My code:
$(document).ready(function() {
var up = false;
$('#that_list').slideUp();
$('#updates').click(function() {
$('#that_list').slideToggle(200);
});
});
It works, but if I click the anchor called updates too many times the list of items called that_list slides up and down multiple times after I stop clicking. I'm pretty new to jquery and javascript and have not found a solution to this on the website (maybe I'm not searching for the right question.)

I created a header using jquery.flip.js, found at https://github.com/nnattawat/flip. The plugin allows several ways to trigger the flip, the two relevant ones are 'click' and 'hover'. I was hoping to have the div's flip at random intervals automatically. I did find a similar question on stackoverflow that Heretic Monkey suggested using a recursive approach (Trigger mouse click and random intervals)...
var clickHand = function() {
$("[id^='hand_'].handIcon").trigger('click');
setTimeout(clickHand, (Math.random() * 3000) + 32000);
}
clickHand();
EDIT: sorry for not being clear. In the jquery code, the following method (?) handles the flip on click, however what I would like to do is have the divs flip automatically (if possible) without a hover or click to trigger. I tried using a setTimeout inside attachEvents, but it seemed to cause an issue with the styling.
attachEvents: function() {
var self = this;
if (self.setting.trigger === "click") {
self.element.on($.fn.tap ? "tap.flip" : "click.flip", $.proxy(self.clickHandler, self));
} else if (self.setting.trigger === "hover") {
self.element.on('mouseenter.flip', $.proxy(self.hoverHandler, self));
self.element.on('mouseleave.flip', $.proxy(self.unflip, self));
}
},
I am pretty new to javascript and am having a difficult time with this and any help would be appreciated.
I created a simple codepen, demonstrating the 3D flip, https://codepen.io/coeyflyer/pen/eYZGymG.
Thank you for any suggestions,

I have created a webpage that uses jQuery to show and hide elements. The obvious problem now arose; the back and forward browser buttons don't work anymore as everything is loaded within a single location.
I know the answer lies within jQuery History but after busting my head for several hours on their website and examples given here on stackoverflow, I still cant manage to:
A) create a history entry (I think i got this covered but not 100% sure)
B) animate the page transition with my own function (displayed beneath)
This is the website: www.grommit.nl
There are 4 sub-pages that require a history entry when called upon.
This code shows the transition of the "wordpress page". The other pages work in a similiar way. (so far I have only managed to generalize the last part of the pageload with the "LoadPageContent" function, the bit before that is different with every page)
var LoadPageContent = function() {
$(".sceneBody").slideDown(function() {
$(".aftertitle").css('width', '4em');
$(".mediacontainer").fadeTo('0.3s', 1,)
});
$("#goWordpress").click(function () {
$("#homeScene").fadeOut(function () {
$("#wordpressMessage").fadeIn(function() {
$(this).delay(300).slideUp(function() {
$("#wordpressPage, #grommitFixed").slideDown(function() {
LoadPageContent();
});
});
});
});
});
this is the function that is currently working as a previous button within the DOM. I would like this function to execute when the previous button is clicked.
var goBack = function() {
$(".aftertitle").css('width', '0em')
$(".mediacontainer").fadeTo('0.3s', 0, function() {
$(".scenebody, #grommitFixed").slideUp(function() {
$("*[id*=Page]:visible").each(function() {
$(this).slideUp(function() {
$("#homeScene").fadeIn();
});
});
});
});
};
In html5 you have something called pushstate, that you can use to tell the browser what to go back to. Check out:
html pushstate
I've got a container that includes several icons the user can hover over and be shown a block of text next to it. I'm grabbing the blocks of text from an array and have a randomize function so that they're always shown a different block of text when revisiting the page.
I ran into an issue where every time you hover over an icon, it keeps adding more array elements, because the function gets called each time you hover over the icon. So I decided to use the one() method so the function only runs once, however that's where my real issue is. Using the one() method doesn't show ANY text, and I'm pretty sure it's due to the nested function I have.
You can test this out here: http://www.evanvolmering.com/bootstrap/docs/examples/carousel/eyeswideshut.html
In the banner a video will play, and shortly into it a little icon will appear in the bottom of left of the banner. Hovering over it will show some text. When you hover over it again it adds another array item, and so on. It works, but I don't want it to keep adding array items.
10 seconds later another icon will appear to the top right, which currently has the one() method applied to it. As you can see nothing happens when you hover over it. Not sure where to go from here.
My randomize code (which I got from another StackOverflow answer):
var numRandoms = 14;
function makeUniqueRandom() {
if (!uniqueRandoms.length) {
for (var i = 0; i < numRandoms; i++) {
uniqueRandoms.push(i);
}
}
var index = Math.floor(Math.random() * uniqueRandoms.length);
var val = uniqueRandoms[index];
uniqueRandoms.splice(index, 1);
return val;
}
My code which currently 'works' but keeps adding more array items on hover:
$('img.button1').hover(function(){
$('p.trivia1').fadeIn("slow");
$( 'p.trivia1' ).append(makeUniqueRandom());
},
function(){
$("p.trivia1").stop().fadeOut("slow");
});
My code that uses one() but doesn't do anything on hover:
$('img.button2').one("hover",function(){
$('p.trivia2').fadeIn("slow");
$( 'p.trivia2' ).append(makeUniqueRandom());
},
function(){
$("p.trivia2").stop().fadeOut("slow");
});
Use mouseenter/mouseleave instead of hover
$('img.button1').on('mouseenter',function(){
$('p.trivia1').fadeIn("slow");
$( 'p.trivia1' ).append(makeUniqueRandom());
}).on('mouseleave',function(){
$("p.trivia1").stop().fadeOut("slow");
});
What I am trying to do is have four links that each will display and hide a certain div when clicked. I am using slideToggle and I was able to get it to work with really sloppy and repetitive code. A friend of mine gave me a script he used and I tried it out and finally was able to get something to happen. However, all it does is hide the div and wont redisplay. Also it hides all the divs instead of just the specific one. Here is a jsfiddle I made. Hopefully you guys can understand what I am trying to do and help! Thanks alot.
Here is the script I'm using.
$(document).ready(function () {
$(".click_me").on('click', function () {
var $faq = $(this).next(".hide_div");
$faq.slideToggle();
$(".hide_div").not($faq).slideUp();
});
});

Here's a link to a fiddle. http://jsfiddle.net/uo15brz1/7/
I changed your markup a little, adding id attributes to your divs. The jquery, gets the name attribute from the link that's clicked, adds a # to the front, hides the visible div, then toggles the respective div. I also added e.preventDefault to stop the browser from navigating due to the hash change. As an aside, javascript don't require the $ prefix.
$(document).ready(function () {
$(".click_me").on('click', function (e) {
e.preventDefault();
var name = $(this).attr('name');
var target = $("#" + name);
if(target.is(':visible')){
return false; //ignore the click if div is visible
}
target.insertBefore('.hide_div:eq(0)'); //put this item above other .hide_div elments, makes the animation prettier imo
$('.hide_div').slideUp(); //hide all divs on link click
target.slideDown(); // show the clicked one
});
});
Welcome to Stack Overflow!
Here's a fiddle:

Basically, you need a way to point to the relevant content <div> based on the link that's clicked. It would be tricky to do that in a robust way with your current markup, so I've edited it. The examples in the jquery documentation are pretty good. Spend some time studying them, they are a great way to start out.
I need to prevent link from being clicked for let's say 2 seconds.
Here is an example http://jsbin.com/orinib/4/edit
When you look at the rendered mode you see next and prev links. When you click next, it slides with a nice transition. However if you click multiple times there is no transition sort of, which is expected. But my question: is this how can I prevent clicking on the next link, for about 2 seconds (or what ever time it takes for transition to happen) so that no matter what transition will occur.
This is what I tried to use, but did not work:
function(){
var thePreventer = false;
$("#next").bind($(this),function(e){
if(!thePreventer){
thePreventer = true;
setTimeout(function(){
thePreventer = false;
}, 2000);
}else{
e.preventDefault();
}
});
}
Which I got from here "Disable" a link temporarily when clicked? I think. I believe that i cannot achieve this effect with this code (although it works on other links). I believe this is due to the fact that cycle-plugin got a hold of that link, and I understand that I have to bind/tap-into this functionality of the plugin. Please note: that this code may not work I just used it to show that I tried it and it did not work, you can reuse it if you have to or give me your own stuff.
Please help, if you can.
EDIT:
As mrtsherman proposed this simple yet elegant ANSWER: http://jsfiddle.net/LCWLb.
Take a look at the cycle options page. There are a number of ways to do this. I would consider using the pager event onPrevNextEvent. You can assign a callback function.
$('#slideshow').cycle({
pager: '#nav',
onPrevNextEvent: function(isNext, zeroBasedSlideIndex, slideElement) {
//disable controls
},
after: function(currSlideElement, nextSlideElement, options, forwardFlag) {
//reenable controls
}
});
The following will temporarily prevent clicks while a slideshow is running, as shown in this fiddle:
$.fn.extend({
delayClick: function(callback) {
this.bind('click', function(e) {
$self = $(this);
if( $self.hasClass('disabled') ) {
$('#log').append('<p>click prevented on '+$self.attr('id')+'</p>');
}
else {
$self.addClass('disabled');
callback.call(this, [arguments]);
setTimeout(function() {
$self.removeClass('disabled');
}, 1000);
}
return false;
});
}
});
