with the Sociotypes table is that when you click on a type, the data-text of the Tweet Button below the description on the right should be changed accordingly.
Right now it works like this: if I hover on or click "Don Quixote", then data-text is set to "... Don Quixote ...", and it stays the same if I click "Dumas" later. And vice versa: if I hover on or click "Dumas", then data-text is set to "... Dumas ..." and doesn't change if I click "Don Quixote". (Other types are empty at the moment.)
So, the Tweet Button is only changed the first time I run the script, but I need it to be updated as many times as the type changes.
I struggled with this for a couple of hours this morning, but finally got it working! The problem is essentially that you can only include the twitter widgets.js script once in the page, and that script evaluates the data-text attribute on load. Therefore, in your example, you dynamically set the data-text attribute before loading the script, which will work as expected. However, you can then make no further updates as the script has already run.
I saw this article suggesting you can call twttr.widgets.load() again at runtime to re-evaluate and re-render the buttons, however that didn't work for me. This is because that function re-evaluates <a> tags, not <iframe> tags!
So the solution, as pointed out here, is to completely remove the rendered <iframe> from the DOM, then make a new <a> element with all the appropriate attributes before calling twttr.widgets.load() to finally re-evaluate it and turn it into an <iframe>.
Please see this fiddle for a working example!
You can also use Twitter's createShareButton API call:
function callAsRequired(){
var nodeID = 'YourTwitterNodeID'
//Remove existing share button, if it exists.
var myNode = document.getElementById(nodeID);
while (myNode.firstChild) {
myNode.removeChild(myNode.firstChild);
}
//Create button and customise
twttr.widgets.createShareButton(
'http://your.custom.url.here/',
document.getElementById(nodeID),
{
count: 'none',
text: 'Your custom tweet here'
});
}
since you are using each loop you can use if statements instead:
$(document).ready(function(){
$('a[data-text]').each(function(){
if (theCase == 1) {
$(this).attr('data-text', Text_Variant_1);
}
else if (theCase == 2) { ... }
})
});
Essentially, I want to pull text within a div tag from a document on my server to place it in the current document. To explain the reason: I want to pull a headline from a "news article" to use it as the text for a link to that article.
For example, within the target HTML is the tag:
<div id='news-header'>Big Day in Wonderland</div>
So in my current document I want to use javascript to set the text within my anchor tags to that headline, i.e.:
<a href='index.php?link=to_page'>Big Day in Wonderland</a>
I'm having trouble figuring out how to access the non-current document in JS.
Thanks in advance for your help.
ADDED: Firefox style issue (see comment below).
I'm not sure where you're getting your HTML but, assuming you already have it in a string, you could create a document of your own, stuff your HTML into it, and then use the standard getElementById to pull out the piece you want. For example:
var doc = document.implementation.createDocument('http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml', 'html', null);
doc.documentElement.innerHTML = '<body><div>Nonsense</div><div id="news-header">Big Day in Wonderland</div><p>pancakes</p></body>';
var h = doc.getElementById('news-header');
// And now use `h` like any other DOM object.

Normally, I would try to solve an issue only with the tools specified by the user; but if you are using javascript, there really is no good reason not to just use jQuery.
<a id='mylink' href='url_of_new_article' linked_div='id_of_title'></a>
$(function() {
var a = $('#mylink');
a.load(a.attr('href') + ' #' + a.attr('linked_div'));
});
That little function up there can help you update all your link's text dynamically. If you have more than one, you can just put it in a $('a').each() loop and call it a day.
update to support multiple links on condition:
$(function() {
$('a[linked_div]').each(function() {
var a = $(this);
a.load(a.attr('href') + ' #' + a.attr('linked_div'));
});
});
The selector makes sure that only the links with the existence of the attribute 'linked_div' will be processed.
You need to pull the content of the remote document into the current DOM, as QuentinUK mentioned. I'd recommend something like jQuery's .load() method
