I'm trying to find a div with a specific class or id, then adding a custom HTML5 data attribute to it. For example:
Find:
<div class="mydv">Hello</div>
Then add data-customtype="one" so it becomes
<div class="mydv" data-customtype="one">Hello</div>
However, the following code does not seem to work:
$('.mydv').data('customtype','one');
jQuery's .data() function will not add an HTML5 data tag, the data will be saved to the computer's memory instead. The user will have to use .attr() in order to add a physical attribute to the tag.
This example will work:
$('.mydv').attr('data-customtype','one');
you should use .data() to get/set data attributes:
$('.mydv').data('customtype','one');
Working Fiddle
Do it like this simply.
to set the value:
$('.mydiv').attr('data-customtype','one');
to get the value:
$('.mydiv').attr('data-customtype');

I'd like to use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create a menu that looks like so:
Each Chapter has a little "node" to the left of it that when clicked would bring the user to that chapter's dedicated web page. Is this something that could be done using canvas elements in HTML?
You could create the images for the bullets and then use the list-style-image property when styling list. You can then use JavaScript to keep track of the state. Assign the appropriate image based on what the user has clicked.
If you need a sample of the code to get this working let me see how far you get then I can add pointers.

I love JQuery, I do, but just for fun I'd like to learn how to write the following in pure/vanilla JS.
$("iframe").contents().find("<style>").html(cssEditor.value))
Something like this should work:
document
.getElementsByTagName('iframe')[0]
.contentDocument
.getElementsByTagName('style')[0]
.innerHTML = cssEditor.value;
Use the contentDocument property of the <iframe> DOM object to get the inner document.
You can then call normal methods on it like querySelector.

I'm having an issue at work with a rather picky client.
We use a rather strange script to deal with something that they require. We're an online assessment company and this script in general applies in our test player, rather than in our question editor, so we can't make change in the html, as you normally would with a text input box.
I know the maxlength attribute can be added through use of jQuery by using something along the lines of
$("input").prop("maxLength", 3)
However, I do not know how I would reference this in the HTML, as it would only be used in a couple of questions that use this script so making it standard for these questions by adding it to the JavaScript used is not an option.
The inputs that you need to apply this to would need to have ID's or Classes.
As you cannot edit the HTML this would only work, if those input's had ID's or Classes already.
If you want to apply it to an element with an Id you would do:
$("#IDGOESHERE").prop("maxLength", 3);
http://api.jquery.com/id-selector/
If it was with a class :
$(".CLASSNAMEHERE").prop("maxLength", 3);
http://api.jquery.com/class-selector/
You could get a little more fancy, by using EQ,
$("input").eq(5).prop("maxLength", 3);
Which would apply the max length to the 5th input on the page.

I am trying to change CSS elements depending on situations used in javascript.
an example I had tried was:
if ('image'=="clicked")
{blahblahblah}
'image' would be my div id or div tag in CSS.
I know in Jquery I can use $('#image').click, but I don't think it Jquery will be good for my situation.
Consider document.querySelector. It's powerful, accepting any valid CSS selector. You can even start from another element, such as myElement.querySelector, to only get children of that element that match the selector. Very useful!
Just be aware that IE7 and below do not support this function.
Assuming your id as image
document.getElementById('image').onclick = function() {
alert("button was clicked");
};

I want to change the div's style which is located in the parent of a parent. I am able to access them via DOM, but how can I change its CSS style using JQuery?
Selection code:
window.parent.parent.parent.document.getElementsByTagName('code').
I would love to only change a div that doesn't have display:none already set, but I really don't care if we change only one, or all of them.
You can always use the context parameter on $( selector [, context ] )
$("[name=code]",parent.parent.parent.document).css('display','none');
If you want to only change the one that are visible you can use the is function in JQuery in order to filter:
$("[name=code]",parent.parent.parent.document).is(':visible').css('display','none');
