Accessing IFrame elment from external page loaded inside iFrame - javascript

I would like access the IFrame element available in the main page from the IFrame source page using JavaScript
Here is my main Page
<html>
<body>
<IFrame id="page-container" src="http://stackoverflow.com"
width="200px" height="200px">
</IFrame>
</body>
</html>
Child Page
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.8.3.js"/>
<script type="text/javascript" >
$(document).ready(function(){
var containerFrame= $('#page-container');
//var containerFrame=document.frames["page-container"];
//var containerFrame=document.frames["page-container"];
//var containerFrame=document.parent.frames["page-container"];
});
</script>
<body>
<div>some content..</div>
</body>
</html>
I am getting undefined for all my tries.
How it can be done? Is it possible?
Edit: I tried loading a cross domain page.
In IE i am getting error ' for security reason framing is not allowed' and also
domains, protocols and port must match. Can we achieve this any way?

var containerFrame = $('#page-container', window.parent.document)
This should firstly reference the parent of the window and then look for the iframe div

You need to specify the context to search for #page-container in, which in this case will be the parent window.
var containerFrame = $('#page-container', window.parent.document);

How to get all nested iframes on document?

I found many related questions but none of them had a solution that worked for me, so apologies if this is a dupe.
I have the following HTML structure (simplified) :
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body style="">
<div>
<div>
<div>
<iframe>
<html>
<head></head>
<body>
<div></div>
<iframe>
<html>
<head></head>
<body>
<div>
<iframe src="about:blank">
<html>
<head></head>
<body>
<img />
<iframe id="some_random_id">
<html>
<head></head>
<body>
<div>
<!-- main content -->
</div>
</body>
</html>
</iframe>
</body>
</html>
</iframe>
</div>
</body>
</html>
</iframe>
</body>
</html>
</iframe>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</body>
</html>
And I would like to retrieve all the iframes, ideally in an array.
I have tried the following:
document.getElementsByTagName('iframe')
But that returns an array of size 1 : [iframe]
window.frames.length give me 1
I thought about doing something like :
var a = document.getElementsByTagName('iframe')[0]
var b = a.getElementsByTagName('iframe')[0]
// b is undefined
var b = a.contentDocument.getElementsByTagName('iframe')[0]
// b is undefined
Is there any way to retrieve all iframe on the page? Alternatively, just getting the last one (the one with the id some_random_id) would works as fine, but I can't use the id to select it since the html is created by a third party.
Edit: I don't think my question is a duplicate of using document.getElementsByTagName on a page with iFrames - elements inside the iframe are not being picked up
because the accepted answer in this question use:
for( j=0; j<m; j++) {
...
}
Where m is document.getElementsByTagName('iframe').length. But in my case it would have the value 1 and thus I couldn't access the nested iframes.
You are using the <iframe> tag absolutely wrong! You would like to read the documentation from <iframe> tag:
Permitted content: Fallback content, i.e. content that is normally not rendered, but that browsers not supporting the <iframe> element will render.
In other words the content between <iframe> and </iframe> tags will be rendered, if the browser do not support the <iframe> element.
You have two possibilities to use <iframe> tag:
In the src attribute from <iframe> tag you could write a path to HTML file.
In the src attribute from <iframe> tag you could write "about:blank" and then using JS you could add the content to this <iframe>.
If you want find some elements or manipulate the content from this iframes you could use the following code:
var iframe = document.getElementById('iframeId'),
innerDoc = iframe.contentDocument ? iframe.contentDocument
: iframe.contentWindow.document;
You should be sure that you have an access to your <iframe>.
Please read Cross-origin resource sharing (CORS) article about it.
If you want to get the count of all nested iframes on document you have to find it for each <iframe> separatelly and to add this count to your global iframe count variable. And do not forget about the CORS (see above).

Change an iframe's src from another html file?

Well, I have my radio elements that update an iFrame with js code; and that works fine.
Then I have my button below that creates an iFrame in a HTML Division that contains a bunch o' buttons in a list, my aim is to click one of these buttons in the iFrame then have that button to update the above iFrame (the one controlled by the radio's).
How is this possible, can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.
Note: I've tried using <link rel="import" href="parentpage.html"> to import its ID's (if it does that?) then tried using JS to update it that way, to no avail.
What it looks like (layout wise)!
A simple way to do so is to get the button inside the iframe and set the event onclick like this
$(document.getElementById('iFrame2').contentWindow.document.getElementById("iFrame2Button")).click
(function ()
{
$("#iFrame1").attr('src','tests.php');
})
Assuming all the frames are in the same domain, this can be done like this:
<html>
<head>
<title>Main Page</title>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
var change_iframe1_src = function(new_src) {
$("#iframe1").attr('src', new_src);
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
<!-- frame for which we will change src attribute -->
<iframe id="iframe1" src="" width="400" height="200" border="1"></iframe>
<!-- frame which includes your iframe2 with the buttons-->
<iframe src="iframe.html" width="200" height="200" border="1"></iframe>
</body>
</html>
Now in the iframe2 file attach a click handler for your buttons that should change the src attribute of the iframe1 by calling a function defined in the main page.
Example:
<html>
<head>
<title>iFrame 2</title>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(function() {
$("button").click(function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
// call function in a parent frame - IMPORTANT LINE BELOW :)
parent.window.change_iframe1_src(this.rel);
})
})
</script>
</head>
<body>
<button rel="iframe3.html">Change iframe src to iframe3.html</button>
<button rel="iframe4.html">Change iframe src to iframe4.html</button>
</body>
The links in the iframe 2 page call the function which is defined in the parent window (the main page / the window which embeded the iframe2 page itself). That function (change_iframe1_src in this example) takes one argument which is a new url.
The src attribute of the frame #iframe1 (your first frame) will be changed to this url.
Again, this works as long as all the frames are in the same domain.
Hope it helped :) Source

javascript: is it possible to target div of another file?

Let me explain the purpose of this. I'm using some CMS and I'm trying to customize it with php scripts of my own that I embedded to the home page with IFRAME. My php script gives back some links which I would like to open outside that IFRAME - as a part of some other CMS block on the homepage. The idea is to target (from my php script) the div of that CMS block which is already showing some data. Is that possible?
If you need to access <div> or any other element of parent window from its child iframe
USE:
var elem=window.parent.document.getElementById('target');
inside <script> tag of iframe's document.
ex.
file: index.html (Give any name).
<html>
<body>
<div id="div_to_use_from_parent">Blah!</div>
<iframe src="xyz.php" width="xx" height="xx"></iframe>
</body>
</html>
file: xyz.php (same as src of iframe)
<?php
echo<<<html
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function do_blah(){
var elem=window.parent.document.getElementById('div_to_use_from_parent');
elem.innerHTML="iframe changed My Content!";
}
</script>
</head>
<body onLoad="do_blah();">
This is iframe
</body>
</html>
html;
?>
OR
if you need to access element in iframe from parent window
USE:
var iframe = document.getElementById('idOfIframe');
var frame = iframe.contentDocument || iframe.contentWindow.document;
var yourDiv= frame.getElementById('div_you_want');
inside <script> tag of parent window's document.
ex.
file: index.html (Give any name).
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
window.onload=function(){
var iframe = document.getElementById('idOfIframe');
var frame = iframe.contentDocument || iframe.contentWindow.document;
var elem= frame.getElementById('div_from_iframe');
elem.innerHTML+="<br /> And Parent window added this!";
};
</script>
</head>
<body>
<div id="div_to_use_from_parent">Blah!</div>
<iframe src="xyz.php" width="xx" height="xx"></iframe>
</body>
</html>
file: xyz.php (same as src of iframe)
<?php
echo<<<html
<html>
<body>
<div id="div_from_iframe"> This div from iframe</div>
</body>
</html>
html;
?>
parent window is the one in which original html(index.html) document along with your iframe(xyz.php) resides.
Hope it helps :-)!
var iframe = document.getElementById('idOfIframe');
var frame = iframe.contentDocument || iframe.contentWindow.document;
var yourDiv= frame.getElementById('div_you_want');
From the page running inside the <iframe> you can refer to the parent page as window.parent, and perform actions as you normally would.
parent.document.getElementById('target_div').innerHTML = 'New content.';
Note JavaScript's cross-domain restrictions apply. You can only do that if both pages belong to the same domain.
In case of links, you can include to your <a> tags the attribute target="_parent", or set it as base target to apply to all links.
<head>
...
<base target="_parent">
</head>
You can also target a link to another iframe, all you have to do is set a name="iframe_name" to it and set target="iframe_name" to all links that should open in that area.

How do I get a paragraph from a website and display it in an iframe?

I am trying to get the first paragraph from the website below and display it in an iframe.
Can you correct my code?
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
var iframe = document.getElementById('iframe');
$(iframe).contents().find("<p>").html();
</script>
</head>
<body>
<iframe name="iframe" id="iframe" src="https://www.baronaonlinepoker.com/blog" scrolling="yes" width="180" height="135">
</iframe>
</body>
</html>
You'd be better to use a DIV and use XMLHTTPRequest to set the innerHTML
If the browser loads a page from x.com, that page can have a frame whose source is y.com, but the x.com code will not have access to the y.com DOM. This is a cross-domain issue. You can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-origin_policy
Please see my answer here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/19100553/98706
because I think your going about achieving something the wrong way.

Replace the content of _top window with content of iframe without reload page

Is it possible to replace the content of the browser window (_top frame) with the document loaded in an iframe, without issuing a new GET to load that document?
Something like this:
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#link").click(function() {
// should present in the browser window the content of the iframe WITHOUT reload
// even preserve javascript/head code
$(document).html($("#frameDestination").html());
});
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
<a id="link" href="#">full window</a>
<iframe id="frameDestination" src="http://www.some-random-site.com" width="900px" height="500px"></iframe>
</body>
</html>
Use contents() when working with an iframe in jQuery.
$("#YourIframe").contents().find("html").html();
This is only going to work if the iframe is in the same domain as the parent.
I haven't tested cross domain, but on the same domain I have this script working:
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#link").click(function() {
var iframeBody = document.getElementById("frameDestination").contentDocument,
head = iframeBody['head'].innerHTML,
body = iframeBody['body'].innerHTML;
$('body').html( body );
$('head').html( head );
});
});
In the latest Firefox, I'm even able to set a variable in a script tag in the frame, and see that value in _top after clicking the link.
