Highcharts bar chart breaks when in external js - javascript

I'm having a little trouble with Highcharts. I have a graph set up with a default stacked bar layout. It looks fine. The code is in an html file.
I then put the same code, no modifications, into an external .js file, and the second result is what I get. I'm totally stumped, I have no idea why this is happening. Any ideas?
The js file has a bunch of other code, but I don't think it should conflict with the graph generation...
Thanks.

Since you didn't provide any sample code, I'm going to wildly guess at causes:
The code in the external JS file /is indeed/ interfering with the graph generation. This may happen if it isn't being loaded properly with the onload event. Most Javascript should only be executed after the document has completely loaded (jQuery is good for this).
By putting the Highcharts code in an external file, you're breaking the order of loading. Perhaps, some of the code depends on other code that you're now loading later. Maybe it's trying to use a stylesheet that doesn't exist yet. Maybe some code before it is overwriting a global object, and some properties and methods are disappearing.
As a general rule, Javascript files should be loaded AFTER stylesheets, and most Javascript logic should execute after the document loads. This can either be done by attaching an onload="javascript:foo()" attribute to the body, or using $(foo); (where foo is a function) if you're using jQuery.

How to set up basic Chartist.js chart

I feel lost, I read the getting started for Chartist.js and it seems very straight forward but I can't get any charts to show up.
I made a rails app and got the welcome page displaying text, I linked the css and javascript files, but Im not exactly sure how to get it to display. I made a new js file, added the data they have in the documentation and linked it to the main HTML page but nothing shows up?
It looks like in https://github.com/zachsergeant/Analytics/blob/master/app/views/layouts/application.html.erb you're loading chartist right before your body closes. Probably your code that generates charts is loaded somewhere within the yield of the layout template. I guess Chartist is not defined at that point. You should follow a better asynchronous script loading mechanism or simply defer the execution of your scripts using the DOMContentLoaded event.
<script>
document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', function() {
// Draw charts here
});
</script>

Load external html file to div and use its js functions

I have some div:
<div id='dialog'></div>
Now I want to load into this div an external html file and use its js functions.
I know I can load it using jQuery.Load() and it works fine, the problem is that I want to use the html js functions.
The main problem is that I have several divs which I load this html file into them and I want that when I'm activating js function it will only work on the specific div.
Pass parameter to view that you are loading that will indicate container of the loaded view:
jQuery.Load(url, { containerId: 'dialog' })
I remember I had the problem back when jQuery1.4 was issued. In that version, .load() suddendly began stripping out the js when a target container was specified.
What I did at that time :
separate html and js in different files (let's say myhtml.html and myjs.js ), or views
have my js file act as a js module, with a public entry point function (say initContent) taking a jQuery element as a parameter
have an invisible link in myhtml.html, namely
after loading myhtml.html into my target div, search for $('a.dynamicJs') in my target div to extract js url, and entry point function from the href
if the js had not previously been loaded, dynamically load the js into the page trhough an ajax call
dynamically call the entry point function with the target div as parameter
This also worked with css.
It required some time to tweak it on all navigators (limited number of css sections on IE, different way to dynamically call a function), and I ended with much more code I expected in the first place. It also required a lot of refactoring of my html/js modules (but I must confess I ended having a code that was really cleaner)
I'm sure there are frameworks that handle this kind of situation way better by now. But this is what I came up with at that time.
Hope this will help

How to know which JS script manipulated certain elements of the DOM using Firebug

I am inspecting a website, which has tons of JS files loaded from several servers along with jQuery. Number of js files is really big. Some are within the regular scripts tags. Others are loaded dynamically via ajax.
I am interested in certain elements of the DOM which are manipulated because of some js file. I see the dynamic loaded elements in firebug. I needed to know exactly which JS script creates/updates them.
I searched the js files for the classes and the IDs of the elements,so I can have some clue about which js file affects them, but I found nothing.
Is there any direct way using Firebug to know exactly which JS file manipulates certain DOM elements?
Thanks in advance.
Not in a direct way.
Use EventBug addon
Then search by the function signature in your script panel to drill down to the js file
Hope this helps!
You should be able to go to Script tab in firebug, then look at the toolbar right below the script tab you can select all the javascript files included on the page.
If you have an idea which file it is coming from then select that file and then look through the code and set break points on functions you think the event is coming from by clicking on the respective line number, then refresh the page and perform the event that calls the javascript.
You might have to put in a few before you narrow it down, but the break points will make it alot easier to tell which functions are being called for which events.

JS is not loading correctly, where is the fault?

I have a website where I want to use MagicZoom.
Everything would be fine since it is easy to implement, but there seems to be an error when loading the js file.
I will send you the website which is currently under construction.
MagicZoom should be implemented there, where you chose your fabric, for a close-up.
I think, but of course this is only my opinion and I'm not an expert, that the problem occurs because the div container with the picture is created dynamically from another PHP file and not present onload. Therefore the JavaScript does not work properly.
You will see that in the second step the zoom does not load although the class is set correctly.
Your error says "prettyPhoto is not a function". This tells me that some script is trying to use the "prettyPhoto" object before that script has been included on the page.
Looking at your HTML header, I see that is among the last of the <script> tags. Try moving the <script> tag where you include that library in your HTML header up a couple of lines, above some of the other includes. Be aware - you can't move it above the includes for jQuery!
Try that out, let us know.

ASP.net: ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock fires before jQuery is loaded

Interesting problem here from some inherited code I recently looked at. I'm trying to add a compression module to a project. It is loading all the JS and CSS files, combining them, minifying them, and compressing them. I've tried a number of solutions, but all of them have one fatal problem.
I have some javascript that is being loaded via Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock in the PreRender of the MasterPage. The compression module is loading as a Script Tag link in the MasterPage, but when I run the page... the code from the PreRender is lopped on top and is giving me a '$ is undefined' error, telling me jQuery isn't loaded yet.
Furthermore, I can't seem to get past the same problem when it comes to inline javascript on content pages.
Any ideas as to what is causing this? Enlighten me as I have no clue.
If have done this before with RegisterStartupScript (instead of RegisterClientScriptBlock) and called the $(document).ready(function() from WITHIN that script.
If the script tag link that eventually expands out to jquery is not in the head, but in the body of the page, then $ will be undefined when the script block executes, unless it is included in the html before the opening <form /> tag in the rendered html, which I understand is where RegisterClientScriptBlock spits out its script (just after that opening tag).
If this is not the case, and the joined/minified script is in the head, then I'd use a browser debugger such as Firebug or IE Dev Tools to verify that the jquery script is being correctly included in your combined script.
I know this answer is late to the party, but try calling ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock in your OnPreRenderComplete (rather than OnPreRender) handler. This inserts the code later in the page rendering process.
All your jQuery code should be written inside the DOM-ready function:
$(function() {
// your code here
});
indipendently from where you place it in the page, 'cause the jQuery() function isn't avalaible before.
