$(this) referring to window, not div that called function - javascript

I have a function that dynamically inserts a close button into divs as they are added to the page.
//Insert Close ALERT WINDOW button
function addCloseAlertButton(){
if ($(".alert").find('.closeAlerts').length < 1){
$(".alert").append('<div class="closeAlerts" onclick="closeAlert()">Dismiss</div>');

And the function called by onclick:
//Close Alert Function

$(this).parent().remove();
};
But clicking on the div doesn't remove the alert div as I expected. When I console.log($(this)) in the function, I found that $(this) was referring to the entire window and $(this).parent came up empty, so that is why the function isn't working.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can make it so $(this) refers to the calling div, not the entire window?

Don't use inline JS to do that. Instead use event delegation:
$(document).on('click', '.closeAlerts', function(){
$(this).parent().remove();
});

Replace your
onclick="closeAlert()"
with this:
onclick="closeAlert.call(this)"
and it should work.

Because you're using inline event handlers. If you want to keep the handler function separate, this would be one possibility:
function addCloseAlertButton() {
if ($(".alert").find('.closeAlerts').length < 1) {
$('<div class="closeAlerts">Dismiss</div>')
.appendTo('.alert')
.click(closeAlert);
}
};
function closeAlert() {
$(this).parent().remove();
};

You can set this as parameter in function
<div class="closeAlerts" onclick="closeAlert(this)">Dismiss</div>
And this will be your div object.
But I'm not reccomend you to use embedded javascript code in html elements. Try to separate js code from html.

Dynamically created div behavior on button click

I went through many post from SO but not able to relate with my scenario.
I have this code on button click. by which User can create as many div on runtime as he wants to on UI.

Now the problem is that I have to create multiple dynamic div. and each div will have button to close itself. When I call this function it will close all created div's instead of the one which button is clicked.
I am not able to find the proper div by which request for close come. I am new to DOM and JQuery. not able to relate the things
First of all, if you're using multiple divs you shouldn't give the close button an ID, but a class instead (let's say, .close)
Next you can use event delegation to find the correct element:
$(document).on('click', '.ara-dynamic-div .close', function( event ) {
$(this).closest('.ara-dynamic-div').fadeOut();
} )
The delegator handles all click events in any .ara-dynamic-div .close button, catching them all and allowing you to use $(this).closest(...) to get to the parent container.
Edit: Corrected a mistake
You can use jQuery's .closest() function.

What the code does is that it remove all other .ara-dynamic-div except the one for which the button was clicked.

Passing specific value to modal from dynamic buttons

I have a few different modals on my page that need data passed into them. I solved that problem with this other question, which has me using jQuery now and was really helpful. This is what I have now:
$(document).on("click", ".edit", function () {
$(".modal-body #value").val($('.edit').data('id'));
});
My problem is that since my page has dynamically created buttons (from a foreach based on the model), no matter which button I click, this gets the value from the first button. How do I instead get the value from the button that was clicked.
I thought about giving them all separate ids, but I don't want to make a function for each id. I read that there is a data property to this .on method, but I can't find a good example of how to use it and if it would work in my case.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful. Thank you!

You can reference the button being clicked by using the this keyword. Try the following:
$(document).on("click", ".edit", function () {
$(".modal-body #value").val($(this).data('id'));

Can I determine what was clicked using JavaScript?

Once again I've inherited someone else's system which is a bit of a mess. I'm currently working with an old ASP.NET (VB) webforms app that spits JavaScript onto the client via the server - not nice! I'm also limited on what I can edit in regards to the application.
I have a scenario where I have a function that does a simple exercise but would also need to know what item was clicked to executed the function, as the function can be executed from a number of places within the system...
Say I had a function like so...

how could I get the ID (for example) of the HTML element that was clicked to execute this?
Something like:
function updateMyDiv() {
alert(htmlelement.id) // need to raise the ID of what was clicked,

$('#div2').hide();
$('#div13').show();
}
I can expand on this if neccessary, do I need to pass this as an arguement?
The this keyword references the element that fired the event. Either:
<element onClick="doSomething(this);">
or
element.onclick = function() {
alert(this.id);
}
Bind your click events with jQuery and then reference $(this)
$('.myDivClass').live('click', function () {
updateMyDiv(this);
});
var updateMyDiv = function (that) {
alert(that.id);
// save the world

You don't need to pass "this", it is assigned automatically. You can do something like this:
$('div').click(function(){
alert($(this).attr('id'));
})
Attach the function as the elements event handler is one way,
$(htmlelement).click(updateMyDiv);
If you are working with an already generated event, you can call getElementByPoint and pass in the events x,y coords to get the element the mouse was hovering over.
$('.something').click(function(){
alert($(this).attr('id'));
});
You would need to pass it the event.target variable.
$("element").click(function(event) {
updateMyDiv($(event.target));
});
function updateMyDiv(target) {
alert(target.prop("id"));
}
Where is your .click event handler? Wherever it is, the variable this inside of it will be the element clicked upon.
If you have an onclick attribute firing your function, change it to
<tag attribute="value" onclick="updateMyDiv(this)">
and change the JavaScript to
function updateMyDiv(obj) {
alert(obj.getAttribute('id')) // need to raise the ID of what was clicked,
$('#div1').hide();
$('#div2').hide();
$('#div13').show();

use the .attr('id') method and specify the id which will return what you need.

jQuery Issue: functions won't work on newly created HTML element

I have two functions: one that creates a new <textarea> when a button is clicked, and a second function that performs an action when the <textarea> is clicked (or blurred, changed, etc.) That second function selects elements based on a class name. It seems that the second function only works on those matching elements that existed when the page was loaded, but it will not activate on any newly created <textarea> elements. Can anyone figure out why and how to fix this? You'll find the code below. Thanks. --Jake

The textarea you create isn't around at the time jQuery assigns the action to elements tagged with the .test class. You'll need the live() function to make this work as desired.
$('.test').live('blur', function () {
alert('just a test')
});
Now any element tagged with .test will automatically bind the specified function on blur no matter when it's created.
You can bind it directly:
$('#add').click(function() {
$(this).before("<textarea class='test'></textarea>").prev().blur(function () {
alert('just a test');
});
});
Or place use jQuery's .delegate() method to place a handler on the parent of #add.
$('#add').click(function() {
$(this).before("<textarea class='test'></textarea>")
}).parent().delegate('.test','blur',function() {
alert('just a test');
});
This is a more efficient approach than using .live().

Changing the onclick event delegate of an HTML button?

How do you change the JavaScript that will execute when a form button is clicked?
I've tried changing its onClicked and its onclicked child attributes like so:
$('mybutton').onClick = 'doSomething';
and
$('mybutton').attributes["onclick"] = 'doSomething()';
Neither seem to work. My other options are:
To have two buttons and hide one and show the other.
To have it directed to a function that evals a string and change the string to the function I want to execute.
Neither seem very elegant.
I'm using Prototype as a js library so it that has any useful tools I can use them.
If the original onclick event was set through HTML attributes, you can use the following to overwrite it:
$("#myButtonId").setAttribute("onclick", "myFunction();");
For Prototype, I believe that it would be something like this:
$("mybutton").observe('click', function() {
// do something here
});
EDIT: Or, as it says in the documentation, you could simply specify the function you want to call on click:
$('mybutton').observe('click', respondToClick);
function respondToClick(event) {
// do something here
}
But this is all, again, Prototype-specific.
Using the Prototype framework you can do:
Event.observe("mybutton", "click", clickHandler);
or:
Event.observe("mybutton", "click", function() {
alert("Button clicked!");
});
or:
$("mybutton").observe("click", clickHandler);
or:
$("mybutton").observe("click", function() {
alert("Button clicked!");

The general way to set an onclick handler in javascript is to set onclick to a function, by passing it the name of a function directly, not in a string. So if myButton is set to a DOM Element, you would write:
myButton.onclick = doSomething;
So when you click the 'mybutton' button, the doSomething function will be called as doSomething(). For anonymous functions, you can write:
myButton.onclick = function() {
alert("myButton was clicked!");
};
In JQuery it's
$("#myButtonId").click(myFunction);
function myFunction(){
alert("Clicked");
}
Or if you want to put the function inline:
$("#myButtonId").click(function(){
alert("Clicked");
});
If you are using JQuery firstly make sure you use the relevant selector prefix (IE: If your using the Id of the element put a # in front of it). Secondly it's the click method to assign a callback to the click event.
Last I used Prototype, it was something like this:
Event.observe('mybutton', 'click', doSomething);
By the way, your examples might've even worked if you didn't quote the function names.
EDIT: Yes, Element.observe(element, eventName, handler) and someElement.observe(eventName, handler) also work. And don't quote the handler name - you want to pass the function not a string!
I found a solution for your issue with prototype under firefox:
$("#myButtonId").writeAttribute('onclick', ''); // first remove the attribute
$("#myButtonId").observe('click', function () { ... }); // then add the event
