I want to update the bar chart with new data and I looked over this question:
How to update d3.js bar chart with new data
But it is not working for me. Probably because I don't know where to put the exit().remove() functions within my code. I tried putting this line
svg.selectAll("rect").exit().remove();
below the create bars section but it just removes all of the labels. Then, if I put it right after the create labels portion it removes the chart entirely. How can I get the update button change the chart with new data?
function draw(data) {
//Width and height
var w = 250;
var h = 250;
var xScale = d3.scale.ordinal()
.domain(d3.range(data.length))
.rangeRoundBands([0, w], 0.05);
var yScale = d3.scale.linear()
.domain([0, d3.max(data)])
.range([0, h]);
//Create SVG element
var svg = d3.select("#chart")
.append("svg")
.attr("width", w)
.attr("height", h);
//Create bars
svg.selectAll("rect")
.data(data)
.enter()
.append("rect")
.attr("x", function(d, i) {
return xScale(i);
})
.attr("y", function(d) {
return h - yScale(d);
})
.attr("width", xScale.rangeBand())
.attr("height", function(d) {
return yScale(d);
})
.attr("fill", "steelblue");
//Create labels
svg.selectAll("text")
.data(data)
.enter()
.append("text")
.text(function(d) {
return d;
})
.attr("text-anchor", "middle")
.attr("x", function(d, i) {
return xScale(i) + xScale.rangeBand() / 2;
})
.attr("y", function(d) {
return h - yScale(d) + 14;
})
.attr("font-family", "sans-serif")
.attr("font-size", "11px")
.attr("fill", "white");
};
function update() {
var data = [ 25, 22, 18, 15, 13 ];
draw(data);
}
var data = [ 21, 3, 5, 21, 15 ];
window.onload = draw(data);
With d3v3 (as I can see from your code you use this version) you should update your chart this way:
In update function set the new domain for yScale:
function update(newData) {
yScale.domain([0, d3.max(newData)]);
After that, apply new selection with selectAll("rect").data(newData), store selection in rects variable and set new value for appropriate attributes (if you do not want animation effect, remove .transition() .duration(300)):
var rects = d3.select("#chart svg")
.selectAll("rect")
.data(newData);
// enter selection
rects
.enter().append("rect");
// update selection
rects
.transition()
.duration(300)
.attr("y", function(d) {
return h - yScale(d);
})
.attr("height", function(d) {
return yScale(d);
})
Exit selection with exit method:
rects
.exit().remove();
Do the same way with text. I rewrite your code, look at the example in a hidden snippet below:
var myData = [21, 3, 5, 21, 15];
//Width and height
var w = 250;
var h = 250;
var yScale = null;
function draw(initialData) {
var xScale = d3.scale.ordinal()
.domain(d3.range(initialData.length))
.rangeRoundBands([0, w], 0.05);
yScale = d3.scale.linear()
.domain([0, d3.max(initialData)])
.range([0, h]);
//Create SVG element
var svg = d3.select("#chart")
.append("svg")
.attr("width", w)
.attr("height", h);
svg.selectAll("rect")
.data(initialData)
.enter()
.append("rect")
.attr("x", function(d, i) {
return xScale(i);
})
.attr("y", function(d) {
return h - yScale(d);
})
.attr("width", xScale.rangeBand())
.attr("height", function(d) {
return yScale(d);
})
.attr("fill", "steelblue");
svg.selectAll("text")
.data(initialData)
.enter()
.append("text")
.text(function(d) {
return d;
})
.attr("text-anchor", "middle")
.attr("x", function(d, i) {
return xScale(i) + xScale.rangeBand() / 2;
})
.attr("y", function(d) {
return h - yScale(d) + 14;
})
.attr("font-family", "sans-serif")
.attr("font-size", "11px")
.attr("fill", "white");
}
function update(newData) {
yScale.domain([0, d3.max(newData)]);
var rects = d3.select("#chart svg")
.selectAll("rect")
.data(newData);
// enter selection
rects
.enter().append("rect");
// update selection
rects
.transition()
.duration(300)
.attr("y", function(d) {
return h - yScale(d);
})
.attr("height", function(d) {
return yScale(d);
})
// exit selection
rects
.exit().remove();
var texts = d3.select("#chart svg")
.selectAll("text")
.data(newData);
// enter selection
texts
.enter().append("rect");
// update selection
texts
.transition()
.duration(300)
.attr("y", function(d) {
return h - yScale(d) + 14;
})
.text(function(d) {
return d;
})
// exit selection
texts
.exit().remove();
}
window.onload = draw(myData);
setInterval(function() {
var data = d3.range(5).map(function() {
return parseInt(Math.random() * 20 + 1);
});
update(data);
}, 3000)

I drawn a stackedbar Chart in which now I trying to place the Total value(I mean the yaxis value) on tip of the every rectangle. I have coded to fetch the details but here the problem is I am getting Every Layer value on tip of every layer but i need to show only the last layer value.
the problem is shown in below fig's.
My code is Shown below

can anyone help me.
Here is what you need: First, we'll set fData as the data for the texts:
layer.selectAll("text.rect")
.data(fData)
.enter()
.append("text")
But, as this dataset doesn't have the correct yScale value, we'll have to extract it using a filter:
.attr("y", function (d) {
var filtered = fData.filter(function(e){
return e.Total_Units == d.Total_Units
});
return y(filtered[0].Total_Lines) - 3;
})
All together:
layer.selectAll("text.rect")
.data(fData)
.enter().append("text")
.attr("text-anchor", "middle")
.attr("x", function(d) {
return xScale(d.orders) + xScale.rangeBand() / 2;
})
.attr("y", function(d) {
var filtered = fData.filter(function(e) {
return e.Total_Units == d.Total_Units
});
return y(filtered[0].Total_Lines) - 3;
})
.text(function(d) {
return d.Total_Units
})
.style("fill", "4682b4");
Here is your fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/wnwb6meh/
I have a bar chart that updates based on the results selected in a drop-down menu. When I change the selcetion, I get negaitve "y" values. It seems that my domain does not get updated with the new data. When I hard code the domain, my "y" are what I expect them to be. Anyone knows why ? Any other other comments (formatting, etc) welcomed.

Firgured out what was my problem. I hadn't defined the format of the values. The max function was returning the maximum number out of character values (9). I added the following piece of code prior to the domain function and everything now works fines.
csv_data.forEach(function(d) {
d.dept = d.dept;
d.Pos = d.Pos;
d.Value = +d.Value;
});

The code above is essentially the same as that in the fiddle I've linked to up top, except that it includes 2 buttons, and has the legend, svg, and heatmap variables declared globally.
Here's the meat of my question, which has to do with the update function I created to load in two new CSVs:
function updateHeatmap(x){
svg.selectAll(".legend").attr("opacity", 0);
d3.csv(x, function(d){
return {
day:+d.day2,
hour:+d.hour,
value:+d.per_day_per_hour
};
},
function(error, data){
colorScale = d3.scale.quantile()
.domain([0, (d3.max(data, function(d){return d.value;})/2), d3.max(data, function(d){return d.value;})])
.range(colors);
var heatMap = svg.selectAll(".hour")
.data(data)
.transition().duration(1000)
.style("fill", function(d){ return colorScale(d.value);});
heatMap.selectAll("title").text(function(d) {return d.value;});
var legend = svg.selectAll(".legend")
.data([0].concat(colorScale.quantiles()), function(d) {return d;})
.enter().append("g")
.attr("class", "legend");
legend.append("rect")
.attr("x", function(d, i){ return legendElementWidth * i;})
.attr("y", height)
.attr("width", legendElementWidth)
.attr("height", gridSize/2)
.style("fill", function(d, i) {return colors[i]; });
legend.append("text")
.attr("class", "mono")
.text(function(d) {return "≥ "+d.toString().substr(0,4);})
.attr("x", function(d, i){ return legendElementWidth *i;})
.attr("y", height+ gridSize);
}
)
}
I've managed to update the color of the heatmap squares (huzzah), but can't get the legend that sits below the heatmap to cooperate, and can't get the values underlying each square to display on hover like I did on initial loading. I get a feeling that it's because my JS is pretty flaky (as is, let's face it, my D3), but can't be sure — I think it may have to do with my screwing up the appropriate syntax for selecting the text element (i.e., I'm unsure of how to do it the right way).
To sum up: legend in this heatmap (here's the gist block) isn't updating properly, and the on-hover values for each of the squares don't appear on update. Yikes. Any suggestions?
I've updated my example to allow switching between datasets - this should help.

I cannot figure out why during the chart transitions in the attached JSFiddle the bars do not refresh properly.
If you click on "CLICK ME" a few times you will see that when DATA1 is selected (for example) bars for x values of 13 to 19 do not appear. I have three data sets that the chart randomly picks to use in refreshing itself, each with a different number of x-values.
Can someone help me understand please. Thank you in advance!

You need to handle the .enter() and .exit() selections in your update functions as well, as the data sets are of different size:
var sel = svg.selectAll(".bar") // change the bar
.data(data);
sel.exit().remove();
sel.enter().append("rect")
.on('mouseover', tip.show)
.on('mouseout', tip.hide)
.attr("class", "bar");
sel.transition().delay(function (d, i) {
return i / data.length * 1000;
})...
Complete example here.
