Access a javascript variable in another js file in backbone.js - javascript

I do have a HomeRoute.js file in application which has BackBone.Model.extend implementation . I'm calling an ajax in the render method of this HomeRoute.js which provides me the session json. Now from this json i want to extract an variable sessionId and i want to use this sessionId variable in another HeaderView.js file.
I researched a lot on this but couldn't find any way to pass this variable to the HeaderView.js

There are quite a few ways of doing this.
I'd just create a variable outside of HomeRoute (in the same file) called sessionId (right now you only have that variable in the showHtml function, within the HomeRoute object; move it much higher in the scope). Any variable at that very top scope can be seen by other .js files included after this one, including your HeaderView.js file.
For example:

Then in the other file (HeaderView.js, included -after- HomeRoute.js), you can simply access that variable:

...assuming the post function has already returned, of course. (And also assuming that you can change a variable outside the scope of an object in JS, which I'm not positive about. If not, you're going to have to return the value from the instantiated HomeRoute object and assign it to sessionId.)

If sessionId is a critical part of HomeRoute, you can make it as part of the model and initialize it under the initializer:

jQuery object, inconsistent global variables and AJAX call

I'm looking to get what I thought would be a simple script to run an AJAX call and keep various values stored to an object, but I cannot get the globals to remain consistent the way I would expect.
I've gone around in circles trying what I think is everything. As soon as I put the AJAX call in I can't get it to play nicely with the global variables. The process value is always false that way and the content never loads in.

Despite wrapping everything as a class/object, the jQuery $.ajax call is still an asynchronous operation. basically "You have ordered a pizza, then try to eat it before it arrives".
i.e. this orders it:
loadcontent.request('/test.html');
and this tries to eat it immediately:
if(loadcontent.returnprocess()){
The call to setoutput (i.e. the "Pizza delivery") happens long after these operations complete.
You need to add event handler properties to your class, or use deferreds+promises to wait for the data to arrive.
To use promises, just return the $.ajax result from request:

Fetch data on different server with backbone.js

I can't see what the problem with this is.
I'm trying to fetch data on a different server, the url within the collection is correct but returns a 404 error. When trying to fetch the data the error function is triggered and no data is returned. The php script that returns the data works and gives me the output as expected. Can anyone see what's wrong with my code?

You can make the requests using JSONP (read about here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JSONP).
To achive it using Backbone, simply do this:

You backend must ready to do this. The server will receive a callback name generated by jQuery, passed on the query string. So the server must respond:
name_of_callback_fuction_generated({ YOUR DATA HERE });

This is a cross domain request - no can do. Will need to use a local script and use curl to access the one on the other domain.

JavaScript OOP - Not able to set the public value from Ajax call inside a Class structure

i faced issue while writing a class specially for handling Ajax calls & its response.
Purpose of below code : Based on user records exist in database, i need to set the flag "isPersonalDivRequiredFlag" for further use.

The whole piece of code will work fine if i remove Ajax call function & made it a normal prototype method. So i know the cause but not able to find any solution :(

I found some techniques people suggested while Google it over internet.

Accessing outer scope

I'm working on creating a Users collection with the ability to then grab single users inside. This will be used to match from another system, so my desire is to load the users once, and then be able to fine/match later. However, I'm having a problem accessing the outer users collection from an inner method.

The getPosition method is the issue (which might be obvious) as allUsers is always undefined. What I have here is yet another attempt, I've tried a few ways. I think the problem is how the Users.getUsers is being called to start with, but I'm also unsure if I'm using the outer and inner vars is correct.
Though the others are correct in that this won't work as you have it typed out, I see the use case is a jasmine test case. So, there is a way to make your test succeed. And by doing something like the following you remove the need to actually be running any kind of server to do your test.

This will make the ajax call return whatever it is that you want it to return, which also allows you to mock out tests for failures, unexpected data, etc. You can set 'dataThatYouWouldExpectFromServer' to anything you want at any time.. which can help with cases where you want to test out a few different results but don't want a JSON file for each result.
Sorta-edit - this would fix the test case, but probably not the code. My recommendation is that any time you rely on an ajax call return, make sure the method you are calling has a 'callback' argument. For example:

You can nest them, or you can (preferably) create the callbacks and then use them as arguments for eachother.

your approach to fill the data in allUsers is flawed
the ajax call in jquery is async so every call to users.getAllUsers would be returned with nothing and when later the success function of the jquery ajax is called then allUsers would get filled
this.getUsers() won't work. Its returning of allUsers is independent from the ajax request that fetches the data, because, well, the ajax is asynchronous. Same with getRate().
You'll have to use a callback approach, where you call getUsers() with a callback reference, and when the ajax request completes, it passes the data to the callback function.
Something like:

How to wait to render view in backbone.js until fetch is complete?

I'm trying to understand how a portion of backbone.js works. I have to fetch a collection of models once the app begins. I need to wait until fetch is complete to render each view.
I'm not 100% sure the best approach to take in this instance.

The method I use is the jQuery complete callback like this:

This was recommended in a Backbone bug report. Although the bug report recommends using complete, that callback method has since been deprecated in favor of done.
You can also do this with jquery 1.5+

You can send your own options.success to the collections fetch method which runs only when the fetch is complete

Note the second to last line. If you've passed in a function in the options object as the success key it will call it after the collection has been parsed into models and added to the collection.
So, if you do:

(assuming the initialize method is binding this.do_something to this...), it will call that method AFTER the whole shebang, allowing you trigger actions to occur immediately following fetch/parse/attach
Another useful way might be to bootstrap in the data directly on page load. This if from the
FAQ:
Loading Bootstrapped Models
When your app first loads, it's common to have a set of initial models that you know you're going to need, in order to render the page. Instead of firing an extra AJAX request to fetch them, a nicer pattern is to have their data already bootstrapped into the page. You can then use reset to populate your collections with the initial data. At DocumentCloud, in the ERB template for the workspace, we do something along these lines:

Another option is to add the following inside of your collections initialize method:

This will fire off the render method whenever the fetch is complete and/or the collection is updated programmatically.
