I would like to be able to prevent a CSS file from applying to the inside of a DIV tag.
The CSS file is included in the <head> section of a HTML document. I cannot remove the file or change it. All I have control of is the inside of that DIV tag. The HTML document is generated with MediaWiki, so I'm not allowed to use iFrames. I cannot host my content anywhere else, but I can take external resources such as CSS and javascript, upload them, and include them in the inside of my DIV.
Currently, I have Jquery, and I can include all sorts of external libraries.
Using jQuery to find the <link rel="stylesheet" href=...> and then .remove()ing it does work, but that messes up the rest of the page, which I am prevented from doing by a LOT of red tape.
Is there a way to "javascriptically" do something to the stylesheet such that it applies only to anything that's not inside my DIV? Maybe using the :not() selector?
I have no idea, and I have never touched the not selector before. Please help. Thank you.
You can't make prevent CSS from applying to a part of the document, even if you could change it (which is doable with Javascript as long as you don't care about users with no Javascript). You have two options basically:
Override the CSS. Probably the least painful way is to take some CSS reset stylesheet and prefix every rule so that #1 it only applies to your div, #2 it has high enough specificity to override all MediaWiki rules. You can then apply your own styles on top of that.
Make the div not part of the document. You could create an iframe in Javascript and move the contents of the DIV there. (Shadow DOM would be a nicer approach but there is not much browser support yet.)
I am using a python library to convert HTML page into PDF.
It does it correctly, except it only handles inline styling. It does not reflect the styling applied to DOM elements using external style sheets.
So, as a solution I am thinking of adding those CSS styling from all the external CSS stylesheets into the head tag of the html file and then send it to get converted into pdf.
But, I am not sure how? Can anyone give me any ideas or atleast suggestion on how to go around fixing that? Or, if they know a better solution.

Is the python running outside or client-side? You can examine the solution here # http://www.xportability.com/XEPOnline/FOTestSuite.html. While this does a lot more, you can reach through that page to the included Javascript. Look for flattenstyle.js for inspiration.
Because our handling is different, we actually copy a selected div element to another hidden div and "flatten" the style by extracting styles we want. What you could do is run such a javascript on page load and save out the div and not destroy it, then you have most all the print styling in the HTML.
I need to have the old "resize fonts" option at the top of the site I'm building - one link that is the default size, one that makes fonts a size bigger, and one that makes them two sizes bigger. it only needs to affect some nav and body copy, so I'd like to simply make 2 extra stylesheets to just style those elements, and upon clicking one of the links, load an additional stylesheet into the header. when you click the "default" link, it will go back to the original size (with no additional stylesheets loaded).
Is there a way to do this in javascript? This is a Wordpress site.
Alternately, I could use js to add a tag to the body and target the elements that way.

You should just change the class of the elements. That will change their css to whatever is specified by that class in the stylesheet. Your first option is more complicated than it needs to be. If you use JQuery you can literally make this one line of code.

I would do this as an include statement in in a php tag. Then just have one php file you include on the top of each page.

I guess that it is not possible to add it dynamically to head tag. Of course, you can do that, but this stylesheet won't be loaded. Maybe you should try to get it via ajax and append to a special script tag in your site. If user will choose another option, then you will load another content, clear this script tag and append new content there.
I have a simple .html page which uses Javascript to display some popups. Now If the Javascript is disabled I want to show some text with anchor links so if javascript is enabled I should be able to show the popups but if Javascript is disabled i want to display some text and popups shouldnt be displayed. (It is considered good form to add the click event to the link in the head part of the document, or in a separate script file, but this will do fine as well.)
This way, if JavaScript is turned off, the user will be taken to the HTML document; otherwise, your JavaScript actions will fire.

I strongly suggest you do not show automatic pop-ups using JavaScript or any other implementation, though.
I found some good cons here:
The noscript element only detects whether the browser has JavaScript enabled or not. If JavaScript is disabled in the Firewall rather than in the browser then the JavaScript will not run and the content of the noscript element will not be displayed.
Many scripts are dependent on a specific feature or features of the language being supported in order for them to be able to run (for example document.getElementById). Where the required features are not supported the JavaScript is unable to run but since JavaScript itself is supported the noscript content will not be displayed.
The most useful place to use the noscript element is in the head of the page where it would be able to selectively determine what stylesheet and meta elements get applied to the page as the page is loading rather than having to wait until the page is loaded. Unfortunately the noscript element is only valid within the body of the page and so cannot be used in the head.
The noscript element is a block level element and therefore can only be used to display entire blocks of content when JavaScript is disabled. It cannot be used inline.
Ideally, web pages should use HTML for the content, CSS for the appearance, and JavaScript for the behavior. Using the noscript element is applying a behavior from within the HTML rather than applying it from JavaScript.

I very much agree on last point. Is there a way to make and add an external <noscript> file? Should we place <noscript> in the <head>?
It's better to have the default be non-javascript, and then let a javascript code overwrite with a javascript enabled page. Doesn't have to be much. Can just be a display:none; block, which is then set to display:block; by javascript, and vice versa for the non-js page.
After pondering for many days and changing my code back and forth, I think I have clearer picture now and would like to share my two cents worth on the subject before I forget.

In summary
Use <noscript> element if rendering of the HTML content depends on third-party scripts or if the required script is inline. Else, use <div> element and make sure that the required script contains:

Although Tor Valamo has an elegant answer to this problem, there is an issue which may cause you to opt out of using this technique.
The problem is (usually) IE. It has the tendency to load and execute the JS a bit slower than other browsers causing it to sometimes flash the "Please Enable Your Javascript" div for a split second before it then loads the JS and hides the div.
It is annoying and to get around this you can implement the "classic". <noscript> redirect approach.

This is the most solid technique that I've come across with regards to this little nasty.
One useful application for noscript that I've seen is for a progressively-enhanced async loading of heavy content (especially "below the fold"). Big images, iframes, etc. can be wrapped in noscript in the HTML source, and then the unwrapped elements can be appended to the page using JavaScript after the DOM is ready. This unblocks the page and can make for a much quicker initial loading experience, especially if your interface relies on JS/JQ interactions applied after the document is ready (2 seconds vs. 6 seconds for a portfolio page I consulted on).
These days it seems almost every browser runs Javascript, but you can never know who is going to be accessing your site. These days even screen readers and web crawlers use Javascript, and sometimes make AJAX requests if they have to.
That said, if you're going to fall back to no-Javascript, there is a much better way than a <noscript> tag. Simply do this in the HEAD of your document:

With this technique, you can easily refer to the Q_js class in your CSS to hide things. With the <noscript> tag, the best you can hope for is to include an additional CSS file to override previous CSS. This becomes important when some elements with static content are supposed to be hidden right away (not flicker) until Javascript can make them more dynamic.
In short, the technique I suggested addresses all your cons 1-5, and I believe it's strictly better than using <noscript>.

Like all things, use the right tool for the job.
If you are using Google Maps API, you have a static image via tag and that gets replaced with dynamic JS map. Google have recently started charging for everything thus with the above example it's going to cost you twice, once for static and once for dynamic. The static map is only relevant if JS is disabled. Therefore to save double paying it seems to me the best solution is to wrap the tag for the static map in a tag.
