Issue with validating a user-selected amount of appended input forms - javascript

I'm trying to validate a set of inputs that are being appended based on a pre-selected value.
Psudo-code version:
Select from a list of options with values set from 0-10
On change Javascript appends 0-10 input forms with incrementing values of w, starting from 0 (so the names are dinnerform0, dinnerform1, dinnerform2, etc for all that exist).
$('#dinnerQty').change(function(){
dinnerQty = $('#dinnerQty').val() ;
if(dinnerQty > 0){
$('#dinnerForm').empty();
$('#dinnerFormCont').show();
for (w = 0; w <= (dinnerQty-1); w++) {
$('#dinnerForm').append('<div class="dinnerformcloneinput"> <input type="text" class="foodform" name="dinnerFirstName' + w +'" placeholder="First Name" /> <input type="text" class="foodform" name="dinnerLastName'+ w +'" placeholder="Last Name" /> </div>')
}
} else {
$('#dinnerFormCont').hide();
$('#dinnerForm').empty();
}
});
For Validation I've been trying to do it based on each input like this but haven't been able to get it to work.
$('input .foodform').each(function() {
if ($("input").val() == ""){
alert("You must enter a First and Last Name for each Dinner Guest");
return false;
}
}
Thanks for any help!

Try this like,
$('input.foodform').each(function() {
// -----^ remove space from here if you input has foodform class
if (this.value == ""){ // use this.value or $(this).val()
alert("You must enter a First and Last Name for each Dinner Guest");
return false;
}
});

How to split string of input tag HTML?

When a user enters the below link in an input tag, I just want the last part of the string, in order to minimize input mistakes - the two input fields generate a new link that the user can copy and use.
name:id:5icOoE6VgqFKohjWWNp0Ac (I just want the last '5icOoE6VgqFKohjWWNp0Ac' part)
Can anyone help me with amending the below to achieve this?
function generateFullName() {
document.getElementById('txtFullName').value = ('https://nlproducts.nl/item/') + document.getElementById('fName').value + ('?context=') + document.getElementById('lName').value;
}
Enter a product ID:
<input type="text" id="fName" placeholder='0A5gdlrpAuQqZ2iFgnqBFW' />
Enter a user ID:
<input type="text" id="lName" oninput="generateFullName()" placeholder='37i9dQZF1DXcBWIGoYBM5M'/><br/></p>
Tada! This would be the link for your campaign:
<input type="text" id="txtFullName" name="txtFullName" />
Here's a JavaScript function that takes a string as input, and formats it to only keep the last part after the last colon (if it contains a colon):
function parseColon(txt) {
return txt.split(":").slice(-1).pop();
}
Eg. parseColon("a:b:c") would return "c"
You can validate your inputs with:
function isValidInput(txt) {
numberOfColons = txt.split(":").length - 1;
if (txt.length == 32 && numberOfColons == 2)
return true
return false
}
In your code you can use these two functions to check & parse lName and fName like this:
function generateFullName() {
var lName_val = document.getElementById('lName').value;
var fName_val = document.getElementById('fName').value;
//fill in link in the output if fName and lName are valid inputs
if(isValidInput(fName_val) && isValidInput(lName_val))
document.getElementById('txtFullName').value = ('https://nlproducts.nl/item/') + parseColon(fName_val) + ('?context=') + parseColon(lName_val);
// otherwise, clear the output field
else
document.getElementById('txtFullName').value = "";
}
function parseColon(txt) {
// return the part after the last colon
return txt.split(":").slice(-1).pop();
}
function isValidInput(txt) {
numberOfColons = txt.split(":").length - 1;
if (txt.length == 38 && numberOfColons == 2)
return true
return false
}
Enter a product ID:<br>
<input type="text" id="fName" oninput="generateFullName()" placeholder='0A5gdlrpAuQqZ2iFgnqBFW' size="50"/><br/>
Enter a user ID:<br>
<input type="text" id="lName" oninput="generateFullName()" placeholder='37i9dQZF1DXcBWIGoYBM5M' size="50"/><br/><br/>
Tada! This would be the link for your campaign:<br>
<input type="text" id="txtFullName" name="txtFullName" size="50"/>

Determining if a user input field is empty

I've looked at some of the answers here but for some reason, I can't get this to work. I want the user to grade something and if they input nothing in the required field and press "Grade", I want for it to alert something.
function Script() {
var G = document.getElementById("gradevalue").value
if (G == null || G == undefined) {
window.alert("Please input a grade");
}
}
<label id="grade">|Please grade on a scale from 1 to 10 (10 is the best!)
<input id="gradevalue" type="text"; size="2"; maxlength="2">
</label>
<input type="button" value="GRADE!" id="nota" onclick="Script()">
I'm very new at this, so please don't be too harsh.
I think, you can simply check it like:
if (!Number(G)) {
window.alert("Please input a grade");
}
this is going to be true if G is null, undefined, '', 0, false and NaN and any strings that are not converted to numbers.
function CheckGrade () {
var G = document.getElementById("gradevalue").value;
if(!Number(G)) {
window.alert("Please input a grade");
} else {
//your code here, maybe some othe validation logic
}
}
<label id="grade">|Please grade on a scale from 1 to 10 (10 is the best!)
<input id="gradevalue" type="number" min="1" max="10"/>
</label>
<input type="button" value="GRADE!" id="nota" onclick="CheckGrade()">
UPDATE Added a code sample and minor mistakes.
Checking !G || G == 0 seems to do the job:
function Script() {
var G = document.getElementById("gradevalue").value
if(!G || G == 0) {
window.alert("Please input a grade");
}
}
<label id="grade">|Please grade on a scale from 1 to 10 (10 is the best!)
<input id="gradevalue" type="text"; size="2"; maxlength="2">
</label>
<input type="button" value="GRADE!" id="nota" onclick="Script()">
Note that you may also want to check for > 11 values:
if (!G) {
window.alert("Please input a grade");
} else if(G == 0 || G > 10) {
window.alert("Please input a grade between 1 and 10");
}
You are also must there, in JavaScript you can just check if the variable has a value assigned to it, if it doesn't then the bool expression will be false. I have done a quick CodePen with the working code https://codepen.io/robdavis/pen/bRVxdm
function Script() {
var g = document.getElementById("gradevalue").value
if (!g) {
window.alert("Please enter a Grade");
}
}

How do I print user input with the first letter of each word capitalized?

I am working with a form and would like to print the user's input with the first letter of each word capitalized no matter how they type it in. For example, I want the user's "ronALd SmItH" to print as Rondald Smith. I would also like to do this for the address and city. I have read all of the similar questions and answers on here and they are not working for me. I am not sure if I am putting my code in the wrong place or what I'm doing wrong.
This is the code I am using:
function correctFormat(customer)
{
var first = customer.charAt(0).toUpperCase();
var rest = customer.substring(1).toLowerCase();
return first + rest;
}
I have tried placing that in a variety of places within the whole document, I have tried renaming the string (eg. name, city, address). I have also read the others postings on here with what seems like the same question as this but none are working. I am not entering a string that I want capitalized. The user is entering their data into a form and I need it to print in an alert in the correct format. Here is the above code within the entire document. I am sorry it is so long but I am again, at a loss.

You can use regular expression, such as this:
function correctFormat(customer){
return customer.replace(/\b(.)(.*?)\b/g, function(){
return arguments[1].toUpperCase() + arguments[2].toLowerCase();
});
}
Your function only capitalizes the first letter of the string but not the first letter of each word. You can try splitting the string into separate words using string.split(' '):
function correctFormat(customer)
{
if (customer == null || customer.length == 0)
return customer;
var words = customer.split(/\s+/g);
for (var i = 0; i < words.length; ++i) {
var first = words[i].charAt(0).toUpperCase();
var rest = words[i].substring(1).toLowerCase();
words[i] = first + rest;
}
return words.join(' ');
}
I also noticed that you do not call correctFormat anywhere. You need to call the function in order for it to be executed. For example:
var customer = correctFormat(document.PizzaForm.customer.value);
As mentioned by #Wee You, you use customer for the first letter but use name for the rest letters. You have to call this function with user inputs and then update text in dom with the correct format.
function correctFormat(str)
{
var first = str.charAt(0).toUpperCase();
var rest = str.substring(1).toLowerCase();
return first + rest;
}
Here's a tiny example of the code you need:
Pass to the .replace() method every name part:
var PizzaForm = document.PizzaForm;
var customer = PizzaForm.customer;
function formatName() {
this.value = this.value.replace(/([^ \t]+)/g, function(_, str) {
var A = str.charAt(0).toUpperCase();
var bc = str.substring(1).toLowerCase();
return A + bc;
});
}
customer.addEventListener("input", formatName);
<form name="PizzaForm">
Name: <input name="customer" size="50" type="text">
</form>
the above will work also on Paste. Have fun
PS: instead of all that doClear(){ wall of code, why don't you reset your form by simply using: PizzaForm.reset();
Try this function
function correctFormat(customer)
{
var upperText = customer.toLowerCase();
var result = upperText.charAt(0).toUpperCase();
for(var i=1;i<upperText.length;i++)
if(upperText.charAt(i-1) == ' ')
result += upperText.charAt(i).toUpperCase();
else
result += upperText.charAt(i);
return result;
}

How to validate if textbox value is empty in a series of textboxes?

There are a series of textboxes like:
<input type="text" class="jq-textBox" />
<input type="text" class="jq-textBox" />
<input type="text" class="jq-textBox" />
<input type="text" class="jq-textBox" />
<input type="text" class="jq-textBox" />
User can fill up the textbox values from top to bottom order. Only first textbox is required and all other textboxes are optional.
Allowed order to fill textbox values:
1st
1st & 2nd
1st, 2nd & 3rd
and likewise in sequence order
Dis-allowed order:
2nd
1st & 3rd
1st, 2nd & 4th
This means that user needs to fill up the first textbox only or can fill up the other textboxes in sequential order. User can NOT skip one textbox and then fillup the next one.
How to validate this in javascript/jQuery?
Any help is highly appreciated!
I would personaly use the disabled html attribute.
See this jsFiddle Demo
html
<form>
<input type="text" class="jq-textBox" required="required" />
<input type="text" class="jq-textBox" disabled="disabled" />
<input type="text" class="jq-textBox" disabled="disabled" />
<input type="text" class="jq-textBox" disabled="disabled" />
<input type="text" class="jq-textBox" disabled="disabled" />
<input type="submit" />
</form>
(Note the required attribute for HTML5)
jquery
$('input.jq-textBox').on('keyup', function(){
var next = $(this).next('input.jq-textBox');
if (next.length) {
if ($.trim($(this).val()) != '') next.removeAttr('disabled');
else {
var nextAll = $(this).nextAll('input.jq-textBox');
nextAll.attr('disabled', 'disbaled');
nextAll.val('');
}
}
})
Also see nextAll() jquery Method
Edit :
If you want to hide the disabled inputs in order to show them only when the previous input is filled, just add this css :
input[disabled] {
display: none;
}
Demo
You can iterate over the list backwards to quickly figure out whether there is a gap.
var last = false,
list = $(".jq-textBox").get().reverse();
$.each(list, function (idx) {
if ($(this).val() !== "") {
last = true;
}
else if (last) {
alert("you skipped one");
}
else if (list.length === idx + 1) {
alert("must enter 1");
}
});
http://jsfiddle.net/rnRPA/1/
Try
var flag = false, valid = true;
$('.jq-textBox').each(function(){
var value = $.trim(this.value);
if(flag && value.length !=0){
valid = false;
return false;
}
if(value.length == 0){
flag = true;
}
});
if(!valid){
console.log('invalid')
}
Demo: Fiddle
You can find all inputs that are invalid (filled in before the previous input) this way:
function invalidFields() {
return $('.jq-textBox')
.filter(function(){ return !$(this).val(); })
.next('.jq-textBox')
.filter(function(){ return $(this).val(); });
}
You can then test for validity:
if (invalidFields().length) {
// invalid
}
You can modify invalid fields:
invalidFields().addClass('invalid');
To make the first field required, just add the HTML attribute required to it.
I think a more elegant solution would be to only display the first textbox, and then reveal the second once there is some input in the first, and then so on (when they type in the second, reveal the third). You could combine this with other solutions for testing the textboxes.
To ensure the data is entered into the input elements in the correct order, you can set up a system which modifies the disabled and readonly states accordingly:
/* Disable all but the first textbox. */
$('input.jq-textBox').not(':first').prop('disabled', true);
/* Detect when the textbox content changes. */
$('body').on('blur', 'input.jq-textBox', function() {
var
$this = $(this)
;
/* If the content of the textbox has been cleared, disable this text
* box and enable the previous one. */
if (this.value === '') {
$this.prop('disabled', true);
$this.prev().prop('readonly', false);
return;
}
/* If this isn't the last text box, set it to readonly. */
if(!$this.is(':last'))
$this.prop('readonly', true);
/* Enable the next text box. */
$this.next().prop('disabled', false);
});
JSFiddle demo.
With this a user is forced to enter more than an empty string into an input field before the next input is essentially "unlocked". They can't then go back and clear the content of a previous input field as this will now be set to readonly, and can only be accessed if all following inputs are also cleared.
JS
var prevEmpty = false;
var validated = true;
$(".jq-textBox").each(function(){
if($(this).val() == ""){
prevEmpty = true;
}else if($(this).val() != "" && !prevEmpty){
console.log("nextOne");
}else{
validated = false;
return false;
}
});
if(validated)
alert("ok");
else
alert("ERROR");
FIDDLE
http://jsfiddle.net/Wdjzb/1/
Perhaps something like this:
var $all = $('.jq-textBox'),
$empty = $all.filter(function() { return 0 === $.trim(this.value).length; }),
valid = $empty.length === 0
|| $empty.length != $all.length
&& $all.index($empty.first()) + $empty.length === $all.length;
// do something depending on whether valid is true or false
Demo: http://jsfiddle.net/3UzHf/ (thanks to Arun P Johny for the starting fiddle).
That is, if the index of the first empty item plus the total number of empties adds up to the total number of items then all the empties must be at the end.

});
var checkEmpty = function ()
{
var formInvalid = false;
$('#MyForm').each(function () {
if ($(this).val() === '') {
formInvalid = true;
}
});
if (formInvalid) {
alert('One or more fields are empty. Please fill up all fields');
return false;
}
else
return true;
}

How to check value length with using Javascript?

Hello everyone I would like to ask how to check value's length from textbox ?
Here is my code :
#*<script>
function validateForm() {
var x = document.forms["frm"]["txtCardNumber"].value;
if (x == null || x == "" ) {
alert("First name must be filled out");
return false;
}
}
</script>*#
When I run my script yeap I got alert message but I'm trying to add property which control the texbox' input length.
You could use x.length to get the length of the string:
if (x.length < 5) {
alert('please enter at least 5 characters');
return false;
}
Also I would recommend you using the document.getElementById method instead of document.forms["frm"]["txtCardNumber"].
So if you have an input field:
<input type="text" id="txtCardNumber" name="txtCardNumber" />
you could retrieve its value from the id:
var x = document.getElementById['txtCardNumber'].value;
Still more better script would be:
<input type="text" name="txtCardNumber" id="txtCardNumber" />
And in the script:
if (document.getElementById(txtCardNumber).value.length < 5) {
alert('please enter at least 5 characters');
return false;
}
