Text Area interfering with Ajax Code - javascript

I am just trying to clear the text area with an id of "discussion" it clears the textbox but it does not load the data from the server with the ajax statement. When I remove the line that clears that text area it loads all the data in fine but just adds to the current data.
Here is my code:
function LoadRoomMessages(id)
{
$.ajax(
{
type: "Get",
url: "#Url.Action("GetMessages", "Home")",
data: { roomId: id },
success: function (data)
{
// Here is the line that causes issues.
$('#discussion').val('');
json = data;
var obj = JSON.parse(json);
for (var i = 0; i < data.length; i++)
{
$('#discussion').append(htmlEncode(obj[i].Author) + " : " + htmlEncode(obj[i].Message) + "\r\n");
}
}
});
}

You may also try (as you asked to answer it)
$('#discussion').empty();

Json object doubles on each return

Each time data returns from the PHP file, it seems like the json object are doubled is some way!? When I run the script for the first time I get 5 rows which is the same amount of rows in the table. But the second time, I get the result twice! What have I done wrong in my script?
function readData() {
$.ajax({
url: "read.php",
type: "POST",
dataType: "json",
data: {
input: 1
},
cache: false,
success: function(data) {
var html = "";
for (i = 0; i < data.length; i++) {
html += "<tr><td>" + data[i].text + "</td></tr>";
}
$(".contentList table").append(html);
},
});
}
Try changing
$(".contentList table").append(html);
to
$(".contentList table").html(html);
.append() will just append more results to the end of the content inside the tag, while .html() will completely replace the content.

Append the last message once

Hello guys i am trying to build a chat with Jquery , php , ajax and mysql
the problem that i am facing since few days is that when i get the value of the last message its keep getting append to the div what i want is to append the last message only once , and append again if there is a new message here is my ajax call
var chat = "";
$.ajax({
url: "php/gt_user.php",
type: "get",
success: function (result) {
var gtUser = $.parseJSON(result);
$.each(gtUser, function (idx, obj) {
var usrApp = "<span><i class='fa fa-user-circle-o' aria-hidden='true'></i>";
usrApp += "<p class='usr-name'>" + obj.Tables_in_chat + "</p></span>";
$('.userarea').append(usrApp);
}); // here i get all the username who sent a message and print them on a div
$('.userarea span').on('click', function () {
$('.msgarea').html("");
var usrName = $(this).text();
$('#usrname').text(usrName);
setInterval(function () {
$.ajax({
url: "php/admin_msg.php",
type: "post",
data: {
name: usrName
},
success: function (result) {
var lastmsg = result;
function appedn() {
var usrMsg = "<div class='usr-msg'><i class='fa fa-user-circle-o' aria-hidden='true'></i>";
usrMsg += "<span><p>" + lastmsg + "</p></span></div>";
$('.msgarea').append(usrMsg);
}
if (chat !== result) {
appedn();
} else {
chat = result;
}
}
});
}, 2000);
});
}
});
the respanse from php/admin_msg.php is working and i got the last message sucessfully the problem is that this script keep adding the same message to the message area , and what i want is to added the message only once if there is a new one
You need to somehow identify last message that is already appended to your html the best would be some id sent from server. So your message div should containt some data-id attribute, and then when you ask for next message get last children of $('.msgarea') element, read it data-id and compare with current one.
Another thing I would recommend to moving to some view library or framework, react, angular, vue or whatever. It gets complicated when you want to manage such features with pure jQuery.
i was finally able to fix the problem after 1 day of struggle so will post the answear here just in case it will help some one else facing the same issue
the part where i had to get all the username table from database i move it to my HTML and used a few line of php to echo the result like this(each user name has his own table)
// show all the user name that sent a message
$result = $con->query("show tables from chat");
while($row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($result)){
echo "<span><i class='fa fa-user-circle-o' aria-hidden='true'></i><p class='usr-name'>".$row['Tables_in_chat']."</p></span>";
}
then on my jquery script i moved the function that check for the last message every 2sec outside the click event so my Jquery script look more cleaner now
/* get the user name and added it to the header of the message box */
$('.userarea span').on('click', function () {
$('.msgarea').html("");
var usrName = $(this).text();
$('#usrname').text(usrName);
});
var chatdata = "";
/* check for new message and append the message area if there is a new one */
setInterval(function () {
var usrName = $('#usrname').text();
$.ajax({
url: "php/admin_msg.php",
type: "post",
data: {
name: usrName
},
success: function (result) {
function appedn() {
var usrMsg = "<div class='usr-msg'><i class='fa fa-user-circle-o' aria-hidden='true'></i>";
usrMsg += "<span><p>" + result + "</p></span></div>";
$('.msgarea').append(usrMsg);
}
if (chatdata !== result) {
appedn();
chatdata = result;
}
}
});
}, 2000);

success: function(data){
var list = JSON.parse(data);
for(var i = 0; i < list.length; i++){
$('#mat').val((list[i]['material']));
$('#lok').val((list[i]['lokasi']));
$('#kpl').val((list[i]['kapal']));
$('#po_numb').val((list[i]['po']));
$('#dok').val((list[i]['doc_mat']));

tr += "<td>"+list[i]['no_pol']+"</td>";
tr += "<td>"+list[i]['netto']+"</td>";
tr += "</tr>";
$("#table_s tbody").append(tr);
}
return false;

how to count total number of ajax response data sets inside for loop?

i am calling an ajax and output api response in textbox. I want count total number of data sets received(counteri) and display it each time i click a button. For example if i click the button first time i want to an alert display counteri=20 and next time i click button it display counteri=40 and... counteri=60.
Currently my code keeps showing 20 each time and not adding the values. could any one tell me how to fix this.Thanks
<script>
var maxnumId = null;
var counteri= null;
function callApi() {
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
dataType: "jsonp",
cache: false,
url: "https://api.somesite.com/......"),
success: function(data) {
maxnumId = data.pagination.next_num_id;
for (var i = 0; i < 100; i++) {
$(".galaxy").append("<div class='galaxy-placeholder'><a target='_blank' href='" + data.data[i].link +"'><img class='galaxy-image' src='" + ok.images.standard_resolution.url +"' /></a></div>");
document.myform.outputtext.value = document.myform.outputtext.value+data.data[i].images.ok.url+'\n' ;
//alert('www!'+i);
counteri=i;
}
}
});
counteri=counteri+counteri;
alert('counteri is now: ' + counteri);
}
</script>
<body>
<br>
<center>
<div id="myDiv"></div>
<div class="galaxy"></div>
<button id="mango" onclick="callApi()">Load More</button>
</html>
EDIT:
Adding this in start of success added up total number of records from ajax response
var num_records = Object.keys(data.data).length;
num_records2=num_records2+num_records;
alert('number of records:'+ num_records2);
and
var num_records2 =null; // outside function
Ajax are async calls.
Move the alert to just after the for. Not outside the success callback.
Looks like the problem is that you are setting counteri to the value of i instead of adding the value of i. Try this instead:
counteri += i;
Ajax calls are asynchronous. You should increment your counter on success, not outside of the ajax call. Something like this:
function callApi() {
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
dataType: "jsonp",
cache: false,
url: "https://api.somesite.com/......",
success: function(data) {
maxnumId = data.pagination.next_num_id;
for (var i = 0; i < 100; i++) {
document.myform.outputtext.value = document.myform.outputtext.value+data.data[i].images.ok.url+'\n' ;
}
counteri=counteri+i;
alert('counteri is now: ' + counteri);
}
});
}
Considering that your ajax request is executed with success, to get what you want you need to declare the i variable before for ( ....) loop as is the follow script:
var counteri = 0;
function callApi() {
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
dataType: "jsonp",
cache: false,
url: "https://api.somesite.com/......",
success: function(data) {
var i,
maxnumId = data.pagination.next_num_id;
for (i = 0; i < 100; i++) {
document.myform.outputtext.value = document.myform.outputtext.value+data.data[i].images.ok.url+'\n' ;
}
counteri=counteri+i;
alert('counteri is now: ' + counteri);
}
});
}
Please ses here demo
EDIT
Also i have rechecked if the variable i is not declared before for(...) loop and works OK. So, the only fix is to remove counter=i from for(...) loop and to change the counteri=counteri+counteri; to counteri+=i;
Take in consideration that the ajax requests produce a number of different events that you can subscribe to. Depending of your needs you can combine this events to accomplish the desired behavior. The complete list of ajax events is explained here
EDIT2
After reading your comments, i see that you need the last value of i globally,
you need to add a second global variable too keep the sum of last i during all ajax requests.
To do this, id have added a minor change to answer:
var counteri = 0,
totali =0;
function callApi() {
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
dataType: "jsonp",
cache: false,
url: "https://api.somesite.com/......",
success: function(data) {
var i,
maxnumId = data.pagination.next_num_id;
for (i = 0; i < 100; i++) {
document.myform.outputtext.value = document.myform.outputtext.value+data.data[i].images.ok.url+'\n' ;
}
counteri = i;
totali = totali + i;
alert('totali is now: ' + totali );
}
});
}
JSFiddle demo
EDIT 3
After your last comment, you need to add in the API response the number of returned rows. For this, you need to change for (i = 0; i < 100; i++) { to something like this:
var num_records = data.num_rows;
for (i = 0; i < num_records ; i++) {
or, without adding the number of rows in response
var num_records = Object.keys(data.data).length;
for (i = 0; i < num_records ; i++) {

AJAX whenever I try to submit my text my div area duplicates the current data displayed plus my new data

Hi I have a working script of retrieving a JSON data result for my small chat application but my problem is that it displays a duplicate result of the text that was already posted plus my newly text that was inserted from my DB
here is my whole Javascript code:
function sendChatText() {
if (sendReq.readyState == 4 || sendReq.readyState == 0) {
sendReq.open("POST", 'includes/getChat.php?last=' + lastMessage, true);
sendReq.setRequestHeader('Content-Type','application/x-www-form-urlencoded');
sendReq.onreadystatechange = AjaxRetrieve();
var param = 'message=' + document.getElementById('txtA').value;
param += '&name='+user;
param += '&uid='+uid;
param += '&rid='+document.getElementById('trg').value;
sendReq.send(param);
document.getElementById('txtA').value = '';
}
}
function AjaxRetrieve()
{
var rid = document.getElementById('trg').value,
data = {chat: uid, rid: rid, name: user};
$.ajax({
url: "includes/getChat.php",
type: "GET",
data: data,
dataType: 'json',
success: function(result){
$.each(result, function(rowKey, row) {
$("#clog").append($('<p />').html('<h4>'+ row.username +':</h4>' + row.message_content) );
});
}
});
}
I think your getChat.php returns all the chat text for that user, also you are appending them to #clog.
I have two suggestions
Return only the latest text from server by sending the time stamp from the JS itself like
data = {"chat": uid, "rid": rid, "name": user, "last_read_time": window.last_read_time};
window.last_read_time = new Date().format("d/M/yyyy hh:mm:ss tt"); //store new time
clear #clog before looping your data
$("#clog").empty(); //clear the previous msgs
$.each(result, function(rowKey, row) {
$("#clog").append($('<p />').html('<h4>'+ row.username +':</h4>' + row.message_content);
});
