Javascript single use variable declaration - javascript

This may be a obvious question, but I was wondering if there was an efficiency difference between declaring something in a one time use variable or simply executing the code once (rather then storing it then using it). For example
var rowId = 3,
updateStuff(rowId);
VS
updateStuff(3);

I think that worrying about performance in this instance is largely irrelevant. These sorts of micro-optimizations don't really buy you all that much. In my opinion, the readability of the code here is more important, since it's better to identify the 3 as rowId than leaving it as a magic number.
If you are really concerned about optimization, minimizing your code with something like Google Closure would help; it has many tools that will help you make your code more efficient.

If you were using google closure to compile and if you annotated the var as a constant (as it appears in your example), I suspect the compiler would remove the constant and replace it with the literal.
My advice is to pick the readable option and if you really need the micro-optimizations and reduction in source size, use the google closure compiler or a minifier-- a tool is more likeley to accumulate enough micro-optimizations to make something noticeably faster, although I'd guess most of the saved milliseconds would come from reduced network time from minification.
And var declarations do take time and if you added that var to the global namespace, then there is one more thing that will be searched during resolving names.

With a modern browser that compiles your code, the generated code will be exactly the same unless the variable is referenced somewhere else also.
Even with an old browser if there is a difference it won't be something to worry about.

EDIT:
delete does not apply to non-objects, therefore my initial response was wrong. Furtermore since the variable rowId is declared with the flag var it will be cleaned up by the garbage collection. Was it on the other hand defined without, it would live for the duration of the page / application.

The variable rowId will be kept in memory and will not be released by the garbage collector since it's referenced to. Unless you release it afterwards like below it will be there till the end of the programs life. Also remember it take time to create the variable (minimal, but you asked)
var rowId = 3
updateStuff(rowId);
delete rowId
With efficiency in mind, then yes there is a difference. Your second example is the quickest and doesn't spend any extra resources.
OBS. Some languages do optimize code as such and simply remove the sequence, but I strongly doubt that JavaScript does so.

variable assignment vs passing directly to a function

What are the advantages/disadvantages in terms of memory management of the following?
Assigning to a variable then passing it to a function
const a = {foo: 'bar'}; // won't be reused anywhere else, for readability
myFunc(a);
Passing directly to a function
myFunc({foo: 'bar'});
The first and second code have absolutely no difference between them (unless you also need to use a later in your code) in the way the variable is passed.
The are only 2 cases in which the first might be preferred over the second.
You need to use the variable elsewhere
The variable declaration is too long and you want to split it in two lines or you are using a complex algorithm and want to give a name to each step for readability.
It depends on the implementation of the JavaScript engine. One engine might allocate memory for the variable in the first example and not allocate memory in the directly-passed example, while another implementation might be smart enough to compile the code in such a way that it makes the first example not allocate memory for a variable and thus leaves the first example behaving as the directly-passed example.
I don't know enough about the specific engines to tell you what each one does specifically. You'd have to take a look at each JS engine (or ask authors of each) to get a more conclusive answer.

Is it a bad practice to declare an Array in arguments?

or
var arr = [elem1,elem2];
validationError(arr,type,shiftNo);
What I mean to ask is approach 1 of calling the function considered bad ( also does it have any performance ramifications). and for that matter is it a bad approach to declare strings, object and functions inside arguments.
Performance is not an issue, not in a language like JS, Ruby or whatnot. So all we can do is think about code readability. And this case is not strongly related to JS, so will be my examples.

This clearly states: "if the move (E2 E4) is valid for this chessboard, then...", you don't even need to look at the docs to know that. If we write that without assigning our array a name, the result looks a little cryptic (still easy to guess, but harder for such a tiny example):
if chessboard.valid(["E2", "E4"], player) {
...
}
What is this supposed to mean? What does valid stand for here? Maybe, it's asking whether these cells contain valid player's pieces? This is a sympthom of a design flaw, more precisely bad naming. It makes bold assumptions about how the chessboard code will be used. We can make it obvious that this array represents a move by renaming the chessboard's method:
if chessboard.valid_move(["E2", "E4"], player) {
...
}
This is better, but you may not have an API that allows your code to stay so readable without some additional naming.
So, I suggest a rule of thumb:
If the array will be used more than once, name it.
If the meaning of the array is not obvious from where it goes (function name), name it.
Don't name it, unless points 1 or 2 apply.
It doesn't make any difference really. Either way, you create a Javascript Array, which basically is an Object and get a reference in return (which you pass to your method). If you don't need to access that array (or other data) later in your code, the second approach is completely fine.
Are the contents of arr ever going to get used again? If so, then option 2 is definitely the way to go. If not... something as simple as this is probably just personal opinion.
Personally, I'd have to say that option 2 is better practice, even though sometimes I'm guilty of using option 1. Option 2 is easier to read, it's easier to follow and it's less likely someone will have to re-read it because they became temporarily confused or lost in flow of thought whilst reading through your code (especially newer programmers). For those reasons it's easier to maintain, you, and potentially future developers working with your code, will likely save time working with it.
The only negatives I can see would be generating an absolutely miniscule amount of overhead, and now you have 2 lines of code instead of 1. But I think that's irrelevant, the tiny potential benefits of option 2 outweigh the tiny negatives of option 1.
It is subjective, but in my opinion it is better to use the second approach.
As #jAndy said there is no difference in the code execution neither the performance of your code, but it is easier to debug and easier to read and understand the second approach.

Javascript local variables - is it worth using them?

It gets said a lot that local variables are faster than globals in JavaScript Eg:
function ()
{

For instance, I've been thinking of aliasing the global Math object to a local Mathl variable or alternatively aliasing specific (much used) functions to a local variable/function like Mathround() instead of using Math.round().
Now the things that I'm thinking of doing this with (eg Math.round() ) can be used plenty of times per animation frame (50ish) and there could be 60 frames per second. So quite a few lookups would be avoided if I do this. - and that's just one example of something I could do it with. There'd be lots of similar variables I could alias.
So my question is - is this really worth it? Is the difference tangible when there's so many lookups being avoided?
If you don't know whether it's worth it, then it's probably not. In other words, you should address performance issues when they happen by identifying, measuring, and testing situation-specific alternatives.
It's hard enough to write clear, readable, maintainable code when you set out to write something humans can understand. It's a lot harder if you set out trying to write something that computers can execute faster (before you even know what faster means in terms of your application). Focus on clarity and address performance problems as they arise.
As for your specific example. If you're dying to know the answer, then test it.
Lookups will be faster if you scope parent-scope variables locally. How much faster? Is the difference noticable? Only you can tell by measuring the performance of your code.
It isin't that rare to see the document being aliased to a local variable.

However like already stated, beware blindly aliasing object member functions because you might run into this value issues.
E.g.

Say you have this code:

}
To execute the Math.cos(x) the JS VM must a) compute location of global Math object and b) get cos property of it. Just in case someone inside that someFunc() doesn't do crazy things as this for example:
Math = {};
In general in JS access to local variable is similar (if not exact) to access to array element by known index. Access to global objects is pretty much always look-up by key in maps.

Is writing your own parser worth the extra runtime it causes?

I am doing work involving a lot of DOM manipulation. I wrote a function to more efficiently change common styles on objects using "hotkeys". It simply interprets this:
styles = parseStyles({p:"absolute",l:"100px",t:"20px",bg:"#CC0000"});
as this:
styles = {position:"absolute",left:"100px",top:"20px",background:"#CC0000"};
This came about mainly to save me from having to read so much, and because I wanted to see if I could do it :) (as well as file sizes). I find these hotkeys easier to look at; I am setting and resetting styles dozens of times for different custom DOM objects.
But, is having a bottleneck like this going to be a significant burden on performance and runtime if my page is using it up to 5,000 times in a session, about 10-25 executions at a time?

I find that setting non-computed styles is rarely ever needed any more. If you know the styles ahead of time, define a class for that in your CSS and addClass or removeClass from the necessary objects. Your code is a lot more maintainable and all style-specific info is in your CSS files rather than your Javascript files. Pretty much, the only time I set formatting-style info directly on an object anymore is when I'm using computed positions with absolute positioning and even then, if I rack my brain hard enough, the positioning problem can usually be solved with plain CSS/HTML.
The examples you cite in your question look like static styles which could all be done with a CSS rule and simply doing addClass to an object. Besides being cleaner, it should be a lot faster to execute too.
It looks like what you're doing is using run-time parsing in order to save development-time typing. That's fine if you don't notice the performance difference. Only you can know that for sure because only you can test your app in the environments that you need it to run (old browser, old CPU, stress usage). We can't answer that for you. It would certainly be faster not to be doing run-time conversion for something that is known at development time. Whether that speed difference is relevant depends upon a lot of details and app requirements you haven't disclosed (and may not have even seriously thought about) and could only be figured out with configuration testing.
If it were me and I had any thoughts that maybe I was calling this so much that it might impact performance, I'd find it a lot less work to do a little extra typing (or search and replace) and not have to test the potential performance issues.
Memoize your parsing function.
The simple fact is, that over some finite area of time, the number of actual styles, or full style strings that you will process will likely be quite small, and will also, likely, have a reasonable amount of duplication.
So, when you go to parse a style expression, you can do something simple like store the expression in a map, and check if you've seen it before. If you have, return the result that you got before.
This will save you quite a bit of time when reuse is involved, and likely not cost you much time when it's not.

in JavaScript, when finished with an object created via new ActiveXObject, do I need to set it to null?

In a Javascript program that runs within WSH and creates objects, let's say Scripting.FileSystemObject or any arbitrary COM object, do I need to set the variable to null when I'm finished with it? Eg, am I recommended to do this:

Is the effect different than just letting the vars go out of scope?
Assigning null to an object variable will decrement the reference counter so that the memory management system can discard the resource - as soon as it feels like it. The reference counter will be decremented automagically when the variable goes out of scope. So doing it manually is a waste of time in almost all cases.
In theory a function using a big object A in its first and another big object B in its second part could be more memory efficient if A is set to null in the middle. But as this does not force the mms to destroy A, the statement could still be a waste.
You may get circular references if you do some fancy class design. Then breaking the circle by hand may be necessary - but perhaps avoiding such loops in the first place would be better.
There are rumours about ancient database access objects with bugs that could be avoided by zapping variables. I wouldn't base my programming rules on such voodoo.
(There are tons of VBscript code on the internet that is full of "Set X = Nothing"; when asked, the authors tend to talk about 'habit' and other languages (C, C++))

Scripts like VBScript, JScript, and ASP are executed within an environment that manages memory for you. As such, explicitly setting an object reference to Null or Empty, does not necessarily remove it from memory...at least not right away. (In practice it's often nearly instantaneous, but in actuality the task is added to a queue within the environment that is executed at some later point in time.) In this regard, it's really much less useful than you might think.
In compiled code, it's important to clean up memory before a program (or section of code in some cases) ends so that any allocated memory is returned to the system. This prevents all kinds of problems. Outside of slowly running code, this is most important when a program exits. In scripting environments like ASP or WSH, memory management takes care of this cleanup automatically when a script exits. So all object references are set to null for you even if you don't do it explicitly yourself which makes the whole mess unnecessary in this instance.
As far as memory concerns during script execution, if you are building arrays or dictionary objects large enough to cause problems, you've either gone way beyond the scope of scripting or you've taken the wrong approach in your code. In other words, this should never happen in VBScript. In fact, the environment imposes limits to the sizes of arrays and dictionary objects in order to prevent these problems in the first place.
If you have long running scripts which use objects at the top/start, which are unneeded during the main process, setting these objects to null may free up memory sooner and won't do any harm. As mentioned by other posters, there may be little practical benefit.
