Meteor and Bootstrap admin - javascript

I would like to use meteor with a bootstrap admin, i.e. a bundle including several bootstrap plugins, script and everything typically made as a kind of framework for developing a web application.
Usually those bundles comes with a lot of dependencies, such as external links for fonts, IE hacks as well as their own shipped file of bootstrap, jQuery and other stuff. If we were in a regular php-like framework it would have been fine.
But in order to make such a template be "native" on meteor, I thought to refactor it in such a way that local dependencies (script and css basically) are stored into folders and not loaded via a <script src="…"></script> tag (otherwise the local path would not be found) but I doubt it is really the best practice, this is why I do consider 3 options:
To use the project/public folder in order to store all the bundle's dependencies (as if it would have been in php for example)
I might refactor the bundle's code by removing any script or style tag aimed to import the js or css into the page and add the corresponding js file aside so that meteor will dynamically load it during at runtime
Like in option 2 but instead of using the bundle's jQuery source files I would install the official jQuery's package for meteor (if existing).
The first (1) option should be the quickest one to get something running but it would not be very meteor native. The advantage however would be to keep the code near to the original one and being able to upgrade once a new version of the bundle would be released.
The 2 other options would be much more elegant (especially the third one) but it would involve a lot of refactoring and induce the risk of introducing bugs I did not expected.
My preference for now is the first option one but I'm afraid of not seing the drawbacks of this approach. Does someone have any experience in importing manually the CSS and JS files the "old fashion way" in meteor ? What is the risk of such an approach compared to using the "place in folder to include" way of meteor ?

How to organize Vue-JS project [files and directory]: Non Javascript way?
Coming from a non-javascript background, I found Vue.js very intuitive and easy to use. My earlier experience in Javascript is with JQuery and vanilla javascript on the browser.
I created an application using Vue , Vue-components and vue router. Everything works fine.
My problem is, I have ended up writing a lot of code in a single index.html file of my project. This file contains over 10 templates that I have created and attached to different component in my app. I want to know that is there a non-javascript way to organize these templates in seperate files.
I see that there are options using webpack and browserify to modularize the project. But coming from non javascript background, I don't find them intuitive. I don't want to go node - npm way because that has its own learning curve and moreover it downloads a dozen of files and dependencies in my project which I don't understand. I am old school and more comfortable downloading the files and including them in the webpages.
So probably, you understand where I am going to. I need a solution where I could put my templates as separate files and read those files in the different components.
What I have tried :
Declaring the templates inside my components. But writing all that html inside the component is not that clean. It also, makes my JS file too huge. I am better in putting all data in the index.html instead.
Storing template as smaller chunk "homepage.html","about.html" and in my components, using $.get / $.load to read different components in ready function of the component. This works but I still have to fire an additional ajax call for each component which is not efficient.
Please refrain from suggesting the obvious node-npm [webpack and browserify] way. I know thats what is supported by Vue but this needs a learning curve and complete setup. Answer to this question would actually help other developers who hesitate going the node-npm way.
Please shout back if you need more clarifications to the question.
The options you've mentioned are your only real ones... the HTML of the template needs to be available when it's needed, so you either have to have it within your html file off the bat, or load it using AJAX or an in-browser loader like RequireJS (and this extension that allows it to load HTML https://github.com/requirejs/text).
In-file templates make sense for very small projects. As your project grows, you'll need to start using the tools that are built for this. NPM rocks and every JS package that you'll ever need can be included in your project in seconds.
I highly encourage you to try the Vue CLI
It does use node, npm, webpack and downloads dozens of files. Which you've you've explicitly asked for not to use, so let me clarify:
The Vue CLI takes care of the complexity and configures webpack for you.
You don't even have to know it's using webpack.
It's very developer friendly (it even has a built-in gui) and lowers the barrier to entry compared configuring a webpack config.
I hope you'll also find it "intuitive and easy to use".

Meteor css and javascript files loading best practice

TL,DR: How to load css and javascript files independent of Meteor assumptions about alphabetical order (which is far from how it works in practice.)
Stackoverflow tells me this question might be subjective but I hope not.
Meteor loads files based on alphabetical order (and other rules.)
So to force it to load the CSS and JS files in the order I wanted, I had to start the fiels with numbers that indicate the load order. If I have jquery.js and bootstrap.js, Meteor will load bootstrap.js before jquery.js. But bootstrap depends on jquery so jquery must be loaded first.
In order to solve this, the options are:
1. Put the files in the public directory and manually load them. But this didn't work as Meteor appears to be sending the files with text/html MIME type.
2. Create a Meteor package and specify the load order from there. I find this like hitting a fly with a hammer just for loading CSS and Javascript.
3. Put a number before every file. In the previous example, to load jquery before bootstrap, rename the fiels to 1.jquery.js and 2.bootstrap.js This works and is tedious but at least I get to load the files the way I want them to.
I am new to Meteor so I am wondering if there are recommended best practices concerning this. I was thinking of using AMD for javascript but that's limited to javascript.
Its an interesting question and this is probably one of the pitfalls of making a Meteor app.
You've mentioned all of the usable solutions such as creating an explicit package or renaming the files.
The best way I would think is to use the atmosphere packages. For example if you add bootstrap, jquery is a dependency of it so it will always load first. Most js libraries that involve load order are typically on atmosphere.
The other best way if there's no atmosphere package, though i'm not sure I would say is tedious is to put a number in front of the js file to indicate load order.
One thing is when you use the /public folder the files map to /, so you can load the js file yourself manually in the order you would want (in the root html file using /public. Meteor returns the text/html MIME type as its version of a 404 file not found error. This method is a bit troublesome though because the files are seperated in production and can cause trouble if one or the other dont load.

Can you use multiple .JS files when developing a complex Javascript application?

Coming from a C# background where every class is (best practices) stored in its own individual file, it makes development quite clean. I've never written anything complex in Javascript in the past, but I am starting to learn HTML 5 and I want to write a complex game using the HTML 5 canvas.
Putting all of my functions and code into a single .js file seems very messy. Is there a way to split it up, or a tool/IDE that lets you develop using separate files and compile them into a single one for deployment?
I guess I am looking for some best practice advice. Questions like this generally seem to get closed, so here are my specific questions to adhere to the SO FAQ that demands practical, answerable questions:
Does complex JS development usually involve all the code being in a single JS file? Eg. you're writing space invaders, do you just have spaceinvaders.js or do you have ships.js, logic.js etc.
Is it possible to split up your JS (whether using multiple script tags or pre-compiling to a single JS file) or to just put it all in a single file?
What's the industry standard? Does the HTML 5 spec make any recommendations?
There two possible ways.
Personally, I would use a build tool to simplify working with multiple files.
Using a build tool
Grunt
My favourite tool to keep up with complex js applications is grunt. With grunt you can develop in as many files as you want and use its plugins watch and concat to automatically concat them on save. You can do a lot more but this is the basic use case which may be helpful for you.
Grunt requires nodejs and takes some time to setup. But once you are ready with your Gruntfile setup it really speeds up your development process.
To make your project ready for production use you can also minify your scripts with some configuration and a single command.
A lot of the major javascript libraries are using grunt, easily recognizable based on their Gruntfile: jQuery, AngularJS, Twitter Bootstrap etc.
Grunt is also part of the development toolset yeoman.
Brunch
Brunch is another build tool which allows you to do similar things like grunt does.
Loading only the needed files
If you are developing a huge single page application and are concerned about the startup time of your application, one single file may not be the best solution. In this case you can use a javascript module loader.
Require.js
Therefor require.js is a goot fit. It allows you to only load the actual needed files on the current page. Though setting up require.js is a bit more work than setting up grunt.
Of course you can use more than one javascript file. How else would libraries like jQuery or Knockout function?
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that one of the things you want to do to keep your pages feeling snappy is to reduce the total number of http requests per page load. Adding a bunch of javascript files that are loaded separately causes an additonal request for each extra file. Therefore, you might want to experiment with a system for your build that stitches your javascript files together into a single item that you can use at deployment. There are a number of solutions out there that will do this for you in an automated way.
you could consider using requirejs - a very nice libray to split your javascript to modules.

Organize DRY template for JavaScript experiments?

I'm building a fairly large-scale JavaScript Backbone.js app with this folder organization:

The index.html file basically loads up all the Backbone.js Routers etc. and instantiates AMD modules etc.
Often however, I find the need to create small applications that basically share dependencies with the Big app.
Suppose I need to create 3 small experiments (separate pages) that all load the same usual suspects (underscore, backbone and a couple of util libraries and modules I've written).
They may though differ in: 1) how they extend these JavaScript libraries, 2) what gets instantiated and 3) markup and interaction.
How do I keep this experimentation DRY?
How do I set up this "extendable Template"?
In my opinion, this is where having a good build system comes in. The more complex your setup, the more useful it is to be able to set up configuration files that can keep your dependency management consolidated in one place. This becomes particularly important when:
You need to load the same sets of dependencies on multiple static pages, but your dependency lists change often during development.
You need to be able to easily create compressed versions of the dependencies for a production version. I find this is pretty important with Backbone, because the uncompressed versions are really big but quite useful during development.
I've generally used Apache Ant for this, but there are lot of build systems out there. What I've done in the past is:
Set up an index.tmpl.html file with the core HTML markup and placeholders for JS scripts, CSS files, and underscore templates.
Make a build.properties file that defines my dependency lists. You can group them in different ways under different property names, e.g. lib.scripts.all or util.scripts.all.
In my build process, create a new index.html file, based on index.tmpl.html, with <script> and other tags to load my dependencies. I have different targets to load the raw files or to compress everything into a production-ready single script file.
You can see an example of this setup in this Github project.
If I understand your requirements, you could set up a similar build file with a few tweaks to allow you to set a) the HTML template to use (your default index or another with experiment-specific markup), b) the output file, c) the specific sets of dependencies to load, d) additional dependencies to load, e.g. experiment-specific modules or initialization scripts. You could set these properties up in a specific target (if you think you'll reuse them a few times) or just specify them on the command line when you invoke ant, via the -D flag.
This would allow you a great deal of flexibility to re-use different portions of your code, and has the added benefit of making it easier to move an "experiment" into your core production code, just by including it permanently in your build process.

Are there ways to improve javascript (Dojo) loading?

I'm starting to use the Dojo toolkit and it has rich features like Dijits and themes which are useful but take forever to load.
I've got a good internet connection but those with slower connections would experience rather slow page loads.
This is also a question about heavy vs light frameworks. If you make heavy use of widgets, what are some techniques to keep page load times down?
Dojo has a build system that will drastically improve load times. Take a look at one of the dojo books or the online docs & look at layered builds. In order to do a build, you need to have the "source" (or "full") version of dojo, which has the build tool included -- you can tell if you have this by the presence of the 'util' directory (which is at the same level as dojo, dijit, dojox). If you don't have the full version, go back to the dojo site & delve down into the download area -- it's not completely obvious perhaps.
Anyway, if you have the right version, you basically just need to make a "build profile" file (or files ... aka a layered build), which is essentially your list of dojo.requires that you would normally have in your html. The build system will jam all the javascript code for all the dijits, dojox stuff, etc. together into a "layered build" (a file) and it will run shrinksafe on it, which sort of minifies the code (removes whitespace, shortens names, etc). It will also do some of this to the css files. Aside from making things much smaller, you get just a single file for all the js code (or a few files if you do more than one layer, but most of the time a single layer suffices).
This will improve your load times at least ten-fold, if not more. It might take you a bit of reading to get down the format of the profiles and the build command itself, but it's not too hard really. Once you create a build file, name it something obvious like "mystuff" and then you can dojo.require the "mystuff" file (which will be in the new build directory that is created when you build, then underneath that & hanging out with the dojo.js file in the dojo directory). Requiring in your built file will satisfy all the dojo.require's you normally do (assuming you have them all listed in the profile to build) and things will load very fast.

It reads harder than it really is ... use the layer.profile file in the profiles directory as a starting point. Just put a couple of things & then do a build & see if you get the release directory created (which should be at the same level as dojo, dijit, etc.) and it will have the entire dojo system in it (all minified) as well as your built (layered) stuff. Much faster.

It's not that big (28k gzipped). Nevertheless you can use Google's hosted version of Dojo. Many of your users will already have it cached.

Slight correction -- you don't dojo.require that file, you reference it in an ordinary script tag.

For the directory layout I put the built file "mystuff.js" into the same directory as my package. So at the same level as dojo, dojox, and dijit, I would have a directory named "mystuff", and within that I have MyClass1.js and MyClass2.js. Then a fragment from the profile.js file for the build looks like:

I know this is an old thread. But I'm posting this answer for the benefit of other users like me who may read this.
If you are serving from apache there are other factors too. These settings can make a huge difference - MaxClients and MaxRequestsPerChild. You will need to tweak them based on the resources available to your server/machine serving the files.
Changing this worked really well for me.
Using the google CDN is also a good option although it may not be practical in some situations.
Custom build also has an effect as pointed out in other answers.
