Sorry, but I don't believe it's quite that simple. Browsers restrict access to local drives (and to server drives) for security reasons.

Some browsers have a security feature that prevents JavaScript from knowing your file's local full path. It makes sense - as a client, you don't want the server to know your local machine's filesystem. It would be nice if all browsers did this.

I use the object FileReader on the input onchange event for your input file type! This example uses the readAsDataURL function and for that reason you should have an tag. The FileReader object also has readAsBinaryString to get the binary data, which can later be used to create the same file on your server

I am happy that browsers care to save us from intrusive scripts and the like. I am not happy with IE putting something into the browser that makes a simple style-fix look like a hack-attack!
I've used a < span > to represent the file-input so that I could apply appropriate styling to the < div > instead of the < input > (once again, because of IE). Now due to this IE want's to show the User a path with a value that's just guaranteed to put them on guard and in the very least apprehensive (if not totally scare them off?!)... MORE IE-CRAP!

I came accross the same problem. In IE8 it could be worked-around by creating a hidden input after the file input control. The fill this with the value of it's previous sibling. In IE9 this has been fixed aswell.
My reason in wanting to get to know the full path was to create an javascript image preview before uploading. Now I have to upload the file to create a preview of the selected image.
If you really need to send the full path of the uploded file, then you'd probably have to use something like a signed java applet as there isn't any way to get this information if the browser doesn't send it.

seems you can't find the full path in you localhost by js, but you can hide the fakepath to just show the file name. Use jQuery to get the file input's selected filename without the path
The best solution for this, I've found, is to use a middleware like Multer. Here's a quick rundown:
npm i multer
Add enctype="multipart/form-data" to your html form.
In your backend dock where you're making your post request, require multer (const multer = require('multer'))
In the same dock, set your upload destination: const upload = multer({dest:'uploas/'}). This will automatically create a local folder called 'uploads' where your files will be added. The code I've included shows you how to upload to your local disk storage. If you're using cloud storage (e.g. AWS, Azure, Cloudinary etc.) you can check out the Multer docs to see how to manage that. There aren't too many extra steps though.
in your post request, add 'upload.single' (for one file) or 'upload.array' (for multiple files), like this:

What you have to do else is putting in the form an attribute enctype, e.g.:

I am working on an Adobe Illustrator JavaScript and need to load data from a CSV file on my computer as an array into the script so I can work with them later (everything Is happening on my computer, and nothing happens online/web browser.) I need every line of the text in the CSV to be separated in the array, and then I need to separate the words in the line into an array so that I have an array of arrays in the end. Each line has three variables which get fed into a function that has to happen for each line.

Error 25 isn't a standard Javascript error that you'd ever see in a web browser.
Are you using something like Adobe ExtendScript perhaps? If so, perhaps update your question with exactly where this code is being used.
The answer however, is probably that the program that you're using has an old version of Javascript that doesn't support FileReader (which is a fairly new bit of Javascript code).
It's also worth noting that you wouldn't usually be able to access the user's file from Javascript (without the user selecting it manually). However, it's possible that the program you're using to run JS does support this.

You can use localStorage as a temporary storage between reads and writes.
Though, you cannot actually read and write to a user's filesystem at will using client side JavaScript. You can however request the user to select a file to read the same way you can request the user to save the data you push, as a file.
localStorage allow you to store the data as key-value pairs and it's easy to check if an item exists or not. Optionally simply use a literal object which basically can do the same but only exists in memory. localStorage can be saved between sessions and navigation between pages.

localStorage.setItem("key", "value");
// get some data
var data = localStorage.getItem("key");
// check if key exists, set if not (though, you can simply override the key as well)
if (!localStorage.getItem("key")) localStorage.setItem("key", "value");
The method getItem will always return null if the key doesn't exist.
But note that localStorage can only store strings. For binary data and/or large sizes, look into Indexed DB instead.

The reason for using octet-stream is to "force" the browser to show a save as dialog instead of it trying to show the file in the tab, which would happen if we used text/plain as type.
So, how do we get the data between these stages. Assuming you're using key/value approach and text only you can use JSON objects.

To read you will have to either manually parse the file format if the data exists in a particular format, or if the data is the same as you save out you can read in the file as shown above, then convert it from string to an object:

Note that you may have to delete items from the storage first. There is also the chance other data have been stored there so these are cases that needs to be considered, but this is the basis of one approach.

Are you using Nodejs? Or browser javascript?
In either case the structure you should use is js' standard object. Then you can turn it into JSON like this:

I know you want to write to a file, but but consider a database instead so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel. INSERT ... ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE seems like the logical choice for what you're looking to do.
For security reasons it's not possible to use JavaScript to write to a regular text or similar file on a client's system.
However Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) can be used to send an XMLHttpRequest to a file on the server, written in a server-side language like PHP or ASP.
The server-side file can then write to other files, or a database on the server.
Cookies are useful if you just need to save relatively small amounts of data locally on a client's system.

I have a slide interface in jQuery that loads a JSON file on each new slide. The JSON files are named with sequential numeric values (1.json, 2.json..) to determine the order of the slides. I would like this to be a value in the object ("index-position") rather than the name of the file.
My question is how would I load these files sequentially in the same manner - but rather than load the order by file name, load them by index position?
My hunch is that this means creating an array of 'index-position' values of all the files and associating each index to a file name, but perhaps there is a simpler/more efficient method?

You can read the content of the json before (read the "index-position") and set it to your global array.
Something like:

No magic solution. You must get the files connected to an index in some format (for example ["1.json", "2.json"]). You can put this information in another external file and use it, or you can save an network request by making it hard coded in your code, like this:

Although I haven't used this, if you look at the article it seems that there are ways (although not supported yet by most browsers) to store the offline image data to some files so as to restore them afterward when the user is online (and not to use localStorage)

Here is a workaround that I got working with the code below. I'm aware with your edit you talked about localStorage but I wanted to share how I actually implemented that workaround. I like to put the functions on body so that even if the class is added afterwards via AJAX the "change" command will still trigger the event.

This approach uses the HTML5 File System API's to read the image and put it into a new javascript img object. The key here is readAsDataURL. If you use chrome inspector you will notice the images are stored in base64 encoding.
The reader is Asynchronous, this is why it uses the callback function onload. So make sure any important code that requires the image is inside the onLoad or else you may get unexpected results.

I don't think that there is a direct way to Stringify and then deserialize the string object into the object of your interest. But as a work around you can store the image paths in your local storage and load the images by retrieving the URL for the images. Advantages would be, you will never run out of storage space and you can store 1000 times more files there.. Saving an image or any other file as a string in local storage is never a wise decision..
