Javascript/jQuery compare input value to array - javascript

I'm relatively new to javascript and jquery. Right now I have a list of words in a txt file. I store this list in an array, and I want to compare the contents of that array to some user input. If there's a match, that specific word should be displayed.
I also use Jasny Bootstrap to perform some typeahead functions to predict which words the user would like to search for.
In the current stage, my function finds matches on the first input character. When using more characters the function returns that no match has been found. Why is that?
Here's my HTML:
<div class="container">
<div class="appwrapper">
<div class="content">
<h3>OpenTaal Woordenboek</h3>
<p>Voer uw zoekopdracht in:<p>
<p><input name="searchinput" id="searchinput" data-provide="typeahead" type="text" placeholder="Zoeken...">
<p class="dict"></p>
</div>
</div>
</div> <!-- /container -->
And here's the jQuery:
<script src="bootstrap/js/jquery.js"></script>
<script src="bootstrap/js/bootstrap-typeahead.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
var data;
var myArray = [];
var txtFile = new XMLHttpRequest();
txtFile.open("GET", "OpenTaal-210G-basis-gekeurd.txt", true);
txtFile.onreadystatechange = function() {
if (txtFile.readyState === 4) { // Makes sure the document is ready to parse.
if (txtFile.status === 200) { // Makes sure it's found the file.
allText = txtFile.responseText;
data = txtFile.responseText.split("\n"); // Will separate each line into an array
myArray = [data];
} //"\r\n"
}
}
//console.write(data);
searchinput.onkeypress = function() {
//alert("The function is working!");
var formInput = document.getElementById("searchinput").value;
if (myArray == formInput) {
alert("There's a match!");
$('.dict').append('<div class="result">' + myArray + '</div>')
} else {
alert("No match has been found..");
}
};

You didn't use jquery, just native javascript.
After your script reading file, just do:
$(searchinput).on("keypress", function() {
if ($.inArray(formInput,myArray) > -1) {
alert("There's a match!");
}
});
UPDATE
$(searchinput).on("blur", function() {
if ($.inArray(formInput,myArray) > -1) {
alert("There's a match!");
}
});

You need to search the entire array, not just compare it to the value:
if ($.inArray(formInput,myArray)>=0) { // returns -1 if no match
alert("There's a match!");
http://api.jquery.com/jQuery.inArray/

Loop through the array and match the input value with array elements like :
for(var i in myArray) {
var arrayElement = myArray[i];
if (arrayElement == formInput) {
//Do your stuff
}
}

How do I change this Contact Form's Javascript so that IF a key is something else, perform different action?

I have a Contact Form that utilizes Google Scripts. It successfully sends the email and formats it decently to my inbox, but there are 2 problems:
-I need it so that IF var key is equal to 'Action', then do not display it in the email it sends. Because right now, "Action send_message" is getting included in the email and I don't like that.
For this, I have unsuccessfully tried things like:
for (var idx in order) {
var key = order[idx];
//Skip this entry into the email output if it is the Action
if( key === 'Action') {
continue
}
It seems to not react to this code at all.
-I also need it so that if a city is selected, e.g. Alachua, that the email says 'Alachua' instead of 'Florida_Alachua'. But I can't add a NAME to an option since apparently options don't have that property. I also can't do the quick fix of changing the VALUE of the <option> to resolve this step, because of other code I have that conflicts with this route.

finally, this is the extra code that would break if I simply tried changing the value of option to, e.g., 'Alachua' instead of 'Flordia_Alachua'. https://jsfiddle.net/hmatt843/504dgmqy/19/
Thanks for any and all help.
Try console.log(key) before if( key === 'Action'). I think you'll find that key never equals 'Action', exactly. Looks like you'll need if( key === 'action'), instead.
If you wish to remove part of string value, try the replace method: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/String/replace
It also looks like you're trying to work with elements[k].name when you mean to be working with elements[k].value.
I believe your code should look something like...
function(k) {
if(elements[k].value !== undefined) {
return elements[k].value.replace('Florida_', '');
// special case for Edge's html collection
} else if(elements[k].length > 0){
return elements[k].item(0).value.replace('Florida_', '');
}
}
... or something to that effect.
In the future, you may want to make it easier for folks trying to help you by posting only the portions of code your having trouble with, and breaking your questions into different posts. A lot to sift through up there.
Hope this helped.
The split() method splits a String object into an array of strings by separating the string into substrings, using a specified separator string to determine where to make each split.
Var splitValue = elements[k].item(0).value.split("");
splitValue[1] will give you a string of characters after the delimeter () in this case.

How to show error message if entered value matches any one of the text?

I am working on form input field and trying to show error message when user enters any of the following text
JS01, PR03, HY79, FG36, VF42, HF23
Basically need to show error message only if user entered the above mentioned text.
<input type="text" name="prodcode" class="form-control"/>
Should we use regex to achieve this? or Any jquery/javascipt can do this?
Can anyone provide me an example?
use Jquery.inArray method to find out if the word user entered is in your defined array,
var myarray = ["JS01", "PR03","HY79","FG36", "VF42","HF23"];
var inputWord = $("input[name='prodcode']").val();
if(jQuery.inArray(inputWord , myarray) !== -1){ //if the word exits
//do what you want here
}
You can use jquery indexof method.For ex:-
a = [JS01, PR03, HY79, FG36, VF42, HF23]
var value = $('input[name="prodcode"]').val();
var indexval = a.indexOf("value" ); // this will return -1 if not found else return index
if (indexval>=0){
// code for error
}
Please Check this. The solution has been done on keydown
$(function(){
var arr = ['JS01', 'PR03', 'HY79', 'FG36', 'VF42', 'HF23'];
$('.form-control').keydown(function(){
var inputval = $('.form-control').val();
var k = $.inArray(inputval,arr);
if(k != -1){
alert('error');
}
});
});
Try with this:
var err = [ 'JS01', 'PR03', 'HY79', 'FG36', 'VF42', 'HF23' ];
$('#myInput').keyup(function (e){
console.log("ERR", err.indexOf(this.value))
if (err.indexOf(this.value) !== -1) {
$('.error').css({display: 'block'})
} else {
$('.error').css({display: 'none'})
}
})
.error{
color: red;
display:none;
}
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<input id="myInput" type="text" name="prodcode" class="form-control"/>
<div class="error">Error</div>
You can use the includes method ( MDN includes ) and check against an array which is prefilled with invalid strings.
var valuesToCheckFor = ["JS01", "PR03","HY79","FG36", "VF42","HF23"];
if( valuesToCheckFor.includes($('input[name="prodcode"]').val()) ) {
// Do what you want.
}
P.S. you will have to add this code inside the submit handler.

Comparing two text box which contains email_Id

Can someone help me out with validation of two text-box with same email Id.
I was able to pop an alert if both the text-box contain the same email Id via JavaScript(my requirement was both text-box cant have same email) but now I m facing a problem if second text box contain more then one email_Id separated my comma(,) the validation doesn't work.
I don't want email that is present in first text box repeat into second text-box.
My code:
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
function validated() {
if (document.getElementById("<%=txtCountry.ClientID %>").value = document.getElementById("<%=txtnewViewer.ClientID %>").value) {
alert("Presenter cant be attende");
return false;
}Else{
return true;
}
}
</script>
check this code out
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
function validated()
{
if (document.getElementById("<%=textbox1.id %>").value == document.getElementById("<%=textbox2.id %>").value)
{
alert("text-box cant have same email");
return false;
}
else
{
alert("Valid");
return true;
}
}
</script>
Can you try this.
var f_email = document.getElementById("f_email").value;
var s_email= document.getElementById("s_email").value;
if(f_email === s_email) {
// do something when email ids are same.
alert("email ids are same");
}
else {
// do something when email ids are same.
alert("email ids are not same");
}
First, you if statement contains an = who always return true and modify your variable (in place of ==).
function validated() {
var clientId = document.getElementById("<%=txtCountry.ClientID %>").value,
viewerId = document.getElementById("<%=txtnewViewer.ClientID %>").value;
if (clientId == viewerId) {
alert("Presenter cant be attende");
return false;
}
return true;
}
After that you can use : Array.indexOf():
var clients = clientId.split(","), viewers = viewerId.split(",");
// Here we have two arrays with all datas
for(var i = 0; i < clients.length; i++){
var k = viewers.indexOf(clients[i]);
if(k !== -1) {
alert(clients[i], "=", viewers[k]);
}
}

Check an array of values with jQuery

Hi I'm trying to loop and check an array with specific values. If the value already exists that the user want to use in the input a message will be displayed, if the username is a correct one and new it will be uploaded to my firebase! It works for the first element in the array but if i set .length in the loop it takes all but sends the false value anyway?
<form id="">
<label>Your username: </label><input type="text" id="userName">
</form>
<script src="text/javascript">
var invalidUser=['value1','value2','value3','value4'];
var myDataRef = new Firebase('https://leastflyingwasps.firebaseio.com/');
$('#userName').keypress(function (e) {
if (e.keyCode == 13) {
var name = $('#userName').val();
for (var i = 0;i<invalidUser;i++) {
}
if (invalidUser[i] === name) {
alert('Not a valid username')
}
else {
myDataRef.push({name: name});
}
}
});
</script>
The first issue is because your check is actually happening outside of the for loop. Secondly, you could simplify this by using $.inArray():
var invalidUser = ['value1', 'value2', 'value3', 'value4'];
$('#userName').keypress(function (e) {
if (e.keyCode == 13) {
var name = $('#userName').val();
if ($.inArray(name, invalidUser) != -1) {
alert('Not a valid username')
}
else {
var myDataRef = new Firebase('https://leastflyingwasps.firebaseio.com/');
myDataRef.push({ name: name });
}
}
});

How do I compare the value of an element returned by getElementsByName to a string?

I'm making a quiz with a text input. This is what I have so far:
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function check() {
var s1 = document.getElementsByName('s1');
if(s1 == 'ō') {
document.getElementById("as1").innerHTML = 'Correct';
} else {
document.getElementById("as1").innerHTML = 'Incorrect';
}
var s2 = document.getElementsByName('s2');
if(s2 == 's') {
document.getElementById("as2").innerHTML = 'Correct';
} else {
document.getElementById("as2").innerHTML = 'Incorrect';
}
//(...etc...)
var p3 = document.getElementsByName('p3');
if(p3 == 'nt') {
document.getElementById("ap3").innerHTML = 'Correct';
} else {
document.getElementById("ap3").innerHTML = 'Incorrect';
}
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
1st sing<input type="text" name="s1"> <div id="as1"><br>
2nd sing<input type="text" name="s2"> <div id="as2"><br>
<!-- ...etc... -->
3rd pl<input type="text" name="p3"> <div id="ap3"><br>
<button onclick='check()'>Check Answers</button>
</body>
</html>
Every time I check answers it always says Incorrect and only shows the first question. I also need a way to clear the text fields after I check the answers. One of the answers has a macro. Thanks in advance.
The method getElementsByName returns a NodeList, you can't really compare that against a string. If you have only one element with such name, you need to grab the first element from that list using such code instead:
var s1 = document.getElementsByName('s1')[0].value;
To make it more flexible and elegant plus avoid error when you have typo in a name, first add such function:
function SetStatus(sName, sCorrect, sPlaceholder) {
var elements = document.getElementsByName(sName);
if (elements.length == 1) {
var placeholder = document.getElementById(sPlaceholder);
if (placeholder) {
var value = elements[0].value;
placeholder.innerHTML = (value === sCorrect) ? "Correct" : "Incorrect";
} else {
//uncomment below line to show debug info
//alert("placeholder " + sPlaceholder+ " does not exist");
}
} else {
//uncomment below line to show debug info
//alert("element named " + sName + " does not exist or exists more than once");
}
}
Then your code will become:
SetStatus('s1', 'ō', 'as1');
SetStatus('s2', 's', 'as2');
//...
document.getElementsByName('s1') is an array you should use document.getElementsByName('s1')[0] to get certain element(first in this case)
